And the rules that are on file are clear. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content. That applies whichever door you walk in through, and whichever plan you're on. Here is what the official record does show about the app:

• Two paid tiers, (c.ai) lite and c.ai+, which sell speed, fewer ads and memory pins
• Voice, images, custom characters and group chat as listed features
• No public API, so no official side door for developers either

Why does the Beta question keep coming up? My guess is that people remember old posts or older versions of the site and assume something is still tucked away. I can't confirm any of that history from the records, so I won't. What matters tonight is the policy as it stands now, and it reads the same on every platform.

My take: when an app keeps its policy this strict across every plan, there is no quiet corner where it works differently. I'd rather you hear that in the first paragraph than find it out three hours into a story.

The apps side by side, right after this section, set Character AI next to companion apps whose policies do allow adult content. Look at the content level first and the price second. That order saves money.

Not one of those plan descriptions mentions a different content level. The policy is the same for a free user and for someone on the annual plan. If a subscription were your key to a looser Character AI, you'd be paying for a door that stays shut, with a renewal that keeps going until you cancel.

The annual plan is the worst place to learn this: $94.99 up front, and you won't see it back unless a law forces a refund.

For a Character AI fan, I'd look at SpicyChat first. It feels closest in spirit: roleplay at the centre, custom characters, group chat, and a free plan with no published message cap. Nomi AI is my pick if you care more about one companion who remembers you than about browsing hundreds of characters.

Two catches worth knowing. Other reviewers report that Nomi AI's image generation often refuses adult requests, so its policy is more generous in chat than in pictures. And SpicyChat's free plan has no images or voice at all, so the free experience is text only.

The paid-only pair asks for more commitment. Candy AI's free start is tiny, a handful of messages, so you'll know quickly whether you like it, but you won't get far without paying. GirlfriendGPT gives 20 bonus messages that don't expire and adds 10 more for each day you log in, enough to judge the chat before spending.

If discretion on your bank statement matters to you, note the billing names too: SpicyChat bills as NDAI.CHAT and GirlfriendGPT as NDAI.CC. Neither says anything about companions, which I think most people will appreciate.

The help centre adds that it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so I'd treat the 55 as a number that may change.

After that, you're into the paid plans. Standard Monthly is $19.99, covering messages without limit, pictures and video, plus 1,000 dreamcoins each month. Standard Annual is $119.88, or $9.99 monthly. Deluxe Monthly is $59.99, and Deluxe Annual is $359.88 ($29.99 a month), bringing 5,000 dreamcoins, 50 videos and 100 voice-call minutes.

Put next to Character AI, the gap is obvious. For $9.99 a month, c.ai+ sells a smoother SFW experience. OurDream AI's entry plan costs twice that and sells a different product: adult content, pictures and video, with a coin balance for the extras. Neither is a rip-off. They're simply built for different people.

What bothers me a little is the coin meter. Other reviewers report that a voice call on OurDream AI eats through coins quickly, partly because it made pictures mid-call that the reviewer never requested. If you're moving over from a flat-price app, that kind of cost is new, and it's worth watching your balance in the first month.

My advice for anyone leaving Character AI over its content policy: start with a free plan somewhere, pay for one month only, and learn the cancel path before your first renewal. On OurDream AI you cancel from your profile page, and the paid time you already have still runs out in full.

Trying to get around Character AI's content rules breaks its terms. Breaking the terms can get an account banned. And a ban doesn't just end the chat you were trying to change. Losing an account means losing access to everything you built on it.

That's a steep price for a trick that, even when it seems to work, runs against a policy the company can enforce at any moment.

There's also a simpler problem: the policy hasn't changed. A workaround doesn't turn Character AI into an adult app. It turns your chats into a game of cat and mouse with a filter that exists on purpose, and the company sets the rules of that game.

One more practical point. Tricks shared online are written by people who carry none of your risk. If a method goes wrong, the person who posted it loses nothing, and you lose the account.

My opinion, and it is only an opinion, is that consistency is the kind thing here. An app that bent its rules for one version or one price tier would confuse people and invite exactly the rule-bending that gets accounts closed. At least with Character AI, you can plan around a rule that doesn't move.

Group chat deserves a mention of its own. Among the apps on this page, only some list it at all: SpicyChat and OurDream AI do, Nomi AI keeps it for paying members, and Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT don't list it. On Character AI it's a standard feature, and for people who like writing scenes with several characters, that alone is a good reason to stay.

Other reviewers report strong recall of buried details, though the same reports mention the AI sometimes invents plausible extras with equal confidence. That mix sounds right for a big, busy character app: impressive on a good day, a little unreliable on a long one. For SFW roleplay or just talking to a favourite character, I'd still point a friend here first.

So my verdict is a split one. For adult content, Character AI Beta is the wrong address, whatever you call it. For everything else, it's a strong free app with a fair upgrade at $9.99 a month.

Keep both in your pocket if you like: Character AI for stories, and an app like SpicyChat or Nomi AI for the chats Character AI doesn't allow.
