What is Janitor AI, and who is it for?

Janitor AI is a character hub for text roleplay, where you chat with bots the community builds or make your own. It's run by JanitorAI Inc. in the United States, runs in a browser plus iOS and Android apps, and has an interface in eleven languages. I used it for four months in late 2025, entirely free, and it's the one I still miss.

Here's the shape of it:

  • A free plan with unlimited chats on the built-in JLLM model, per the official wording
  • An optional Janitor+ subscription at $12.99 a month
  • Build your own characters with personality, scenario and greeting fields
  • Text only: no voice, no image generation, no video
  • Outside models can be connected with your own keys

My take: Janitor AI is the best free roleplay library I know, with one big asterisk. Memory is its weak side, and the clever parts, like bringing your own model, ask you to learn some plumbing.

As a queer reader, I like that the library isn't built around one kind of user. Millions of community characters means whatever you're looking for, someone has probably written it, and if not, you write it yourself.

If replies feel slow, my guide on how to make Janitor AI faster covers the usual fixes.

Janitor AI free: what the free tier really gives

I started in September 2025 with unlimited free roleplay and the community bots, and I never paid Janitor AI a cent. When I was using it, the count was 3.8 million community bots. I kept forty-one favorited in a private tiered folder system I will not be defending today.

So what are the Janitor AI free tier limits in 2026? Officially, the free plan covers unlimited JLLM chats and swipes with millions of bots, standard models, JLLM-short and a context window of about 9k tokens. When Janitor+ was announced in June 2026, the company promised the free tier would not change at all and would cost nothing.

The catch is that the official line and outside sources disagree. Several secondary sources say that in practice the free built-in model stops at roughly 50 messages daily. No numeric cap is published, so I'd treat 50 as a possibility, not a rule, and plan your long sessions accordingly.

My view: even with that doubt, this is the most generous free start I know of. You need no card and no token balance to begin.

How I check the apps

Janitor AI chat quality, and bringing your own model

The chat is where Janitor AI earns my loyalty, and the comedy bots are a genre of their own. A passive-aggressive Tudor queen handled my library-drama retellings better than my actual friends. My friends are queer librarians, so that is a genuinely high bar.

In October 2025 I went a step further and connected outside models with my own API keys. Bring-your-own models means choosing your own brain: a cheap model for banter, a big model for the big scenes. It's a technical-services approach to drama, and I mean that as praise. The token costs went to the model provider, not to Janitor AI.

That flexibility is what people usually ask about when they search for a Janitor AI proxy. My explainer on what a proxy is in Janitor AI walks through the idea without the jargon.

Memory is the honest weak spot. Each chat on the free JLLM model can hold somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 tokens of context, and memory isn't listed as an official feature. Other reviewers report drift and forgotten details on the free model after only 20 to 30 messages, and recall that is fine in one sitting but fades over chats that span several days.

Janitor+ promises "5x more context for better memory," which is the clearest reason to pay I can find. Bring-your-own models are the other route, if you're willing to manage keys.

My read: for one evening of roleplay, Janitor AI is superb. For a character who remembers last week, it takes work, either money or setup. If you want a companion that simply remembers, this is not the easiest pick.

There's no group chat either. Since a June 2026 update you can swap between several personas inside a single-character chat, which is handy, but it isn't several bots in one scene.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

Janitor AI rules and content settings

Janitor AI's content policy allows adult content, and the platform is intended only for people over 18. Most of the level comes from the character you pick and how its creator wrote it. The record doesn't name a filter switch, so I won't invent one.

For the Janitor AI NSFW question in plain terms: adult roleplay is allowed under the policy on the free plan as well as Janitor+, as far as the published plans show. Janitor+ adds context, priority messages and frontier-model swipes, not a different content level.

Access rules differ by country. Accounts connecting from Australia, Brazil or the UK need a one-time third-party check through k-ID, with facial estimation, an ID scan or AgeKey as options, because local law requires it. Everywhere else, the terms rely on your own declaration.

Characters are where Janitor AI shines for me as a queer reader. You build bots on the character-creation page with personality, scenario and greeting fields, so nobody decides for you who your character is. That community-first approach is also why the library is so varied, from romance to my beloved comedy bots.

What you don't get is media. There's no voice, no native image generation and no video. If you want to hear a character or see a picture, you'll need another app.

My view: the content rules are grown-up and the controls are yours, which is what a roleplay hub should be. The trade-off is quality control. With a library this big, a lot depends on who wrote the bot, and not every creator writes well. Favorite the good ones fast.

If you want the same freedom with images or voice on top, my list of Janitor AI alternatives sorts the options by what they add.

Janitor AI pricing: free, Janitor+ and token costs

Janitor AI pricing is simple on the surface. There's the free plan, and there's Janitor+ at $12.99 a month. Janitor+ adds 5x more context for better memory, unlimited priority messages, more swipes with frontier models, a golden username and checkmark, and comment react emojis.

I never bought Janitor+. My four months cost Janitor AI nothing, and I still rate that free start as one of the best in the genre.

Where money can creep in is outside models. Janitor+ is a flat subscription, not a token plan. A separate opt-in add-on, JanitorRouter, requires Janitor+ and bills connected third-party models per token, at rates shown for each model. When you connect a model with your own API key instead, the token costs go to that model's provider.

Friction, then, is the Janitor AI API key route. API keys are a rite of passage, and token costs taught this public-salary budgeter lessons she thought she already knew. The lesson I'd pass on: set a spending limit with the provider before your first long scene.

Janitor+ is a flat monthly plan. Outside models bill per token, either through JanitorRouter or through your own provider.

Is Janitor+ worth $12.99?

For most people, I'd say not yet. The free plan is what made me a fan, and I used it for four months without paying. Start there and see if the memory limits actually bother you.

Janitor+ makes sense in one case: you roleplay long stories and keep losing details. Five times the context is a real fix for that, and I'd call $12.99 a month fair for it. The golden username and emoji reactions are cute, but I wouldn't pay for them.

If you're technical, compare it with the bring-your-own route. A cheap outside model for everyday chat can cost little, but you carry the budgeting yourself, and nothing caps it for you unless you set a limit. Janitor+ is the predictable choice. Your own keys are the flexible one.

Skip JanitorRouter until you know which models you actually want, because per-token billing adds up quietly.

The table of what each Janitor AI plan costs follows below.

Janitor AI option Billed Cost Works out per month
Janitor+ monthly $12.99 $12.99

The closest alternative I would suggest

That card puts a partner app next to Janitor AI. They solve different problems, so here's how I'd choose:

  • Stay with Janitor AI if you want a vast free library and the freedom to write your own bots.
  • Look elsewhere if you want voice calls, images or video in the same app.
  • Stay with Janitor AI if you like choosing your own model with API keys.
  • Look elsewhere if you want long-term memory without paying or tinkering.

A companion app like the partner card packages everything for you: chat, media and memory in one plan. Janitor AI hands you parts and lets you build. I enjoy building, but I know plenty of people who'd rather not.

One tip before you leave any roleplay app: tidy up your history. My Janitor AI chat deletion steps walk you through it, and it's worth doing before you move on.

My take: Janitor AI wins on price and freedom. The partner card wins on convenience. Only you know which of those you're short on.

The good and bad of Janitor AI

What went well

  • Free plan with unlimited JLLM chats, per the official wording
  • Millions of community characters, plus your own bots
  • Connect outside models with your own API keys
  • Janitor+ is a flat $12.99 a month, not a token plan
  • Deleting your account removes all your data permanently

What fell short

  • Memory is weak across long, multi-day chats
  • No voice, images or video
  • Free message limits are disputed, with no official number
  • Subscriptions are generally non-refundable

Cancelling Janitor+ and what happens next

My own test ended in December 2025 after four months, and since I was on the free plan, there was nothing to cancel. If you do subscribe, here is the path.

On the web: go to Settings, select Billing, then Manage Subscription. You're redirected to Stripe's billing page, where you can cancel anytime. If you subscribed in the mobile app, you have to manage it through the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android, because app-based subscriptions can't be cancelled from the web.

When you cancel, Janitor+ keeps working for whatever is left of the month you paid for. After that, the account falls back to the free tier. I like that a lot: you drop back to the free plan instead of being locked out, and only the Janitor+ extras go.

On refunds, the rule is short: as a rule you don't get subscription money back, unless the Terms of Service or applicable law say you must. So I'd buy one month first rather than committing to anything longer.

The other bill to stop is outside model usage. Cancelling Janitor+ doesn't touch your accounts with outside model providers. If you connected your own API keys, revoke or cap them with the provider too, or a forgotten key can keep costing you. JanitorRouter needs Janitor+, so that one ends with the subscription.

If token billing still feels murky, my explainer on what tokens are in Janitor AI breaks it down with plain numbers.

My advice in one line: cancel in the same place you paid, then check your model provider's dashboard. The billing note below has the exact wording.

Is Janitor AI safe for your data?

Deletion is Janitor AI's strongest privacy point. Deleting your account is permanent: all data, including posts, characters, personas and profile information, is removed and can't be recovered. You do it under Settings > Security > Delete account, and then type in a 6-digit code sent to your email. I like the email code, because it stops an accidental tap.

Training is the gap. Whether your chats are used to train models isn't stated in anything on record, so I'd treat it as unknown. If that matters to you, keep personal details out of your roleplay.

Bringing your own model adds a second party. When you connect an outside model with an API key, your messages go to that provider too, under its own privacy rules. Read them before you connect.

So is Janitor AI safe? It's a US company with published help articles, a clear deletion process and a stated 18+ policy. As a service, I'd call it legit. For privacy, I'd call it good on deletion and silent on training.

What shows on your statement, and is it up?

The statement descriptor isn't on record, so I can't tell you which name shows. On the web, payments run through Stripe. In the apps, the charge comes from Apple or Google, which is the more discreet option on a shared card.

Janitor AI also runs a public status page, which is useful when the chat stalls. If replies stop coming, check whether Janitor AI is down before you blame your connection.

You can reach the Janitor AI official website at janitorai.com. For privacy questions, the help centre is where the policies live.

Final word on Janitor AI

Final score

6.6/10

Okay

Janitor AI is the one I still miss: unlimited free roleplay, a vast bot library and your own models, as long as you want text and can manage API keys.

Used hands-on with the free plan

  • A passive-aggressive Tudor queen handled my library-drama retellings better than my friends.
  • Reviewers find memory fine within a scene and shaky across multi-day stories.
  • Millions of community bots plus bring-your-own models let me pick a cheap brain for banter and a big one for climaxes.
  • It is text only: no images, no voice, no video.
  • Roleplay is unlimited and free; my only costs were outside model tokens that taught me budgeting lessons.
  • Account deletion is permanent, while its stance on training stays unclear.
  • It kept up through my four months and publishes a public status page.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: worth it for roleplay on a budget, a letdown if you expect a companion to remember you with no effort on your part.

The plan I'd pick is the free one, and that's not a dodge. I used it for four months and still miss it. Add Janitor+ at $12.99 only if memory keeps breaking your longer stories.

What bothers me most is how much homework the good parts need. Memory takes money or setup, and the bring-your-own route turns you into your own billing department. Skip Janitor AI if you want voice, images, video or a companion that just works. Keep it if you want the biggest free library and a Tudor queen with opinions.

The closest alternative I would suggest

Where to go if Janitor AI isn't enough

Janitor AI is a roleplay library. If you need something it doesn't do, these are my picks:

  • You want memory that lasts: Nomi AI lists memory as a feature, and one outside review says it recalls details proactively over time.
  • You want voice calls: Candy AI lists voice calls as a feature, and its 1-Month Plan is €13.99.
  • You want images and video: OurDream AI's Standard Monthly at $19.99 includes image and video generation.
  • You want to keep it free: stay on Janitor AI and sharpen your prompts.

On that last point, better prompts fix more than people think. My collection of Janitor AI prompts is a good place to start before you jump ship.

The honest trade-off is money. Every alternative here charges for its best features, while Janitor AI gives its library away. If you move, you're paying for convenience, media or memory, and that's a fine reason, as long as you know that's the deal.

If you do switch, I'd bring your favorite character ideas with you. The bots won't transfer, but a well-written personality and scenario can be rebuilt on any app that supports custom characters.

My friend advice: keep Janitor AI as your free playground, and add a paid companion only if you want voice, images or memory. For many readers, the free plan alone will do.

Instead of Janitor AI

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

The three cards below are the apps I'd look at if Janitor AI's text-only, memory-light setup isn't enough for you. Each one adds something Janitor AI leaves out: stronger memory, voice calls, or image and video generation. They all cost more once you want those extras, so check the free start on each card before you pay.

None of them has Janitor AI's community library at the same scale. Each card opens a full review with plans, billing and the refund wording.

Janitor AI questions people ask

What is Janitor AI?

Janitor AI is a character hub for text roleplay from JanitorAI Inc. in the United States. You chat with bots built by the community or create your own with personality, scenario and greeting fields. You can use it in a browser or on iOS and Android; there is no voice, images or video.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. The free plan covers unlimited chats and swipes on the built-in JLLM model with millions of bots, according to the official wording. Several outside sources put the real-world limit near 50 messages daily, but no number is published. I used the free plan for four months without paying.

How much is Janitor+?

Janitor+ is $12.99 per month, and for that you get 5x more context for better memory, unlimited priority messages, more swipes with frontier models, a golden username and checkmark, and comment react emojis. It is a flat subscription, not a token plan.

How do Janitor AI tokens and API keys work?

You can connect outside models with your own API keys, and the token costs then go to the model provider, not to Janitor AI. A separate add-on, JanitorRouter, requires Janitor+ and bills third-party models per token at rates shown for each model. Set a spending limit with your provider first.

What happened to Janitor AI in 2026?

In June 2026 Janitor AI announced Janitor+, its paid plan, and promised that the free tier would stay unchanged and free of charge. A June 2026 update also added multi-persona switching inside a single-character chat.

How do I make Janitor AI responses shorter?

The free plan lists a model called JLLM-short, but no official page on record explains what it changes, so I won't promise it shortens replies. The reliable lever is the character's own instructions. My guides on custom prompts and prompts cover how to write them.

How do I cancel Janitor+?

On the web, go to Settings, then Billing, then Manage Subscription, and cancel on the Stripe page. If you subscribed in the app, you cancel from your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Janitor+ lasts until your paid period is over, and then you're back on the free tier.
