Is Chub AI down, or is it just me?
The status box at the top of this page shows our own check of Chub, run twice a day, with the time of the last check. A lot can change between two checks, so here is a sensible order of steps as well. Chub AI keeps an official status page at chub.ai/status (the old status.chub.ai address forwards there), and that is where an outage should show first.
One quirk makes Chub look broken when it isn't. The site is a single-page web app: the browser downloads an almost empty page and then builds everything with JavaScript. If a script is blocked or a download stalls, you see a blank screen, even though the server is answering normally.
The order I'd suggest when Chub wobbles:
- Open chub.ai/status in a private window, then load chub.ai itself
- Switch off script blockers and aggressive privacy extensions for the site
- Try a second browser or your phone, since Chub is web only with no native app
- Close extra tabs of the same chat, because parallel requests can trigger errors
- Give it a little while before assuming anything is lost
That fourth point is not a guess. Chub's own docs say unlimited means one person at a time, and several requests fired together from one account come back with a 429 error. I like that it's written down, and it explains plenty of "Chub is down" moments that are really two tabs arguing.
If you're here because you just moved over from another app, some housekeeping on the old one can wait until Chub behaves. When you're ready, this guide on wiping your old Character AI conversations walks through it. Then the apps side by side, just below, line Chub up against the companion apps I cover, with what each offers for free, so you already know where you'd go on a bad night.

What does Chub AI status code 503 mean?
A 503 is the standard web code for "service unavailable". In plain words, the server is there but can't handle your request right now, usually because it is overloaded or being worked on. Chub doesn't publish anything about 503 errors specifically, so I won't pretend to know the cause behind any given one.
What I can say is that a 503 is almost never about your account, your characters or your payment.
It helps to know which error you are looking at. Here is how I'd read the common ones:
- 503: the service is busy or down for work, so wait and look at chub.ai/status
- 429: too many requests at once from your account, which Chub's docs name directly
- A blank white page: the JavaScript app didn't load, which is often a browser issue
- A spinning reply that never lands: the model side is slow, even if the site loads
My take: 429 is the one you can fix yourself, by closing duplicate tabs and sending one message at a time. A 503 you can only wait out. A blank page is worth one try in another browser before you blame Chub.
Does paying for Mars protect you from outages?
Not from a real outage, no. Mars is Chub's only listed subscription at $20 a month, and it opens every Chub language model, Soji included, without limits, plus unlimited voice and multimedia generation and early access to new models. None of that keeps servers up when they go down.
What bothers me more is the money side if Chub has a rough week. Payment is crypto only, which Chub says keeps card companies out of its content decisions. Renewal wording isn't on the official subscription page, and the cancel path and refund rule come only from another review site: cancel under Profile > Subscription, keep using it until the period is over, and "No refunds outside exceptional cases."
With crypto, I'd buy a single month at once and never pay on the evening of an outage.
For the wider picture beyond uptime, my complete Chub AI review covers the character creator, memory, images and who the app suits.

Where can you chat while Chub AI is down?
A backup doesn't have to replace Chub, only cover the evening. The catch is that Chub is unusually open, since its docs say the platform does not restrict "in any meaningful capacity" the characters posted or the interactions you have with them. Few apps match that, so be realistic about what a stand-in will allow.
These are the stand-ins on file, with the free start each one gives:
- SpicyChat: unlimited text chat on its Default model with ads and possible waiting lines, adult content allowed, web only
- Nomi AI: a lasting free plan of 50 messages a day at up to 400 characters each, no ads, on web, iOS and Android
- GirlfriendGPT: 20 non-expiring bonus messages, then 10 a day from Daily Login, adult chat on paid plans only
- Candy AI: a very small free taste of 3 to 5 messages in total, adult content for paying members only
If you want the closest match to Chub's open character library, SpicyChat is the one I'd open first. It is also character-driven, allows adult content and doesn't count free messages. Nomi AI is the calmer pick for people who mostly want one companion who remembers them.
GirlfriendGPT and Candy AI make more sense as a longer-term move than a one-night stand-in. Their free starts are small, and adult chat sits behind a paid plan on both. Pay only once you know you'd want to stay, and note the names on the card statement: NDAI.CC for GirlfriendGPT and EverAI for Candy AI.
What I'd avoid is paying for a second subscription the same night Chub goes down. Outages usually pass. A new plan bought in a hurry keeps billing long after.
If you do find yourself leaving Chub for good, my shortlist of the best apps to try instead of Chub AI ranks the options by how well they cover what Chub does.
Just below this section is the quick-facts box for OurDream AI, another web app built around roleplay with adult content allowed. The official free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start and 1 Dreamcoin per message, while its help centre says free dreamcoins aren't currently offered, so treat that number as one that may change.

Is Chub AI shutting down, or is it just a rough patch?
When a site goes dark, the next worry is usually whether it's coming back at all. I can only tell you what's on file, and none of it points to a shutdown. The domain and the routes on record answered normally.
The company, Chub AI Inc, keeps an official status page, a docs site and a live subscription page that lists Mars at $20 a month.
Some signals are mixed, and I'd rather lay them out than hide them. Another review site reports traffic down about 65% over recent months. The free offer also changed during 2026: the official subscription page now describes one-time trial credits worth "a few dozen messages" for new accounts, while older write-ups describe a standing free plan with daily caps that disagreed with each other. Put together, I read that as a platform tightening costs, not one closing its doors.
One practical side effect of that change: if you signed up recently and replies stopped, your trial credits may simply be used up. From the chat window that can look like an outage, yet the status page will show nothing wrong. The trial is described as one-time, so new credits won't turn up the next morning.
Stability also depends on how Chub is built. There is no native app: Chub AI Inc holds an Apple developer account with zero published titles, and no Android app of theirs was found. That makes the status page even more central, since there is no app to fall back on when the site stumbles.
My advice for peace of mind is simple. Keep a copy of anything you'd hate to lose, such as your character descriptions, scenarios and example dialogs, in a note on your own device. Chub's character creator holds a lot of fields, and rebuilding a detailed character from memory is miserable.
No official export or deletion steps are on file for Chub, and its privacy policy couldn't be read, so your own copy is the only backup you control.
If something else about your account is bugging you, like cancelling, clearing data or changing a setting on one of the other apps, my help centre with step-by-step answers is the place to look.

Why does Chub AI load but not reply?
This is the frustrating middle ground: the site opens, your character is there, and the answer never arrives. The cause usually sits between Chub's website and the language model generating the reply. Chub offers its own models, and its docs also let you connect your own key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter or NovelAI, or run a model yourself through Kobold or Ooba.
That flexibility changes how you should read a stall. If you use Chub's own models, a slow or missing reply points to Chub. If you use your own key, the problem may sit with that provider instead, and Chub's status page won't show it. Worth knowing before you refresh the wrong thing.
Other reviewers report dialogue confusion and repetition on Chub, including the AI writing both sides of a conversation. That's not an outage, it's a model quirk. If replies arrive but read oddly, trimming a long chat or updating the Chat Memory summary tends to help more than waiting.
Voice and images can stall on their own, too. Chub's Imagine tool makes images inside the chat, and text-to-speech sits in the chat settings. When the text arrives but a picture or a voice clip doesn't, I'd treat it as a hiccup in that one feature and keep chatting, rather than reloading the whole session.
Where do the facts on this page come from?
Everything here comes from Chub's own pages, docs and subscription page, plus a clearly marked note from other review sites where the official pages can't be read. None of it is hands-on use. The status box at the top is our own automatic check, run twice a day.
Chub's main pages are an empty shell to simple fetch tools, which is why the official status page stays your best source between two of our checks.
My take: bookmark chub.ai/status. Know the difference between a 429 you caused and a 503 you can only wait out. Keep a copy of your characters somewhere else.
And if you want to know how the facts across this site are gathered and dated, my page on how I check the apps lays out the sources and how often they get refreshed.
Should you wait for Chub AI or switch apps?
Most of the time, wait. Short outages and busy-hour errors come and go on every web app, and Chub's model of one plan plus open characters is hard to replace. If your problem is a 429 or a blank page, you can usually fix it on your side.
I'd consider switching only if three things line up: the status page shows trouble for days, your Mars month is nearly up, and you've been meaning to try something with a native app or a steady free plan. Since Chub is web only and paid in crypto, some readers are happier on an app with a normal card checkout and an app-store download. That's a comfort choice, and a fair one.
A third option sits in between. Mars can be used as an OpenAI-style API in another chat frontend, and Chub's docs describe free self-hosting through Kobold or Ooba on your own compute. Neither route is for beginners, and I wouldn't set one up in the middle of an outage. If you're technical and hate waiting, though, it keeps your options open without leaving Chub entirely.
Which apps allow the same open content as Chub?
This matters, because many people come to Chub precisely for its hands-off content rules. If you leave, check the policy before the price. Here's how the apps on this page line up:
- SpicyChat allows adult content, and its free tier is unlimited text chat with ads
- Nomi AI allows adult content, with a free plan capped at 50 messages a day
- OurDream AI allows adult content, and chat costs 1 Dreamcoin per message
- Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT keep it behind their paid plans
If you're tempted by a bigger-name app instead, read its rules before you move your characters over, because not every popular app follows Chub's hands-off approach. For one well-known example, my page asking will Character AI allow NSFW content? sets out that app's side.
My honest verdict: stay with Chub through a normal outage, keep your characters backed up, and let an app switch be a calm decision on a day when everything is working, not a panic buy mid-error. Base it on content rules and money, never on one bad evening.
Common questions
Where is the official Chub AI status page?
Chub AI keeps its status page at chub.ai/status, and the older status.chub.ai address redirects there. It is the first place to look when the site won't load or replies stop. If the status page itself won't open, the whole site is most likely having trouble, and waiting is the only real fix.
Our status box at the top of this page checks Chub twice a day; between two checks, the official page is the fresher source.
What does a 503 error on Chub mean?
A 503 is the general web code for "service unavailable", meaning the server can't handle requests at that moment, usually from load or maintenance. Chub publishes nothing about 503 errors specifically. It is almost never tied to your account or payment, so there is nothing to fix on your side. Look at chub.ai/status, wait a few minutes and try again.
Why does Chub AI give me a 429 error?
Chub's docs say unlimited means unlimited for a single person, and concurrent requests from the same account return a 429 error. In practice, that usually means two tabs or two devices sending messages at the same time. Close the extra tabs, wait a moment and send one message at a time. This one you can fix yourself.
Why is Chub AI just a blank page?
Chub is a single-page web app that builds itself in your browser with JavaScript. If scripts are blocked or the download stalls, you get an empty screen even when the servers are fine. Turn off script blockers for the site, try a private window or another browser, then check chub.ai/status before assuming an outage.
Is there a Chub AI app I can use when the website is down?
No. Chub AI is web only. The company holds an Apple developer account with zero published apps, and no Android app of theirs was found. If the site is down, the app route is down too, so the status page and patience are your options, or a free start on another app for the evening.
Do I get a refund if Chub AI is down while I pay for Mars?
Nothing official on file covers outage refunds. Mars costs $20 a month and is paid in crypto only. Other review sites say there are no refunds outside exceptional cases and that cancelling happens under Profile > Subscription, with access until the end of the period. I'd pay month by month and not rely on getting money back for downtime.
