Is Character AI Down? Status Pages for Chat Apps

What to try when Character AI or another chat app stops working, and where to chat meanwhile, with backups picked from official prices and terms.

In a hurry? Pick one of these first

If Character AI won't load, you probably want two answers fast: is it just you, and where can you chat in the meantime. This hub covers both. The cards above are my backup picks if you want a second app ready.

One honest note: Candy AI's free start is tiny, only 3-5 messages, so treat it as a sample, while SpicyChat's free plan lets you keep texting with ads. Below are the status pages for the apps people ask about most. My take: a slow Character AI is not always a down Character AI.

Its free tier uses slow mode at high load, so a sluggish evening can be a queue, not an outage.

Pick the app you're stuck on and you'll land on its own page. If your app is fine but you're tired of refreshing, the ranked list below is where I'd look next. Keep in mind that Character AI keeps things SFW, while many apps here allow adult content, some only on paid plans (Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT among them).

My advice: pick one backup with a real free start before the next outage, not during it. Sign-ups go better when you're not annoyed. If adult content is part of why you want a backup, my NSFW AI chat ranking has the longer list.

A quick word on those ranks: they are about the apps, not about uptime. There is no outage history behind them, and I won't pretend otherwise. What matters to me is the free start and the fine print.

Candy AI's free account is a handful of messages in total, while Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day on a permanent free plan. That difference matters when you only need a stand-in for one evening. Not sure which kind of app you even want? The quiz below sorts that out.

If the quiz didn't settle it, the table below lines the apps up side by side. My way of reading it: price first, then where each app runs. Character AI works on web, iOS and Android, so if the website fails, the phone app is a fair second try before you give up for the night.

Several backups here are web only, which is fine on a laptop and less fine if you chat on your phone. Janitor AI, Nomi AI and PolyBuzz also have iOS and Android apps.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Numbers help put an outage in proportion. The figures below are about the market as a whole, with a source next to each one, so you can judge them yourself. My reading: this category is crowded, and that crowd helps you when your usual app goes quiet.

You're never short of a backup, and nobody should have to pay for one on day one. If an app asks for a card before a single free message, I'd move on. Most apps named on this page offer some free start, from Character AI's unlimited free messaging to GirlfriendGPT's 20 bonus messages.

If outages keep costing you evenings, it helps to have your options ready before the next one. The newsletter below tracks prices and deals, plus new apps each week, which is exactly the kind of heads-up I'd want when a favourite app is wobbly. It's one email field and nothing else.

I like it most for price changes, because renewals are where the money quietly goes. Candy AI, Nomi AI and SpicyChat all renew automatically until you cancel. That's normal, but it's worth knowing before you add a second subscription.

Below is the longer read, folded away so it doesn't get in your way. It covers what these status pages are for, how they're written, and the money questions that come up when an app you pay for stops working: app store billing, cancelling, refunds and what to do if you forgot to cancel. I put the privacy basics at the end, because an outage is a good moment to ask what an app keeps about you.

Open the part you need and skip the rest. If you'd rather ask directly, the help page is the place.

About these status pages

What the status pages are for

These pages exist for one annoying moment: the app you like won't load, and you want to know whether to wait, fix something on your end, or go elsewhere for the night. Each page covers one app. It gathers what's useful in that moment: the signs that look like an outage but aren't, the fixes worth trying first, and a short list of backups that suit the same kind of chat.

My view is that a status page shouldn't pretend to know more than it does. I can't see inside Character AI's servers, and neither can you. What I can do is point out the known things that often feel like downtime. Character AI's free tier runs in slow mode when load is high.

SpicyChat's free plan mentions possible waiting lines. Both feel broken on a busy night, and both are simply how those free plans are built.

The backups are picked with the same honesty. If an app's free start is tiny, I say so. If you want to weigh two backups properly before you commit, the side-by-side app comparisons go deeper than a status page can. And if you only need one evening of chat, a free plan is enough. Don't pay for a stand-in.

How a status page is written, and for whom

I write these for one reader: someone in the middle of a chat who just hit an error and is a little annoyed. That person doesn't want a lecture on servers. They want a yes, a no, or a "here's what to try", in plain words, near the top of the page.

So every status page follows the same order. First, what the problem most likely is and whether it's on your side. Then the fixes you can do yourself, from the simple ones up. Then what only the company can fix. Last, the backups, with their free start stated as a fact rather than a promise.

My sources are each app's official pages: pricing, terms, help articles and refund policies. Where a detail comes from other review sites instead, I say that too. I don't write outage stories, made-up timings or claims about how fast an app came back. If a number isn't documented, it isn't on the page. The full method sits on my page about how the apps are checked.

A word on tone. Being cut off in the middle of a chat you care about is irritating, and it's fine to care. I won't tell you to take a break or log off. My job is to get you back to chatting, whether that's the same app in an hour or a backup tonight.

On the money side, I'll point out the refund rule on every page. Paying for a month and then losing a weekend to downtime is exactly when people go looking for it, and it's better to know the answer before you get your hopes up.

The questions the status pages answer

Every status page answers the same handful of questions, in the order people tend to ask them.

Is it down for everyone, or just me? Nobody outside the company can promise a live answer, so the page shows you how to narrow it down yourself: another browser, the phone app instead of the website, a different network.

Is it down, or just slow? This one matters more than it looks. Character AI's free plan switches to slow mode at high load, and the $9.99-a-month c.ai+ plan takes it away. SpicyChat's free plan has possible waiting lines, and its Get a Taste plan at $5.95 skips them.

My take: if slowness is your only complaint, one of those small plans can fix it. If the service is truly down, no plan will.

Can I get my money back? Each page quotes the refund rule, and most in this niche are strict. Talkie AI keeps its fees as far as the law lets it, and Character AI refunds nothing unless a law says it has to.

Where do I go in the meantime? A short list of backups, each with its free start. If a backup catches your interest, read its full app review before you pay for anything. A review covers pricing, billing and the catch, which a status page only touches. I'd rather you spend five minutes reading than a month paying for the wrong app.

Paid through Apple or Google? Different rules

If you pay through Apple or Google, the app itself often can't cancel or refund you. Under Talkie AI's terms, changes and cancellations happen only in the app store the subscription was bought from. PolyBuzz sends iOS users to the Apple ID subscriptions screen and Android users to Google Play.

Janitor AI says mobile subscriptions are managed through the App Store or Google Play. Character AI's help centre says App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google.

My advice: before an outage makes you want to cancel, know which door you came in through. Paid on the website? Cancel on the website. Paid in the app?

Go to your phone's store. Doing it in the wrong place is an easy way to keep paying by mistake.

Cancelling and refunds, in short

An outage is a fair moment to think about cancelling. Before you do, know two things: cancelling stops the next renewal, and refunds are rare.

Here's how the refund rules read for a few apps on these pages:

  • Candy AI: outside the EU and UK, a refund request must come within 24 hours of paying.
  • OurDream AI: a 14-day Quality Guarantee, with each request judged on its own.
  • SpicyChat: fees are non-refundable once the account has been used, with refunds only in exceptional circumstances.
  • Character AI: no refunds unless the law demands one.
  • Janitor AI: subscriptions are generally non-refundable, except where its terms or the law require it.

My reading: if one bad evening has you annoyed, cancelling is fine, but don't count on money back. The window is short where it exists at all. Candy AI's 24 hours is the kind of rule you have to know in advance, not discover later.

And if you decide to stay, the monthly plan isn't always the smart buy, since yearly plans cost less per month. The current coupons and deals are worth a look before you pay full price again.

If you forgot to cancel

It happens. A renewal lands on a month you barely used, maybe one with a long outage in it. Here's how I'd handle it.

First, look at the statement name so you know which app charged you. Several are not obvious: SpicyChat shows as NDAI.CHAT, GirlfriendGPT as NDAI.CC, Candy AI as EverAI and OurDream AI as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL. Second, cancel right away so the next period doesn't renew too. Third, ask for a refund anyway, politely and quickly.

Candy AI's 24-hour window and OurDream AI's 14-day Quality Guarantee both reward speed. Where the terms say no refunds, a request costs you nothing but a message.

I don't love how strict most refund rules are. But I also don't think a forgotten renewal is worth a fight. Cancel, ask once, and set a reminder next time.

When your app isn't listed here

Ten apps have their own status page so far: Character AI, Janitor AI, PolyBuzz, Chub AI, SpicyChat, Talkie AI, Chai, CrushOn AI, OurDream AI and Venice AI. If yours isn't among them, the basic moves still apply.

Try the other way in: if the website fails, try the phone app where there is one, and the other way round. Close the tab and log in again. Then ask yourself whether you're on a free plan with limits, because a used-up allowance can look like an error.

GirlfriendGPT's free tier, for example, is a one-time 20 bonus messages topped up by 10 a day through Daily Login, and Candy AI's free account is a handful of messages in total. Once those run out, chat stops until you pay or the next allowance arrives.

My take: before you blame the servers, rule out the paywall. It's the less dramatic answer, and the easiest one to confirm.

Getting started with a backup app

The best time to pick a backup is before you need one. If you wait for an outage, you'll sign up in a hurry and pick whatever loads first.

Here's the order I'd go in. Decide what you want from the backup: a similar character hub, a companion with memory, or an app with a looser content policy than Character AI, which keeps things SFW. Then look at the free start, because a backup you never pay for is the ideal backup.

A few free starts I like, in plain numbers:

Nomi AI offers 50 messages a day on a permanent free plan. SpicyChat offers unlimited text chat on its Default model, with ads and possible waiting lines. Janitor AI's free plan includes unlimited JLLM chats. CrushOn AI gives 100 message credits a month.

And a few I'd treat as a taste only: Candy AI's handful of messages, and Chub AI, which has no standing free plan, just one-time trial credits sent out to new users.

If you want to see the whole field ranked rather than a short list, the ranked app lists sort apps by category. My personal rule: keep one backup on a free plan, and only ever pay for the app you open most. Two subscriptions for one hobby is where the money starts to leak.

Privacy basics while an app is down

An outage is a good moment to think about what an app keeps about you, and who is behind it.

Three things I'd want you to know about any app you use. First, who the company is and where it's based. Character AI is run by Character Technologies, Inc., and SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT both come from NextDay AI, with GirlfriendGPT governed by the laws of Quebec, Canada.

Second, what shows on your bank statement, since that's the privacy question that's easy to forget. Third, what happens to your chats.

On that last point, I'd be careful with anything unconfirmed. Other reviewers report that CrushOn AI uses chat logs for AI training and advertising, and no official CrushOn AI page confirms it. I wouldn't treat that as fact, but I also wouldn't share anything there I'd hate to see leak.

My simple rule: chat as if a stranger could one day read it. Skip real names, addresses and work details. It costs nothing, and it makes any breach less scary.

Reading a privacy policy: my short checklist

Privacy policies are long, but you only need a few answers from them. Here's what I'd look for, in plain questions.

Does the company use your chats to train its AI? Can your account and chats be deleted, and how long until they're gone? Are chats shared with advertisers or other partners? Where is the company based, and whose law applies? If the policy won't answer those in plain words, I'd take that as an answer too.

Then look past the policy at the payment side. Secrets AI scored 8.5-9/10 for privacy and discretion in two independent scoring reviews, with an anonymous sign-up and crypto payment option, and its statement name is S LABS INC. For me, that combination is what discretion looks like in practice: fewer details handed over at sign-up, and a neutral name on your statement.

That's the long version. If you only remember one thing, make it this: slow isn't always down, and a used-up free allowance isn't an outage either. Rule those out first, then decide whether to wait or switch for the night. My own preference is to wait an hour before signing up anywhere new, unless you already have a backup ready.

The quick answers below cover the questions that come up when Character AI or a similar app stops responding. For wider questions about billing and accounts, the help section has more.

Common questions

Is Character AI down right now?

I can't give you a live answer from here, and I'd be wary of any page that claims to. What you can do is narrow it down: try another browser, the phone app instead of the website, or a different network. If Character AI loads but crawls, that may not be an outage at all. The free tier uses slow mode at high load, so a busy evening can feel like downtime.

Why is Character AI so slow on the free plan?

The free plan offers unlimited messaging, but it shows ads and uses slow mode, a reduced response speed, when load is high. Paying $9.99 a month for c.ai+ ends slow mode and raises you to the highest daily limits. My take: if speed is your only complaint and you use Character AI daily, c.ai+ is a fair buy. If you use it now and then, living with slow mode is fine.

Will paying for c.ai+ help when Character AI is down?

Only with slowness, not with a real outage. c.ai+ removes slow mode, but if the service itself is down, no plan brings it back. I'd never upgrade in the middle of an outage hoping it fixes things. Wait until the app works normally, then decide whether slow mode bothers you enough to pay $9.99 a month.

Can I get a refund if an app I pay for goes down?

Don't count on it. Character AI only returns money where the law obliges it to, and App Store or Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google. Talkie AI and Janitor AI are similarly strict. Candy AI is one of the few with a short window: 24 hours after payment for non-EU/UK users. A polite request costs nothing, but I'd plan on no money back.

What is a good backup when Character AI is down?

It depends on what you want from it. For a companion with a real free plan, Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day and runs on web, iOS and Android. For a character hub, SpicyChat offers unlimited text chat on its Default model, with ads and possible waiting lines, and Janitor AI's free plan includes unlimited JLLM chats. Keep in mind that Character AI keeps things SFW, while these apps allow adult content.

Is SpicyChat down or just queued?

On the free plan, it may just be a queue. SpicyChat's free tier includes unlimited text chat with ads and possible waiting lines, so a slow start on a busy night doesn't mean the site is down. The Get a Taste plan at $5.95 a month skips the waiting lines.

My view: if the queue is your only issue and you chat often, that small plan is the cheapest fix on this page.
