Does Character AI harm the environment? What is on file

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Is there an official number for Character AI's footprint?

Short version: nobody can give you one from the facts on file, and I would be wary of anyone who claims a precise figure. Character Technologies, Inc., the company behind Character AI, has published nothing in my records about energy, carbon or water. So the honest answer to "does Character AI harm the environment" is this: some impact is certain, because every AI reply is produced on a server, but the size of it is unknown.

Here is what the records do and do not hold:

  • On file: the app runs on web, iOS and Android, and the free plan offers unlimited messaging
  • On file: free chat can drop into slow mode at high load
  • Not on file: energy per message, data centre locations or power sources
  • Not on file: any water, carbon or sustainability report
  • Not on file: how many people chat at once, which would set the scale

My take is simple. An app built around unlimited free chat runs a lot of computing, and the company has not said how much. That silence is not proof of harm, but it is not reassurance either. I would like to see Character AI publish something, even a rough yearly figure.

What you can control is your own share. Every message, every re-roll and every generated picture asks a server to do work, and saved conversations take up server space as well. If you would rather keep less history around, my guide on clearing out your Character AI chats walks through the documented route. It will not change the planet on its own, but it is a tidy habit.

The table right after this text, The apps side by side, sets Character AI beside the rest of the apps covered here. None of them publishes an environmental figure either, so read it for features and plans, not for green credentials.

What does Character AI do, and where does the computing happen?

What does Character AI do? It is a character hub built for companion chat and roleplay: you talk to characters, make your own, and can join group chats. On top of text, the records list voice calls and images, with video as a paid feature.

Each of those is a separate kind of work for the servers behind the app, and none of it happens on your phone alone.

Here is my rough ranking of the lighter and heavier parts. It rests on how AI apps work in general, not on any Character AI figure:

  • Scrolling back through an old chat: light, since it is stored text
  • Sending a text message: one reply has to be generated
  • Group chat: several characters may answer, so more replies per turn
  • Voice calls: speech on top of the text
  • Video, on paid plans only: the heaviest ask I would expect here

I want to be clear that this is my reasoning, not a measurement. Character AI has not published energy use per feature, and I would not put a number on any line of that list.

What model does Character AI use, and does it matter here?

The free plan runs on chat styles named PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, according to the plan details on file. Paid plans add premium chat styles: (c.ai) lite gives a daily allowance of them, and c.ai+ makes them unlimited. So what LLM does Character AI use?

The records do not say what sits under those names: how big the model is, who trained it, or what hardware runs it.

That gap matters for the environment question. Model size and hardware are the two things that would decide the energy cost of a single reply. Without them, any figure you see online for Character AI is a guess dressed up as a fact.

My advice is to treat such numbers with a raised eyebrow unless they come from the company itself.

Does Character AI have a message limit, and does "unlimited" add up?

Does Character AI have a message limit? Not on the free plan, going by the official wording. The c.ai+ FAQ promises that messaging stays "free and unlimited" for every user, and no daily cap is published. The catch is speed, not count: at high load, free chat drops into slow mode.

To me, slow mode is the most revealing fact on this page. It shows that the servers have limits, and that the company rations capacity by making free chat wait rather than by cutting it off. When capacity is tight, somebody pays for it: in speed on the free plan, or in money on the paid ones.

Here is how the plans differ on the things that decide how much you can ask of those servers:

  • Free: unlimited messaging, full ads, slow mode at high load, limited daily features
  • (c.ai) lite, $4.99 monthly: some premium chat-style messages each day, and fewer ads
  • c.ai+, $9.99 monthly: premium chat styles without a cap, no slow mode, the highest daily limits
  • c.ai+ Annual at $94.99 a year: the same benefits, billed yearly

My view: unlimited messaging is generous, and I would not want it taken away. But it also means nothing in the app nudges you to stop. There is no counter ticking down, so a long evening of re-rolls costs you nothing you can see. If you care about your footprint, that is the one habit worth watching.

Other apps handle this differently. OurDream AI, in the box below, lists 55 Dreamcoins to start and 1 Dreamcoin per message for people without a subscription, though its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so that starting number may change. I am not a fan of coin meters for money reasons, but they do make every message feel counted, which works as a natural brake.

Nomi AI's free plan stops at 50 messages a day, then you wait for the next day. For a look at the limits other apps set, my list of apps like Character AI lays them out side by side.

Does Character AI cost money, and does paying change your footprint?

Does Character AI cost money? No, not to start: the free plan offers unlimited messaging with ads. Paying is optional: (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 monthly, and c.ai+ is $9.99 monthly or $94.99 for a year. The billing note higher up covers renewal and refunds, so I will stay on the footprint side here.

Here is the part people rarely say out loud. Paying does not make your chats greener. If anything, the paid plans remove the brakes: no slow mode, the highest daily limits and unlimited premium chat styles.

Premium chat styles may well run on bigger models than the free ones, but the records do not say so, and I will leave it as an open question rather than a claim. What is clear is that a paid plan lets you ask more of the servers, and faster.

Why does Character AI have ads now? The records only say that the free plan shows full ads, (c.ai) lite shows fewer, and c.ai+ shows none. They do not say when the ads started or why. My reading is the obvious one: ads help pay for free, unlimited chat.

Ads carry a footprint of their own, since they load like any other content, but I would guess it is small next to generating replies, and I would not pick a plan for that reason.

So how should you weigh money and footprint together? My honest view is that the plan you choose matters much less than how you use it. A free account used for hours of re-rolls asks more of the servers than a paid account used for a short chat each evening.

If you are paying mainly to skip slow mode, that is a comfort choice, and a fair one. Just know it does not come with any green bonus.

One more point on value. The refund rule is strict: paid money stays paid, with only legal requirements as the exception. So if the footprint question is part of why you are unsure about the app, start free and decide later, once you know how much you really chat.

How can you use Character AI more lightly?

If the question behind your search is "should I feel bad about this", my answer is no, and it is also not nothing. You cannot change how Character AI runs its servers. You can change how much you ask of them.

None of the habits below come from a Character AI figure; they come from the plain logic that fewer generated replies mean less work somewhere.

Start with re-rolls. Asking for a fresh reply again and again is the quickest way to multiply your share without noticing, because each one is a whole new reply. If a character keeps missing the point, a clearer message usually beats five re-rolls. Group chats deserve a thought too: several characters answering one message means several replies.

Then think about the heavier features. Voice calls and video, which is paid, ask more than text. I am not telling you to skip them, since they are part of what you pay for. I would just save them for moments when they add something, not leave them running as background noise.

Why does Character AI forget, and does repeating yourself add up?

Why does Character AI forget? Other reviewers report long chats turning messy, and the AI now and then dropping a promise from just ten messages back, Auto Memories feature or not. The records also list 30 memory pins on (c.ai) lite and c.ai+.

When a character forgets, most people repeat themselves or re-roll, and each of those is extra work for the servers.

This is where pins help twice. Pinning the details that matter means fewer corrections, which saves you time and trims your share of the computing. On the free plan, opening each new chat with a brief recap of the key facts does a similar job.

A word on where these points come from. My page on how I check the apps explains that I only state what official pages publish or what other reviewers report. That is why this guide says "unknown" so often: Character AI has published no environmental figure, so the honest version of this page is partly a list of gaps. I would rather hand you that than a confident number with nothing behind it.

Is Character AI worse for the planet than other companion apps?

There is no fair way to rank them, because none of the apps on this page publishes an environmental figure. What I can compare is what each app asks its servers to make. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content on any plan, and my piece on whether Character AI will allow NSFW covers where that stands.

Several rivals lean harder on media. For €13.99, Candy AI's 1-Month Plan covers images and video. OurDream AI's $19.99 Standard Monthly plan lets you generate pictures and video, and its Deluxe Annual plan lists 50 videos. SpicyChat's True Supporter plan at $19.95 includes unlimited in-chat images.

My take: an app whose paid plans sell media generation is probably asking more of its servers per person than a mostly text app. That is my inference, not a published fact. Character AI lists images and voice calls too, with video on paid plans, so it is not a text-only app either. The honest ranking today is "unknown", and I would not choose between these apps on green grounds.

What would I want Character AI to publish?

Where does Character AI get its data, and how many users does Character AI have? Both questions sit right next to this one, and neither answer is in the records. The same goes for the facts that would settle the environment question for good.

If Character Technologies, Inc. wants people to take its footprint seriously, my wish list is short. I would want a yearly energy figure, or energy per million messages. I would want to know where its data centres are and what powers them, and whether any water goes into cooling.

And I would want to know whether free and paid chat styles run on different hardware, since that would tell paying members what their money buys.

None of that is an unusual request. Until something like it exists, the best you can do is use the app in a way you feel good about and ignore precise numbers from people who do not have them. I would still start free, keep re-rolls modest, and come back to this question if the company ever publishes a report.

Common questions

Does Character AI harm the environment?

Some impact is certain, because every reply is generated on a server, but its size is unknown. Character Technologies, Inc. has published no energy, carbon or water figures in the records this site relies on. Anyone quoting a precise number for Character AI is guessing unless the company itself published it.

What AI does Character AI use?

The free plan runs on chat styles named PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, and paid plans add premium chat styles. The records do not say how large the models behind those names are or what hardware runs them, which is exactly the information an energy estimate would need.

Is c.ai+ better or worse for the environment than the free plan?

Neither is shown to be greener. For $9.99 monthly, c.ai+ ends slow mode, sets the highest daily limits and unlimited premium chat styles, so it lets you ask more of the servers. How much you chat and re-roll matters more than which plan you are on.

Why does Character AI need my birthday?

It is part of age assurance, the name Character AI gives to how it checks every user's age. Users must usually be at least 13, or 16 if they live in or are citizens of the EU, and the app normally asks you to confirm your age at the points where it needs to, which answers why does Character AI keep asking for my birthday. As for why does Character AI need my ID, the records only say that Persona, an identity assurance provider, handles all age assurance attempts; they do not list which documents it asks for.

And if you are asking why does Character AI say I'm not eligible, the terms carry an eligibility clause built on those minimum ages.

Does deleting my chats help the environment?

It removes stored conversations, which is a tidy habit, but no figure exists for how much that saves. Stored text is generally a small load compared with generating new replies. If you want to cut your share, fewer re-rolls and less use of heavy features like video make more sense than deleting history.

Is any AI companion app on this page greener than Character AI?

No app on this page publishes an environmental figure, so none can be called greener. Some rivals, such as Candy AI, OurDream AI and SpicyChat, sell image or video generation in their paid plans, which suggests heavier use per person, but that is an inference rather than a published fact.

Does Character AI spy on you?

Nothing on file points to spying, but your chats are not private from the company either. Character AI says it keeps some of what you share so it can train its AI models and make them better. Anyone in the EEA or UK can switch that off in the Data & Privacy or Model Improvement settings, but your data can still feed safety classifiers, recommendations and search.

So does Character AI steal your information? I would not use that word, since the use is stated in its own policy, but I would keep personal details out of chats.
