How does Character AI make money? Plainly answered

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

How does Character AI make money, in short?

From what the official pages show, Character AI, run by Character Technologies, Inc., has two visible sources of income: advertising on the free plan and paid subscriptions. That's the whole public picture. No revenue figures are published, so I won't guess at how the split looks, but the structure itself is easy to read.

Here is what you can actually pay for, or see, as a user:

  • Ads on the free plan, where messaging is uncapped but ads run in full and slow mode appears when traffic peaks
  • (c.ai) lite for $4.99 monthly, trimming the ads and adding a daily ration of premium chat styles
  • c.ai+ for $9.99 monthly, which drops both the ads and slow mode
  • c.ai+ Annual for $94.99, or about $7.92 per month

Just as telling is what is missing. Character AI offers no public API, so it isn't selling access to its models to developers through the app. It has no adult content tier either, which many rival apps use as their main paid hook. And there are no coins or tokens on the plans listed, which I find refreshing.

My take: this is one of the simplest money models among companion apps. The free plan is the shop window, ads pay for part of it, and the subscription sells comfort: speed, memory pins and no interruptions. I'd rather have that than an app that counts every single message.

If you're wondering what that means for your conversations, the honest answer is that I have no Character AI data policy on record here to quote you. If you'd like to tidy up what you've written in the meantime, I explain deleting Character AI chats in a separate help page.

The table right after this section sets Character AI next to other companion apps, so you can compare how each one charges and what its free start gives you.

App Free option Lowest monthly cost Allowed
Character AI Yes $4.99 Unconfirmed
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted
GirlfriendGPT Yes $12.00 Mature chat, paid plans
SpicyChat Yes $5.00 Mature chat permitted

Why is Character AI free, and what's the catch?

Character AI's official FAQ still promises that anyone can message for free, with no limit. That is rare in this space. The catch is not a message cap but friction: full ads, slow mode when the service is busy, and limited daily features.

That friction is the business model working as designed. A free user who hits slow mode during a busy evening is the most likely person to consider paying. I don't mind that at all. It is a fair trade next to apps that allow five messages before a paywall appears. You get the whole core product free; you pay to make it smoother.

Where I'd be careful is the sense that you "need" to upgrade. You don't. If you chat now and then, the free plan is enough, and the ads are the price.

What does a c.ai+ subscription actually sell you?

The paid tiers sell comfort and depth, not new content. Here is what c.ai+ lists on its plan page:

  • No ads at all
  • No slow mode, so replies keep coming at busy times
  • Premium chat styles without a cap, plus the top daily limits
  • Memory pins, 30 of them, for facts you want a character to keep
  • Premium support

(c.ai) lite, priced at $4.99, sits in the middle: fewer ads, a daily quota of premium chat styles, 30 memory pins and chat customization. It's a sensible step if the ads bother you but you don't want the full price.

My view on value: $9.99 for c.ai+ is a fair price if you open the app most days. The annual plan at $94.99 saves you money against paying monthly, and the pricing page lists it as 21% off. I'd only buy the year once a month or two have convinced you.

There are no refunds beyond what the law demands, so a year you didn't want is an expensive mistake.

What you won't get from any paid tier is a change in the content policy. The rules are the same for everyone, which I think is honest. How does Character AI's money model compare with other companion apps?

Seen side by side, Character AI is unusual. Most companion apps on this site charge more, and many stack a coin system on top of the plan. Here is how the others make their money, in their own words:

  • OurDream AI sells subscriptions from $19.99 a month and uses dreamcoins, where anyone without a subscription spends 1 Dreamcoin on each message
  • Candy AI sells plans from €13.99 a month, with 100 tokens a month included and adult content on paid plans
  • Nomi AI sells a $15.99 monthly Standard Plan alongside a permanent ad-free free plan capped at 50 daily messages
  • GirlfriendGPT sells tiers from $15 a month up to $50, with coins and message counts per tier
  • SpicyChat sells tiers from $5.95 a month and keeps unlimited text chat free with ads

Two patterns jump out for me. First, adult content is a big part of what rivals sell, while Character AI deliberately leaves it out. Second, currencies like coins, tokens and dreamcoins let an app charge again after the subscription, for images, video or extra messages. Character AI's listed plans don't do that.

That makes Character AI one of the more predictable apps to pay for. If you subscribe to c.ai+, you know what the month costs. With a coin-based app, what a month really costs swings with your use of images, video or voice.

I'm not saying coins are bad. They can suit someone who wants lots of images one month and none the next. But if you like knowing your total before the month starts, Character AI's approach is kinder to your budget.

The big trade-off is content. If you want romance that goes further than Character AI allows, you'll pay more elsewhere, and often in two layers: subscription plus currency. I'd factor both into the real cost before switching, and I'd add them up for a typical month, not just the headline price.

For a ranked list of apps that cover what Character AI doesn't, with their prices and free starts, my Character AI alternatives list is the place to compare. The box right below sums up OurDream AI, the most coin-heavy app in this group.

What does a coin-based app like OurDream AI charge by comparison?

OurDream AI, summed up in the box above, shows the other way to make money from companion chat. Sign-up and browsing are free, and you start with 55 Dreamcoins. Without a subscription, each message then costs 1 Dreamcoin, so the free start covers 55 messages.

Standard Monthly is $19.99 for unlimited messages, images, video and 1,000 dreamcoins a month. Standard Annual costs $119.88, which is $9.99 per month. At the top sits Deluxe Annual: $359.88 (so $29.99 per month) for 5,000 dreamcoins monthly, 50 videos and 100 minutes of voice calling. Deluxe Monthly is $59.99.

Compare that with Character AI. For the price of one month of OurDream AI's Standard Monthly, you could pay for two months of c.ai+ with a cent to spare. Character AI charges less, as far as the prices show, but it also offers much less of what OurDream AI sells: adult content, pictures and video, and coins to spend on them.

My read is that the two companies are betting on different people. Character AI bets on a huge free audience, a slice of which pays a modest monthly fee. OurDream AI bets on fewer users who pay more for a richer, adult-oriented product, with coins to cover heavy use.

Other reviewers report that OurDream AI's voice calls drain coins fast, which is exactly the risk of a currency model. Nothing like that applies to c.ai+, where the price is the price. That predictability is worth something, especially if you've ever been surprised by a bill at the end of a month.

For you, the practical question is simple: what do you want to pay for? If it is speed and fewer ads for SFW character chat, Character AI is the cheaper and calmer option. If it is adult content with images and video, OurDream AI's higher price buys things Character AI will never sell.

Either way, I'd start free, pay monthly first, and learn the cancel steps before you subscribe. If you want those steps for a specific app, my help guides for companion apps cover billing, cancelling and deleting data app by app.

Can you make money on Character AI as a creator?

Not from anything on record. How to make a Character AI bot is the free part: with the Character Creation tools you design custom chatbots with their own personalities, backstories and even voices. But nothing in the official pages describes a way for users or creators to earn from their characters, like a revenue share or tips.

If you're asking whether you can make money from Character AI by building popular bots, the honest answer right now is no known route.

That tells you something about the business model, too. My guess is that the characters people build keep the free audience coming back, and that audience makes ads and subscriptions work. For now, making your own Character AI characters is a hobby, not an income.

If you want to learn how to make your own Character AI characters anyway, custom characters and group chat are both listed features, and paid plans add memory pins. The records do not describe how to make a persona on Character AI, so I won't guess at those steps.

Who is the creator of Character AI, and does it matter for your wallet?

The company behind Character AI is Character Technologies, Inc. It's the company that will charge your card if you subscribe. Its billing terms are straightforward: it automatically charges your payment method on each agreed-upon renewal until you cancel, and money you pay stays paid unless the law says otherwise.

Auto-renewal plus no refunds means you should cancel with a few days in hand rather than on renewal day itself. Anything bought in Apple's or Google's store is refunded by that store under its own rules, and web purchases go through Stripe.

One snag is worth knowing. A published review tells of a credit card and a debit card that kept failing at the c.ai+ checkout for three weeks, though both were fine at other shops, and support just recommended trying a different card. If you hit that, buying in the Apple or Google store is the obvious fallback.

If you'd like to know how I weigh billing rules, refunds and free plans when I score an app, read about the way apps are reviewed on this site. Clear rules score better than generous promises.

Is paying for c.ai+ worth it, and how do you make Character AI remember?

This is where the money question gets personal. A lot of people look at c.ai+ while searching how to make Character AI remember them better. The paid plans do address that: both (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ include 30 memory pins, so you can pin the facts you want a character to keep.

Other reviewers report a mixed picture on memory, though. They describe strong recall of buried facts, but also invented details stated with the same confidence, and long chats that lost a promise from just ten messages back, Auto Memories or not. My take: memory pins help, but they aren't magic, so pin only the facts that matter most.

A name, a running joke, the setting of a long story: those are the kinds of details worth a pin, while passing remarks can stay in the chat itself.

Is paying worth it, then? For daily users fed up with ads and slow mode, yes; for occasional chatters, no. The monthly price of $9.99 is modest, and it buys a noticeably calmer experience with fewer breaks mid-story. If you're unsure, (c.ai) lite for $4.99 is a gentle middle step that includes the same 30 memory pins.

Try one month, see whether the pins change how your stories feel, and only then decide on c.ai+.

Why doesn't Character AI make money from adult content?

Because its policy allows none, on any plan. That is a deliberate choice, and it shapes the whole business. Many rival apps make adult content their main paid feature. Character AI instead sells speed, memory pins and no ads to a broad audience that uses it for SFW roleplay.

My read, and it is only my read, is that keeping content SFW keeps Character AI listed in Apple's and Google's stores for a very wide audience, and keeps the free plan broad enough to act as its shop window. That's a reasonable bet, even if it disappoints some adults.

If that's you, don't buy c.ai+ hoping it changes things. It won't come with the subscription. My page on Character AI and NSFW content covers the policy in detail, why workarounds are a bad idea for your account, and which apps allow adult content instead.

Common questions

How does Character AI make money if it's free?

Through ads on the free plan and paid subscriptions. Free users can message without limit but see full ads and hit slow mode when it's busy. (c.ai) lite ($4.99 monthly) cuts back the ads, and c.ai+ ($9.99 monthly or $94.99 yearly) removes ads and slow mode and adds unlimited premium chat styles and 30 memory pins.

Can you make money from Character AI by creating characters?

Not that anything official describes. Creating characters is free, but no revenue share, tips or payout for creators is described in the official pages. Building characters on Character AI is a hobby rather than an income, as far as the published facts go.

Who is the creator of Character AI?

Character AI is run by Character Technologies, Inc. That is the company behind the app and the one that charges your card for c.ai+ or (c.ai) lite. The app runs on web, iOS and Android.

How to make a GC in Character AI?

GC means group chat, and it is a listed Character AI feature. Per the official blog, one room can hold several AI Characters together with real people. At launch it was stated as mobile-app only, on iOS and Android, with web support planned.

Whether you can create one on the web today is not confirmed in the records, so the phone app is the safe place to start one.

Is c.ai+ worth the money?

For daily users, I think so. For $9.99 a month you lose the ads and slow mode and get unlimited premium chat styles, the highest daily limits and 30 memory pins. Occasional users are fine on the free plan. Refunds only happen where the law requires them, so start monthly.

Can I get a refund for c.ai+?

Usually not. Character AI only refunds where the law obliges it to. For a purchase made through Apple or Google, the store decides under its own policy. To avoid another charge, cancel several days ahead of renewal.

Can Character AI creators see your chats?

The records do not answer that either way, so I won't claim they can or cannot. What they do show is that Character AI itself says it keeps some of what you share to train and improve its AI models, with an opt-out offered to people in the UK and the EEA. My advice is simple: treat any chat with a public character as something you would not mind others reading, and keep private details out.
