How to make a group chat on Character AI, and what to plan
Can you make group chats in Character AI?
Yes. Group chat is one of the listed features of Character AI, the character app from Character Technologies, Inc., next to custom characters, voices and images. It is not marked as a paid extra, and the free plan promises unlimited messaging for all users.
So the short answer is good news: you can have several characters in one conversation without paying first.
Here is what the official pages confirm, so you know it going in:
- Group chat is listed as a feature, alongside custom characters
- The free plan runs on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with ads, slow mode and limited daily features
- The app is on web, iOS and Android
- The content policy allows no adult content, and a group is no exception
What the pages on file do not give is a tap-by-tap path with button names, or a cap on how many characters one room can hold. I won't invent menu names for you, because a wrong label wastes more of your time than no label. The app itself shows the way in once you know the feature exists, and the sections below cover what to decide before you open it.
My take: group chat is one of the best reasons to use Character AI at all. Of the six apps on this page, only SpicyChat also pairs group chat with open-ended free text chat. For big ensemble scenes, a tavern full of characters or a friendly debate between rivals, this is where I'd start.
The table right after this section shows which of the six apps list group chat, next to memory, voice and price, so you can see how rare it is.
One tidy-up tip while you experiment: group rooms pile up fast when you try different casts. My guide on cleaning up old Character AI conversations explains how to clear the ones you don't want.

How to make a group in Character AI: the part to plan first
The button is the easy bit. What decides whether a group chat is fun or chaotic is the cast you bring into it. Since Character AI lists custom characters as a feature too, you can build the members yourself instead of hoping community characters mix well.
Here is the order I'd work in, based on how the features fit together:
- Pick or create each character on its own first, and chat with it one-on-one so you know its voice
- Give every member a clearly different personality, goal or speaking style, so replies don't blur
- Keep the first group small; you can always add a character once the scene works
- Write a short opening message that sets the place and the situation for everyone
None of that needs a paid plan. It just needs a bit of patience at the start, which pays you back over a long story.
Does a group chat remember as well as a one-on-one?
This is my main caution. Character AI's memory is strong in parts and patchy in others. Other reviewers report that it digs up old facts well, yet sometimes adds a plausible detail that never happened, and that in long threads it can drop a promise made ten messages back. Add three or four characters to one thread and there is simply more to keep straight.
The paid plans help a little. c.ai+ ($9.99 a month) and (c.ai) lite ($4.99 a month) both come with 30 memory pins, so you can pin the facts the whole group should keep. My view: if group scenes become your main way of using the app, c.ai+ is the tier I'd pick, since it also removes slow mode, which matters more when several characters take turns replying.
If you only run a group now and then, stay free. Unlimited messaging covers casual ensemble scenes, and the ads and slow mode are the price of admission.
For the full picture of plans, memory pins and voices, my Character AI review with plans and features goes through each part. The feature matrix below lines group chat up against memory, voice and images across all six apps.

Which other apps let you run a group chat?
Group chat is rarer than you'd think. Of the six apps on this page, four list it in some form, and the details differ a lot. If Character AI's rules or memory don't suit your group scenes, these are the options on file:
- OurDream AI: group chat listed as a feature, with a policy that allows adult content and 55 Dreamcoins to start
- SpicyChat: group chat listed, and free text chat has no limit on the Default model, with ads and possible waiting lines
- Nomi AI: group chat on paid plans, and the Standard Plan allows as many as 10 active Nomis and 10 active group chats
- Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT: group chat is not on file, so I would not pick either for an ensemble
My pick for a Character AI fan who wants group scenes somewhere else is SpicyChat. The shape is similar: roleplay, custom characters, group chat and a free plan without a published message cap. The big difference is the content policy, which allows adult content, while Character AI's allows none.
Nomi AI is the more deliberate choice. It is built around companions with memory as a listed feature, and a group of Nomis you have each built up is a different experience from a room of strangers. The catch is that group chat sits on the paid side.
Standard Plan Monthly is $15.99, and Standard Plan Yearly comes to $8.33 a month. My move would be the free plan first, 50 messages a day, to decide whether you like the companions before you pay for the group feature.
OurDream AI sits between the two. Group chat is listed, the policy allows adult content and image and video generation come with a subscription. Its free start is a small coin balance rather than open-ended chat, which I explain in the next section.
What I would not do is choose Candy AI or GirlfriendGPT for this. They may be good one-on-one companions, but a feature that is not on file is not a feature I can promise you.
For a wider shortlist with prices and content levels, my ranking of Character AI alternatives for roleplay goes deeper. Right below, a short fact box covers OurDream AI.

What does a group chat cost outside Character AI?
On Character AI a group chat costs nothing to start, because messaging is unlimited on the free plan. Elsewhere, every extra voice in the room can burn through a coin balance faster, so do the sums before you move a big cast.
Take OurDream AI from the box above. You can sign up and browse at no cost, and the free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, with chat at 1 Dreamcoin a message. The help centre adds that it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so treat the number as one that can change.
At best that is 55 messages, gone fast in a busy group scene. Standard Monthly at $19.99 lifts that with unlimited messages, plus image and video generation and 1,000 dreamcoins every month. Standard Annual is $119.88, which is $9.99 a month.
My take: for group roleplay, a coin-per-message free start is a taste test, not a home. If the ensemble format is what you love, only move to OurDream AI once you are ready to pay for unlimited messages.
SpicyChat is the gentler switch on cost. Text chat stays unlimited on its free plan, and the first paid tier, Get a Taste ($5.95 a month), brings a memory manager and clears out both the ads and the waiting lines. For a group of characters that need to remember each other, the True Supporter tier at $19.95 adds 8K context and semantic memory 2.0.
Nomi AI's group chat needs Standard, so there the cost question is simply $15.99 monthly, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. For that you also get up to 10 active Nomis, so a whole cast of your own companions can share one room, and that is a real draw.
Now compare those with the $9.99 monthly c.ai+. On Character AI, paying is optional for groups: it buys memory pins, no slow mode and no ads. On most other apps, paying is how the group chat starts. That difference alone is why I'd keep Character AI as the first stop for group scenes that stay SFW.
If you run into a cancelling, billing or account question on any of these apps, my help guides for each app cover the common ones in plain steps.

Do you need c.ai+ to make a group chat?
No. Nothing on file puts group chat behind a paywall, and every user gets unlimited messaging on the free plan. What the free plan does have is ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. In a group scene, slow mode is the one you'll feel most, since each character's reply waits its turn.
My rule for choosing is simple. If you start a group once a week for fun, stay free and accept the pace. If you run long ensemble stories most evenings, paying $9.99 a month for c.ai+ is fair: no slow mode, no ads, unlimited premium chat styles and 30 memory pins. c.ai+ Annual is $94.99 (about $7.92 a month), but I'd only commit to a year once group chat has become a habit.
At $4.99, (c.ai) lite sits in between, with fewer ads and a daily allowance of premium chat styles, and I think it is a sensible trial step.
What happens if checkout fails?
A short note here, because it catches people off guard. In one outside review, two cards, one credit and one debit, kept failing at the c.ai+ payment step for three weeks, though both worked on ten rival sites. The only advice from support was to use another card.
If that happens to you, it is not your bank being strange, and there is no rush: nothing on file puts group chat behind the paywall, so your group scenes can carry on for free while you sort out the payment.
The same caution applies to cancelling. Renewal is automatic until you stop it, and a payment is only refunded where the law insists. If you paid on the web, the path runs Settings > Account > Manage and on to the Customer Portal; if you paid in a phone store, Apple or Google handle it.
I'd rather you keep the money than pay for a tier the group feature doesn't need. That is also how I weigh plans when scoring apps: a generous free feature earns credit, and a paywall on basics loses it. You can read more about how apps on this site are checked and rated.
How to make a Character AI group chat on mobile
Character AI runs on web, iOS and Android, and group chat is a listed feature of the app. The official pages on file don't spell out a separate mobile path, so I won't describe screens I can't point you to. If you can't spot group chat in the phone app, open the web version, which is listed as well, and look there before you give up.
A few mobile habits help a group scene run smoothly. Keep your own messages short, since several characters will reply after each one. Name the character you're speaking to when you want one of them to answer.
And if the thread gets long, start a fresh group with a one-line summary rather than scrolling back through a hundred replies on a small screen.
What can't a Character AI group chat do?
The content policy allows no adult content, on the free plan, on (c.ai) lite and on c.ai+. A group does not change that, and no member of the cast can. If your group story drifts past that line, the app will stop it, by design. Knowing that up front saves you from rebuilding a whole cast only to hit the same wall.
The other limit is memory. With several characters and a long thread, details slip. Memory pins on the paid plans help you keep the key facts steady, and so does a short recap at the top of a new group.
For the policy side in more depth, I cover it in a separate guide: does Character AI allow NSFW content? And if you use more than one character app, the rules differ from app to app: my guide on the PolyBuzz chat filter covers a similar question there.
My closing advice is simple. Start a small group on the free plan tonight, give each character a clear role and see how it flows. Two or three well-drawn characters beat six vague ones every time, and you can always invite another once the story has a shape worth joining.
Pay only if slow mode or memory truly gets in your way. Character AI gives you the room for free, so use it well.
Common questions
Can you make group chats in Character AI for free?
Yes. Group chat is a listed Character AI feature and is not marked as paid, and the free plan promises unlimited messaging for all users. The free plan does come with ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. If slow mode bothers you in group scenes, c.ai+ removes it for $9.99 a month.
How many characters can be in a Character AI group chat?
The official pages on file don't publish a number, so I can't give you one. My advice is to start with a small cast, two or three characters with clearly different personalities, and add more once the scene flows. A smaller group also keeps memory steadier, since there is less for the AI to track.
Does group chat work on the Character AI mobile app?
Character AI is available on web, iOS and Android, and group chat is a listed feature of the app. The records don't describe a separate mobile path, so if you don't see the option on your phone, try the web version of the app before assuming the feature is missing.
Can I use my own characters in a group chat?
Character AI lists custom characters as a feature alongside group chat, so building your own cast is part of the app. I'd create each character first and chat with it one-on-one, so you know how it sounds before it shares a room with others.
Which apps besides Character AI have group chat?
On file, OurDream AI and SpicyChat list group chat, and Nomi AI offers it on paid plans, with up to 10 active group chats on the Standard Plan. Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT have no group chat on file. For a free start similar to Character AI, I'd look at SpicyChat first.
Can a group chat on Character AI include adult content?
No. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content on any plan, and a group chat follows the same rules as a one-on-one. If you are an adult who wants group roleplay with adult content, OurDream AI and SpicyChat both list group chat and have policies that allow it.
