Is Character AI down right now, or just slow?

The status box at the top shows our own check of Character AI, run twice a day. Read the time of the last check first, as an old result can be out of date. Here I help you tell a real outage apart from the two things that most often look like one.

The first is built into the free plan: at high load, Character AI switches free users to a "slow mode" with reduced response speed. The second sits on your side of the screen.

Here is the order I'd go through before deciding the whole service is down:

  • Open Character AI on a second platform, since it runs on web, iOS and Android
  • Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round
  • Notice whether replies are late or missing, because late usually means busy hours
  • Wait a few minutes, then send one short message instead of ten
  • If nothing loads anywhere, the fault is most likely on Character AI's end

My take: a free account at a busy hour can feel broken while everything is working as designed. I'd rather you know that than lose an evening to the refresh button. It's annoying, sure, but a slow reply on its own is no sign that anything is wrong with your account or with the characters you built.

One thing I'd hold off on during a wobble is account housekeeping. If you planned a tidy-up, such as removing old Character AI conversations, wait until the app behaves again, so you can see clearly what actually went through and what didn't. Deleting things during a glitch is how people end up unsure what's gone.

The apps side by side, right after this section, put Character AI next to other companion apps with their prices and free starts. I'd skim it now, while nothing is urgent, so you already know your backup before the next busy evening.

App Free option Lowest monthly cost Allowed
Character AI Yes $4.99 Unconfirmed
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted

SpicyChat Yes $5.00 Mature chat permitted

What does slow mode tell you about Character AI's status?

Slow mode is the closest thing to a status signal that free users get. The official plan list says the free tier uses it at high load, so replies come more slowly when lots of people are online at once. The same plan shows full ads and limited daily features, but it keeps the promise of free and unlimited messaging.

So if Character AI feels sluggish in the evening but still answers, my reading is simple: it's busy, not broken. That's frustrating, especially when you're mid-story. It's also a fair trade for a free plan with no published message cap, which is rarer than it should be among companion apps. Most rivals would simply stop you after a set number of messages.

Does paying for c.ai+ fix a busy Character AI?

Partly. No subscription keeps a server up during a genuine outage, but paying does change how busy hours feel. Here is what the paid tiers list that touches speed and reliability:

  • c.ai+ for $9.99 monthly: slow mode and ads are gone, and daily limits are the highest
  • c.ai+ also names premium support, useful when you need an answer from the company
  • (c.ai) lite, from $4.99 a month: fewer ads plus a daily quota of premium chat-style messages
  • c.ai+ Annual at $94.99 a year, which comes to $7.92 a month

Notice that only c.ai+ names "no slow mode". The lite plan doesn't, so I wouldn't buy lite hoping to dodge busy-hour delays. If slow evenings are your main complaint, c.ai+ monthly is the one plan that answers it directly.

My advice is one month before any annual plan. Renewals are automatic, and refunds only happen where the law demands them, so a year bought in frustration after one bad night is a poor deal. If the slowdowns fade over a few weeks, you've spent $9.99 and can cancel before the next charge.

Want the wider picture beyond speed? My in-depth Character AI review covers memory, voices and characters, and where the app falls short. The feature table right below compares what each app includes, which is handy if you're weighing a switch rather than an upgrade.

Where can you chat when Character AI is having a bad day?

If Character AI is down, or slow mode is dragging out your evening, a backup app with a free start is the calm fix. You don't need to move for good. You only need somewhere pleasant to go for an hour while the main app catches its breath.

These are the apps on file with a free way in, and what that start gives you:

  • SpicyChat: no cap on text chat with the Default model, paid for with ads and the odd queue, on the web
  • Nomi AI: a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, no ads, on web, iOS and Android
  • OurDream AI: free sign-up with 55 Dreamcoins to start, at 1 Dreamcoin per message, on the web
  • GirlfriendGPT: a one-off 20 bonus messages that never expire, and Daily Login tops you up by 10 each day
  • Candy AI: a very small free allowance of a few messages and images, on the web

My pick for a stand-in is Nomi AI, mostly for convenience. It runs on the same three platforms as Character AI, so it's easy to keep ready on your phone, and its free plan has no ads. SpicyChat is my second choice: its free chat has no published cap, though its own waiting lines mean it can be busy too.

One difference before you jump: most of these apps allow adult content, while Character AI does not. For a quick stand-in chat that barely matters, but it does change the tone of their character libraries, so browse with that in mind. Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT keep adult content to paid plans.

A word on free starts that run on a count. OurDream AI's 55 Dreamcoins cover 55 messages, yet its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so treat that number as one that may change. GirlfriendGPT's bonus messages work the same way: fine for an evening, not for a month.

Is there an official Character AI status page?

Yes. Character AI runs an official status page at characteraistatus.statuspage.io, where the team posts incidents and maintenance. Our Character AI status check reads what that page reports twice a day and shows it next to our own result, so you can see both in one place.

That leaves the signs you can read yourself, and they're more useful than they sound. If the website and the phone app both fail on two different connections, the problem is almost certainly with Character AI. If one platform works and the other doesn't, I'd suspect that one app or your device first. If replies arrive but crawl, you're most likely looking at slow mode on the free plan.

What I'd ignore: confident posts claiming a fix is coming "within the hour", or that some feature has been switched off for good. Without an official statement, those are guesses. Guesses travel fast whenever an app this popular stalls, and they tend to be wrong in both directions.

Support is the other piece. c.ai+ lists premium support among its benefits, so paying members appear to get a better line to the company. Free users have no such promise on file, which is fair enough for a plan that costs nothing. If you're free and something looks wrong with your account, rather than the whole service, patience plus the help centre is your realistic route.

One practical tip about money during an outage. If you decide to cancel c.ai+ because the app keeps failing you, you don't need the chat screen to work. Web subscribers go to Settings, then Account, then Manage, which leads to the Customer Portal, where they enter their account email.

If you bought through the App Store or Google Play instead, refunds for those purchases go through Apple or Google.

I also think it's worth separating a bad week from a bad app. A service this size will have slow evenings; that alone isn't a reason to leave. Repeated failures on every platform, plus no word from the company, would be.

For billing, cancelling and privacy questions app by app, my help section collects every guide on this site in one place.

Is it an outage, or is your payment being declined?

Not every Character AI problem is a server problem. One reviewer describes c.ai+ checkout turning down a credit card and a debit card, again and again for three weeks, even though both cards went through on ten other sites. Support's only advice was to use another card.

That's one account, so I wouldn't call it a known fault, and I don't want to scare you off paying. It does show how a failed payment can look exactly like a broken app.

If your upgrade won't go through, don't keep retrying the same card for days. Buying through the App Store or Google Play is a different route, and the help centre notes that refunds for those purchases go through Apple or Google. And if nothing works, remember the free plan still gives you unlimited messaging while you sort it out.

Why do voice replies lag even when Character AI is up?

Voice is where a working service can still feel off. Other reviewers find some Character AI voices pleasantly convincing and others as flat as a tired audiobook reader, with lag and an emotional tone that can miss. So a pause before a voice reply is not, by itself, a sign that Character AI is down.

My quick test for you is text first. If text replies arrive normally but voice drags, the service is up and voice is simply the slower part. If text fails too, you're back to the outage checklist near the top of this page, starting with a second platform.

The same goes for memory slips. Other reviewers report long chats getting messy, where a character loses track of something it promised only ten messages before, even with Auto Memories switched on. That can feel like a glitch after an outage, but it's a known limit of long chats, not a status problem. The paid plans offer memory pins for exactly this, and even those have limits.

I weigh single-account reports like the card story carefully: one person's bad week is worth knowing, not worth panicking over. If you're curious how much weight a report gets here, how apps are reviewed on this site explains it.

Is a blocked reply a sign that Character AI is down?

No. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content, and that holds on the free plan, on (c.ai) lite and on c.ai+. When a chat hits that limit, you're seeing the rules at work, not a server fault. Refreshing won't change it, and neither will waiting for the service to "come back".

I mention this because it's an easy mix-up, and waiting won't fix it. A chat that suddenly stops going where you wanted can feel like a bug, especially late at night when the app is also in slow mode. It isn't. The policy is the same on every platform and every plan, and paying for c.ai+ doesn't change it.

If that limit is the real reason you're frustrated, the question isn't the app's status at all. It's whether Character AI is the right app for you, and I answer that honestly in whether Character AI will allow NSFW.

When should you wait, and when should you switch apps?

Here's my rule of thumb, from calmest to most drastic. If replies are slow but arriving, wait: that's slow mode, and it passes when the rush does. If one platform fails, try the other two, because web, iOS and Android don't always stumble together.

If nothing loads anywhere for a long stretch, open your backup app for the evening and come back tomorrow.

What I wouldn't do is buy or cancel anything in the heat of the moment. Money decisions made at midnight in a bad mood rarely age well. Upgrading to c.ai+ at $9.99 fixes busy-hour delays, not outages. Cancelling a plan you're otherwise happy with over one bad night throws away something that works most of the time. Give it a day before you decide anything that costs money.

If outages keep happening and you rely on the app daily, then yes, keep a second app ready. Think of it like a spare umbrella: cheap to own, and you're glad of it on the wrong night. Nomi AI and SpicyChat both have free plans, so having one waiting costs you nothing, and switching for an evening doesn't mean leaving Character AI for good.

Common questions

Is Character AI down right now?

Look at the status box at the top of this page first; it shows our last check (twice a day) and its time. Then open Character AI on a second platform and a second connection. If it fails on web, iOS and Android alike, the problem is on Character AI's side.

If replies arrive but slowly, it is most likely slow mode, which the free plan uses at high load.

Why is Character AI so slow tonight?

The free plan uses slow mode at high load, which reduces response speed when many people are online. The free plan also shows full ads and limited daily features, but messaging stays unlimited. Busy evenings are the usual reason, and speed normally returns once the rush passes.

Does c.ai+ get rid of slow mode?

Yes. The $9.99-a-month c.ai+ plan lists no slow mode, no ads, the highest daily limits and premium support. (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month does not list the removal of slow mode, so it is not the plan for busy-hour delays. c.ai+ does not prevent a genuine outage.

Where can I see whether Character AI is working?

Character AI has an official status page at characteraistatus.statuspage.io, and our status check shows what it reports. The practical signs are yours to read too: whether the app loads on another platform, whether text replies arrive, and whether they are merely slow. Treat unofficial claims about fixes as guesses.

Can I cancel c.ai+ if Character AI keeps failing?

Yes. Web subscribers go to Settings, Account, Manage to reach the Customer Portal and enter their account email. Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases go through Apple or Google. Otherwise Character AI keeps payments, unless a law requires a refund.

What can I use while Character AI is down?

Any app with a free start works as a stand-in. Nomi AI has a free plan of 50 messages a day with no ads on web, iOS and Android. SpicyChat offers unlimited free text chat on the web, with ads and possible waiting lines.
