Emochi AI chat after six free weeks: kind, but never spicy
No-cost option: Free, supported by ads: 2 chat models, 2 pictures daily, 5 voice messages daily, 5 smart replies daily and 1 Exclusive Moment.
starts at $8.33/mo
What is Emochi, and who is it for?
Emochi is a character roleplay app from FlowGPT, launched in 2025, where you chat with community characters or build your own, on the web and on Android. I spent six weeks on it in spring 2025, on the free tier alone, and never paid a cent. My short take: it was the kindest app to my wallet in its lane, and the tamest.
What you should know before you start:
- A free plan exists, with 2 chat models, 2 images a day and ads.
- Unlimited messages are now listed as a paid perk, and the free message count is not published.
- The content level is soft: suggestive, never explicit.
- Voice comes as voice messages only, with no live calls listed.
- Plus starts at $9.99 a month.
So who is it for? Someone who loves slow, story-first roleplay, a big community library, and a free start that doesn't nag. Anyone hoping a romance will go all the way should look elsewhere. If that second group sounds like you, my SpicyChat review covers an app built with a different content rule in mind.

How far the free tier really goes
In spring 2025 the free text allowance was the most generous in its lane, and on a library technician's salary that matters. Emochi never once made me feel poor, a rarity I noted out loud to nobody.
Here is where then and now part ways. Today "Unlimited Messages" sits among the paid perks on the official subscription page, which means free messages have a cap, and the number is not published. The site title still says "Roleplay with unlimited AI Characters for free", which is about characters, not messages.
What the free plan does spell out: 2 chat models, a daily 5 voice messages plus 5 smart replies, 2 images a day, 1 Exclusive Moment, and ads.
My advice: treat my six free weeks as proof the free tier can carry a real story, but check your own ceiling in the first few days before you plan around it. For the quick facts, see the at-a-glance box; the dates of my six weeks follow in the test log. Should you prefer a free allowance counted to the coin, OurDream AI's free start lists 55 Dreamcoins at 1 per message.

Emochi AI chat character quality: the slow burn
The first thing I did was carry over a tea-shop keeper I had built on Moescape that winter and retune her voice. Portability is a love language, and I speak it fluently. Emochi names no import tool, so plan on retyping your character yourself. Free bios cap at 300 characters, which is enough for a sketch, not a novel.
The best part of my six weeks was deep in the community section. A slow-burn tea-shop roleplay ran for three weeks and out-plotted half the romance shelf I process at work, and it was written better than most of it too. That is the real case for Emochi: the community characters and the stories people build around them.
Memory is the part to watch. The plan page lists "Bot Context Memory", enhanced on paid plans, with up to 600 characters of "Enhance Bot Memory" on Plus. A separate "Extra Memory Span" store carries a warning that space is limited and older memories fade once it fills up.
Outside reviewers saw characters hold on to details for roughly 10-12 rounds, which is 20-24 messages. For a three-week story, that means you do some of the remembering yourself.
Voice is modest. You get voice messages, 5 a day on Free, and no live calls are listed. Other reviewers report the voice sounding monotonous and image generation serviceable, which fits an app where the writing does the heavy lifting.
My take: come for the community stories, keep your own notes on long plots, and don't expect the voice to carry anything. If you want the same kind of long plot with fewer limits on where it goes, my roundup of uncensored AI apps is the next stop.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
Emochi content rules: suggestive, and no further
Emochi's content level is soft. Romance and flirting are fine, and scenes stay suggestive. This was my main friction. Suggestive-only meant my slow burn could never land anywhere, and even my patience has a limit. Three weeks of build-up with no payoff is a lot of tea.
One detail is worth flagging. The entry notice warns of adult material made by AI on the site and asks you to confirm you are of legal age, with a self-declaration click-through and no ID check described. Yet the content policy itself is soft. Read that notice as a warning label, not a promise of a fuller mode.
Nothing on the plan page suggests paying changes the content level. Plus and Ultra buy more models, more memory, more quotas and no ads. They do not buy a different rule. If content level is your reason to upgrade, don't.
On the inclusive side, I like what the library offers. Free users can create characters, paid plans allow unlimited bots, and bios grow from 300 to 600 to 1000 characters across Free, Plus and Ultra. You can use the interface in English, Japanese or Korean.
Other reviewers found the creation tools minimal next to other platforms, and with a 300-character free bio I understand why. Still, you are not stuck with one default kind of companion: build who you want, or find her in the community section.
For a wider look at apps built around characters rather than one companion, see my guide to AI chat character apps. My take: Emochi is honest about being tame. Just believe it.
Who Emochi suits
Great for
- Readers who love long, slow roleplay and community-made characters
- Anyone on a tight budget who wants a real free start
- People who like to build their own character and bring her from app to app
- Anyone who wants flirty romance that stays suggestive
Skip if
- Anyone who wants a romance to go beyond suggestive
- People who want live voice calls, since only voice messages are listed
- Anyone who needs a published free message count before starting
- Readers who want a clear refund rule for web purchases
Plus or Ultra, if you pay at all
I never paid for Emochi. Six weeks on the free tier cost me $0, which is the best argument I can make for starting there. If you outgrow it, here is how I'd choose.
Plus is the sensible upgrade. At $9.99 a month it removes ads, unlocks unlimited messages and unlimited bots, adds 4 premium models, raises memory to 600 characters and multiplies your voice and image quotas by 5. That covers everything a story-first reader actually runs out of.
Ultra at $16.99 a month adds a monthly 2,000 Mochi, labelled "worth $20" on the page, plus 30% off Mochi top-ups and 2 flagship models with a free quota. My problem: Emochi doesn't publish what anything costs in Mochi. A "Use 10 Mochi" label exists, and that's all. I don't like buying a currency without a price list, so I'd skip Ultra until one appears.
On terms, a year of Plus is $99.99, so $8.33 monthly. Let one month of Plus prove you'll stay before you commit to that. And remember that no plan changes the content level.

Plus unlocks unlimited messages and no ads; Ultra adds 2,000 Mochi a month, but Emochi does not publish what each action costs in Mochi.
Is Emochi worth paying for?
For most readers, the free plan is enough for now. Six weeks of real roleplay cost me nothing, and today's free plan still gives you models, images, voice messages and characters to try before any money moves. Start there.
Plus earns its $9.99 when you hit the unpublished free message ceiling, or when the ads start to grate during a long story. For unlimited messages and better memory, I call that fair. I would not pay for Emochi to get a different kind of content, because no plan changes that.
Ultra is the one I'd hold back on. $16.99 a month for Mochi with no published per-action costs asks you to trust the math blind. The plan table on this page lays out every term side by side if you want to compare the quarterly and yearly prices yourself.
| Emochi option | Billed | Cost | Works out per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | monthly | $9.99 | $9.99 |
| Plus | quarterly | $26.99 | $9.00 |
| Plus | yearly | $99.99 | $8.33 |
| Ultra | monthly | $16.99 | $16.99 |
| Ultra | quarterly | $45.99 | $15.33 |
| Ultra | yearly | $169.99 | $14.17 |

The closest alternative I would suggest
Joi AI
starts at $13.99/mo, free plan on offer
Rating 5.8/10
The quotas are where Free, Plus and Ultra really differ, so here is the short version from the official plan page:
- Images: 2 a day on Free, 10 on Plus, 15x the free quota on Ultra.
- Voice messages: 5 a day on Free, 5x that on Plus, 15x on Ultra.
- Memory: standard on Free, enhanced with up to 600 characters on Plus.
- Character bios: 300 characters on Free, 600 on Plus, 1000 on Ultra.
- Models: 2 free chat models; Plus pairs the standard model with 4 premium ones; Ultra adds 2 flagship models.
My reading: the free image quota is small but honest, and 10 a day on Plus is plenty for illustrating a story. The bio jump from 300 to 600 characters matters more than it looks if you build detailed characters, because more room in the bio means more of her personality written down.
What bothers me is the Mochi layer on Ultra. Flagship models use your free quota first, then Mochi, and the page never says how many Mochi a message costs. If you like knowing your bill in advance, that is a real catch. For an app with a different pricing model to compare against, see my CrushOn AI review.
The good and bad of Emochi
What went well
- A free plan with 2 chat models, 2 images a day and 5 voice messages a day
- Free users can create their own characters
- A large community section with long-running roleplay
- Plus costs $9.99 a month and removes ads
- Interface in English, Japanese and Korean
What fell short
- The content level stays suggestive on every plan
- Emochi doesn't publish how many free messages you get
- Mochi costs per action are not published
- No refund policy found for web purchases
Cancelling, and where refunds go
I never subscribed, so I have no cancel story to tell. What follows is what Emochi's own pages say, and the route changes with where you paid.
For a browser purchase, checkout promises a monthly subscription you can cancel whenever you like, and there's a "Cancel your subscription" button in the web app, followed by a confirmation step. If you subscribed inside the app, Emochi sends you back there and tells you to change or cancel the plan in the app itself. So cancel wherever you started, not somewhere else.
Refunds are where Emochi gets vague. Under the Terms, refunds for purchases made in the apps are entirely up to the store you bought through. For web purchases, paid by card, no refund policy was found at all. That doesn't mean a refund is impossible, but I wouldn't bank on it. So buy one month of Plus, not a year, until you know you'll stay.
Billing discretion is an open question too, because Emochi's statement name isn't on file and I won't guess what your bank will print. According to the Terms, Apple's App Store or Google Play does the in-app billing, so an in-app purchase is handled by the store you bought it in.
You can pay by card, through Apple in-app purchase or through Google Play. If you want to line up billing rules app by app, my full index of app reviews walks through every cancel path and refund policy.
What happens to your chats
Emochi's privacy policy is plain about training: it lists two uses for your data, running the service for you and training models that make the service better. So yes, chats can go into model training. I don't love that, especially for long personal roleplay, and I'd keep real names and details out of the story.
Retention is vague. What you upload sits on Emochi's servers, and the policy promises you can delete it whenever you want. CCPA deletion requests get dealt with "as soon as possible", though some exceptions apply. No fixed retention period is stated.
I like the right to delete, and I dislike that there is no clock on how long anything stays if you don't ask.
My advice for a story you love: keep your own copy of the character sheet and the plot notes. That also makes it easy to carry her to another app, which I clearly believe in.
Is Emochi legit?
Yes, with a naming tangle. The company behind it is FlowGPT. The Terms name "Emochi, Co." at 385 14th Street, Oakland, CA 94612, the privacy policy names "FlowGPT, Cp.", and the Google Play developer is "Flowgpt Co." Three spellings of one owner is untidy, but the address and developer listing are real and public.
It is a new app, launched in 2025, so it has less of a track record than older rivals. The age gate is a self-declaration. None of this worries me for a free account. It would make me cautious about paying for a year upfront.
If you're weighing it against a similar character app, my Emochi vs PolyBuzz comparison is the place to start.
Final word on Emochi
Final score
6.3/10
OkayEmochi is the free-tier champion for story roleplay, with a community that writes better than most novels, as long as suggestive is enough for you.
Used hands-on with the free plan
- A slow-burn community roleplay out-plotted half the romance shelf, even if it could never go further.
- Enhanced memory is a paid perk; reviewers saw details fade after a dozen or so rounds.
- I carried a character over from another app and retuned her voice without trouble.
- A couple of free images a day and voice messages, but no calls.
- The most generous free text allowance in its lane; it never once made me feel poor.
- The operator name shifts between documents and the terms set a lower age floor than the web gate does.
- Active and updated, though a lookalike iOS app and shifting company names muddy the picture.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: Emochi is worth it for readers who want slow, story-first roleplay on a free tier, and a skip if you want a romance that ever gets past suggestive.
If I paid at all, it would be one month of Plus at $9.99, and only once you hit the free message ceiling or tire of ads. I'd leave Ultra alone until Mochi costs are published. What bothers me most is the content ceiling: my three-week slow burn could never land, and no plan changes that.
Close behind is the missing refund policy for web purchases. Skip Emochi if you want live voice calls, a published free message count, or a companion app with an adult content setting.

Better fits, depending on what you want
Emochi does community roleplay on a budget well. When what you miss is something else, these are the apps I would open next, judged by their own plans and policies:
- Adult content with a coin start: OurDream AI allows it, and its plan page gives new accounts 55 Dreamcoins at 1 Dreamcoin per message, though its help centre says free dreamcoins aren't currently offered.
- A free allowance you can count: Nomi AI promises 50 messages every day on its permanent free plan, each up to 400 characters, ad-free.
- A polished companion you pay for: Candy AI opens adult content to paying members, and its monthly plan at €13.99 includes unlimited text.
- Plenty of messages on a small budget: GirlfriendGPT's Premium tier costs $15 a month and allows 5,000 messages.
My take on these: Nomi AI is the gentlest switch if you liked Emochi's free start and want memory with numbers attached. OurDream AI is the switch if the content ceiling is what drove you out. Candy AI is for when you are ready to pay from day one.
Every one of them has a catch of its own, so read the refund terms first. For the way plans, policies and my own notes get weighed on this site, see how I check the apps.

OurDream AI

Rating 6.8/10
Nomi AI

Those three cards are for an Emochi reader who wants what Emochi won't give. Candy AI fits a paid companion with adult content from the first month. OurDream AI suits someone after adult content with a coin-based start and a Standard plan at $19.99.
Nomi AI, with its 50 free messages every day, comes closest to the budget-friendly start I liked here. Choose by what you missed most, whether that was content level, memory or a clear free allowance, and look at its refund rule before paying. Treat each one as a different trade-off, not a straight upgrade.
Emochi questions, answered
Is Emochi free?
Yes. Emochi's free plan comes with 2 chat models, 5 voice messages daily, 5 smart replies daily, 2 images a day, 1 Exclusive Moment and ads. Unlimited messages sit on the paid side, and Emochi gives no number for free ones.
In spring 2025 I used the free tier alone for six weeks and found its text allowance the most generous in its lane.
How much does Emochi cost?
Plus costs $9.99 monthly, $26.99 quarterly or $99.99 yearly. Ultra costs $16.99 monthly, $45.99 quarterly or $169.99 yearly, and includes 2,000 Mochi a month. Per-action Mochi costs are not published, so I would start with one month of Plus if the free plan runs out.
Does Emochi allow NSFW content?
No. Emochi's content level is soft, so scenes stay suggestive, and nothing on the plan page suggests paying changes that. The entry notice mentions adult content and asks for a self-declared confirmation of legal age, but the policy itself stays tame. That ceiling was my main frustration in six weeks: a long slow-burn story had nowhere to go.
Can I bring my own character to Emochi?
I brought over a tea-shop keeper I had built on another app and retuned her voice, but Emochi names no import tool, so expect to retype her. Free users can create characters with a bio of up to 300 characters. Plus raises that to 600 and allows unlimited bots, and Ultra allows 1000 characters.
How do I cancel Emochi?
On the web, use the "Cancel your subscription" action in the web app and confirm. If you subscribed in the app, Emochi wants you to cancel from inside the app. The store you paid through decides on refunds for app purchases, and no refund policy was found for web purchases.
Does Emochi use my chats for training?
It can. Emochi's privacy policy lists model training, to make its services better, among the things your data is for. Uploaded content is stored, you can delete it at any time, and no fixed retention period is stated. I'd keep personal details out of your roleplay and save a copy of every character you're fond of.
