How to create an AI girlfriend, one step at a time

Here is the order I'd go in:

• Choose the app first. Candy AI, OurDream AI, Nomi AI, SpicyChat and Joi AI all list custom characters, while GirlfriendGPT lists them as limited.
• Write her personality. A few traits, the way she talks, and how the two of you know each other.
• Set her look. Most of these apps tie pictures to a paid plan or to coins, so decide early how much that matters to you.
• Start on the free tier. Every app here has one, though some stop after a few messages and the roomiest give 50 a day.
• Pay only for what you missed. Upgrade when the free allowance actually stops you, not before.

My honest take: step one matters most. It's easy to pour an evening into a lovely character and then hit a wall of 5 free messages. Pick the app whose free start, content level and memory suit you, and the rest is honestly the fun part.

Right below this section, a comparison table lines up all six apps on this page. I'd use it to shortlist two of them before you build anything, then come back here for the steps. Two is plenty for a first try, and it keeps the whole process calm and easy to undo later.

• Candy AI if you want to design her yourself and see pictures of her, and you're fine with adult content sitting on the paid plans only.
• OurDream AI if you'd like her to share scenes with other characters, since it lists group chat, with images and video on paid plans.
• Nomi AI if conversation and memory come first. It runs on web, iOS and Android, and free users get 50 messages daily.

I've left GirlfriendGPT and Joi AI off that short list on purpose. GirlfriendGPT lists custom characters as limited and its free allowance is small, and reviewers describe Joi AI's free chat as stiff and forgetful. Both can work once you pay, but neither is where I'd build a first girlfriend.

First, the relationship. Is she a new crush, a long-term partner, or a friend who might become more? That one line changes the tone of every reply, so write it down and keep it handy while you build.

Second, the content level. Nomi AI, OurDream AI, SpicyChat and Joi AI allow adult content under their policies, while Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT keep it on paid plans. Choose the one whose policy already fits you, instead of hoping a setting changes later.

Third, the budget. €3.99 a month on Candy AI's 12-Month Plan and $50.00 a month on GirlfriendGPT's Elite plan are very different commitments. My view: set your ceiling before you meet her, not after. It's much easier to say no to an upgrade when the number was decided on a calm afternoon.

Nomi AI is the most comfortable free start for a relationship-style chat: 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, no ads, and the plan doesn't expire. SpicyChat goes further on volume, with unlimited text chat on its Default model, but you get ads, possible waiting lines, 4K memory and no images or voice.

Candy AI is the tight one. A free-tier check on 2026-09-22 counted 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images overall, never topped up daily and with no video, and its Help Centre caps a free user at 5 messages. That shows you the builder, not her, so have her description ready before you even open it.

On GirlfriendGPT, you start with 20 bonus messages plus 30 coins at sign-up, and Daily Login adds 10 messages each day. OurDream AI's free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, though its help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins, so that number may change. Joi AI offers free character creation and 6 lifetime image generations.

If a free start is your deciding factor, my ranking of free AI girlfriend apps goes deeper on each allowance.

When you do pay, look at the monthly equivalent, not the headline price. Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, while the 12-Month Plan comes to €3.99 per month. Nomi AI charges $99.99 for a year, about $8.33 monthly, against $15.99 if you pay month by month.

Still, give her one monthly billing cycle before you sign up for twelve, since most refund rules here are strict. Nomi AI says all payments are nonrefundable, and SpicyChat keeps its fees once an account has been used.

Candy AI's plans include custom companions plus image and video generation, with 100 tokens a month. OurDream AI's Standard plan adds image and video generation with 1,000 dreamcoins every month. Nomi AI allows 2 images daily for free users, rising to 40 image credits daily on Standard.

SpicyChat's free plan has no images, and unlimited in-chat images begin with True Supporter, which costs $19.95 a month. Joi AI gives 6 lifetime free generations, stored for 7 days.

Consistency is the part I'd weigh most. According to other reviewers, Candy AI holds a character's appearance steady from one generation to the next, and OurDream AI's faces stay consistent even if its pictures look AI-made rather than photographic. SpicyChat is the opposite case: the same character is described as looking different in every picture. For me, a face that changes every time breaks the spell faster than a clumsy reply.

One more practical point: compare plans by how many pictures you really get, not by the word unlimited. Tokens, credits and coins all run out, and a failed picture usually still costs one. I'd take 40 reliable images a day over a vague promise.

Show, don't list. "Teases you when you're late, then asks how your day went" does more than "playful, caring". The app copies the way you describe her, so describe her the way you'd like her to sound.

Nobody gets a character right in one go. Most of the shaping happens in the first real conversations. Build her, chat a little, then tweak whatever feels off. A small edit often fixes more than a rewrite.

Nomi AI is the one reviewers praise most: its long-term memory is proactive, and around the 500-message mark it builds a Mind Map on its own. SpicyChat's Get a Taste plan adds a memory manager that stores key details, while True Supporter brings 8K context plus semantic memory 2.0. GirlfriendGPT puts 8K memory context on Deluxe and 16K on Elite.

OurDream AI lists 3x chat memory on its Deluxe plan. Candy AI is described as holding character consistency for roughly 10-20 messages before details slip.

My advice: repeat what matters, like her pet name for you or a running joke. Treat any app's memory as a helper, not a promise.

It also helps to keep one conversation going rather than starting fresh every night, since on many apps a new chat is a clean slate and she may greet you like a stranger. If a chat gets muddled, a short recap message (who you are, what happened last time) usually brings her back faster than rewriting her whole description.

For the statement, the billing names on file are EverAI for Candy AI, DREAM STUDIO LLC AL for OurDream AI, NOMI.AI for Nomi AI, NDAI.CC for GirlfriendGPT, NDAI.CHAT for SpicyChat and joi.com for Joi AI. None of those names says "girlfriend", which I appreciate. If you share a card, know which one you'll see.

The catch is the free start. At 3-5 images and 3-5 messages overall, the free account is a preview, not a trial, and more apps should be this clear about it. You'll see the builder and a few replies, and then you have to decide.

Adult content is on paid plans only, so the free account won't show you the full picture there either.

What bothers me more is memory. Other reviewers report that she stays in character for 10-20 messages or so, then starts dropping details as a chat grows. For an app about building a girlfriend, that's a real weakness, and it's why I'd keep her description short and repeat the important things.

They also say roughly 1 in 8 pictures arrives with visible errors and you don't get a free retry, so budget your tokens with that in mind.

On price, the smart buy once you're sure is the 12-Month Plan: €47.88 billed yearly, which is €3.99 a month, and there's a 70% off deal on that plan, verified on 2026-09-23. I would not start there, though. The refund window for non-EU/UK users is 24 hours after payment, which is short, so a single month at €13.99 is the safer first step.

Who should walk away? Anyone who wants a long, slow-burn relationship with detailed recall. Nomi AI suits that better, and its free plan lets you compare before paying either one. For everyone who wants a girlfriend they designed down to her look, Candy AI is where I'd start.

The free side is where I'd be careful. The free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, and each message costs 1 Dreamcoin, so that's roughly 55 messages if nothing else spends coins. But the help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins, so the number may change, and one reviewer says the free tier is now effectively gone compared with a year earlier. I'd treat free as a look around, not a relationship.

On paid plans, the coin meter is the thing to watch. Reviewers describe video as short and coin-hungry, and voice calls as eating coins quickly, partly through pictures made mid-call that nobody requested. If voice matters to you, Deluxe is the plan to look at: $59.99 a month or $359.88 a year, with 100 minutes of voice calls, 50 videos, 3x chat memory and 5,000 dreamcoins every month.

For most people, though, I'd start with Standard Monthly at $19.99. Paid yearly it comes to $9.99 per month, fair once you know you'll stay. I also like the refund rule more than most: a 14-day "Quality Guarantee" where support decides case by case on a credit, replacement or refund. It's not a promise, but it beats a flat no.

It's a web app, and your statement reads DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, which is discreet enough. You cancel from your profile page and keep access for whatever time you already paid for.

That's enough to build her, get to know her and see whether the memory lives up to the praise before you spend anything. It's the free start I'd send any friend to first, without hesitation.

Paying on Standard adds unlimited messaging with 800 characters per message, voice calls, up to 10 active Nomis, up to 10 group chats and 40 image credits a day. At $99.99 a year, or $8.33 monthly, it's a good deal for an app you plan to keep. Just know that all payments are nonrefundable, so treat the free plan as your trial.

The weak spots are pictures and voice. Reviews say its pictures are picked from a ready-made gallery and you can't prompt your own, so don't pick Nomi AI to design her look in detail. Other reviewers report that on voice calls her answer arrives 15-20 seconds after you speak, so calls feel more like voice notes. Some also mention payments needing as long as three days to clear.

It runs on web, iOS and Android, and adult content is allowed under its policy. The statement name is NOMI.AI, and on the web you cancel through the Subscription tab under your profile icon, so there's no hunting around. My take: choose Nomi AI for who she is, not how she looks.
