How to make rooms in Character AI: what's on file

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

What is a room in Character AI, exactly?

When people talk about rooms in Character AI, they mean group chat: one conversation with more than one character in it. That's the whole idea in a sentence. The good news first: Character AI lists group chat as a feature, and it runs on web, iOS and Android.

The less good news: the exact taps and menu names for starting a room are not in the facts on file, and I'm not going to invent a button for you.

So this page does the next best thing. It tells you what is on file about Character AI, and it helps you plan a room that's worth opening, which is honestly where most group chats succeed or flop.

Here's what the records confirm that matters for rooms:

  • Group chat is listed as a yes
  • You can build custom characters, so a room can hold ones you wrote
  • Free users can send as many messages as they like, though ads show and slow mode kicks in at busy times
  • Voice calls and images are listed as features too, though not tied to rooms on file

I love this feature on principle. A room is where a cosy one-on-one turns into a found family, a tavern full of misfits or a book club with opinions. As someone who spends her days shelving stories, I can't think of a better toy.

One practical note before you build anything big. Rooms can collect a lot of writing fast, and some of it you may not want to keep. If you ever need to clear things out, bookmark my steps for wiping Character AI chats now, while you're calm.

The table right after this, The apps side by side, shows Character AI next to Candy AI and OurDream AI, including the group chat column. It's a quick way to see which apps even offer rooms before you plan one.

How to make a chat room in Character AI, step by step?

I'd love to hand you a neat numbered list of taps here. The trouble is that the steps aren't in the facts on file, and menus change often enough that a guessed path would send you in circles. What I can give you is the part no menu does for you: the plan.

Before you open a room, settle these four things:

  • Who is in it, and why they'd talk to each other at all
  • Where the scene starts, in one line you can paste as the opener
  • Your own role, so the characters know who they're answering
  • One thing the group is trying to do, even something small

That last one is the secret. Rooms without a goal drift into everyone greeting everyone. A room with a missing cat to find, a wedding to plan or a storm to wait out has a story from the first message.

Keep it small to start. Other reviewers found that long Character AI chats turned chaotic, with a promise from just ten messages back sometimes slipping the AI's mind. More characters means more to keep track of, so I'd begin with two or three and add more once the scene holds together.

If you want the bigger picture of the app before you commit time to rooms, my Character AI review covers the free plan, memory and the paid tiers.

Which characters work well together in a room?

Contrast is your friend. Two characters who agree on everything make a polite, sleepy room. Give them different goals, different moods or different ways of talking, and they start to bounce off each other. A cautious one and a reckless one. A grumpy one and a sunny one. You get the idea.

Custom characters help a lot here. Since Character AI lets you create your own, you can write a pair that were made for each other, or for a good argument. I especially like building characters that don't assume one kind of person on the other side: give them room to flirt with anyone, or with no one, and let the story decide.

Which apps have group chat besides Character AI?

The matrix above answers this at a glance, but a few details sit behind the marks. If rooms are the feature you care about most, here's how the apps on file line up:

  • Character AI lists group chat as a yes
  • OurDream AI lists group chat as a yes as well
  • SpicyChat also marks group chat as a yes
  • Nomi AI has group chat on paid plans, and Standard allows as many as 10 active group chats
  • Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT have no group chat value in the records

That last line doesn't mean those two apps can't do it. It means the facts on file don't say either way, and I won't fill the gap. If rooms are a must for you, stick with the apps that list them clearly.

It's the same advice I'd give about any feature: buy what's written down, not what you hope is there.

My take on the shortlist: Character AI is the natural home for rooms because its free plan offers unlimited messaging, so a busy group scene won't eat a small daily allowance. That's a big deal for group chat, where every character's reply adds to the count. Nomi AI's free plan, for comparison, gives 50 messages a day, and its group chats are listed as a paid feature.

SpicyChat is the one I'd look at if you want rooms with fewer content limits. Its policy allows adult content, and the free plan lists unlimited text chat on the Default model. OurDream AI also allows it, but without a subscription each message takes 1 Dreamcoin, which adds up quickly when several characters are talking.

Whatever you pick, check that you can write your own characters in it, because rooms get much better when the cast is yours. Character AI, OurDream AI, SpicyChat and Nomi AI all list custom characters as a yes. GirlfriendGPT lists it as limited.

For a wider set of options with the same kind of character focus, my list of Character AI alternatives is the next place I'd send you. It's especially handy if Character AI's rules are the reason you're looking elsewhere for your group scenes.

Is OurDream AI worth it for group scenes?

The summary box just above covers OurDream AI's basics, so let me focus on what it means for rooms. OurDream AI lists group chat as a yes, along with custom characters, memory, voice calls, images and video. On paper that's a very complete kit for a cast of characters who talk, remember and show up in pictures.

The catch is the meter. Every message costs 1 Dreamcoin unless you subscribe, and the free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start. The help centre also says "Unfortunately we don't currently offer free dreamcoins", so that starting number may change. In a one-on-one chat that's a short taster.

In a busy room it could run out fast, and I'd hate for anyone to discover that mid-scene.

Subscribing changes the picture. The Standard Monthly plan at $19.99 lets you message any AI character without a cap, opens up picture and video generation, and adds 1,000 dreamcoins every month. Standard Annual is billed once a year at $119.88, so about $9.99 per month.

Unlimited messages is the line that matters for rooms, because it takes the per-message counting off the table. With several characters replying to every line you write, that counting is what would otherwise shape how long your scenes can run, and I'd rather a story end when it's finished than when the coins do.

Other reviewers report that voice calls drained coins fast, including images generated during a call that nobody asked for. If you like voice as part of a group scene, keep an eye on the coin balance.

So who is it for? If you want a group chat with images and video in the same place, and you're happy to pay, OurDream AI is a strong pick. If you want free rooms with lots of text, Character AI makes far more sense, and I'd start there.

The one thing I'd skip is jumping straight to Deluxe Annual at $359.88 a year. Its 3x chat memory sounds great for long group stories, but try the room idea on a cheaper plan first and see whether you actually use it.

Do rooms cost more on Character AI?

Short answer: not on the facts on file. On Character AI's free plan, the PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models take as many messages as you send, with ads, slow mode and limited daily features. Nothing on file puts group chat behind a paywall or counts room messages differently. For rooms, that's the best deal among the apps here.

Where money might come in is comfort. Slow mode kicks in at high load on the free plan, and a room with several characters answering in turn is exactly where a slower pace would feel longest. For $9.99 monthly, c.ai+ gets rid of ads and slow mode and gives the best memory, with 30 pins. The yearly plan is $94.99.

Would I pay for rooms alone? Probably not at first. I'd run a few group scenes on the free plan, see how often slow mode actually gets in the way for you, and upgrade only if it keeps breaking the mood.

The memory pins are the other honest reason to pay, since a busy room is exactly where a character might lose the thread.

If you do upgrade and later change your mind, the cancel route on the web goes through Settings > Account > Manage to a Customer Portal, where you enter your account email. Character AI doesn't refund payments unless the law requires it, so stop the plan while there's still time before it renews. Putting a note in your calendar a few days early is a small habit that saves real money.

How sure are these facts about rooms?

I want to be clear about how much this page can promise. The facts here come from Character AI's own pages, such as the c.ai+ FAQ and its pricing and help-centre pages, plus published reviews for the other apps. They confirm that group chat exists and what each plan costs.

They don't include the step-by-step menu for making a room, which is why you won't find one here.

If you'd like to know how My Virtual Girlfriend dates facts and decides what counts as confirmed, the page on how I check the apps walks through it. I'd rather you open the app knowing the plan than follow a path that doesn't match your screen.

Can you run spicy scenes in a Character AI room?

A room is still Character AI, so the same content policy applies. The policy on file allows no adult content, and nothing on file suggests group chat works differently. Adding more characters doesn't loosen the rules, and I wouldn't build a room hoping it does.

That doesn't mean rooms have to be tame. Romance, drama, rivalries, flirting that never quite resolves: plenty of great group stories live happily inside those limits. If your group scene needs to go further, though, move it to an app whose policy allows it. On file, SpicyChat and OurDream AI both list group chat and allow adult content.

For the full policy picture, including what Character AI's rules cover, the page on whether Character AI will allow NSFW goes into detail.

Trying to steer a room past the rules isn't worth it. It breaks the terms and can get an account banned, and you'd lose every character in the room along with it. For a feature built on characters you've written and grown fond of, that's a painful trade. I'd much rather see you keep two apps with clear rules than one account on thin ice.

My verdict on making rooms in Character AI

If a friend asked me how to make rooms in Character AI, this is what I'd say. Yes, the app lists group chat, and it's one of the best reasons to be there, because the free plan offers unlimited messaging and busy rooms need a lot of messages. The exact steps aren't on file, so open the app with a plan instead of a map: a small cast, a clear opening line, your own role and one goal.

Start with two or three characters you wrote yourself. Give them different moods and let them disagree. Add more once the scene holds together. If slow mode or memory keeps getting in the way, c.ai+ is the fix I'd consider, not before.

And if rooms turn out to be your thing but the rules don't fit, SpicyChat and OurDream AI both list group chat. That's a comfortable place to take the party next, and your Character AI rooms can stay exactly as they are.

Common questions

Does Character AI have group chat rooms?

Yes. Character AI lists group chat as a feature, and the app runs on web, iOS and Android. A room is simply a group chat with more than one character in it. The exact menu steps for starting one are not in the facts on file, so look for the group chat option in the app itself.

Can I make a Character AI room without paying?

Nothing on file puts group chat behind a paid plan, and free messaging has no cap, just ads and a slower pace when the service is busy. Plan your room before you open it: pick two or three characters, write a one-line opener, decide your own role and give the group something to do.

How many characters should I put in a room?

No official limit for Character AI is on file. I would start with two or three. Other reviewers report that long chats can get messy and that the AI sometimes forgets earlier details, and a bigger cast gives it more to track. Add characters once the scene works.

Can I use my own characters in a Character AI room?

Character AI lists custom characters as a feature, so you can create your own. Rooms work best with characters written to contrast, such as a cautious one and a reckless one. The records do not detail how custom characters are added to a group chat, so check that step in the app.

Which other apps have group chat?

On file, OurDream AI and SpicyChat list group chat as a yes, and Nomi AI offers it on paid plans, where Standard lets you keep 10 group chats active. Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT have no group chat value in the records, so their support is unknown here.

Does c.ai+ improve rooms?

c.ai+ does not list group chat as a paid perk. It removes ads and slow mode and adds the best memory with 30 pins, which can help a busy room keep its thread. The price is $9.99 monthly or $94.99 yearly, it renews on its own, and is refunded only where the law demands it.
