What is HammerAI, and why do I call it the privacy one?

HammerAI is a character hub and roleplay app from Sunspot LLC that combines cloud chat, local models in a desktop app and an image generator. You can reach it through the web, iOS or Android. I used it for four months, May to August 2026, without paying a cent, and in my head it is filed as "the privacy one".

That label is earned: I ran it locally on my own machine, so nothing I typed left the house.

My short version, before the details:

  • I spent $0 over four months, mostly on local models
  • The free plan gives 600 cloud messages a day, and local chat is free and unlimited
  • Paid plans are Starter at $9, Advanced at $18 and Ultimate at $35, all monthly
  • Paid chat never touches credits; images cost 10 and text-to-speech 5
  • All purchases are final, with no refunds

My take: this is the app I'd hand to a friend who cares about data and doesn't mind a slightly technical setup. The price of all that freedom is complexity, from cloud or local models to credits and lorebooks. If you want a simpler character app to set against it, my CrushOn AI review is a useful point of contrast.

HammerAI free: the free plan and the local route

There are two free doors here, and I used the quieter one. The free cloud plan gives 600 messages a day, a maximum context of 8,192 tokens, 2 cloud models and 0 monthly credits. That daily allowance beats most rivals by a mile.

The second door is the desktop app. In May 2026 I installed it and ran the models locally, and the FAQ calls local chat "100% free", with no account needed. For me that was the whole appeal: my professional paranoia about data had nowhere to be, and honestly, it was restful.

The friction is real, though. Installation is one step more technical than normal-people apps, and I felt like both the customer and the IT department. Other reviewers report that on a mid-range laptop, local models answer slower than the cloud ones, and that the first model download is several gigabytes.

Images are the one thing free won't cover: with 0 credits, they need a plan or a pack. If you want pictures from the first minute instead, my Candy AI review shows a very different free start. Everything else sits in the HammerAI at a glance box below.

Running a tabletop one-shot: HammerAI roleplay in practice

The tabletop session is where HammerAI shone for me. The roleplay tools feel built for game masters, so in June 2026 I ran a one-shot tabletop session for my friends. It handled the dice bureaucracy beautifully while I handled the snacks, and yours truly got to be the dungeon master without doing any homework.

That fits the feature list. Group chats let you talk with up to ten characters at once, lorebooks are listed as "unlimited dynamic memory", and every plan includes automatic conversation memory through rolling summaries. For HammerAI roleplay with several voices in one scene, that set-up is rarer than it should be.

Memory is the one place the free plan feels tight. The free context is 8,192 tokens, and it grows to 16,384 on Starter, 32,768 on Advanced and 65,536 on Ultimate. Other reviewers report that characters forgot earlier details in long sessions on the free context, and that lorebooks helped.

For a single evening like mine, that is fine; for a campaign that runs for weeks, I'd plan to write the key facts into a lorebook.

On HammerAI chat quality, one outside write-up rates the top community characters as well written for what you pay, and notes that messages cost no credits. That matches how I'd sum it up: a writer's tool first, a companion app second.

There is also a text-to-speech library of 746 voices in 34 languages, but no live voice calls and no video. If you want those, this is the wrong shop. For how other apps handle memory and voice, my full list of app reviews covers each one on the same terms.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

HammerAI NSFW rules and the character tools

The content policy says adult content is allowed, and nothing on the pricing page presents it as a paid unlock. I like that. Mature roleplay is treated as a normal part of a flexible creative tool, not as the hook that sells the subscription. Nothing on file names a separate content toggle, so I won't invent one.

The character tools are the strong side. You can create characters on the web and on desktop, and the iOS listing mentions building AI characters of your own from a blank page, or importing them. Import matters to me: you are not stuck with whatever the hub happens to stock.

On comfort and inclusivity, I can only go by what's written. The records list no gender or appearance presets, so there's nothing to praise or criticise there. A free-form character creator does leave room to write whoever you want, and 746 voices give plenty of choice in how a character sounds.

The HammerAI image generator is the paid corner. Cloud images come from 22 image models at 10 credits each, and the free plan has 0 credits. So text is free and generous, pictures are not.

My take: for readers who mostly write and read, this is one of the calmest adult-content setups I cover, especially run locally where nothing leaves your machine. For readers who want pictures on every message, the credit meter will matter more. If an unfiltered chat is the main thing you're after, my uncensored AI app rankings compare the apps that allow it and on which plans.

Who HammerAI suits

Great for

  • Privacy-minded readers happy to run local models on their own computer
  • Game masters and story writers who like group scenes with up to ten characters
  • Anyone who wants a big free daily message allowance
  • People who want unlimited paid chat without a token meter

Skip if

  • Anyone who wants an app that simply works after one tap
  • People with an older laptop who hate noisy fans and slow replies
  • Anyone hoping for live voice calls or video
  • Readers who expect a refund if they change their mind

How the prices compare with other apps

I never paid during my four months, so these are today's prices, not mine. Starter is $9 a month, which is lower than most apps I cover. Candy AI's monthly plan is €13.99, Nomi AI's Standard Plan Monthly is $15.99, GirlfriendGPT Premium is $15 and OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99.

The bigger difference is how the money works. Every paid HammerAI plan has unlimited cloud messages, and messages don't use credits. Credits pay only for images, at 10 each, and text-to-speech, at 5 each. Many rivals meter chat itself with coins or caps, and that's what makes a bill hard to predict.

Where HammerAI gives ground is media. There's no video on file and no live voice call, while several rivals bundle those in. You pay less and get a writing-first tool with an image generator attached, not a full companion package.

For heavy text roleplay on a budget, I think it's hard to beat. For a companion you call and hear, it's the wrong fit.

Paid chat is unlimited and uses no credits. Images cost 10 credits and text-to-speech 5; plan credits expire each billing period, pack credits never do.

Which plan is worth the money?

Honestly, maybe none at first. Four months on free local chat never pushed me to upgrade, so if your computer can carry the models, start there. If you'd rather stay on the cloud, my pick is Starter at $9 a month.

Starter fixes the free plan's two pain points: context doubles to 16,384 tokens and messages become unlimited. It also brings 1,500 credits, which is enough for 150 images or 300 text-to-speech clips, plus group chats and lorebooks.

Advanced at $18 and Ultimate at $35 mostly buy more context, more cloud models and more credits. Worth it only for heavy image users or very long stories.

Two details matter. Plan credits expire each billing period, while pack credits never expire, so a 600-credit pack at $4.99 can beat a bigger plan for irregular image use. And the plan cards show 1,500, 3,500 and 9,000 credits, while the FAQ says 2,000, 5,000 and 12,000. I'd plan on the lower figures. The table right after this lists every tier.

Ultimate monthly $35.00 $35.00

The closest alternative I would suggest

The first button above goes to the official HammerAI website, the address I'd use to sign up. You'll also see the name written as "Hammer AI", so don't let the space throw you.

Before paying for anything, keep these points in mind:

  • Paid plans are billed through Gank, a third-party payment service
  • All purchases are final, with no refunds once complete
  • Subscriptions bought inside the mobile app are managed in your device's settings
  • Plan credits expire each billing period; pack credits do not

The refund rule is the part that bothers me. With no refunds at all, the smart move is to stay free until you're sure, and with 600 cloud messages a day plus local chat, you have room to decide.

If you'd rather have pictures, video and voice calls under one subscription, OurDream AI takes the opposite approach, with coins and a higher monthly price. My OurDream AI review shows how that compares, and some readers will prefer it.

The good and bad of HammerAI

What went well

  • Local-model chat on the desktop is free, unlimited and needs no account
  • 600 free cloud messages a day
  • Unlimited paid chat that uses no credits
  • Group chats with up to ten characters, great for tabletop-style scenes
  • HammerAI says it does not use your chats to train AI models

What fell short

  • Local setup is more technical than most apps, and laptop fans work hard
  • The free context of 8,192 tokens is small for long stories
  • All purchases are final, with no refunds
  • No live voice calls or video

Cancelling, pausing and the no-refund rule

No subscription on my side meant no cancelling for me. On paper it's simple. The pricing FAQ says to click the "Manage" button on your plan, and you're redirected to Gank, where you can cancel, pause or modify the subscription. I like the pause option; not every app offers a middle ground between paying and leaving.

If you subscribed through the mobile app, the FAQ sends you to your device's Settings, then Subscriptions, instead. So remember where you bought the plan, because web and app subscriptions live in different places.

Renewal is described loosely. It's a monthly subscription through Gank, and the FAQ says credits are topped up again when each new billing period begins, but there's no explicit auto-renewal sentence on file. I'd treat it as renewing every month until you cancel.

Refunds are the hard edge. The wording is blunt: every purchase is final, and since GankNow has no refund option, nothing comes back once you've bought. As far as the wording goes, that covers credit packs too. My advice is to buy a single month or the smallest pack first, never a big pack on impulse.

Payment runs through Gank by credit card and other methods, and mobile subscriptions go through the app store. The name on a card statement is not on file, which matters if you want discreet billing. Since the charge comes through a third party, I wouldn't assume it shows the app's own name. For how I weigh refund rules and billing clarity against price, see how I check the apps.

Is HammerAI safe with your conversations?

This is why I call it the privacy one. In its privacy policy, HammerAI promises that it doesn't train AI models in-house on what users give it, and that your conversations, characters and stories are never used to train or fine-tune any model. That's the plain promise I wish every companion app made.

There's a fair caveat. Third-party model providers may retain data, so when you chat with cloud models your words pass through outside providers, and HammerAI's promise covers HammerAI, not them. That's the beauty of staying local. Running the models on my own machine meant nothing I said left the house, which is about as discreet as this category gets.

Deletion is clear too. Deleting your account erases all data related to it from HammerAI's servers, including cloud characters and stories, and it's irreversible. I'd copy anything you want to keep first.

Who runs it, and is it legit?

The company is Sunspot LLC. Its country and launch date aren't on file, so I can't speak to its age or where it's based. The pricing page, FAQ, terms and privacy policy are detailed and specific, which counts for something in a category full of vague policies.

Access is by self-declaration: users confirm they meet the minimum age before using the service, and no ID check is described. Payments run through Gank rather than directly, so the strict refund rule comes from that side.

On healthy use, one line from me: treat it like a game night, not a nightly habit. If you're still deciding what kind of character app suits you, my guide to the best AI chat character apps sorts the main options.

Final word on HammerAI

Final score

7.6/10

Solid

HammerAI is the privacy pick: it runs locally, costs nothing, and runs a tabletop session, if you do not mind being your own IT department.

Used hands-on with the free plan

  • It handled the dice bureaucracy of a whole tabletop one-shot while I handled snacks.
  • Rolling summaries and lorebooks help, though the free context forgets older details in long sessions.
  • Game master tools, group chats, lorebooks and a choice of local or cloud models give real control.
  • Cloud images and text-to-speech draw on credits, while live calls and video are absent.
  • Local chat is free and unlimited on your own machine, and paid cloud messages cost no credits.
  • It runs on my own machine, so nothing I say leaves the house, and the company says it does not train on chats.
  • Four months logged zero crashes, though install is a step more technical and the laptop fans work hard.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: HammerAI is worth it for anyone who wants lots of free roleplay and real privacy, while anyone after a slick companion that does voice calls and video should look elsewhere. Four months, May to August 2026, and it stayed the privacy one for me: local models, nothing leaving the house, $0 spent. It was worth it, even with fans spinning like the AV cart of destiny.

The plan I'd buy, if any, is Starter at $9 a month, for unlimited cloud chat and double the free context. What bothers me most is the no-refund rule, which turns every purchase into a final decision. Skip it if you want everything to just work out of the box.

The closest alternative I would suggest

When another app makes more sense

HammerAI covers a lot of ground, but it isn't for everyone. Here's how I'd pick a HammerAI alternative, depending on what you're after:

  • Live voice calls: Nomi AI includes them on its Standard plan, and Candy AI and OurDream AI list them too
  • Video: OurDream AI and Candy AI both list video generation on paid plans
  • Long-term memory without setup: one outside review credits Nomi AI with proactive long-term memory
  • A simpler companion app: Candy AI centres on custom companions with pictures and voice

The trade-off is that almost all of these meter something HammerAI doesn't. Without a subscription, OurDream AI takes 1 Dreamcoin for every message, GirlfriendGPT Premium caps messages at 5,000 a month, and Nomi AI's free plan stops at 50 messages a day. None of them matches 600 free messages a day, let alone unlimited local chat.

So before you switch, ask whether the missing feature is worth giving up that allowance. For readers who mostly write stories, I doubt it. For readers who want a companion to call and hear, it clearly is.

If you'd like a big character hub instead, my SpicyChat review looks at another popular option. My own plan: keep HammerAI as the free base and add a second app only for the one thing it lacks.

Instead of HammerAI

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

If a friend asked me about HammerAI, I'd keep it short. Start free, and if your computer can take it, install the desktop app and run the models locally with no account, like I did for four months. Expect a slightly technical setup and busy fans. Use the 600 cloud messages a day when you're away from that machine.

If memory slips in long stories, try Starter for a month, since it doubles the context. Buy credit packs small, because purchases are final. Refunds, privacy and the local setup are all in the answers below.

HammerAI questions, answered plainly

What is HammerAI?

HammerAI is a character hub and roleplay app from Sunspot LLC, on the web, iOS and Android, with a desktop app that runs AI models locally. It mixes cloud chat, local chat and an image generator. I used it for four months in 2026, mostly locally, and never paid. Paid plans run from $9 to $35 a month.

Is HammerAI NSFW free and unlimited?

The content policy allows adult content, and nothing on file shows a paid unlock for it. Local-model chat on the desktop is free and unlimited. Cloud chat on the free plan is capped at 600 messages a day and becomes unlimited on every paid plan. Images always cost credits, 10 per image.

How much does HammerAI cost?

Starter costs $9 a month, Advanced $18 and Ultimate $35. Each paid plan has unlimited cloud messages that use no credits, plus monthly credits for images and text-to-speech. Credit packs run from $1.99 for 200 credits to $99.99 for 20,000 credits, and pack credits never expire.

Is HammerAI safe?

HammerAI states that it does not use your conversations, characters or stories to train or fine-tune any AI models, although third-party model providers may retain data. Deleting your account erases its data from HammerAI's servers and cannot be undone. Local chat on the desktop needs no account, and that is how I used it.

Is the local desktop app hard to set up?

A little. Installation is one step more technical than typical apps, and I felt like both the customer and the IT department. Local models also work your laptop hard; my fans spun loudly. Other reviewers report that the first model download is several gigabytes and that a mid-range laptop running local models replies more slowly than the cloud does.

Can I get a refund from HammerAI?

No. The pricing FAQ says all purchases are final and that GankNow does not support refunds once a purchase is complete. To cancel, click Manage on your plan to reach Gank, where you can cancel, pause or change it. Mobile subscriptions are managed in your device's subscription settings.
