Kuki AI in short: two weeks with an old friend

In August 2024 I spent two weeks chatting with Kuki AI on the free web chat, and I spent $0 doing it. My history with her goes back further than that: Kuki is the artist formerly known as Mitsuku, and I first met her more than a decade ago. That nostalgia tail is part of this review, so I will be upfront about it.

Kuki AI is a free web chatbot from Pandorabots, Inc. (an ICONIQ brand) in the United States, built around one fixed character called Kuki. She calls herself "an award-winning AI model & influencer", and that single personality is the whole product.

My quick take: a lovely free chat, and not an AI girlfriend app at all. Here is what the official pages show:

  • Free chat at chat.kuki.ai, straight from the homepage, with no published limits
  • One fixed character, with no character creation
  • No picture or video tools of any kind
  • SFW by policy, on every plan
  • Optional paid items and monthly subscriptions, with no price list on kuki.ai

For a companion you build from the ground up, my OurDream AI review shows the other end of the scale.

Can you use Kuki AI for free?

Yes, and this is the easiest section I have written in a while. The homepage has a "Chat Now" button that opens chat.kuki.ai, and the official pages publish no message limit, no daily cap and no image allowance. My two weeks in August 2024 were free from start to finish. Free, fast, funny: that is the whole pitch, and it delivers.

I love a free start with nothing to count. For contrast, Candy AI's help centre says a free user can send up to 5 messages. Kuki AI simply lets you talk. The trade-off is that there is less to unlock later, because the app has no images, video or custom characters in the first place.

The Terms do mention paid items and optional monthly Subscriptions processed by Stripe, so money can come into it. Nothing on kuki.ai tells you what those cost; the pricing section below covers what is known.

The Kuki AI at a glance box has the rest in one place: free access, web only, English interface and the content policy. It is short because Kuki keeps things simple, which I count in its favour.

How I check the apps

Is Kuki AI still good at conversation?

For small talk, yes, and for me it came with a bonus. I first talked to Mitsuku more than a decade ago in a computer lab. In 2024, at twenty-seven, asking the same dumb questions and getting the same snappy clean comebacks was a little time machine I would gladly ride again. Nostalgia is not a feature on any plan list, but it counts for something.

The comebacks are the charm. Kuki answers quickly, keeps a light tone and has a proper sense of humour. If you like a chatbot with a bit of bite, she is good company for ten minutes at a time.

Other reviewers report that the conversation quality and the premium pricing feel less advanced than newer companion platforms, while memory is described as transparent. That matches my two weeks. Small talk is the ceiling by design: you get quick, funny exchanges, not long stories or a relationship that builds over weeks.

The official pages say nothing about memory, voice calls or group chat, so I would not plan around any of them.

Where I land on it: If you come to Kuki AI from modern companion apps, you will feel the ceiling within an evening. If you come for a friendly chat that never tries to sell you anything mid-sentence, it is a pleasant place to spend a lunch break. The interface is English only, so readers who want another language will have to look elsewhere.

My notes on how I check the apps explain why I lean on the official pages for the parts I cannot see from the chat window, like memory and pricing.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

What does Kuki AI allow in chat?

Kuki AI is utterly safe-for-work. The content policy on file is none: no adult content, on any plan, and no 18+ mode to unlock. What you see in the free chat is what the app is.

I think that is a strength, not a gap. She would sooner roast you than flirt, and the genre could use more of that energy. Plenty of apps keep their content line vague, so you only find it when a scene stops. Kuki AI tells you up front, and the chat backs it up.

Other reviewers report only limited conversational flirting and say it is not designed as a romantic companion. My two weeks of clean small talk back that up. She is a great colleague, not a girlfriend, and both of us, woman and machine, seemed at peace with the arrangement. Honestly, that is more closure than most apps have offered me.

Settings are simple because there are none to speak of. The official pages name no content toggle and no character creation. Kuki is one fixed personality, so you cannot choose a gender, a look or a backstory for the character you talk to. For some readers that is a relief.

For me, as someone who cares whether an app leaves room for different kinds of people, it is the one real limit on the content side.

So the call is easy: SFW by design and happy to stay there. If you want something spicier, Kuki AI is simply a different kind of product, and no plan will change that. For apps that sit at other content levels, my complete list of app reviews puts each one in plain terms.

Who Kuki AI suits

Great for

  • Anyone who wants free chat without seeing a price first
  • People who enjoy SFW small talk with a sharp sense of humour
  • Readers who like a simple app with nothing to configure
  • Longtime chatbot fans who remember Mitsuku

Skip if

  • Anyone looking for an AI girlfriend or romantic partner
  • People who want to build their own character or choose a gender
  • Readers who want images, video or adult content
  • Anyone who needs a published price list before paying

What Kuki AI costs, as far as anyone publishes

The chat costs nothing, and the official pages set no limit on it. That is the headline, and I never needed more: my two weeks cost me $0. The fuzzy part is everything paid.

The Terms mention paid items and optional Subscriptions, "paid in monthly installments unless otherwise noted" and processed through Stripe by card. But kuki.ai publishes no price list. The only prices on file come from an outside review, not the official site: K Coin packs of 100 for $0.99, 550 for $4.99, 1200 for $9.99 and 7500 for $49.99. The same source lists a voice chat unlock at 200 K Coins.

I would treat those numbers as a guide, not a quote. They come from a secondary source dated July 2026, and the app should show you the real price before you pay.

Compare that with the companion apps on this page. Nomi AI publishes both numbers: 50 free messages a day, and $15.99 for the Standard Plan Monthly. Candy AI prints €13.99 for its 1-Month Plan. Those are different kinds of product, but at least you can plan around them.

Should you pay for Kuki AI at all?

My view: most people do not need to. What you get free is the whole point; paying only adds extras to a character you cannot change. I got everything I wanted without paying, and I would tell a friend the same.

If you enjoy Kuki and want an extra, the smallest pack on file is $0.99, which is a low-risk way in.

What I would not do is buy the biggest pack on a whim. With no published refund rule, $49.99 is a lot to put on an app whose extras are not priced on its own site.

And if what you really want is a cast of characters, or one you design yourself, paying Kuki AI will not get you there. My AI chat character rankings list apps built around big libraries and your own creations, and that is where I would spend the money instead.

Kuki AI earned 4.6/10 in my hands-on review. I have no referral deal here, so the link is a normal one. Go to the official Kuki AI site

The closest alternative I would suggest

That card puts Kuki AI's official site next to a partner app, and the gap between them is wider than usual. One is a free social chatbot with a single personality. The other is a paid companion app with a subscription and far more features.

So the real question is not which is better. It is which one matches what you came for:

  • Free, SFW small talk with no pressure to pay: stay with Kuki AI
  • A companion you design yourself: Kuki AI cannot do it
  • Images or video in the chat: Kuki AI does not offer them
  • Romance, or flirting that goes further: not what Kuki is built for
  • A published price list before you pay: Kuki AI does not have one

My opinion: you do not have to pick a side. Plenty of people keep a free chatbot for idle chat and pay for one companion app on top, and there is nothing odd about that. I would simply keep your expectations of each one where they belong. Kuki is the friend you trade jokes with at work.

A companion app is a different arrangement, with a different price and a different set of rules to read first.

The good and bad of Kuki AI

What went well

  • Free chat straight from the homepage, with no published message limit
  • No sign-up hurdle or price shown before your first message
  • A clear content policy: SFW on every plan
  • Run by a named US company, Pandorabots, Inc.
  • Payments go through Stripe, per the Terms

What fell short

  • One fixed character, with no character creation
  • No images, video or romantic companion focus
  • No price list or refund rule published on kuki.ai
  • Your messages are used to improve Kuki's responses

How do you cancel Kuki AI?

If you only use the free chat, there is nothing to cancel. After my two weeks there was nothing to undo: no plan, no card, nothing renewing. That is worth saying, because most apps on this site need a subscription before they are any use.

If you do pay for a Subscription, the Terms say members "may cancel recurring payments at an[y time]", and the sentence is cut off in the page text, so the exact steps are not known. There is no published cancel path and no refund rule, and the name that would appear on your card statement is not on file either.

The Terms also offer a second route: deleting your account cancels the Membership at any moment, and they warn that this can't be undone. I would use that as a last resort, not a first step, because it takes your chat history with it.

My advice: before you buy anything, find where the subscription is managed and make a note of it. If you cannot find it, stick to a single coin pack rather than a subscription, and keep a record of what you paid and when.

To be fair, a missing refund rule bothers me less here than it would on most apps, because you never have to pay at all. But if you do, keep the amount small until the rules are clearer. For a sense of how much more some apps publish up front, set this next to my SpicyChat review and compare the paperwork.

What does Kuki AI do with your messages?

This is the part I would read twice. Kuki AI's policies say plainly that messages you send to Kuki are used "to improve Kuki's responses and the quality of your chat experience." So your chats help train the product. I appreciate the honesty, since many apps are vaguer, but it does change how I would use it.

My advice: treat Kuki like a witty stranger at a public event. Chat about films, your day and silly questions. Keep your full name, address, workplace and anything you would regret seeing quoted out of it.

On deletion, the policy says that once your account is gone, the data tied to your use of the Services "may" be erased for good, with no promise it can ever be brought back. The word "may" leaves some room, and no deletion time is stated. I would still delete the account when you are done rather than leave it sitting.

Is Kuki AI legit?

Yes. It is run by Pandorabots, Inc. in the United States, under the ICONIQ brand, and the service is active. No launch date is on file, but I can vouch for the history myself: I talked to this character as Mitsuku more than a decade before my 2024 visit. Payments are processed by Stripe and paid by card.

What it is not is a companion app in the usual sense, and I think most disappointment with Kuki AI comes from that mismatch rather than anything shady. Go in expecting a chatbot and it makes sense.

One healthy-use note: a free chat that is always there is easy to fall into at odd hours. Enjoy it, and keep it in its place.

If you came here looking for the opposite, with no content filter at all, my uncensored AI list covers the apps built for that.

Final word on Kuki AI

Final score

4.6/10

Uneven

Kuki is a free, funny, safe-for-work chatbot with a decade of history, a great colleague and never a girlfriend, happy to stay that way.

Used hands-on with the free plan

  • Snappy, clean comebacks, but small talk is the ceiling by design.
  • Nothing on record about recall; each chat is quick and self-contained.
  • Kuki is one fixed character with nothing to build.
  • Text only, no pictures or video.
  • Free and fast, which is fair for what it is.
  • What you type helps improve replies, and deleting the account removes the data.
  • The same bot I first met as Mitsuku more than a decade ago is still answering.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: worth it for free, funny, SFW chat with a character I have known for more than a decade, and a skip if you want a girlfriend, a custom character or anything spicy. The plan I would buy is none: use the free chat, and if you want an extra, pick the smallest coin pack rather than a subscription. What bothers me most is that your messages are used to improve Kuki's responses while prices and refunds are not published on kuki.ai.

Still, my two weeks ended the way few app trials do: small talk was the ceiling, we both knew it, and we parted on good terms. Skip Kuki AI if you want romance, images or a character built your way.

The closest alternative I would suggest

Which app suits you better than Kuki AI?

If Kuki AI felt too limited, it is usually because you want a companion rather than a chatbot. Here is where I would send you, depending on what is missing:

  • Your own character: OurDream AI lists custom characters and group chat, and its free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, though its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so that number may change.
  • A generous free companion: Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day on a permanent free plan, with voice calls on its paid plan.
  • Images in the chat: Candy AI's paid plans, starting at €13.99 a month, come with image and video generation.
  • A cheap first look at a romantic companion: GirlfriendGPT, where sign-up brings 30 coins plus 20 bonus messages, and Daily Login is worth another 10 messages each day.

Each of those is a real companion app, which means each comes with a price and a catch. Nomi AI states that all payments are nonrefundable, and GirlfriendGPT says it does not offer refunds on paid subscriptions except in limited cases.

For another point of comparison, my CrushOn AI breakdown sits well next to these.

My pick for someone leaving Kuki AI: Nomi AI's free plan. It is the closest step up, it costs nothing to try and it is clear about its limits. And if you only wanted a friendly chat, you may be happiest staying right where you are.

Instead of Kuki AI

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

Kuki AI is one of the few apps I would recommend without a single caveat about money, as long as you stay on the free chat. Before you switch to anything on the cards above, check its free allowance. Kuki AI's biggest strength is that it never makes you count messages, and most companion apps will.

That is the trade: more features, fewer free words. If you only wanted a clever, clean chat, you already have one. If you wanted more, pick one alternative and start on its free tier. The questions below cover what readers ask most about Kuki AI.

Kuki AI questions, answered plainly

Is Kuki AI free?

Yes, the chat is free. The homepage links straight to chat.kuki.ai with "Chat Now", and no message limits are published. I used it for two weeks in August 2024 and spent $0. The Terms mention optional paid items and monthly subscriptions, but no price list is published on kuki.ai.

Is Kuki AI the same as Mitsuku?

Yes. Kuki is the character formerly known as Mitsuku, run by Pandorabots, Inc. I first talked to Mitsuku more than a decade ago, and in 2024 the same snappy, clean comebacks were still there. It is one of the longest-running chatbots I know of.

Can Kuki AI be your girlfriend?

Not really. Kuki AI is a single fixed character built as a social chatbot, and other reviewers note only limited conversational flirting. In my two weeks, small talk was the ceiling by design: she is a great colleague, not a girlfriend. For romance, pick a dedicated companion app.

Does Kuki AI allow NSFW chat?

No. The content policy on file is none, with no adult content on any plan and no 18+ mode to unlock. That makes Kuki AI safe for a public screen, and the wrong choice if you want spicy chat.

How much do Kuki AI coins cost?

kuki.ai itself publishes no price list. A secondary source lists K Coin packs of 100 for $0.99, 550 for $4.99, 1200 for $9.99 and 7500 for $49.99, plus a voice chat unlock at 200 K Coins. Treat those as a guide and confirm the price in the app before paying.

Does Kuki AI use my chats?

Yes. Its policies say messages you send to Kuki are used to improve Kuki's responses and the quality of your chat experience. Keep personal details out of the conversation, and delete your account when you stop using it.
