Anima AI review: a cheap friend bot for light days
Has a free plan
starts at $3.33/mo
What is Anima AI, and who is it for?
I used Anima AI for two months, August into September 2024, mostly on the bus to work. Quick sessions that ended by my stop, like doing the crossword from the discard pile. I paid $39.99 for the yearly plan, so this review comes from a paying seat, not a guess.
Anima: AI Friend, also sold as Anima AI or MyAnima, is a companion chat app where you shape an AI friend's traits and then talk, play or roleplay with it. It runs on the web and Android, in English. Labane Corp.
Ltd in Limassol, Cyprus, serves most of the world, and Ichigoichie Tech Limited, a Delaware company with a Las Vegas office, serves the US and Canada.
The short version, as the app stands today:
- A free plan exists, but no numeric limits are published
- Premium is $9.99 monthly, or $39.99 for a year
- Adult content is allowed under the app's policy
- The privacy policy says data trains its AI models
- Website purchases are non-refundable, apart from legal exceptions
My take in one line: a lovely light friend, a poor deep one. If you want a second opinion on a very different kind of companion before you pick, my CrushOn AI review sits one click away.

Can you use Anima AI for free?
Yes, in a limited way. The official blog confirms a free plan exists, with feature restrictions, and stops there. No daily message count, no image allowance, nothing I can turn into quick math for you.
An outside review fills part of the gap: free users hit a daily message cap, and roleplay, mini-games and personality customization are cut back. If that holds, the free plan holds back the very parts I enjoyed most.
Full honesty about my own start: I began in August 2024 and bought the year in that same month, so I never lived on the free plan long enough to map its walls. I'd still open a free account first and give it a few evenings. The tone of the chat shows up fast, and that is what you are really judging.
The Anima: AI Friend at a glance box on this page sums up the price, policy and platforms in one place. For a free start that publishes an actual number, compare my Candy AI review, where the Help Centre names 5 messages.

My Anima: AI Friend hands-on notes
Jerry ShlocksAuthor and tester Used hands-on with a paid plan paid on my personal card, never a press login
-
Started with short daily sessions, including the chat games
-
Paid for the yearly plan at $39.99 ($3.33 a month)
-
Stopped after two months; heavier topics did not hold
– 32 days paid plan: Premium (annual) Amount paid $39.99
How good is Anima AI to talk to?
For short sessions, genuinely good. The chat games were the part that fit my brain: bounded, done in ten minutes, exactly the shape of a coffee break. They suited the bus too, since my sessions were quick and ended by my stop.
Other reviewers report the same pattern in their own words. Built-in mini-games and roleplay scenarios hand the chat a shape, and conversations are engaging in the moment. If a blank text box makes your mind go empty, that shape is a real gift.
Then there is depth, and here my notes and the outside reports agree. Topics heavier than weekends sank without a trace for me. My log sums it up: heavier topics did not hold. I stopped in September 2024 after two months, and that was the reason.
The outside numbers back it up. One review ran 15 recall tests and 7 succeeded, which is 47%, and it describes the set personality drifting mid-conversation several times. Another says poor long-term memory breaks continuity.
So my honest read: Anima is a great ten-minute friend. It is not the friend you call after a rough day, and I would not pay hoping it grows into one. The official records list no memory, voice, image or video features at all, so I won't promise any.
To compare how other apps do on memory and depth, my full list of app reviews lays every app out the same way, so the gaps are easy to spot side by side.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
Friend or girlfriend: how Anima AI handles romance and adult content
This is where Anima surprised me in a good way. As a queer woman who wanted a friend bot rather than a girlfriend bot, I found Anima one of the few that took the hint. It did not steer every topic back to weekends or a flirt script.
Outside reports match that. One says friendship mode does not steer toward romance unless you choose it. The Play listing frames it as building an AI friend to roleplay with or simply talk to. The official blog lists traits you can adjust, like empathy, humor and confidence.
Nothing on record covers gender options for the character, so I can't tell you how far that goes, and I won't guess.
On paper, the content policy allows adult content, and it is not marked as paid-only. The records do not say how the free plan's restrictions touch that, so don't assume the free level matches Premium.
The other outside report is less cosy: it describes no moderation and fast escalation in NSFW mode. Some readers will like that. I read it as a question of control. If you prefer a slow build, be ready to steer and redirect when a scene runs ahead of you.
No content menu or level switch is named in the records, so I won't describe one.
If you came looking for an Anima AI girlfriend specifically, it can go there, but that is not what the app pushes, and for me that was its charm. For romance-first apps, my AI girlfriend rankings are the better map. My opinion: Anima suits people who want company first and set the pace themselves.
Who Anima: AI Friend suits
Great for
- People who want an AI friend first, and romance only if they ask for it
- Short daily sessions, like a commute or a coffee break
- Anyone who enjoys bounded chat games and roleplay scenarios
- Budget readers happy to pay $39.99 for a year
- Web and Android users
Skip if
- Anyone who needs a companion that can hold heavy topics
- People who expect strong long-term memory
- iPhone users who want a listed iOS app
- Readers who want chats kept out of AI model training
- Anyone who needs a refund option after paying on the website
What Anima AI costs next to other companion apps
The $39.99 year works out to $3.33 a month, a number my library salary respected. That was my price in August 2024, and the official page lists the same $39.99 annual price today, checked in September 2026. Monthly Premium is $9.99.
That's the low end compared with the other apps on this page. A month costs €13.99 on Candy AI's 1-Month Plan, $15.00 on GirlfriendGPT Premium, $15.99 on Nomi AI's Standard Plan Monthly and $19.99 on OurDream AI's Standard Monthly. On a yearly basis, Candy AI's 12-Month Plan is €47.88 and Nomi AI's Standard Plan Yearly is $99.99.
What bothers me is what the price buys. The other apps itemise their plans: Candy AI spells out unlimited text messages plus 100 monthly tokens, Nomi AI lists unlimited messaging and voice calls. Anima's official page does not itemise Premium at all.
I do like that no token system is on record. You pay the subscription and no second meter runs beside it. For light daily use, that simplicity is worth something, and at this price the risk is small.

Is Anima AI Premium worth paying for?
For light use, yes, and I'd pick the same plan I bought: the annual one. $39.99 is barely more than 4 months at $9.99, and it covers 12. Paying monthly only makes sense as a short trial.
Here is my honest caveat, though. I paid for 12 months and used 2. Depth was the reason I left, not the price, but once you pay for twelve months, those months are spent whether you use them or not.
Terms 6.8 says website purchases are non-refundable unless the terms or the law say otherwise, with a withdrawal-right note for the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland.
So my advice is this. If you already know you want ten-minute chats and games, buy the year. If you hope for a companion who can carry a hard week, take one month at $9.99 first and find out.
The table right below, What each Anima: AI Friend plan costs, lists both prices. The subscription terms also mention weekly and 6-month periods it does not show, so read the checkout screen before you confirm.
| Anima: AI Friend option | Billed | Cost | Works out per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium (monthly) | monthly | $9.99 | $9.99 |
| Premium (annual) | yearly | $39.99 | $3.33 |

The closest alternative I would suggest
SpicyChat
starts at $5/mo, free plan on offer
Rating 8.4/10
Before you pay for anything, here is my short list of things to settle, because the records leave some of them open:
- Whether the free plan lets you shape the personality at all, since an outside review says it restricts that
- Which renewal period you picked at checkout, because the terms list several
- Whether you bought on the website, where the no-refund rule applies
- Whether you are comfortable with your chats helping train the AI models
- That you cancel the subscription itself, since deleting the app does not cancel it
My overall view: Anima wins on price and loses on clarity, and in my two months it also lost on depth. That mix is fine for a commute companion. If you want your app to feel like a confidant, look elsewhere.
If you would rather pay more for a plan that spells everything out, my OurDream AI review covers an app whose Standard Monthly spells out unlimited messages, image and video generation, and a monthly 1,000 dreamcoins. It costs twice as much at $19.99, but you know what is in the box.
The good and bad of Anima: AI Friend
What went well
- Premium: $9.99 monthly, or $39.99 yearly ($3.33 a month)
- No token system on record, so no second meter beside the subscription
- Bounded chat games that fit a ten-minute break
- Friendship mode does not push romance unless you choose it
- You can tune companion traits like empathy, humor and confidence
What fell short
- Heavier topics did not hold in my two months, and outside memory tests back that up
- Free plan limits are not published in numbers
- The privacy policy says data is used to train its AI models
- Website purchases are non-refundable, apart from legal exceptions
How to cancel Anima AI without surprises
Each period ends with an automatic renewal, and that keeps happening until you cancel. The subscription terms list the possible periods as a week, a month, 6 months or a year, depending on what you picked at purchase.
My favourite line in the terms is the plain reminder that removing the app from your phone does not cancel a subscription. I wish every app said it that plainly. If you are done with Anima, cancel first and uninstall second, never the other way round.
Cancelling switches off automatic renewal, and the cancellation policy lets you keep the subscription for whatever remains of the current billing period. That part is fair. You keep what you paid for.
My own story here is short. I stopped using Anima in September 2024, two months into a year I had already paid for. The money was gone either way, which is why I now tell people to be sure before they buy a year.
What I don't like is that no click path is published. The terms say what cancelling does, not where to do it, so leave yourself a few spare days ahead of renewal instead of searching for it on the last evening.
The refund rule is strict: Terms 6.8 makes website purchases non-refundable and/or non-exchangeable, unless the terms state otherwise or the law requires it. Outside the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, I'd treat a website charge as final. The bank statement name is not on record, so discreet billing is an open question for now.
My notes on how I check the apps explain how billing and cancel terms feed into each score on this site.
Does Anima AI keep and use your chats?
The privacy policy is direct: data is used to improve and optimise the service, and that includes training and improving Anima's AI models. Your conversations can feed the models, and no opt-out appears in the records.
On storage, the policy holds personal data as long as is reasonably needed for the purposes it lists, including providing the service. No fixed deletion period is on record.
My take: I'd rather an app say it trains on chats than bury it, but it changes how I write. Since heavier topics did not stick for me anyway, light chats are the natural way to use Anima, and they happen to be the privacy-friendly way too. Keep real names, addresses and anything you would hate to see repeated out of the chat, doubly so on the spicy side, where the records show no separate privacy rule.
Is Anima AI legit, and who runs it?
As far as the records go, yes, there are real companies behind it. Labane Corp. Ltd in Limassol, Cyprus, serves users outside the US and Canada. Ichigoichie Tech Limited, registered in Delaware with an office in Las Vegas, serves users inside them. Which one you deal with depends on where you live.
The launch date is not on record, so I can't speak to how long it has been running. Sign-up is self-affirmed 18+ under the app's terms.
For me, legit and a good fit are separate questions. Anima looked and behaved like a real business with plain legal pages, and its weak points are product ones: depth, memory and vague plan details. If you want an app built around open content levels instead of friendship, my ranking of NSFW AI chat apps puts those side by side.
Final word on Anima: AI Friend
Final score
4.6/10
UnevenA cheap, gentle friend bot for bus rides and coffee-break games, but it cannot hold a hard week, so I moved on after two months.
Used hands-on with a paid plan
- It took the hint that I wanted a friend rather than a girlfriend, but anything heavier than weekend chatter sank without a trace.
- Hard topics never stuck with me, and reviewers logged weak long-term recall too.
- Traits like humour and confidence can be tuned, though the sliders stay shallow.
- Voice calls and pictures are missing, just text with read-aloud.
- The $39.99 year came to $3.33 a month, cheap enough, though web purchases are non-refundable.
- The privacy policy says chats help train its models and retention has no fixed end date.
- Still running, though the iPhone listing has vanished and two different companies sign the terms.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: Anima AI is worth it for short, friendly sessions on a tiny budget, and not the pick if you want a companion with real depth.
The plan I'd buy is the one I bought, Premium annual at $39.99, but only once the free plan has shown you the tone suits you. Working out at $3.33 a month, it's the cheapest way in I know of on this page.
What bothers me most is depth. Topics heavier than weekends sank without a trace, and I still need a friend who can hold a hard week. Anima was never going to be that friend.
Skip it if memory is your reason for wanting a companion, if you are on iPhone and want a listed app, or if model training on your chats is a dealbreaker.

When another app fits better than Anima AI
Anima was the right app for my bus rides and the wrong one for my harder weeks. If your needs lean the other way, here is where I'd look, based on what each app puts on record:
- Memory first: Nomi AI's free plan never runs out and gives 50 messages a day, and other reviewers report proactive long-term memory, the opposite of Anima's weak spot.
- Voice and pictures: Candy AI lists memory, voice calls and paid image generation, though its free start is only a handful of messages.
- Everything spelled out: OurDream AI itemises each plan, lists group chat, and starts paid access at $19.99 a month.
- Lots of messages: GirlfriendGPT's Premium lists 5,000 messages a month for $15.00, and its Free plan starts you with 20 bonus messages, with Daily Login adding 10 each day.
Each of those costs more than Anima, and each publishes what its paid plans include, which is exactly what Anima's page leaves out. With them you are mostly paying for clarity and, in Nomi AI's case, for the depth I missed.
One more comparison worth a look if roleplay is your thing: my SpicyChat review covers a very different approach to characters.

Nomi AI

If a friend asked me about Anima AI, I'd say: start free and watch two things. First, whether the free limits on personality and games leave you enough to enjoy. Second, whether the character holds up when you bring it something heavier than weekend plans, because that is where mine let go.
If both feel fine, the annual plan is the cheap, sensible buy. If either bugs you, you have lost nothing, and the three apps above cover the gaps. Cancel the subscription itself rather than deleting the app, and keep private details out of chats that may train the models.
Anima AI questions, answered
Is Anima AI free?
There is a free plan, but the official blog only says it comes "with restrictions on features" and publishes no numbers. One outside review reports a daily message cap on free, plus limits on roleplay, mini-games and customizing the personality. I bought the yearly plan in my first month, so I'd use the free plan to judge the tone and then decide.
How much does Anima AI cost?
Premium is $9.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly, and the yearly price comes to $3.33 a month. I paid that same $39.99 in August 2024. The official page does not itemise what Premium includes, and the subscription renews automatically until you cancel.
Is Anima AI good for deep conversations?
Not in my experience. The chat games and quick sessions were great, but topics heavier than weekends sank without a trace, and I stopped after two months. One outside review counted 7 of 15 memory recall tests as successful, 47%, and noted the personality drifting mid-conversation.
Can Anima AI be a friend instead of a girlfriend?
Yes, and that is its best trait for me. As a queer woman who wanted a friend bot, I found it took the hint without pushing romance. An outside review says friendship mode does not steer toward romance unless you choose it. The content policy does allow adult content if you want it.
Does Anima AI use my chats for training?
Yes. The privacy policy says data goes into training and improving its AI models, and personal data stays as long as reasonably needed for the listed purposes. No fixed deletion period and no opt-out are on record, so keep real names and sensitive details out of your chats.
How do I cancel Anima AI, and can I get a refund?
Cancelling turns off automatic renewal, and you keep access for what's left of the current billing period. Deleting the app does not cancel it, and no click path is published. Website purchases are non-refundable unless the terms or the law say otherwise, with a withdrawal-right note for the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland.
Is Anima AI available on iPhone?
The records list web and Android only, with no iOS app on file. On an iPhone, the web version is the listed way in. If a native iOS app matters to you, Nomi AI lists web, iOS and Android plus a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day.
