What is Venice AI? My three months, in short

I spent three months on Venice AI in early 2025: I started on the free plan in January, then paid $15 for one month of Pro to get the character builder. It is the privacy pick for people who live in a browser, which is precisely what drew me in.

Venice AI is a privacy-first AI chat, image and video app from Venice.ai, a US company launched in 2024, where adult content sits behind a mature filter that only Pro users can switch off. It's available on iOS, Android and the web, and Venice also sells an OpenAI-compatible API. It is a general assistant with characters on top, not a girlfriend app at heart, and that shapes this whole Venice AI review.

Here is what I would want a friend to know before the first message:

  • The free plan lists 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day, with no monthly credits.
  • Pro is $18 a month today; I paid $15 for it in early 2025.
  • Adult content needs Pro, because only Pro accounts can disable the mature filter.
  • The privacy policy says prompt and response content is not stored or logged for normal inference.

My take: the app I would send a friend who cares about privacy more than romance. For character-first apps instead, my complete index of app reviews is the better starting shelf.

Venice AI free: what the free plan covers

You can try Venice AI free without a card, and that is how I started in January 2025. The pricing page lists 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day on the Free plan, with base models only and no monthly credits. A help-centre article gives slightly different numbers: 10 text, 5 character and 16 image prompts a day with an account, and 5, 5 and 10 with no account at all.

I love that last detail. Typing before you even sign up is about as low-commitment as a start gets.

Quick math: 10 text prompts is a short conversation, not an evening. Treat it as a sample of the tone, the images and the interface. If you are hunting for a Venice AI free trial, the Free plan is it, since there is no other way to judge the app before paying.

My view of the arrangement: the privacy is free, the accessories cost, and that split strikes me as fair. The Venice AI at a glance box sums up the core facts. For a character-first app to hold it against, my CrushOn AI write-up is a fair comparison.

How I check the apps

How the chat and the model menu feel

The Venice AI chat is closer to a model picker than to one fixed personality, and the model selection is huge. That was a big part of the appeal for me, and also my biggest friction. Breadth recreates the paradox of choice.

I bounced between models like an indecisive reader with a tall stack, and as someone with a to-read-shelf problem, I recognized the disease immediately.

The Venice AI models on the free plan are the base ones. Pro opens all Pro models plus extended context, which matters for long roleplay because more of the story stays in view. Video, music and frontier models run on credits, at 100 credits to $1.

My advice, learned the tall-stack way: pick one model for a week before you judge the app, or you will spend your prompts comparing instead of chatting.

Memory is where I would keep expectations modest. Venice has a feature called Memoria, described as privacy-preserving memory of past conversations, stored locally. Official pages disagree on who gets it: a blog post states no plan restriction, while a changelog snippet says it is on by default for Pro users. I would plan as if it were a Pro feature until Venice clears that up.

Voice Mode, the feature that reads replies out loud, needs Pro. The record shows no live voice calls and no group chat, so this is a text-and-images app first.

My overall read on the chat: flexible and capable, and it asks you to bring the character yourself. If it ever stops answering, my Venice AI outage status page is the first place I would look before blaming your connection.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

Venice AI NSFW rules and the mature filter

Here is the content answer in one line: adult content is allowed, but only on a paid plan. The help centre says "Only Pro Account users can disable the mature filter." On the free plan, the filter stays on.

Uncensored is a word I would use for Venice myself, at least on Pro. The catch is the label. The pricing page calls the free plan "Private & uncensored", yet the mature filter cannot be turned off there.

The models may well be open, but a new reader will take that Venice AI uncensored label as a promise about content, and the free plan does not keep it. I would rather the free card said plainly that the filter switch is a Pro feature.

The default itself I like. The filter is on until you switch it off, so nothing mature shows up unless you asked for it. For anyone who opens an app on a shared screen, that is a kindness.

Character creation is the other half, and it is listed as a Pro feature. The character builder was the reason I paid $15 for a month of Pro in early 2025, and I respected the arrangement: the privacy is free, the accessories cost. The official pages do not describe the builder's options, such as gender or appearance settings, so I cannot tell you from the record how open it is to every kind of user.

So the three things a companion fan wants most, a custom character, a voice and the filter switch, all land on the same plan. One upgrade, no puzzle. If that bundle is not what you want, my list of Venice AI alternatives sorts rivals by the same content rules.

What Venice AI costs next to companion apps

Venice AI pricing starts at $18 a month for Pro today. When I paid in early 2025, one month of Pro cost me $15, so the monthly price has gone up since; the annual plan, $180 a year, now works out to the $15.00 a month I paid then.

For comparison, Joi AI's Premium - Monthly is $13.99, DreamGen's Advanced plan is $19.35 and GoLove AI's PRO is $19.99 for a single month. So Pro sits in the usual range. The difference is what the money buys.

Companion apps spend it on a ready-made partner, with memory and voice built around one character. Venice spends it on unlimited text prompts, 1,000 images a day, character creation, extended context and 100 credits a month. For a heavy chatter who likes to shape the story, that is generous.

For someone who mainly wants a flirty partner, you would be paying for tools you will not touch.

The big plans are a different animal. Pro Plus ($68) and Max ($200) exist for video and image credits, not chat, and I would not consider either for a companion.

Start on Free. Pro is $18 a month or $180 a year; I paid $15 for one month of Pro in early 2025. Pro Plus and Max suit heavy credit use.

Is Venice AI Pro worth paying for?

For one month, it was for me: the character builder was the reason I paid $15 in early 2025, and one month is what I bought. Venice AI Pro removes the text cap and adds all Pro models, extended context, character creation, Voice Mode and the mature filter switch. If any of those is why you are here, the free plan simply cannot show it to you.

My plan pick: Pro monthly at $18 for a first month. The annual option at $180 works out to $15.00 a month, but I would take it only after a monthly stretch, since money paid to Venice stays paid unless the law says otherwise.

Pro Plus is where I would slow down. At $68 it includes 7,500 credits, and at 100 credits to $1 that is $75 of credit, plus 2-month credit banking. Fair if you already spend on video, a waste if you do not. The plan cards lay out every tier side by side.

Venice AI option Billed Cost Works out per month
Pro monthly $18.00 $18.00
Pro Plus monthly $68.00 $68.00
Max monthly $200.00 $200.00
Pro (annual) yearly $180.00 $15.00
Pro Plus (annual) yearly $735.00 $61.25
Max (annual) yearly $2,160.00 $180.00

The closest alternative I would suggest

That card puts the Venice AI official website next to a partner app, and the choice between them is really a choice between a tool and a companion. My way of choosing between the two:

  • Stay with Venice AI if privacy wording matters more to you than anything else.
  • Stay with Venice AI if you want chat, images and video in one place, plus an API.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a girlfriend with a set personality from the first message.
  • Look elsewhere if you want to build your own character without paying.

My honest view: Venice wins on privacy and flexibility and loses on warmth. Nothing in its pricing is built around one relationship, and that is fine, because it never claims to be. The trouble starts only if you expect it to act like a companion app out of the box.

If you would like to see a character-first site in the same format, my SpicyChat review is a useful contrast. Whichever way you lean, start with the free plan, with no account at all if you like.

The good and bad of Venice AI

What went well

  • Free plan with 10 text and 15 image prompts a day, and a no-account option
  • Privacy policy says prompt and response content is not stored or logged for normal inference
  • Pro includes unlimited text prompts and 1,000 images a day
  • Mature filter on by default, switched off only by choice on Pro
  • Web, iOS and Android, plus an OpenAI-compatible API

What fell short

  • Character creation, Voice Mode and the filter switch are all Pro-only
  • All fees, subscriptions and credits alike, are non-refundable except as required by law
  • Which plans include Memoria is unclear across official pages
  • Pro now costs $18 a month, up from the $15 I paid in early 2025

How to cancel Venice AI, and why refunds are rare

Subscriptions renew on their own, so if you're finished, cancel ahead of the renewal date. On Venice itself the path is: open the chat history drawer, tap your username, then Account Info, Manage Subscription and Cancel subscription. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel there instead, not inside Venice.

I kept Pro for one month and no more, which is the pattern I would suggest to anyone.

The refund rule is short and strict. Nothing you pay for, whether a subscription or credits, comes back unless the law requires it. The one exception I like: when a video generation fails, the credits return on their own. Paying for a clip that never arrived would sting, so that is fair.

A no-refund policy changes how I would buy. Take one month of Pro, not a year, and do not top up credits you have no plan for. Credits roll over, and Pro Plus and Max bank them for 2 and 3 months, which softens the blow if you overbuy.

On discretion: the name on a card statement is not on record, and the billing note says so plainly. Venice also takes cryptocurrency, and the Venice AI token route, staking DIEM or VVV, is another option, though I would call it niche. Buy on a phone and the App Store or Google Play handles billing, so the charge carries the store's name.

If adult chat is the main reason you are weighing Pro, my ranking of NSFW AI chat apps shows which rivals allow it without a paid switch. Decide your exit before you pay, and mark the renewal date the moment you subscribe.

Is Venice AI private?

This is where Venice earns its place, and why I chose it in the first place. Private by design, no logs, a huge model selection: it is the anti-corporate option, and the part of me that helps run digital-privacy sessions approved of the posture in writing. The privacy policy backs that up.

It says Venice "does not store or log prompt and response content for normal inference", and describes a zero data retention policy with its model providers. Images or videos you upload sit in temporary storage and are deleted within 1 hour.

Memoria, the memory feature, is described as stored locally rather than on Venice's side. I like that design choice for an app where people share personal things.

A few calm caveats. Once an account is deleted, it cannot be recovered, so save anything you care about first. Personal data is deleted or anonymised once it is no longer necessary, which is a rule without a set deadline.

And a policy is a promise, so I would still keep your real name, address and workplace out of any chat.

For why I quote privacy policies word for word rather than paraphrase them, see how I check the apps.

What users elsewhere think of Venice AI

confirmed

I give it 7.0/10.

Who owns Venice AI, and is it legit?

Venice AI is run by Venice.ai, a US company with a published address in Sheridan, Wyoming, and it launched in 2024. It publishes terms, a privacy policy, a help centre and a public status page, and the App Store rating sits in the digest above. So is Venice AI legit? I would say yes.

My one stability note: a company that runs a staking token alongside a chat app has more moving parts than most. That is not an alarm, just a reason to keep the plan monthly.

Final word on Venice AI

Final score

7.0/10

Solid

Venice is the privacy-first pick with no chat logs and a huge model choice; the builder costs extra and the choice can paralyse.

Used hands-on with a paid plan

  • Uncensored with a huge model choice, and I bounced between models like an indecisive reader.
  • A locally stored memory feature exists, though which plan gets it is unclear.
  • The character builder sits behind Pro.
  • Images on every tier, credit-metered video, and read-aloud voice on Pro.
  • The privacy is free and the accessories cost; I paid $15 for my Pro month.
  • It says it does not store or log prompts and replies.
  • Its status page shows no recent incidents.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: worth it if you want a private, flexible chat and image tool, and a skip if you want a ready-made girlfriend who feels like one from the start. The plan I would buy is Pro at $18 a month, for one month first, exactly as I did at $15 in early 2025. It unlocks the character builder, Voice Mode and the filter switch in one go.

What bothers me most is the free plan's "uncensored" label while the mature filter stays on until you pay. The friction I felt myself was choice: so many models that I bounced between them. Skip Venice AI if you want a free character builder or a refund safety net. Everyone else can start free, even without an account.

When a companion app fits better

Venice is a toolbox, and some readers want a partner instead. Here is where I would send you, by what you are missing most:

  • Pictures and video of one character: Joi AI builds around that, with 6 lifetime free images and Premium at $13.99 a month.
  • Long, structured stories: DreamGen's free tier includes access to all current AI models, and Starter is $7.83 a month.
  • Group scenes: GoLove AI lists group chat, and other reviewers report its Group Scenarios kept three character voices distinct.
  • Privacy first, tool feel accepted: stay with Venice AI.

A word on money. GoLove AI's PRO costs $19.99 for one month but $119.88 for twelve, which makes yearly the smarter math once you are sure. DreamGen stands out on refunds, with prorated refunds in its pricing FAQ, which is kinder than Venice's rule.

On content, the three differ too. Joi AI and DreamGen allow adult content, while GoLove AI keeps it for paid plans, much like Venice.

If what you really want is warmth rather than tools, my AI girlfriend rankings start from exactly that angle. My short advice: pick the app whose free start matches what you want most, then pay for a single month.

Instead of Venice AI

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

Those three cards are my picks if Venice feels too much like a tool. Joi AI suits visual fans, since images and video are its core. DreamGen is the storyteller's choice, and its prorated refunds are the gentlest money rule of the three. GoLove AI suits anyone who likes ready-made scenarios to get a chat going.

If a friend asked which to try first after Venice, I would say DreamGen, because its free tier includes all current models. And if privacy is still the thing you care about most, you may already be in the right place. The questions below cover free limits, safety, Pro, refunds and payment.

Venice AI questions, answered plainly

Is Venice AI free?

Yes, there is a free plan, and I started on it in January 2025. The pricing page lists 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day on base models, with no monthly credits. A help-centre article gives 10 text, 5 character and 16 image prompts a day with an account, and 5, 5 and 10 without one. Pro costs $18 a month today.

Is Venice AI safe?

For privacy, it is the app I would point a cautious friend to first. The privacy policy says Venice does not store or log prompt and response content for normal inference, and uploaded images and videos are deleted from temporary storage within 1 hour. Account deletion is permanent, so save anything you want first, and keep real names and addresses out of any chat.

Does Venice AI allow adult content?

Yes, on a paid plan. The help centre says only Pro account users can disable the mature filter, so it stays on for the free plan. The filter is on by default, which I think is the right choice for anyone who opens the app on a shared screen. If adult roleplay is your main reason to be here, plan on Pro from the start.

How much is Venice AI Pro?

Pro is $18 a month or $180 a year today. I paid $15 for one month of Pro in early 2025 to use the character builder. It includes all Pro models, unlimited text prompts, 1,000 images a day, character creation, extended context and 100 credits a month. Pro Plus is $68 a month and Max is $200 a month.

Can I get a refund from Venice AI?

Generally no. Subscriptions and credits are only refunded where the law demands it. The exception: if a video fails to generate, Venice puts the credits back automatically. To stop paying, cancel before renewal: chat history drawer, your username, Account Info, Manage Subscription, Cancel subscription. App Store and Google Play subscriptions are cancelled through those stores.

How can I pay for Venice AI?

Venice takes credit cards, cryptocurrency, DIEM/VVV token staking, and in-app purchase through the App Store or Google Play on mobile. USDC is used for per-request API payments. If discretion on a card statement matters to you, crypto is the route I would look at first, since the statement name is not on record.
