In a hurry? Pick one of these first

Those three picks are where I'd start, and each one is there for a different reason. SpicyChat is my all-round pick: its free plan lists unlimited text on the Default model, with ads and possible queues, but no images or voice. Nomi AI allows adult content and has the steadiest memory of the three, plus a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day.

Candy AI is the pick for images and voice, but a free-tier check on 2026-09-22 found only 3-5 free messages, so the free account is a preview, not a place to live. If you only read one thing on this page, make it the free allowance.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Every card above leads to a full review, and I'd open the one for the app you are already curious about before anything else. Each review answers the same questions in the same order: what the free start really gives, which plan I think is the smart buy, what shows up on your bank statement, and how the refund rule reads. My honest opinion: the refund line matters more than the feature list.

Candy AI gives non-EU/UK users 24 hours to ask for a refund, while Nomi AI says all payments are nonrefundable. That difference is worth knowing before day one.

That ranking is my short list, not the whole story. Already sure you want adult chat? Then the NSFW AI chat rankings sort the apps by what each one allows. If you are still unsure, the quiz below is the quickest way to narrow it down.

I like it because it asks what you care about first, free chat, privacy or images, instead of pushing one app on everyone. Answer honestly about your budget. The cheapest good fit beats the fanciest app you will cancel in a week, and I would rather you keep your money.

If the quiz handed you two or three names, the table below puts them in neighbouring columns. My way of reading it: Look at the free column first, because "free" means very different things across these apps: Character AI says messaging is free and unlimited for all users, while GirlfriendGPT hands you 20 bonus messages at the start and Daily Login adds another 10 each day. Then look at the cheapest paid plan, not the headline one.

SpicyChat's Get a Taste plan is $5.95 a month and CrushOn AI's Standard plan is $5.99. Either one is a low-cost test of whether an app suits you.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

One thing the table cannot show: which apps sell coins or tokens on top of the plan. It's my least favourite habit in this category, because it turns a clear monthly price into a guess. Secrets AI is a good example: its $19.99 monthly Premium comes with 8,000 Moments, and all Moments purchases are final.

The figures below put the whole market in context, from how many apps let you start free to how much paying yearly usually saves. Read them as a baseline. If a single app looks far off the median, that is your cue to read its review.

The market at a glance

  1. 8.4/10

is the best overall score reached by any app in our reviews. A typical (median) app gets 6.2.

Data from: our own app data
  2. 100%

of tracked apps let you begin for free.

Data from: our own app data
  3. $7.99/mo

is the typical (median) cost of the lowest paid plan, with annual billing shown per month.

Data from: our own app data
  4. 48%

is the median you save by paying annually rather than monthly, over 43 apps offering both.

Data from: our own app data
  5. 32

apps also charge for messages or pictures with coins or tokens, beyond the plan.

Data from: our own app data

Worked out from our 78-app database at build time; each figure moves whenever a price changes.

Those numbers are why I lean so hard on yearly plans, with one warning. Paying for a year only saves money when you know you'll stick around. Nomi AI charges $15.99 monthly for Standard, or $99.99 yearly (about $8.33 per month), yet its terms call every payment nonrefundable.

Hence my rule: try the free tier or a single month before you switch. And if an app you rely on suddenly stops answering, the app status page is the first place I'd look before blaming your account.

Prices on these apps move, and so do deals. If you want to hear when a plan price changes or a new app is worth a look, the signup above is the easy way, and you can leave whenever you like. Below it, the box holds the longer guidance I think every reader should skim once: where the facts on My Virtual Girlfriend come from, how to read a review card, which plan I'd point you to first, and what to ask before you pay.

It is organised as short sections, so open the one that matches your question and skip the rest.

How to use these guides and reviews

Why my stories and the checked facts stay apart

Let me be upfront about how My Virtual Girlfriend works, because I think you deserve to know. Every reviewed app has been on my own phone, some on a paid plan and more on the free one, at different times between 2023 and 2026, and each review says when. The facts that can be pinned down are kept separate: the price of each plan, what the free tier allows, the billing name your bank prints, the cancel path and the refund rule, taken from each app's own pages as checked in September 2026.

Where a free tier was checked on a specific date, the page says so, like the Candy AI check on 2026-09-22.

On top of that sits my opinion. I say which plan I think is fair, which refund rule I find mean, and who should walk away. What you will not find is a made-up story about a late-night chat. Any moment you read in a review happened to me, and none of it replaces a true number.

Why does that matter to you? Because the things that hurt in this category are rarely the chat itself. They are the free tier that ends after five messages, the token pack you did not expect, the refund window you missed. Those are facts, and facts can be compared across apps in a way feelings cannot.

What a review on My Virtual Girlfriend covers

Every review on My Virtual Girlfriend follows the same shape, so you can jump between apps and compare like with like. I like this a lot as a reader, because it means you never have to hunt for the price or the refund rule. They always sit in the same place.

Each review answers these questions:

  • What the free tier gives, in numbers, and whether adult content is free or paid.
  • What the plans cost, and which one I think is the smart buy.
  • The name your bank statement shows, such as EverAI for Candy AI or NOMI.AI for Nomi AI.
  • How to cancel and what the refund rule says, in the app's own words where possible.
  • The catch, stated calmly, with who it affects.

The catch is the part I care about most. Every app has one. For Nomi AI, it is that free messages are capped at 400 characters each and payments are nonrefundable. For OurDream AI, it is that chat runs on Dreamcoins, and past the starting balance, people without a subscription get none free by default. Learning that before you sign up beats reading any list of features.

Then comes my verdict, and it always gives you a way in. Usually that is the free start, because I think you should try an app before you pay for it. When an app has no useful free start, I say which plan to begin with instead.

You will find every app's page in the full list of app reviews, sorted so the strongest picks come first.

Reading the facts on each card

The cards on this page are short on purpose. Each one carries a handful of facts that answer the first questions most people have, and I think those facts do more work than a long description would. Here is how I'd read them.

Start with the free start. It shows whether starting costs you anything, but the real detail is in the review. Character AI lets free users message without a cap, paying with ads and a slow mode, which is generous. Candy AI's free account, as checked on 2026-09-22, allowed just 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images. Both count as a free start, yet they are not the same thing at all.

Next, the price. A card lists the lowest entry price, often the monthly rate of an annual plan. Fair enough, but remember the upfront bill. Candy AI's 12-Month Plan is €3.99 a month, billed €47.88 at once. Secrets AI's annual Premium comes to $9.17 per month, billed $109.99.

Then the content level. Some apps keep everything SFW, like Character AI. Others allow adult content only on paid plans, like Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT. If that matters to you, it should be your first filter, not your last.

Finally, the score. Every card shows my score out of 10, weighted across seven criteria and based on my own use plus the official pages. The recipe behind it sits on my page about how I check the apps on this site. I'd read it once, then trust the cards.

What the cards leave out

A card cannot hold everything, and I would rather tell you what is missing than let you assume it is not there. The biggest gap is the fine print on tokens and coins. A card can say "images: paid", but only the review spells out the 100 monthly tokens in Candy AI's 1-Month Plan, or that Joi AI's free account gives 6 lifetime image generations, not monthly ones.

The second gap is the refund rule. It is too long for a card and too important to shorten. GirlfriendGPT refuses refunds on subscriptions already paid, apart from a few limited cases. OurDream AI offers a 14-day "Quality Guarantee" that it judges one request at a time.

The third gap is quality: how the chat, images and replies actually felt. That lives in the review, where my own notes carry their dates and outside findings are labelled as someone else's. My advice: use the cards to shortlist, then read two reviews before you pay anything.

The catch every app has, and how bad it really is

There is no perfect app in this category, and I do not think you should expect one. What matters is whether the catch is one you can live with. Here are a few I think are worth knowing, all from the records behind the reviews.

Candy AI: the free account is tiny, and the refund window for non-EU/UK users is 24 hours after payment. That is short. If you pay, decide within the first day whether it is for you.

SpicyChat: free users can text without limits on the Default model, which I like, but it comes with ads and possible waiting lines, and fees can't be refunded after the account has seen any use.

CrushOn AI: the Standard plan is cheap at $5.99 a month, but its terms rule out refunding usage fees, with nothing back for unused time either. Other reviewers report people complaining of being charged twice and of support that never replies. If that is right, I'd pay monthly and watch your statement for CRUSHON SUB.

None of these is a reason to panic. Each is a reason to start small. And if you want to lower the cost of the plan you pick, the current deals and coupon codes page lists the discounts that are live right now, so you don't pay full price when you don't have to.

Which plan I'd point you to first

My rule is simple: free first, then one month, then yearly only if you are sure. I know yearly plans look tempting, and the savings can be real. Nomi AI's Standard plan falls from $15.99 to $8.33 per month when billed annually.

But yearly is the plan you regret most if the app turns out not to be your thing, especially when the terms say you get nothing back for not using the app or not liking it.

Where there is a cheap entry plan, I like it as a middle step. Character AI's (c.ai) lite begins at $4.99 monthly, and SpicyChat's Get a Taste costs $5.95. Either one shows you whether paying feels worth it.

Where there is no cheap entry plan, look at what the free tier gives first. Secrets AI offers 20 messages a day for free, enough to size up the chat before Premium ($19.99 monthly) is even on the table.

And one plan I'd usually skip at the start: the top tier. GirlfriendGPT's Elite plan is $50 a month, and I cannot see why anyone would begin there.

The questions worth asking before you pay

Before you pay for any AI companion app, I think five questions deserve an answer. None of them is exciting, but they are the ones that decide whether you still feel good after the first charge.

First, what does the free tier really give? Not "free to join", but the number of messages and images, and whether adult content is part of it. Second, what is the real monthly cost if you use it a lot, including coins or tokens? Third, what name shows up on your bank statement?

Some are plain, like S LABS INC. for Secrets AI or DREAM STUDIO LLC AL for OurDream AI. For privacy, that one line can outweigh every feature.

Fourth, how do you cancel? The best cancel paths are one screen away. Candy AI's terms say you cancel under Settings / Unsubscribe in your account, and OurDream AI's help page points to a "Cancel subscription" button on your profile. Fifth, what does the refund rule say, word for word?

If two apps both pass those questions, the choice gets easier, and that is when a head-to-head helps. The app comparisons put two apps side by side on exactly these points, so you can see which catch you would rather live with. My tip: compare the two you like most, not the two with the best marketing.

When a page changes, and why the date matters

Prices in this category move around a lot, and I would rather a page admit it than pretend a price is forever. Every page on My Virtual Girlfriend carries the date its facts were last checked, and I think you should look at that date before you rely on a number. If it is recent, the price is likely still right. If it is old, open the app's own pricing page before you pay.

A review changes when a fact changes: a new plan, a new price, a new refund rule, a free tier that shrinks. That last one matters most to me. Other reviewers report that OurDream AI's free tier has become much thinner than it was in an earlier test.

When something like that happens, the review and the rankings move with it, even if the app used to sit higher.

Rankings change for the same reason. An app does not keep its place because it was once good. It keeps it because the facts still hold. A list stays useful to you only that way.

If you want the current order across every category, the rankings of the best AI companion apps are the place to start. They reflect the latest facts, and each list says what it ranks on. My advice: if a list and a review ever seem to disagree, trust the review, because it is the one with the full fine print.

How to use a review before you pay

Here is the order I'd read a review in, if you only have five minutes. Start with the free-tier section and ask one question: can you judge the app with what it gives you? For Nomi AI, a daily 50 messages is plenty. For Candy AI, 3-5 messages is a short preview.

Next, jump to the billing note. Read the statement name, the cancel path and the refund rule. If any of them bothers you, stop there. That is a perfectly good reason to pick another app.

Only then read the verdict and the catch. If the catch does not touch what you care about, start free and give the app a fair go. If it does, look at the alternatives at the bottom of the review. There is always another way in.

That is the long version. If you only take one habit from it, make it this: read the free allowance and the refund rule before you read anything else. Everything else on an app page is easier to judge once you know those two lines.

The questions below cover the ones I think come up most often, from which app is free to what shows on your statement. If yours is not there, the review of the app you are considering is the best next stop, and it will usually answer it in the billing note.

Common questions

Which AI companion app is the best to start with for free?

For a steady free start, I like Nomi AI: its permanent free plan allows 50 daily messages of up to 400 characters each, ad-free. Character AI says messaging is free and unlimited for all users, with ads and a slow mode, but it keeps content SFW. SpicyChat lets you text endlessly for free on its Default model, with ads and possible waiting lines.

Which is best depends on whether you want adult content, and that is the first thing I'd decide.

Is Candy AI free?

Only as a short preview. When the free tier was checked on 2026-09-22, a free account had 3-5 messages, 3-5 images and no video. Paying starts at €13.99 for the 1-Month Plan, while the 12-Month Plan comes to €3.99 per month, billed €47.88 upfront.

My view: use the free messages to judge the style, then decide on one month rather than jumping straight to a year.

What will an AI companion app show on my bank statement?

Every app differs, so check before paying. Candy AI shows EverAI, Nomi AI shows NOMI.AI, Secrets AI shows S LABS INC., SpicyChat shows NDAI.CHAT, GirlfriendGPT shows NDAI.CC and CrushOn AI shows CRUSHON SUB. If discretion matters to you, I prefer a neutral company name, EverAI or S LABS INC. being good examples.

Can I get a refund from an AI companion app?

Usually only in narrow cases, so read the rule first. Outside the EU/UK, Candy AI allows a refund request within 24 hours of paying. OurDream AI's 14-day "Quality Guarantee" is decided per request. Nomi AI treats every payment as nonrefundable, and Character AI refunds only when the law forces it. My advice: start free or with one month, never with a yearly plan you have not tried.

How do I cancel an AI companion subscription?

Each app has its own path. Candy AI's terms say to go to Settings / Unsubscribe in your account. OurDream AI's help page has you open your profile, pick "Cancel subscription", then confirm; you keep access until the paid period is over. SpicyChat cancels under Profile > Manage Subscription, which redirects to the payment platform. I'd cancel with a day or two to spare, never on renewal day itself.

Are yearly plans worth it?

They can be, once you know you're staying. Nomi AI's Standard runs $15.99 monthly or $99.99 annually, about $8.33 per month. Secrets AI's Premium runs $19.99 monthly or $109.99 annually, about $9.17 per month.

The saving is real, but most of these apps do not refund unused time, so I'd only switch to yearly after at least one paid month you enjoyed.
