How to know if Character AI banned you, and what to do

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

How do I know if Character AI banned me?

Honest starting point: Character AI's official pages on file do not describe what a ban looks like, how one is announced or whether you get a message explaining it. So I can't hand you a neat "this screen means banned" checklist, and I won't make one up. What I can do is help you rule out the far more ordinary reasons an account stops behaving, because a lot of apparent lockouts turn out to be something else entirely.

Work through these before you conclude anything:

  • Slow replies: the free plan uses slow mode at high load, which slows responses without anything being wrong with your account
  • Features running out: the free plan comes with limited daily features, and (c.ai) lite caps premium chat styles per day
  • Login trouble: sign in with the same method and email address you used to create the account
  • Payment trouble: other reviewers report cards declined at c.ai+ checkout, which is a billing problem, not a ban
  • Your inbox: look for any message from Character AI, including the spam folder

If all of that checks out and you still cannot get in, or you see a notice about your account rather than a general error, a restriction becomes the likelier explanation. At that point, contacting support is the sensible next step. I would not open a fresh account to get around it, because dodging a restriction is a rules problem of its own.

My take: don't panic on the first odd error. Rule the ordinary things out calmly before you assume the worst.

If you still have access and simply want to tidy up before stepping away, my guide on removing your Character AI chats covers that. The table right after this section lines Character AI up against the companion apps I cover, which helps if you are weighing a move.

How do you know if you got banned on Character AI, or just hit a limit?

This is the mix-up I'd bet on first. Character AI is free and unlimited for messaging, but the free plan is not free of friction, and friction can feel a lot like being blocked. The plans themselves spell out where the limits sit:

  • Free plan: unlimited messaging, with full ads, slow mode and limited daily features
  • (c.ai) lite, $4.99 monthly: fewer ads, plus some premium chat-style messages every day
  • c.ai+, $9.99 monthly: slow mode gone, and the top daily limits
  • Every plan: no adult content, so a reply that refuses or changes course is the policy working, not a ban

So if replies crawl in the evening, or a premium chat style stops being available until tomorrow, that is the plan doing what it says. If a character steers away from a scene, that is the content policy. Neither of those says anything about your account standing.

I actually like that the limits are written down. It makes it much easier to separate "the app is busy" from "the app has a problem with me."

Why would Character AI ban an account in the first place?

The records do not list ban reasons, so I can only tell you what the rules on file make obvious. Character AI allows no adult content on any plan, free or paid. Trying to force a character past that, or hunting for ways around the filter, breaks the terms and is the kind of behaviour that can get an account banned on any app with rules like these.

Beyond that, I won't guess at a list of offences the company has not published. What I would say is that a strict content policy plus an account that keeps pushing against it is the pattern most worth avoiding, and it is completely in your control.

If you want a fuller picture of how the app works day to day, including plans, memory and privacy, read my Character AI review with its content rules explained. What happens to your c.ai+ subscription if you are banned?

This is where a possible ban can cost real money, so it deserves its own section. The records do not say whether a restricted account keeps being billed. What they do say is blunt: the terms let Character.AI charge your card automatically at every agreed renewal, and that only stops when you cancel.

A ban is not listed as a way to cancel. So I would assume the charges continue until you stop them yourself.

Here is how the billing side breaks down, based on where you paid:

  • Web subscriptions run through Stripe; the help centre sends you from Settings > Account > Manage to the Customer Portal, where you enter your account email
  • App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google, so start with the store you paid through
  • Refunds happen only where the law requires one
  • The annual plan at $94.99 is the biggest amount at stake, so sort it out first if you have one

The catch with the web route is obvious: it starts inside the account settings. If you cannot get in at all, the records do not describe another way to reach the Customer Portal, so writing to support about the subscription is the next step. Mention your account email and the plan you are on, and ask plainly for the renewal to be stopped.

In my view, people forget this side of a ban until the next charge lands. Sort the money out first, then worry about the account.

One more detail matters if you are on the annual plan. The pricing page shows it at $94.99 a year against a crossed-out $119.88, which is a good deal when things go well and a big sum to strand when they don't. Since a payment only comes back where a law says it must, the sooner you stop the next renewal, the less there is to sort out later.

If this has soured you on Character AI and you would rather move on than wait, other apps are worth a look, each with its own rules and prices. My ranked list of Character AI alternatives sorts them by what they do better and what they cost.

How to contact Character AI about a possible ban

The box above shows a very different app. Back to Character AI: if you have ruled out slow mode, limits, login trouble and outages, it is time to ask the company directly. The records show that Character AI runs a help centre with articles on subscriptions and account deletion, and c.ai+ includes premium support.

They do not list a specific contact form or email address, so I won't invent one. Start from the official help centre and use whatever route it offers.

What you write matters more than where you write it. A short, calm message gets further than a long, angry one. I'd include the email address on the account, the platform you use (web, iOS or Android), what you see when you try to get in, and roughly when it started. If you pay for a plan, say which one. Keep it factual and leave out guesses about why it happened.

What I would not do is argue the rules in that first message. You don't know yet whether there is a restriction at all, and support can only help with what you describe. Ask two simple questions: is the account restricted, and if so, what are the next steps?

It also helps to write from the same email address that is on the account. That one detail lets support match your message to the right account without back-and-forth, and it shows the account is yours without you having to prove anything else.

Expect to wait. The records say nothing about response times or an appeal process, so I can't promise you either. Other reviewers report a support exchange over a declined card that only suggested trying a different card, which tells me not to expect detailed answers. Be patient, and keep a copy of what you sent.

In the meantime, don't create new accounts to keep chatting. If the company has restricted you, a second account looks like dodging that decision, and it will not help your case.

For plain guides on other apps, from billing to deleting data, my help pages for companion apps collect them in one place. If you end up moving on, reading the cancel and refund rules of your next app before paying is the one habit I'd urge on anyone.

What about your chats and data if you are locked out?

A possible ban raises a second worry: what happens to everything you wrote? The records answer part of it. Character AI says it keeps some of the data you share with it to train and improve its AI models. That applies whether your account is active, restricted or gone, as far as the policy wording goes.

In the EEA and UK you can say no to training, but that switch sits inside the account settings, which does not help much if you cannot get in.

Deleting the account is described as "permanent and cannot be reversed." On the web it sits under Profile > Profile Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Delete Account. On mobile it's under Profile > Settings icon > Remove Account. Again, both paths start inside the account.

If you are locked out and want your data removed, that is another question to put to support.

My honest view: this is a good reminder to keep personal details out of character chats in the first place. What you never typed is the one thing no lockout can touch.

How I judge an app's rules and account policies

Clear rules are one of the things I value most in a companion app, and account standing is part of that. The best case is an app that publishes what it bans, how it tells you and how you can appeal. Character AI publishes its content level clearly, no adult content on any plan, but not the rest, and that costs it a little in my eyes.

I don't think that makes Character AI unfair. It makes it opaque on one topic that matters a lot when it happens to you. An app that says "here is what gets an account restricted, and here is how to ask for a review" earns more trust than one that leaves people guessing.

If you'd like to see the full method behind my ratings, including how billing clarity and policy wording count, my notes on how I read app records lay it out. The short version: a rule you can read beats a rule you have to guess.

How to keep your Character AI account in good standing

Prevention is dull, but it works. Since the records do not list ban reasons, I'd stick to the rules that are on file and the obvious habits that follow from them. Character AI allows no adult content on any plan.

If a character refuses or steers away, take the hint and take the story somewhere else rather than rephrasing the same request over and over.

Keep one account, sign in the same way every time, and keep the email address on it working. If there is ever a problem, that email is how you prove the account is yours. And if you pay, keep your receipts, whether they come from Stripe, Apple or Google.

None of this is exciting. It just means that if something does go wrong, you are the easy case for support to help.

It also helps to know what the paid plans do and don't change. (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ add memory pins, fewer or no ads and more premium chat styles, but the content rules are the same for everyone. Paying does not buy extra room under the policy, so a subscription is never protection against a restriction.

Where to go if Character AI's rules don't fit you

Sometimes the honest answer to "was I banned?" is a different question: is this the right app for what I want? If your stories keep bumping into the content policy, you will be happier on an app whose rules already allow them than fighting a filter that will not move. Evading a policy breaks the terms and can get an account banned, and no subscription changes that.

Among the apps on this page, SpicyChat, Nomi AI and OurDream AI list adult content as allowed, while Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT keep it on paid plans. SpicyChat and Nomi AI also have free plans, so you can see whether one fits before paying anything. If you do move, read the new app's cancel and refund rules before you pay, so a surprise charge never catches you out twice.

For the policy side in detail, my page on whether Character AI will allow NSFW explains where the rules stand and why paying does not change them.

Common questions

How do I know if Character AI banned me?

Character AI does not publish what a ban looks like, so start by ruling out ordinary causes. The free plan has slow mode at high load and limited daily features, and (c.ai) lite gives only so many premium chat styles each day. Check your login method, your email and whether the service is failing for everyone. If none of that explains it, contact support.

How do you know if you got banned on Character AI or if it is just slow?

Slow replies on the free plan are normal at busy times, because slow mode kicks in at high load. That affects speed, not your account. A character refusing a scene is the content policy, which allows no adult content on any plan. Only a lasting failure to get in, or a notice about your account, points to a restriction.

Will I still be charged for c.ai+ if my account is banned?

Nothing on file says a ban stops billing. Character AI charges your payment method on each renewal until you cancel, and a refund is due only where the law says so. Web subscribers cancel through the Customer Portal via Settings > Account > Manage; App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google. If you cannot log in, ask support to stop the renewal.

Can I appeal a Character AI ban?

No appeal process is described in the records, so I can't tell you how one works or how long it takes. The practical step is to contact support through the official help centre with your account email, your platform and what you see when you try to sign in, and ask whether the account is restricted.

Should I just make a new Character AI account?

I wouldn't. If your account has been restricted, a second account looks like dodging that decision and breaks the spirit of the rules. It also leaves any running c.ai+ plan on the old account. Sort out billing and ask support first. If the rules are the problem, choose an app whose policy fits you instead.
