How many people use Character AI? What's actually known

How many people use Character AI, according to the company?

No number is on file. Character AI's help centre, its subscription page, its model-training page and its App Store listing don't publish a user count, a daily figure or a live counter. So I won't give you one.

Any figure you see quoted elsewhere is someone else's claim, and unless it links back to Character AI itself, I'd treat it as a guess.

What the official pages do show are signs of a big, busy service:

  • The interface comes in 28 languages, from Bulgarian to Vietnamese
  • You can use it on the web, iOS and Android
  • At high load, free users are moved to "slow mode", with reduced response speed
  • The company keeps a public status page for outages

None of those is a headcount. But an app doesn't translate itself into 28 languages or add a slower lane for busy hours without a lot of people knocking on the door. My take: it's clearly popular, and its exact size is simply unpublished.

For most readers, the popularity question hides a practical one. Is it worth joining, and what does a crowd this size mean for my experience and my data? The rest of this page deals with that.

The table right below, "The apps side by side", sets Character AI against five other apps, so you can compare what each one offers whatever its size.

I like that framing better anyway. A big user base tells you people enjoy something. It doesn't tell you whether it suits you, whether the free plan fits your habits, or how your chats are handled.

And if you're here because you're thinking of leaving, the size of the crowd matters less than your own history. That step gets its own careful walkthrough: how to delete Character AI chats.

Why do people use Character AI?

In the company's own words, the point is helping people connect, learn and tell stories, all through interactive entertainment. Reading the feature list, I'd put the draw down to a few concrete things:

  • Messaging that costs nothing and has no cap, for every user, with ads
  • Characters you design yourself, with personalities, backstories and voices
  • Group chats where several characters and people share one room
  • Live voice calls, plus Imagine Chat for pictures

The first point is the big one for me. Other reviewers report that Character AI was the only platform in one week-long round whose free tier had no message wall, though it does show ads. If that's typical, it explains a lot of the crowd on its own.

I also like that the character tools don't push one default user. You build who you talk to, and that makes the app feel open to a much wider range of people than companion apps built around one preset partner.

Is Character AI made of real people?

The short answer is no. The characters are AI, and the replies are generated by Character AI's models. Real people create many of the characters, since anyone can design one with the creation tools, but once you start chatting, the voice on the other side is the model playing that character.

There are two clues in the official pages that make this plain. The company says it keeps some of the data you share for training and improving its AI models, and it names its chat models on the pricing page, PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr. That's software, not a team typing back.

The one exception is group chat, which I cover in the next section. There, real people can join the same room as the characters.

A small caution follows from all this. Because the replies come from a model, they can sound confident while being wrong. Other reviewers report the AI occasionally adds believable details out of nowhere, stated just as firmly, like a hotel or a cake never actually mentioned. I'd enjoy the stories and not treat anything a character says as fact.

Can you chat with real people on Character AI?

Yes, in one place: Character Group Chat. The official blog announced it on 2023-10-11 with a clear description: one room where people chat with several AI characters and other humans at once. So if you've wondered whether you're ever talking to another person, the answer is only when you've joined a group chat with them.

The details on file are worth knowing before you invite anyone:

  • At launch it was on the iOS and Android apps only, and web support was described as planned
  • A secondary source says invite links now let you join a group chat on the web too
  • Creating one on the web reportedly depends on account rollout, and that status is unconfirmed
  • In ordinary one-to-one chats, every reply comes from the AI

My opinion: group chat is a genuinely fun idea, and it's part of why the app feels social even though most chats are with AI. But I'd treat anyone you meet there like anyone online. Keep personal details out of shared rooms, because the other humans in them are exactly that: other humans.

If group chat is what draws you, it helps to know it isn't unique. Several apps on file offer it too:

SpicyChat and OurDream AI both list group chat as a feature. Nomi AI keeps it for paying members, and its Standard Plan allows up to 10 active group chats, which starts at $15.99 a month. Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT don't list it on file.

Of those, I'd look at SpicyChat first if price matters, since text chat on its Default model is unlimited for free users, in exchange for ads and the odd waiting line. Nomi AI is the stronger pick if you'd pay for memory and voice, and you get 50 free messages a day to make up your mind.

None of this makes Character AI's version worse. But it's good to know you have options if a busy app gets too busy.

How many people use Character AI daily, or right now?

There's no official daily figure and no live counter on file. If a site shows you "people online now" for Character AI, ask where the number comes from. Unless it's the company, I wouldn't lean on it.

What you can see is indirect. Character AI runs a public status page, which reports whether its systems are working rather than how many people are on them. The free plan also says it uses slow mode, a reduced response speed, at high load.

Put simply, when a lot of people are chatting at once, free users may wait longer for replies.

That's the clearest sign of daily demand I can point to, and it matters more to you than any headcount would. If you chat at busy times on the free plan, slow mode is the price of the crowd. If that annoys you, the paid plans are the fix on file: c.ai+ at $9.99 a month lists no slow mode, and (c.ai) lite, from $4.99 a month, cuts ads and gives you some premium chat-style messages every day.

My honest take on those plans: I'd try the free plan at the hours you actually use it before paying for anything. If slow mode never bothers you, there's nothing to fix. If it does, (c.ai) lite is the cheaper step to try, though its FAQ says pricing varies by region.

A side note on paying. Other reviewers report that c.ai+ checkout turned down both a credit and a debit card for three weeks, though ten competitor sites accepted those cards. One case isn't a pattern, but it's worth knowing that payment methods on file are card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and there's no PayPal option confirmed.

If the app feels crowded, remember the free plan still has no published message cap. That's generous, and a little patience at peak times is a fair trade for it. I'd rather wait a little than pay for speed I don't need.

For other practical questions, from cancelling to deleting your data, my help section collects every guide in one place. The offer line below goes to Character AI, if you want to join the crowd yourself.

Does a huge user base change how your data is handled?

Not by itself, but it's a good moment to look at the rules, because a popular app holds a lot of conversations. Character AI says it keeps some of what you share so it can train and improve its AI models. People in the EEA or UK can opt out by unticking "Improve the Model for Everyone", under Settings > Data & Privacy in the app or Model Improvement on the web.

Opting out has limits, though: the company says it can still use data for search, recommendations and safety classifiers.

I give the company credit for saying it plainly. What I don't like is that the opt-out is only on file for the EEA and UK. If you live elsewhere, the practical protection is what you choose to type. I'd keep real names, addresses and anything sensitive out of every chat.

Deletion is the other lever. Account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed, but the help article gives no time window for when it completes. For an app this size, I'd have liked a number there.

Where do user numbers come from, and which should you trust?

This is the part most people skip. A user figure can mean registered accounts, monthly visitors, daily active users or app downloads, and those can differ enormously. Without the company saying which, a single number tells you very little.

My rule of thumb is simple. Trust a figure only if it comes from Character AI's own pages, and read what it measures before repeating it. Figures from traffic estimators or news stories may be interesting, but they are estimates, not facts, and none of them is on file for this page.

There's also a reason not to care much. The numbers that change your experience are the ones on file: free messaging with no published cap, $9.99 a month for c.ai+, $94.99 a year for the annual plan, 30 memory pins on the paid tiers. Those tell you what you get. A user count tells you what other people chose.

If you want to know how I pick which sources count for facts like these, my page on how I check the apps explains the approach.

Does a big audience mean the content rules will change?

Not on the evidence on file. Character AI's content policy is recorded as no adult content, on every plan, and a large crowd doesn't change that by itself. Nothing on file links popularity to a looser policy, so I wouldn't count on it. Any real change would show up on the company's own pages first.

For the NSFW question, whether Character AI will allow NSFW collects what the company has said officially and what is only rumour.

It also helps to see how the company earns. On file are c.ai+, (c.ai) lite, Charms packs from $0.99 to $99.99, and ads on the free plan. My explainer on how Character AI makes money walks through how those pieces fit.

Should the size of the crowd decide whether you join?

Here's what I'd tell a friend who asked. Popularity is a decent sign that an app is worth a look, but it's a poor reason to pay. Character AI is clearly used by a lot of people, and the free plan is generous enough that you can find out for yourself at no cost.

Join if you want free, unlimited character chat, like building your own characters, or want to try group chat with friends. Expect ads and slow mode at busy times on the free plan.

One more point that matters to me: the creation tools are open to everyone, so you don't have to fit one default user to enjoy the app. Build your own character and you decide who it is, with the personality, backstory and voice you pick. That is a better reason to try Character AI than any user count.

Think twice if you want adult content, which the policy doesn't allow, or if the training opt-out matters to you and you live outside the EEA or UK.

Skip the paid plans until the free one frustrates you. If it does, (c.ai) lite is the cheaper first step, and the annual c.ai+ at $94.99, about $7.92 a month, is only worth it when you're sure you'll stay.

The exact number of people on Character AI may never be published. A few evenings of your own on the free plan will tell you more than any headcount anyway.

Common questions

How many people use Character AI?

No official user count is on file. Character AI's help centre, subscription page and App Store listing do not publish a total, a daily figure or a live counter. What they do show is a large service: an interface in 28 languages, apps for the web, iOS and Android, and a free tier that uses slow mode at high load.

How many people are using Character AI right now?

No live count is published. Character AI runs a public status page, but it reports whether systems are working, not how many people are online. The clearest sign of a busy moment is slow mode, the reduced response speed the free tier uses at high load.

Is Character AI made of real people?

No. The characters are AI, and replies come from Character AI's own models, such as PipSqueak 2 on the free plan. Real people design many of the characters with the creation tools, but they do not type the replies. The company says some of what you share goes into training its models.

Are any of the people you talk to on Character AI real?

Only in group chat. Character AI's official blog describes Character Group Chat as a room shared by several AI characters and people. It launched on iOS and Android, and web support for creating groups is still unconfirmed. One-to-one chats are always with the AI.

Why do people use Character AI?

The biggest draw on file is that anyone can message for free with no limit, ads included. Add characters you can design yourself, with personalities, backstories and voices, plus group chats and live voice calls. Paid plans from $4.99 a month cut ads and add memory pins, but none of that is needed to start.

Can you use Character AI for free?

Yes. The Free plan gives unlimited messaging on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. (c.ai) lite starts at $4.99 a month, and c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year.
