Gening AI Review: Ten Days on Free Credits

Gening AI is a character chat and roleplay site, launched in 2024, that pairs a library of 100,000+ characters with image tools, all paid for from one shared pool of credits. You'll find it on iOS and in the browser, in 8 interface languages. My quick take: the billing model is the most reader-friendly part of the site, and guest mode is the riskiest.

A secondary source from 2026-08-18 reports 50 and notes the figure has moved anywhere from 20 to 50 over time.

At 2 credits per message, 20 or 30 credits cover 10 or 15 messages a day if you spend them only on chat. I'd still call that a real free tier, just one sized for a day pass rather than an evening-long story. Other reviewers report that the credits run out quickly once you mix chat and images, which fits the maths.

The site describes its chat as having "extended memory retention", but no depth or duration is stated, and that promise meant nothing to a guest session that kept nothing. The outside view is cautious too. Other reviewers describe chat that shines in quick sessions and starts repeating itself in long roleplays, somewhere around 30-50 messages, with earlier plot points only vaguely recalled across sessions.

My view: Gening AI roleplay suits short, varied scenes better than one slow-burn story. The credit model agrees, because every message costs 2 credits whether it moves your plot forward or not.

The character side is broad. The library lists 100,000+ characters, and the create page offers name, avatar, style, visibility and SFW or NSFW settings. I like that it makes no assumptions about you: a Gening AI gf, a Gening AI boyfriend or someone who fits neither label is simply a matter of how you fill in the page. There are no gender presets on record, so I can't promise a detailed appearance builder.

The age rule is 18+, confirmed by clicking "I'm 18 or older" in a self-declaration dialog. No document check is described. Plenty of apps in this field work the same way, and the terms spell the rule out clearly.

Media is less tidy. Image and video tools now link out to a separate site, vidguru.ai, with a notice that the image generator has moved up to Vidguru. Images cost 3 credits on Standard and 20 on Advanced, with Advanced for subscribers.

Outside write-ups find the anime-style pictures stronger than the realistic ones, and say moderation stops adult image prompts more often than it stops text.

Voice is unclear. The character screen shows a "Voice Chat" option, and the site has an AI voice generator and a voice cloning tool, but whether any of that is a live call is not stated. One secondary source states that the site has no real-time calling. I'd assume there isn't one until the site says otherwise.

My take: treat it as a text-first Gening AI character chat with the odd image, and set the content level on each Gening AI character before you start. If you want a companion that leans more on romance than on a big library, my AI girlfriend app rankings are the better starting point.

The funny comparison is Candy AI, whose 12-Month Plan is €47.88, or €3.99 a month. Same digits, different currency and a very different deal. Candy AI renews automatically and includes unlimited text messages, while Gening AI never renews and draws credits for every message.

Nomi AI at $15.99 a month and OurDream AI at $19.99 a month both cost more for a month, but their paid chat is unlimited.

My view: if you chat every night, an unlimited plan elsewhere is probably the better value. If you chat now and then and hate recurring charges, Gening AI's model is cleaner than anything else on this page.

If you buy, the 1 Month pack at $12.99 is the safe test: 2,000 credits, skip the queue, no ads and the AI tools, with nothing renewing afterwards. The 12 Months pack at $47.88 gives 12 times the credits for less than 4 times the price, but the credits expire in 1 year and refunds are very limited. The vidguru point is the one I'd underline. When a service sends you to a partner site for media, read that site's terms before you pay for anything there. If you want image generation inside the same app and don't mind a renewing plan, Candy AI, the subscription-style option, is the comparison I'd make. It renews automatically, which Gening AI never does, so set a reminder if you go that way.

The terms do let you close your account whenever you like, and they point paid subscription users to the Refund Policy. The site code also contains a Stripe cancel-subscription endpoint, most likely left over from older recurring plans. I wouldn't read much into either. What matters is that nothing renews unless you choose to buy again.

Refunds are the weak side. The Refund Policy rules out a refund once your Login details have been used on the Portal. It also says no refunds or credits are given for partial-month Membership periods. When a refund does happen, the money lands on the method you paid with inside ten days. In plain words: once you start using what you bought, assume the money is spent.

That makes the 1 Month pack the smart first purchase. It caps what you can lose at $12.99, and it never turns into a second charge. The name that appears on a card statement is not on record, so if discreet billing matters to you, that question stays open, and I'd rather say so than guess.

What the policy leaves out is whether your chats help train AI models. There is no statement either way. For an app where people write personal and mature roleplay, I want that answered, and until it is, I'd keep real names, places and identifying details out of your stories.

Guest mode cuts both ways. It kept nothing I could get back, and it also lets you try characters without creating an account first. The media tools add another layer: images and video run through vidguru.ai, so anything you type there goes to that service under its own terms.

So where does that leave you? For casual use with a small one-time purchase, I'd call it reasonable. For your most personal stories, I'd wait until the training question and the company details are clearer. What bothers me most is the guest mode that lost my best conversation of the winter, followed by the missing company name. Skip Gening AI if you want long stories with strong memory, live voice calls or a clear word on whether chats train its models. Start as a guest, but leave nothing there you'd miss.

• Voice calls: Nomi AI's Standard plan includes them, and Candy AI lists them too.

The trade-off is renewal. Candy AI renews automatically, and Nomi AI renews unless you cancel before the period ends. Gening AI is the only app on this page that never charges you again by itself, and for a reader with a drawer full of forgotten subscriptions, that can outweigh everything above.

If you'd rather never count messages, a flat plan elsewhere is calmer, provided a calendar reminder goes in ahead of every renewal.
