How does Character AI work? Characters, plans and limits
How does Character AI work, in plain terms?
Character AI is a place full of AI characters you can talk to. You either pick one someone else made or build your own, then you chat with it in text, and it answers in character. The company behind it is Character Technologies, Inc., and you can use it on iOS, Android or the web.
I find it easiest to picture the app as a few layers stacked together:
- Characters: a large hub of existing ones, plus the option to create your own
- Chat models: the free plan runs on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, and paid plans add premium chat styles
- Memory: paid plans add memory pins, 30 of them, so key facts stay put
- Voice and images: voice calls and images are listed features, and video sits on paid plans
- Group chat: more than one character can join a conversation
The free plan is the part that surprises people. Character AI says every user gets messaging that is both free and unlimited, with ads, slow mode when the service is busy and limited daily features. So the core loop, talking to characters, costs nothing.
My take: that makes it one of the easiest apps to try with zero risk. No card is needed to see if its writing style clicks with you. The catch is that "unlimited" comes with waiting on busy evenings, and the extras are where the limits live.
Every chat you start stays in your list, and after a few weeks of exploring characters that list gets long. If you ever want to tidy it up, or remove conversations you'd rather not keep, the steps are in my page on how to delete Character AI chats.
The side-by-side table after this section adds Candy AI and OurDream AI. They work quite differently: Character AI is built around a big cast of characters, while the other two lean toward one companion with pictures and voice.
| App | Free option | Lowest monthly cost | Allowed |

| Character AI | Yes | $4.99 | Unconfirmed |
| Candy AI | Yes | €3.99 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| OurDream AI | Yes | $9.99 | Mature chat permitted |
| Nomi AI | Yes | $8.33 | Mature chat permitted |
| GirlfriendGPT | Yes | $12.00 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| SpicyChat | Yes | $5.00 | Mature chat permitted |
What changes when you pay for Character AI?
Paying doesn't unlock a different app. It makes the same app smoother. There are two paid plans, and the differences are about speed, ads, memory and daily limits:
- Free: PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr with no message cap, plus full ads, slow mode and limited daily features
- (c.ai) lite, $4.99 a month: some premium chat-style messages every day, fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization
- c.ai+, $9.99 a month: no ads, no slow mode, unlimited premium chat styles, the highest daily limits and premium support
- c.ai+ Annual, $94.99 a year: everything in c.ai+, or $7.92 a month when spread over twelve months
My view: lite is the plan I'd look at first if memory pins are what you want, since it already has all 30. c.ai+ is for people who use the app daily and hate waiting. The annual plan is a fair deal once you're sure, because the pricing page shows it at $94.99 against $119.88 for twelve monthly payments.
How does memory work on Character AI?
The paid plans give you memory pins: you pin the facts that matter, and they stay in front of the character. Both lite and c.ai+ include 30 pins. On the free plan, pins aren't listed, so the character relies on what's in the conversation.
What happens beyond the pins is mixed. Other reviewers report strong recall of buried facts, but also plausible details the character invented with equal confidence, like a hotel or a cake that was never mentioned. Long chats got messy too, and one reviewer saw a promise from ten messages earlier forgotten, even with an Auto Memories feature in place.
My advice is to treat pins as the reliable memory and everything else as a bonus. If a detail matters to your story, such as a name, a relationship or a running joke, pin it. Don't count on the character to hold it by itself through a long roleplay.

How is Character AI different from a companion app?
This is the question that clears up most confusion. Character AI is a character hub first. Its strength is range: many characters, group chats and your own creations. A companion app usually does the opposite, focusing on one partner who remembers you, talks to you and often sends pictures.
Here's how that difference shows up in practice, compared with the apps on file:
- Content level: Character AI's policy allows no adult content, while Nomi AI, OurDream AI and SpicyChat allow it, and Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT allow it on paid plans
- Free start: Character AI's messaging is free and unlimited, while Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day and GirlfriendGPT starts you with 20 bonus messages, then adds 10 each day through Daily Login
- Platforms: Character AI is on web, iOS and Android, while Candy AI, OurDream AI and SpicyChat are web only
- Pictures: Character AI lists images and paid video, while OurDream AI and Candy AI make image and video generation a core part of their paid plans
My take: if you like variety, stories and switching between characters, Character AI's model suits you, and at no cost it's hard to beat. If you'd rather have a single, steady partner with voice, pictures and romance that can go further, a companion app is the better fit.
For me, the most interesting overlap is SpicyChat. It works a lot like Character AI, with characters and roleplay, group chat and your own creations, but its policy allows adult content and its free plan also keeps text chat unlimited, with ads and waiting lines. It's the closest thing to Character AI with a different content line.
If you're weighing a move, my list of the best Character AI alternatives ranks them with prices and content levels. And there's no rule that says you have to pick one. Plenty of setups work fine with Character AI for clean roleplay and a second app for the rest.
The box right below sums up OurDream AI, a good example of the companion approach: group chat and custom characters like Character AI, but with images, video and a coin system on top.

How does image generation work in Character AI?
Character AI lists images as a feature and video as a paid one. That's as far as the facts on file go. How many images you get, which plan they need, and how you prompt them aren't on file, so I won't give you numbers or steps I can't stand behind. The app's own help pages will have the current details.
What I can do is explain how images work on the other apps, because the contrast is useful. On OurDream AI, summed up in the box above, image and video generation come with the Standard plan, priced at $19.99 a month and bundled with 1,000 dreamcoins every month. Reviewers call the images AI-looking rather than photographic, but praise how well scenes follow the prompt and how consistent a character's face stays. Video there is described as short, coin-hungry and uneven, but a genuine surprise.
Candy AI works differently again. Its plans include 18+ images and videos, plus 100 tokens a month, starting at €13.99 a month. Reviewers describe the images as highly realistic and consistent, but also report that about 1 in 8 generations come back with visible errors, with no free retry.
My take on Character AI's images: think of them as a nice extra on a chat app, not the reason to join. The app is built around conversation, and that's where it shines. If pictures are your top reason for wanting an AI character, an app that sells images as a core feature, with clear pricing per plan, will serve you better.
One thing that's the same everywhere: images are where extra costs tend to hide. Coins, tokens and credits make it hard to know your real monthly spend. Before you pay for any app mainly for images, find out what one image costs in its currency, and set a limit you're comfortable with.
Curious why an app with free unlimited chat keeps some extras behind a paywall? My explainer on how Character AI makes money covers that side. Why does Character AI not work sometimes?
Most "it's broken" moments on Character AI come from how the free plan is designed, not from a fault. The free tier uses slow mode, a reduced response speed when the service is under heavy load. On a busy evening that can look like the app has frozen. It hasn't; it's waiting its turn.
The free plan also comes with limited daily features. If something that worked in the morning stops working at night, a daily limit is a likely reason. c.ai+ removes slow mode and gives the highest daily limits, which is the official way around both. Whether it's worth $9.99 a month depends on how often you hit those walls.
Payments can be a third snag. One published review describes a credit card and a debit card declined repeatedly again and again at the c.ai+ checkout for three weeks. Those cards went through fine on ten other sites, and the only help support offered was to use another card. If that happens to you, it's not your card's fault.
A full outage is different, and I don't have a live reading of the service on this page. If the app won't load at all on any device, it's more likely on their side than yours.
Does Character AI work the same on web, iPhone and Android?
The app is on all three, and your plan works the same way. Where it differs is billing. If you subscribe on the web, you manage the plan through Settings > Account > Manage, which takes you to the Customer Portal.
If you subscribe in the App Store or Google Play, you cancel and ask for refunds through Apple or Google.
My advice: pick one place to pay and stick with it. Mixing a web plan and a store plan is a good way to pay twice without noticing.
I describe features like these from official pages and published reviews only, and I say "not on file" when I don't know. If you'd like to see how that works across the site, here's how the apps on this site are checked. Nothing here is guessed, which is exactly why some answers on this page are short.
How does Character AI's content filter work?
The rule behind it is simple: the content policy allows no adult content. That applies on the free plan, on (c.ai) lite and on c.ai+, so paying changes speed, memory and ads, never the content level. How the filter decides in the moment isn't on file, so I won't guess at its inner workings.
For most roleplay, adventure and clean romance, the filter simply never comes into play. People bump into it when they want a story to go further than the app allows.
My honest advice: don't try to get around it. Workarounds break the rules and put your account at risk, and they don't change the policy. If you're an adult who wants adult content, that's normal, and the respectful route is an app whose policy says yes. The policy and the alternatives get a fuller treatment in my answer on Character AI and NSFW.
Is Character AI the right app for you?
If a friend asked me, this is what I'd say. If you love stories, variety and switching between characters, Character AI is one of the best places to start, and you can do it free with unlimited messaging. Build your own character, add a second one to a group chat and see what happens. It's a genuinely creative app.
It fits less well if you're after a single companion with total recall, voice and pictures as the main event, or romance without a ceiling. For those, a companion app will feel more natural. Nomi AI, for instance, keeps a free plan of 50 messages a day and lists memory as a feature, which suits someone who wants one steady partner rather than a whole cast.
A few things I like about how Character AI works: the free plan is honest, the paid plans are cheap by the standards of this category, and you build your own characters instead of settling for someone else's default. What I don't like: the memory can invent details, and slow mode makes the free plan feel sluggish at peak times.
My verdict: start free, give it a week, and only pay for lite or c.ai+ if the waiting or the missing memory pins really bother you. For most people, the free plan is enough to know.
Common questions
Does Character AI cost anything?
Yes. Character AI offers free and unlimited messaging for all users, on the PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models. The free plan has ads, uses slow mode when the service is busy and has limited daily features. Paid plans start with (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month.
How does Character AI Beta work?
Nothing on file describes a separate Beta version of Character AI, so I can't explain one. What is on file is the current app on web, iOS and Android, with a free plan and two paid plans. If you see a Beta label in the app, its own help pages are the best place to check what it means.
How does Character AI memory work?
Paid plans give you 30 memory pins, so key facts stay in front of the character. Both (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ include them. Reviewers report strong recall of buried facts, but also invented details and forgotten promises in long chats, so pin anything that matters to your story.
Does Character AI have voice and images?
Yes. Voice calls and images are listed features, and video is on paid plans. The details of how many images you get and which plan they need aren't on file. Group chat and custom characters are listed too.
Should I choose (c.ai) lite or c.ai+?
(c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month gives a daily allowance of premium chat styles, fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month removes ads and slow mode entirely and adds unlimited premium chat styles, the highest daily limits and premium support.
If I stop using c.ai+, will I get my money back?
Rarely. Character AI keeps what you've paid unless the law requires a refund, and anything bought in the App Store or Google Play goes back through Apple or Google under their rules. Cancel before your renewal date so the next period isn't charged.
