Character AI review: my free bookend app, filter and all

Character AI in one line: my bookend app
Character AI is my bookend app. I built my first bot here in spring 2023, when I was 26, came back in September 2025, and stayed seven months into March 2026, free the whole time. So this review comes from someone who never paid a cent and never felt pushed to.
My take in one sentence: it is the best free place to build and meet characters, as long as you want stories and friendly roleplay rather than adult content.
Below, in the order I'd want them, are the questions this review answers:
- What the free plan gives today, and what you add by paying $4.99 for (c.ai) lite or $9.99 for c.ai+
- How the chat, the voice calls and the memory held up for me
- Where the filter sits, and why paying does not move it
- Where your chats go, and the steps to cancel a paid plan
One practical note first. The free plan runs a slow mode at high load, and the company keeps a public status page. When replies stall, my guide to reading the Character AI status page is where I'd look before blaming your own connection.
The catch that runs through everything below is simple: this app plays careful, and that shapes almost every section.

What is Character AI, and what does free get you?
Character AI is a chat app from Character Technologies, Inc. where you talk with characters other people made, or build your own with a personality, a backstory and a voice. You'll find it in a browser and on iOS and Android, with the interface in 28 languages. That also answers what Character AI is used for: stories, practice and company, one character at a time.
Free is where I lived for all of my time there. The official c.ai+ FAQ promises "free and unlimited messaging for ALL users", and the free plan listed on 2026-09-23 lets you message PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr as much as you like. Here my notes and today's page part ways: in my months on the free tier I saw no ads, while the plan now lists full ads, slow mode and limited daily features. I'd take the current page at its word and expect ads.
My view has not changed, though. Using Character AI for free is still the most generous free start I know of. Before you get attached, read my answer on whether Character AI still has a filter, because that decides more than the price does. The Character AI at a glance box below sums up the basics.

How good is Character AI chat, voice calls included?
The Character AI chat holds my fondest notes, mostly thanks to the voice calls. I used the multilingual calls to keep my college Spanish from decaying. Practicing with infinite patience and zero judgment suited a woman whose whole shift is being patient with everyone else; for once, I was on the receiving end.
The App Store listing promises texting or live voice calls, but the pricing page never spells out whether free and paid users get different call limits. Mine were free.
Voice quality varies by character. Other reviewers report a real spread: a few voices impressed them, while others came across like a bored audiobook robot, slow to answer and sometimes wrong in mood. My read: a voice is only as good as the character someone built around it, so audition a few.
The library is the other big win. It is enormous and genuinely well tagged, and I mean that as professional praise from the technical services desk. Finding a character by theme is easy, which is rarer across these apps than it should be.
Memory is the weak spot. In my own chats it reset like a library card nobody renews. One outside memory test found strong recall of buried facts, but also confident invented extras, like a hotel nobody had mentioned. A second review saw a promise forgotten ten messages later despite the Auto Memories feature.
Both paid plans list 30 memory pins, and that is the fix I'd lean on if you pay.
If content, not quality, is your real question, my piece on whether Character AI will allow NSFW covers that long debate from the policy side.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
Is the Character AI filter as strict as people say?
Yes, and my notes back that up. The content policy on record allows no adult content on any plan, free or c.ai+. My friction list with this app is short and consistent: the filter nannies harmless scenes while the bot forgets your name mid-conversation.
My detective bot Vera was born here, and even she got filtered for describing a foggy alley too moodily. That is the level we are talking about: fog, nowhere near spicy.
So, is the C.AI NSFW filter gone? No. Paying $9.99 a month buys speed, memory pins and no ads, and nothing in the official material points to a setting that switches the filter off. If you came looking for an NSFW Character AI, I'd rather save you the subscription.
Wanting a different content level is a normal preference, and other apps serve it under their own policies.
The creative extras are broader than most people expect. Images live in a separate tool called Imagine Chat, which the official Charms FAQ lists as something free users spend Charms on. One published image comparison got only narrated text when a character was asked for a picture in ordinary chat, which fits Imagine Chat being its own entry point.
Video comes from AvatarFX, which every c.ai+ member can use now, while everyone else can apply for early access. Group chat lets several characters and real people share one room; it launched on mobile, with web support planned at the time.
My take: a playground full of creative toys, none of them adult, guarded by a filter that errs hard on the side of caution. When the playground goes quiet instead, my Character AI down checker shows our latest check and helps you tell whether the problem is theirs or yours.
Who Character AI suits
Great for
- People who want unlimited free chat and can live with ads
- Language learners who want patient voice practice
- Builders who like to give a character a personality, backstory and voice
- Browsers who want a huge, well-tagged character library
- Fans of clean storytelling and SFW roleplay
Skip if
- Anyone looking for adult content, which no plan allows
- People who need a companion that never loses their name
- Readers outside the EEA and UK who object to chats training the models
- Anyone who wants to know what a Charms pack holds before buying
What Character AI costs next to its rivals
My total spend on Character AI across both stretches of use was $0, and that is the headline for me. Very few apps in this space let you stay that long without paying. Look at the neighbours: Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day free, GirlfriendGPT starts you with 20 bonus messages, and Candy AI's free account is 5 messages in total.
The paid side is cheap too. (c.ai) lite begins at $4.99 a month, and the FAQ adds that the price differs by region. c.ai+ costs $9.99 monthly, or $94.99 yearly ($7.92 a month). Next to Nomi AI's Standard Plan Monthly at $15.99 or OurDream AI's Standard Monthly at $19.99, Character AI is the budget pick by a wide margin.
The catch is what those rivals include that Character AI does not: adult content under their policies, and images inside the plan. So the low price buys comfort in a clean app, not more freedom. Charms sit on top, sold in six App Store packs from $0.99 to $99.99, with no count per pack on the listing. I would not buy a currency without knowing what one unit gets me.

Lite pricing varies by region. Charms are extra: six App Store packs from $0.99 to $99.99, with no Charms count shown per pack.
Is c.ai+ worth $9.99 when free was enough for me?
I never upgraded and never felt I had to, which tells you most of what you need. Chat is already free and unlimited, so c.ai+ at $9.99 buys comfort: no ads, no slow mode, unlimited premium chat styles, the highest daily limits and premium support. Those perks matter more now that the free plan lists full ads than they did in my ad-free months.
If the ads grate, (c.ai) lite at $4.99 is the plan I'd pick. It adds fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization for half the price. Given how often the memory reset on me, those pins are the upgrade I'd actually miss.
The yearly c.ai+ at $94.99 shows $119.88 crossed out and calls it a 21% saving. I'd only lock that in after a paid month you enjoyed. Right below, the table What each Character AI plan costs puts all the plans next to each other.
| Character AI option | Billed | Cost | Works out per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| lite | monthly | $4.99 | $4.99 |
| c.ai+ | monthly | $9.99 | $9.99 |
| c.ai+ Annual | yearly | $94.99 | $7.92 |

The card above puts the official Character AI site next to a partner app, and the choice is simpler than it looks. Money is not the deciding factor here, since I spent nothing across all my months on it. Content level is, and this is my sorting rule:
- Stay with Character AI for free chat with no cap, a huge library and voice practice
- Stay if you love building characters and do not need adult scenes
- Look at the partner if you want adult content under that app's own policy
- Look at the partner if you want pictures inside the chat rather than in a separate tool
Privacy is the tie-breaker I'd weigh last but not least. Character AI keeps data you share to train its models, and the opt-out on record covers only the EEA and UK. If who reads your conversations matters to you, my explainer on whether Character AI can see your chats walks through what the policy allows. My advice either way: write to your characters as if the page might be read one day.
I'd also say this to anyone torn between the two. Character AI costs nothing to keep in your pocket, so you do not have to choose forever.
The good and bad of Character AI
What went well
- Free and unlimited messaging for all users, with no published daily cap
- Multilingual voice calls, which were free in my use
- An enormous, well-tagged character library
- Character creation with a personality, backstory and voice
- (c.ai) lite starts at $4.99 a month
What fell short
- No adult content on any plan, and the filter trips on harmless scenes
- Memory slips, down to forgetting your name mid-chat
- The free plan now lists full ads and slow mode
- Chats train the models, with an opt-out only in the EEA and UK
How to cancel c.ai+, and what about refunds?
I never had a subscription to cancel, since I stayed free from start to finish, so this section comes straight from the help centre. Where you paid decides the route. On the web, Settings > Account > Manage leads to the Customer Portal; you type in your account email and a secure portal link arrives in your inbox.
If you subscribed in the iOS app, the help centre says to refer to Apple Support; on Android, to Google Play Support. A slightly roundabout route on the web, but nothing is hidden.
Renewal is automatic: the terms say your payment method is charged at each agreed-upon periodic renewal until you cancel. If you only want one month, set a reminder for several days ahead of the renewal date.
The refund rule is the strict part: payments are final unless the law says otherwise. Store purchases are refunded through Apple or Google, and web purchases handled by Stripe need a support request under "Payments and purchases." I'd assume any money you spend is gone for good, and that's another reason I like how far the free plan carries you.
Checkout can be bumpy as well. One reviewer saw a credit card and a debit card rejected repeatedly at the c.ai+ checkout for three weeks, even though both went through fine on ten competitor sites. If that happens to you, the app store route may be the easier way in.
Stepping away, as I did in March 2026? If you want your history gone as well, clear it first with my steps for deleting Character AI chats, then remove the account.
Is Character AI safe with what you tell it?
This is where my affection for the app cools. Character AI states that it holds on to some of what you share in order to "help train and improve" its AI models. In plain words, your chats can feed the models by default.
An opt-out exists for the EEA and UK: Settings > Data & Privacy in the app, or Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Model Improvement on the web, where you untick "Improve the Model for Everyone." Even with that box cleared, the company keeps the right to use data for search, recommendations and safety classifiers, so Character AI search can still draw on what you share. Everyone else has no opt-out on record.
Deleting your account is "permanent and cannot be reversed." On the web it sits under Profile > Profile Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Delete Account; the mobile route is Profile > Settings icon > Remove Account. No time window is given for when the data is actually gone, and I'd like one. My practical advice: keep your full name, workplace and address out of character chats.
Is Character AI legit, and will it stick around?
Legit, yes. Character Technologies, Inc. is a United States company with apps on the web, iOS and Android and a public status page, so when people ask when Character AI will be back up after an outage, that page is the honest answer. Payments go by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The statement name is not on record, so check your first charge if discretion matters to you.
Stability, for me, is personal. I keep coming back anyway, the way you revisit your first branch, at 29 the same as at 26. That long on-and-off habit is the best stability signal I can offer. If your needs change, my list of Character AI alternatives is ready for you.
Final word on Character AI
Final score
6.6/10
OkayMy bookend app: the biggest free character library and patient voice practice, held back by an overzealous filter and forgotten names mid-chat.
Used hands-on with the free plan
- Spanish practice was endlessly patient, but the filter blocked harmless scenes, even a moody foggy alley.
- The bot forgot my name mid-conversation and the memory resets like a lapsed library card.
- My detective bot Vera was born here, and the creation tools plus a huge, well-tagged library are the best of their kind.
- Multilingual voice calls kept my Spanish alive; picture and video tools sit around them, video for paying members.
- I stayed free the whole time, and the free tier I used had no ads.
- Your conversations feed model training, with an opt-out only in the EEA and UK, though account deletion is clearly signposted.
- A large, established company with a public status page; one reviewer did hit repeated card declines at checkout.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: Character AI earns its place if you're after free SFW roleplay with no message cap, a giant library and patient voice practice. Look elsewhere for adult content, or for a companion that keeps your name straight.
I never paid, and that is my recommendation too: start free and stay there as long as it works. If the ads now listed on the free plan wear you down, (c.ai) lite at $4.99 is the plan I'd buy, mostly for the memory pins.
What bothers me most is the pairing of an overcautious filter with a forgetful bot. Skip it as well if chat training outside the EEA and UK is a dealbreaker. Everyone else: start free and build your first character.

When another app suits you better than Character AI
My bookend app is not everyone's, and the reasons to leave are predictable: the filter, the memory, or wanting to see your companion. Here is where I'd point a friend, going by what each record shows:
- Nomi AI for a companion that remembers: a free plan that never expires and allows 50 messages daily, and other reviewers credit it with proactive long-term memory
- Candy AI for a companion you can look at and talk to: images, video and voice calls, from €13.99 on the 1-Month Plan
- OurDream AI for image and video generation built into the plan, with Standard Monthly at $19.99; the free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, though its help centre says free dreamcoins are not currently offered
- GirlfriendGPT if you want to try it before committing: 20 bonus messages, then 10 more a day from Daily Login
All four allow adult content under their policies, some on paid plans only, and that is the main reason people outgrow Character AI. None of them matches its unlimited free chat, though. For a free start that lasts, Nomi AI comes closest.

A word on dates before the questions. My own use ran from spring 2023 to March 2026, and every first-hand line on this page comes from those months. Prices, plans and policies come from official pages checked in September 2026, and Character AI changes them often: lite prices vary by region, and AvatarFX reached c.ai+ members first.
Where my memory and today's page disagree, as with the ads, I have said so plainly. If you want to know where the facts come from and how each app is scored, see how I check the apps. The answers below cover what people ask most.
Your Character AI questions, from someone who stayed
What is Character AI used for?
Mostly for chatting and roleplay with AI characters, from ones other people made to ones you build yourself with a personality, backstory and voice. You can text or take live voice calls, join group chats with several characters and real people, and make images in the separate Imagine Chat tool. I used it for stories and for Spanish practice by voice. Adult content is not allowed on any plan.
Is Character AI safe?
It is a legit app from Character Technologies, Inc., a US company, with apps on the web, iOS and Android. Privacy is the weaker side: the company keeps data you share to train and improve its AI models, and the opt-out is limited to the EEA and UK. Account deletion is permanent, but no time window is given for when the data is gone.
Is the C.AI NSFW filter gone?
No. The content policy on record allows no adult content, and no plan changes that, including c.ai+ at $9.99 a month. Paying removes ads and slow mode and adds memory pins, but not the filter. In my own use it was cautious to a fault: it even flagged a moody description of a foggy alley. For adult roleplay, a different app is the better choice.
Can I use Character AI for free?
Yes. The official c.ai+ FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for all users, and no daily message cap is published. I stayed on the free plan for all seven months of my last stretch and spent nothing.
Today the free plan lists full ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features, so expect a few more interruptions than I had.
When will Character AI be back up?
Character AI runs a public status page, and that is the best place to see whether an outage is on its side and when service returns. On the free plan, busy periods can also bring slow mode, which slows replies without a full outage. The paid c.ai+ plan removes slow mode.
When was Character AI released?
The official launch date is not on file here, so I will not guess one. What I can tell you is my own timeline: I built my first bot on it in spring 2023, came back in September 2025 and stayed until March 2026. The company behind it is Character Technologies, Inc. in the United States.
How do I cancel c.ai+?
On the web, open Settings > Account > Manage, which takes you to the Customer Portal, then enter your account email and use the secure link it sends. If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, cancel through Apple or Google Play. Money is only returned where a law demands it, so cancel before the renewal date.
