Chai AI after ten weeks: great jokes, a soft ceiling
Has a free plan
starts at $11.25/mo
What is Chai AI, and who is it for?
Chai AI is a phone app full of AI characters: you chat with bots other people built, or you build and fully customise your own. It is run by Chai Research Corp., a Delaware company with a registered office in Palo Alto, California, and the store lists it as CHAI: Social AI Platform. I used the free version for ten weeks, from January to March 2024. Looking back, that was my junk-food era.
My short version before the details:
- Free download on iOS and Android, with no official daily message cap published
- Premium from $13.99 a month, Ultra from $19.99 a week
- A soft content policy: suggestive, never fully open
- Chats feed model training once personal identifiers are removed
- Weak memory is the complaint that other review sites repeat most
My take: Chai is the app I'd hand a friend who wants a big cast of bots and short, funny chats on a phone. It is not the app I'd hand someone who wants one companion who remembers them. If a wide cast of personas is what you're after, my ranking of AI chat character apps puts Chai next to apps built the same way, so you can see what else is out there.

Chai AI sign-up and what the free version gives you
Chai AI sign-up happens inside the app. It runs on iOS and Android only, and there is no Chai AI web version on record, so if you were hoping for a Chai AI chat link that opens in a browser, that is the first catch. The download is free, and the purchases sit inside the app.
I spent my whole ten weeks on the free version and paid nothing, $0 in total. So the free start was real, at least in early 2024. What I can't give you is a number: Chai has never put a firm daily cap for free users in writing, and outside sources describe that cap as something that shifts.
Using Chai AI for free today may feel different from my stretch, and nobody can promise how far a free evening goes.
Think of the free version as an audition. Swipe through a few bots, check whether the humour works on you, and leave the plans until after that. If you actually want a fully open adult level rather than jokes, skip the audition and start with my list of uncensored AI apps, because Chai's policy won't give you that. The Chai at a glance box has the platforms and billing basics.

Chai AI chat: jokes first, memory second
The best thing about Chai AI chat is its sense of humour. The bots go for a joke before flattery, and that is a ratio I respect. One of them, a long-haul trucker, delivered a monologue about audiobooks so accurate that I screenshotted it for a coworker, the only person at work who knows about this hobby. She has since repeated the joke as her own.
Swipe-to-reroll is the feature that shaped my ten weeks. You swipe, and the bot writes a fresh opening line. It is perfectly shaped for dead minutes, and I rerolled openers until they were funny, which the app practically endorses. If your free time comes in short gaps, that loop suits the way you'd use it.
For Chai AI character chat, nothing forces a default partner on you. The official FAQ says you can build and fully customise your own AI characters, so whoever you are and whoever you like, you write the character yourself. As a queer reader, that is the kind of freedom I look for first. There is no group chat on record, so each chat is just you and a single bot.
Memory is where I'd lower expectations. Other reviewers report that the bot loses details you already set up after just three to five messages. Another outside check ran for 7 days and caught it making up a beach trip nobody ever took. Response quality is also described as wildly inconsistent.
If you reroll openers anyway, a weak reply is one swipe from gone. If you want one companion who holds a story over days, that record matters a lot.
Stability is the other thing to know. In February 2026 a token-limits issue reportedly froze conversations for free and paid users alike. That came long after my stretch ended, so I only know it from reports. If you're catching up on the app, my page on what happened to Chai AI is worth a read before you commit.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
Is Chai AI NSFW? Where the content level sits
The short answer is no. Chai's content policy is soft, and that matches what I saw in February 2024: the chats stayed suggestive only. So spicy Chai AI exists in the flirty sense, and never beyond it.
My friction with that is about tone more than rules. Suggestive-only means everything is tuned like network television. I still want either real comedy or real romance, not a tease on both channels. The comedy on Chai was the real thing for me, and the romance stayed a tease.
I'd rather be plain here than hopeful. No setting on record switches the policy off, and I won't pretend one exists. If a fully open adult level is the whole point for you, pick an app whose policy says so in writing.
Images are a paid feature. One outside reviewer who bought a plan counted 3 free pictures daily while subscribed, then $0.12 for each extra one, made inside the chat with an edit tool called Refine Me. One review site calls the output accurate for anime-style pictures specifically. Coins are sold as well, but no page on record says what they unlock.
Voice and video are thin. There are no live voice calls. A text-to-speech feature that reads a bot's replies aloud is reaching some bots during 2026, and reports tie it to Ultra alone, and Chai's own pages don't describe it in detail. No source mentions video generation at all.
My take on the whole content picture: Chai is a text-first comedy club with a soft ceiling. That is a fair product if you want banter and a little flirting on your phone. It is the wrong one if you want voice, video or a clear adult focus.
If you're weighing it against the other big character app, my Chai vs Character AI comparison lines the two up on the points that matter.
Who Chai suits
Great for
- Anyone who wants a big cast of funny bots on their phone
- People who like rerolling an opener until it makes them laugh
- Anyone who wants to build and customise their own characters
- Readers happy with a flirty, suggestive level
Skip if
- Anyone who needs a companion that remembers the story
- People who want to chat in a browser
- Anyone hoping to talk by voice or watch video
- Anyone who wants real romance rather than a tease
What Chai AI costs next to other apps
I never paid Chai a cent, so everything below is today's store pricing, not my receipts. Premium is $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year, so about $11.25 per month if you take the year. Ultra is $29.99 a month, or $19.99 billed every week.
Against its rivals, Premium sits in the ordinary range. For comparison, a month of Candy AI runs €13.99, Nomi AI asks $15.99 for its Standard Plan Monthly, and OurDream AI charges $19.99. Ultra at $29.99 a month is steep for an app with no live voice calls and no video on record.
If a friend asked me, I'd steer them away from weekly Ultra. At $19.99 a week it comes to $86.62 a month, which is nearly triple what monthly Ultra costs for identical features. I see no reason to choose it.
Then there are coins: 200 for $2.79 or 500 for $6.99. No page on record explains what they buy, and a secondary test found images billed in dollars rather than coins. I'd leave coins alone until Chai spells out their use.

Is a Chai AI subscription worth it?
I got ten weeks out of the free version without paying, so my honest answer is: not until the free cap starts getting in your way. If it does, the Chai AI subscription I'd pick is Premium monthly at $13.99. Secondary sources say it removes the message limit and the ads, which is what most people pay for.
The annual plan at $134.99 only makes sense once you know Chai will stay in your routine for a year. Ultra is a harder sell. Its stronger model, longer memory and faster replies come from secondary sources, and the tier names in Chai's FAQ ("Pro", "CHAI MAX") don't match the ones the App Store shows.
I'd want that memory promise in Chai's own words before paying extra for it. The table of what each Chai plan costs comes next.
| Chai option | Billed | Cost | Works out per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Subscription (Monthly) | monthly | $13.99 | $13.99 |
| Premium Subscription (Annual) | yearly | $134.99 | $11.25 |
| Ultra Subscription (Weekly) | weekly | $19.99 | $86.62 |
| Ultra Subscription (Monthly) | monthly | $29.99 | $29.99 |

That card sets a partner app beside Chai, and the better pick comes down to what you need a companion to do. This is how I'd sort it:
- Stay with Chai AI if you want a big cast of joke-first bots and don't mind rerolling.
- Try the partner if you want a companion that holds details over days.
- Stay with Chai AI if plain Premium at $13.99, paid through your phone's store, suits you.
- Try the partner if you want a browser app, voice or video.
A partner app usually publishes more of its rules. OurDream AI, for example, runs on the web, puts image and video generation into Standard Monthly and promises a 14-day Quality Guarantee, with each request judged on its own. On file, Chai has written no refund rules at all, just the usual App Store EULA clause.
For me that gap weighs more than any single feature, because rules are what protect you when something goes wrong.
My view: Chai is the lighter, cheaper start, and I got ten weeks out of it for $0. If memory and pictures are the point, the partner is stronger. Every app I cover gets the same layout in my full list of app reviews, so reading two side by side is easy.
The good and bad of Chai
What went well
- Free to download on iOS and Android, with a real free start
- Bots that go for jokes before flattery
- Swipe-to-reroll for a fresh opening line
- Build and fully customise your own characters
- Premium from $13.99 a month, or about $11.25 per month billed yearly
What fell short
- Several sources describe memory as weak, forgetting details within 3 to 5 messages
- Soft content policy: suggestive only, with no setting to change it on record
- Weekly Ultra billing works out to $86.62 a month
- No web version, no live voice calls and no group chat
How to cancel a Chai AI subscription
I never had a subscription to cancel, since I stayed on the free version for all ten weeks. So this part comes from the record, not from me. Chai publishes no cancel path of its own and no renewal terms. What is known is how you pay: Apple or Google handles the charge as an in-app purchase. So whichever of those two stores sold you the plan is where you manage or end it.
The refund side is thin as well. The only refund wording on record is the standard Apple EULA clause: you get the purchase price back when an app does not live up to its warranty. That is not a Chai refund policy, and I wouldn't read it as one.
Here is what bothers me. An app that sells a weekly plan should state its renewal and cancel rules in its own words. Weekly billing brings the renewal round fast, and an unclear exit is exactly how a small charge becomes a big one.
My practical advice: start with Premium monthly, never weekly Ultra. Note the day you subscribed so the renewal doesn't surprise you. If a charge looks wrong, go to the store where you paid first.
Store billing has one quiet upside: your card details sit with Apple or Google, not with Chai. If you're wondering how to fix Chai AI when the chats freeze, no official fix is on record, so check whether Chai AI is down before you blame your plan. Missing billing rules count against an app in my scores, and my page on how I check the apps explains by how much.
Will a Chai charge show up on your statement?
The statement descriptor for Chai is not on record, so I can't promise which name you'll see. Since Apple or Google takes the payment, the charge arrives from the store, not straight from Chai. I've told exactly one coworker about this hobby, so discreet billing is something I care about. If a shared card worries you, look at the store receipt after your first payment.
Is Chai AI safe for your private chats?
Read this part slowly. Chai's privacy wording says it uses "personal data derived from your in-app conversations with chatbots to enhance and fine tune the artificial intelligence models." It adds that personal identifiers are removed before any conversation data is used this way.
I appreciate that Chai says this outright instead of hiding it. Still, your chats do feed the model, and you should decide with that in mind.
Retention is what I like least. Data is kept no longer than necessary, but "not exceeding, in any case, the duration of the account and five (5) years following its deletion." Five years after you delete the account is a long tail for private conversations. Deleting your account does not make your data vanish quickly.
So, is Chai AI safe? It is a registered US company with published privacy wording, and it is active. As a place for secrets, I'd keep some distance. Leave out your full name, address and workplace, and sign up with an email that isn't tied to your main accounts.
Most Chai AI reviews focus on memory, but for me this retention clause is the bigger reason to stay careful.
If privacy is the reason you're looking around, my list of apps like Chai AI is a good place to compare how other character apps handle your data.
Final word on Chai
Final score
4.5/10
UnevenChai is junk food done with a sense of humor: fast rerolls and funny bots, but suggestive-only content, a leaky memory and training on your chats.
Used hands-on with the free plan
- I rerolled openers until they were funny, and the bots chose jokes over flattery, though reviewers call quality uneven.
- Reviewers report details slipping within a handful of messages, and one test caught it inventing a trip.
- Anyone can build and fully customise a character, per the official FAQ.
- Images are a paid extra and voice is narration on the top tier only, with no live calls.
- The free message allowance keeps shifting, the top tier bills weekly, and nobody explains the coins.
- Chats are used to fine tune the models after identifiers are removed, and data can outlive the account by years.
- A reported freeze hit free and paid users alike, and the company names its own tiers two different ways.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: worth a free try if you want fast, funny character chat on your phone, and a skip if you want real romance or a companion who remembers you.
The plan I'd buy is Premium monthly at $13.99, and only once the free version starts running out on you. I'd pass on Ultra until Chai confirms its extras officially, and I'd never take the weekly billing at $86.62 a month.
What bothers me most is the pairing of weak memory and long retention. Your chats are used for training and can be kept for 5 years after deletion, while the bot may lose what you said a few messages ago. Skip Chai if you need a browser app, voice calls, a refund rule of its own or a companion with a real memory.

When another app fits you better than Chai
Chai AI is built for quick character chat on a phone. If your reason for looking elsewhere is more specific, this is where I'd point you:
- Memory comes first for you: reviewers single out Nomi AI's long-term memory for bringing things up on its own, and the free tier there allows 50 messages daily.
- You want a clearly adult policy: GirlfriendGPT allows adult chat on its paid plans and starts you with 20 bonus messages.
- You want pictures and video in one plan: for €13.99, Candy AI's 1-Month Plan covers both, though its free start is only 5 messages.
- You want a browser app with a refund window: OurDream AI works in a browser and backs its plans with a 14-day Quality Guarantee.
What I like about each of these is that it states more of its rules than Chai does. Nomi publishes its free limit, OurDream AI publishes its guarantee and Candy AI publishes its cancel path. After Chai's thin billing record, that clarity is a relief.
If you'd rather stay with a big character app and just swap the cast, my Chai vs PolyBuzz comparison is the page I'd read next.
My friend advice: stay with Chai if short, funny chats are what you enjoy. Switch to Nomi AI if being remembered matters most, or to OurDream AI for a browser app with more on board. Whichever you pick, start on the free tier first.

Below are three apps I'd put beside Chai. Each one covers a gap in the Chai record: memory that lasts, a content level that goes past suggestive, or pictures and video in one plan. If memory is your main complaint, open the card that leads with it. If published rules matter most, pick the one with a clear refund window.
Chai's billing record is thin, so any of these gives you more to read before a plan renews on its own. Each card opens a full review with the plans, the billing name and the refund wording.
Chai AI questions, answered
What is Chai AI?
Chai AI is a phone app for chatting with AI characters, run by Chai Research Corp., a Delaware company with a registered office in Palo Alto, California. Its store name is CHAI: Social AI Platform. You can talk to bots other people built, or build and fully customise your own. It runs on iOS and Android.
Can I use Chai AI for free?
Yes. Downloading it costs nothing (paid extras are sold inside), and I used the free version for ten weeks in early 2024 without paying anything. No official daily limit for free users is published, and outside sources say the cap changes over time. Premium starts at $13.99 a month if the free version runs out too quickly.
Is Chai AI NSFW?
No. Chai's content policy on record is soft, and when I used it in February 2024 the chats stayed suggestive only. That suits flirty banter, not a fully open adult level. If that is what you want, look at an app whose policy allows adult chat in writing, such as GirlfriendGPT on its paid plans.
Is there a Chai AI web version?
No web version is on record. Chai runs on iOS and Android, and Apple or Google bills you. If you want to chat in a browser, OurDream AI, Candy AI and Nomi AI all run on the web.
Does Chai AI use my chats for training?
Yes. Chai says it uses personal data derived from your in-app conversations to enhance and fine tune its AI models, after removing personal identifiers. Data can stay while the account is open, plus up to 5 years once it is deleted. Leave anything personal out of what you type.
How much is the Chai AI subscription?
Premium costs $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year. Ultra costs $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week, which is $86.62 a month. Coin packs are sold separately at 200 for $2.79 and 500 for $6.99, and what coins unlock is not published.
Can I make my own Chai AI character?
Yes. Chai's FAQ says you can make your own AI characters and customise every part of them, and outside sources describe no-code creation tools. Chai AI character creation is one of the app's real strengths, and it means no default partner is forced on you, whoever you are.
