Character AI alternatives: 13 apps compared, catches included

What are apps like Character AI, and which one fits you?

If you are asking what are apps like Character AI, the core wish is usually the same: a big library of characters, roleplay, and the option to build your own. Where they differ is the rest. Some want pictures, some want voice, some want a free start that lasts, and some want adult content switched on.

So here is my short version. SpicyChat, Nomi AI and Candy AI lead this list: a giant community library with free text chat, characters who remember you, and a detailed builder. If you want the nearest thing to a character hub with a clean content level, Talkie AI is a strong pick.

If you want characters you can talk to and see, Rubii is the smart small plan. For adults after group chat, voice and images in one place, Soulkyn has the widest feature set here, at a price.

If your favourite characters are drawn rather than realistic, my anime AI chat rankings sort the apps for that style. The table below lines up all 13 apps.

How I ranked these Character AI alternatives

The order weighs checked facts from official pages, and I add my opinion on top. The first thing I look at is fit: does the app share Character AI's core mix? That means a character library, roleplay, making your own characters, and a similar approach to content.

An app that is really a single-companion app, or only an image tool, sits lower even if it is good at that job.

Next comes the free start: is there a free tier, and are its limits published or only guessed at by outside sites? Then price, meaning the cheapest plan I think is worth paying for, plus any coins or credits on top. Last, the fine print: who you pay, how you cancel and what the refund rule says.

My bias, said plainly: I rank an honest, published free limit above a long feature list. An app with no official pricing page loses points with me, even when the price looks low. If long scenes and story arcs are your main reason to leave, my AI chat roleplay list ranks the apps built around roleplay first.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

Below are my top eight Character AI alternatives, each with its own entry; the other five sit in the comparison table above. Every entry answers the same questions: what the app is, why it fits this list, what the free start gives, which plan I'd pay for, the catch, and who should skip it. The key facts come as a short list under my text, so I keep the prose for opinion.

One heads-up: two of these eight list no adult content at all, five allow it, and one keeps it to paid plans. Pick the entry that matches your reason for leaving and skip the rest.

The first 3 spots are my top picks, and their scores include an author bonus you can see in each review.

SpicyChat: a giant community library, free text and personas

#1

SpicyChat 8.4/10

Giant library, free text chat

  • Freemium
  • NSFW on all plans
  • Remembers past chats

starts at $5/mo

Start with SpicyChat See the review

SpicyChat, from NextDay AI Incorporated in Montreal, keeps the shape that made Character AI popular: a huge community library of characters, roleplay at the centre, and a builder where you set a character's appearance, personality and backstory yourself. The free plan will feel familiar too. Text chat on the Default model has no cap, paid for with ads and a possible queue at busy times, much like Character AI's free tier with its ads and slow mode.

The big difference is content. Character AI does not allow adult content; SpicyChat's policy does, and outside reviews say a signed-in free account can switch adult text chat on with two settings. It stays off until you choose it.

Personas, meaning who you are in the scene, go up to 10 on Get a Taste at $5.95 a month, 50 on True Supporter and 100 on Im All In, and the forums are an active community for writing tips.

What you give up: it runs in a browser, with no phone app on file, and there are no live voice calls, only text-to-speech replies on Im All In at $29.95. Free replies stop at 180 tokens with 4K memory. Refunds are for exceptional cases once you've used the account.

Skip it if voice calls were your favourite part of Character AI. For every plan, see my SpicyChat review.

  • Starting free: Free tier
  • Lowest price: $5.00 monthly (Get a Taste)
  • Allowed: mature chat permitted
  • Runs on: web

Nomi AI: fewer characters, but ones that remember you

#2

Nomi AI 8.3/10

Characters who remember you

  • Freemium: 50 msgs daily
  • NSFW on all plans
  • Remembers past chats

starts at $8.33/mo

Start with Nomi AI See the review

Nomi AI, made by Glimpse.ai, Inc., runs on the web, iOS and Android. It isn't a character hub in the Character AI sense; there's no big public catalogue on file. Instead you create your own characters, called Nomis, and the point is that they remember.

Memory in the short, medium and long term is presented as the main feature, and other reviewers describe it recalling older details without a prompt.

For people who left Character AI because a long story kept slipping, that's the appeal. The free plan is permanent: 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, no ads, 2 images a day. Standard is $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, $8.33 monthly, with unlimited messages, voice calls, up to 10 active Nomis and 10 group chats where your characters meet.

Its content policy allows adult chat, unlike Character AI, but images are clothed on every tier and one review says they come from a ready-made gallery. Voice replies are reported to lag 15 to 20 seconds. The terms rule out refunds for dissatisfaction or unused time and grant a broad licence to use chats to improve the system.

Skip it if browsing thousands of characters is why you came. Memory and privacy are covered in my Nomi AI review.

  • Starting free: Free tier, 50 free messages daily
  • Lowest price: $8.33 monthly (Standard Plan Yearly)
  • Allowed: mature chat permitted
  • Runs on: web, ios, android

Candy AI: one companion built in detail, paid from the start

#3

Candy AI 8.2/10

One companion, built in detail

  • Freemium
  • NSFW with a paid plan
  • Remembers past chats

starts at €3.99/mo

Start with Candy AI See the review

Candy AI is a web companion and roleplay app from EverAI Limited in Malta. It suits a Character AI user who wants to stop browsing and build one character properly: the builder sets ethnicity, looks, personality, voice and hobbies, and paid plans add images, video and voice calls on tokens. Creating your own companion costs 10 tokens.

Unlike Character AI, it is not free to live in. The Help Centre allows up to 5 messages in total on a free account, so the free side is a preview. The paid plans all carry the same perks, including text chat with no cap and 100 tokens a month: €13.99 for one month, €26.97 for three, or €47.88 for a year, which is €3.99 a month. Adult content is allowed on those paid plans only.

The catches are memory and refunds. Other reviewers report details holding for roughly 10 to 20 messages, a real limit for long roleplay. Outside the EU and UK, refund requests close 24 hours after payment, and a subscription loses refund eligibility once more than 20 tokens are spent. There's no big character library to browse either.

Skip it if you want free, unlimited chat with many characters. The token costs are spelled out in my Candy AI review.

  • Starting free: Free tier
  • Lowest price: €3.99 monthly (12-Month Plan)
  • Allowed: mature chat, paid plans
  • Runs on: web

Talkie AI: the closest match to a character hub, with voice and images

#4

Talkie AI 5.5/10

Character hub fans who want voice

  • Freemium: ~50 msgs daily

starts at $9.99/mo

Try Talkie AI for free See the review

Talkie AI comes from SUBSUP PTE. LTD. and runs on the web and Android. It mixes a character hub, companion chat, roleplay and image generation, and it lists no adult content.

That combination is exactly why it ranks high here: if you liked browsing characters and making your own, Talkie AI keeps that shape and adds voice calls, images and video.

The free start is real but vague. The Terms name a "Free Use" tier, yet no numeric limit is published on an official page. Outside sites put it at about 50 messages a day, and I'd treat that as a rough guide, not a promise.

The plan I'd consider is Talkie+ at $9.99 a month, with Talkie+ Pro at $24.99 for heavier use. Both prices come from secondary sources, since there is no official pricing page, and that bothers me a little. My advice is to stay on free until the limits actually get in your way.

The catch is memory. Other reviewers report that it is solid short term but weak in long conversations, and that free-tier memory is throttled to about 10,000 tokens. If that is right, long storylines are not its strength. Paying ties you to the store as well: cancelling works only through the marketplace you bought from, and fees are non-refundable.

Who should skip it: anyone who wants adult content, which is covered in my NSFW AI chat rankings instead.

  • Starting free: Free tier, ~50
  • Lowest price: $9.99 monthly (Talkie+ (Standard))
  • Allowed: unconfirmed
  • Runs on: web, android

Rubii: characters you can chat with and see, on a $7.99 plan

#5

Rubii 6.6/10

Chat plus images on a budget

  • Freemium
  • Remembers past chats

starts at $7.99/mo

Try Rubii for free See the review

Rubii is run jointly by YoMio Tech Limited and EIGENVECTOR LTD, and it is on the web, iOS and Android. It pairs a character hub and roleplay with pictures and video clips it can generate, and it lists no adult content. For a Character AI fan who wants to see the characters too, it is one of the neatest fits here.

The free start works on Rubies. You get 50 on sign-up and 30 for each daily login, plus 200 with a referral code and 300 for linking Discord or QQ. You can browse public characters and start without paying, which I like.

The plan I'd pick is Plus at $7.99 a month: 800 Rubies at once, which Rubii puts at about 1,600 messages or 400 images, plus 5 free images a day. Pro at $14.99 brings 3,000 Rubies and 15 free images a day, and I'd only move up once you know how fast you spend. Premium at $29.99 is for heavy creators.

The catch is the currency. Rubies make the real cost harder to read than a flat plan, and cancelling runs through the app marketplace where you subscribed. The refund policy promises nothing in advance but does not refuse outright either, which is fairer than most. Outside reviews say characters keep context across sessions, a real plus here.

Who should skip it: anyone who hates counting coins. For a single steady partner rather than a hub, see my AI girlfriend picks.

  • Starting free: Free tier
  • Lowest price: $7.99 monthly (Plus (Rubii+))
  • Allowed: unconfirmed
  • Runs on: web, ios, android

Soulkyn: the widest feature set for adults, with a steep top plan

#6

Soulkyn 6.8/10

Adults who want every feature

  • Freemium
  • NSFW on all plans
  • Remembers past chats

starts at €11.99/mo

Try Soulkyn for free See the review

Soulkyn is made by Cube Digital Media Ltd. and runs in the browser only. It has a character hub, companion chat, roleplay, image and video generation, voice calls, group chat and even an API, and adult content is allowed. If you left Character AI because of content rules, this is the most complete adult option on the page.

The free start is the weak point. Soulkyn says free accounts exist but are limited, and exact free limits are not published on a reachable official page. So I'd treat free as a look around, not a place to stay.

Pricing needs care. The one plan confirmed on the official page is Deluxe at €49.90 a month, which covers the 70B model with no chat cap, plus unlimited images and voice, while video is pay-per-use in Souls. Outside reviews also mention Just Chatting at €11.99 and Premium at €24.99, not confirmed officially. If Just Chatting is on offer, that is the plan I'd start with.

The catch: other reviewers report that memory keeps a scene together inside one session yet loses it from one week to the next, and that voice sounds flat. Heavy image use is also said to burn credits faster than the headline price suggests. My honest view is that Deluxe is a lot of money for a first month.

Who should skip it: anyone on a tight budget or on a phone without a browser habit. My uncensored AI list has cheaper ways in.

  • Starting free: Free tier
  • Lowest price: €11.99 monthly (Just Chatting)
  • Allowed: mature chat permitted
  • Runs on: web

Perchance AI Character Chat: free, unlimited and no account needed

#7

Perchance AI Character Chat 6.7/10

Free chat with no sign-up

  • Freemium: unlimited msgs daily
  • Remembers past chats

Starts free

Try Perchance AI Character Chat for free See the review

Perchance AI Character Chat lives on Perchance.org, a web project with no named company behind it. It is a character hub with roleplay, companion chat, image generation, group chat and your own characters. That is a very close match to what people liked about Character AI, and it costs nothing.

The free start is the whole product. There are unlimited messages and images with no account, no credits and no paywall, paid for by ads. For the Character AI alternative with no sign-up that so many people ask about, nothing else here comes close, and I think that honesty deserves a high spot.

There is no paid plan to pick, so my advice is simple: open it and start. There is no voice, which matters if you liked talking out loud.

The catch is polish and memory. Outside write-ups say memory held for 30-40 exchanges but lost a plot point about 60 messages back, and that the base interface looks dated. Image quality is called serviceable, better in a realistic style than anime.

The lack of a named company also means less clarity about who handles your data, so I'd keep personal details out of it.

Who should skip it: anyone who wants voice, a polished app, or long-term memory. For more options that cost nothing, my free AI chat list goes further.

  • Starting free: Free tier, unlimited
  • Lowest price: unconfirmed
  • Allowed: unconfirmed

HammerAI: 600 free messages a day and cheap unlimited plans

#8

HammerAI 7.6/10

Big free allowance, lorebooks

  • Freemium: 600 msgs daily
  • NSFW on all plans
  • Remembers past chats

starts at $9/mo

Try HammerAI for free See the review

HammerAI comes from Sunspot LLC, and you can use it on the web, iOS or Android. It is a character hub aimed at roleplay and companion talk, and it adds image generation, group chats and lorebooks, and adult content is allowed. If you know Character AI's own strengths, HammerAI will feel familiar in shape: a community library of characters and your own creations on top.

The free start is one of the most generous on this page: 600 messages a day on cloud models, with a context of 8,192 tokens, 2 cloud models and no monthly credits, so no free images. The FAQ adds that chatting with local models in the desktop app is free and unlimited. For apps like Character AI with unlimited messages, that local route is a big deal.

The plan I'd pay for is Starter at $9 a month. It brings unlimited cloud messages, a 16,384-token context, 4 cloud models, 1,500 credits a month (150 images or 300 TTS), group chats and lorebooks. Advanced at $18 doubles the context to 32,768 tokens with 3,500 credits. I'd skip Ultimate at $35 unless you want 14 models to play with.

The catch comes in three parts. First, other reviewers report that on the free 8,192-token context, characters lost track of older details once a session ran long, and lorebooks helped. Second, all the choices (local or cloud models, credits, lorebooks) can confuse a newcomer. Third, billing runs through Gank, and all purchases are final with no refunds.

You cancel through the Manage button, which sends you to Gank, or through your app store if you subscribed on mobile.

My view: for text roleplay per dollar, HammerAI is hard to beat, and outside write-ups add that messages cost no credits. Start free, and pay only once the context limit starts to annoy you.

Who should skip it: anyone who wants voice calls, which HammerAI does not offer, or anyone who wants a simple app with one button.

  • Starting free: Free tier, 600 free messages daily
  • Lowest price: $9.00 monthly (Starter)
  • Allowed: mature chat permitted
  • Runs on: web, ios, android

What these Character AI alternatives cost

Here is how I read the plan cards below. Look for the cheapest plan you would actually keep, not the headline price. SpicyChat's Get a Taste at $5.95 is the lowest monthly start among my top eight, Rubii Plus at $7.99 comes next, and HammerAI Starter at $9 is my pick for text roleplay value.

Talkie+ at $9.99 looks fair, but its prices come from outside sources, not an official page. Soulkyn is the outlier: the one officially confirmed plan, Deluxe, is €49.90 a month. Perchance needs no plan at all. My tip: pay for one month first, and only commit longer to an app you already like.

What adult access really costs

When you shop for a Character AI alternative that allows NSFW, price tells only half the story. The other half is whether adult content is there at all, and whether it sits behind a paywall.

Among my top eight, Talkie AI and Rubii list no adult content, so they are out for this purpose. SpicyChat, Nomi AI, Soulkyn, Perchance and HammerAI fit, and Candy AI keeps it to paid plans. Perchance is the cheapest by far, since the whole site is free and ad-supported.

HammerAI allows adult content, and its free tier gives 600 messages a day on cloud models, so text roleplay costs nothing to start. Soulkyn allows it too, but its free limits are unpublished and the confirmed plan is €49.90.

Further down the table, Uncensy allows adult content only on paid plans, starting with Spark at $7.99, so its 40 free messages a day are SFW. CrushChat, Backyard AI and WyvernChat allow it as well, and CrushChat's free plan gives up to 34 messages a day.

So if you are looking for the best free NSFW Character AI alternatives in 2026, my honest answer is SpicyChat, Perchance and HammerAI. For images on a paid plan, HammerAI Starter at $9 includes 1,500 credits, enough for 150 images, which I think is the fairest image deal in the top eight.

The feature grid right below, "The apps side by side", shows where each feature is included, limited or paid. My full category rankings show how these apps place on other lists, too.

Talkie AI or Rubii: how to pick between two clean hubs

These two share a lot: both are character hubs with roleplay, images and video, and neither lists adult content. The difference is how you pay and what you get.

Talkie AI has voice calls, which Rubii's record does not list, and a simple monthly plan at $9.99, though that price is not on an official page. Rubii starts cheaper at $7.99, gives free Rubies every day you log in, and publishes what its plans include. Its refund policy is also softer than Talkie AI's flat non-refundable rule.

My rule of thumb: if voice matters, pick Talkie AI. If you want clear numbers and images every day, pick Rubii. And if you would rather have the characters write long stories than chat, my NSFW AI story generator list covers that.

Which suits you: Talkie AI or Rubii?

Go with Talkie AI if

5.5/10, starts at $9.99/mo

  • You want voice calls with your characters
  • You like a character hub with a clean content level
  • A simple monthly plan suits you better than coins

Privacy and billing: what to know before you pay

Privacy is where these apps differ in quiet ways, and I think it deserves more attention than it gets. Two things matter most: who takes your money, and how easy it is to leave. Here is how five of them handle it:

  • Talkie AI: billed through the app marketplace, and you can only cancel there; fees are non-refundable.
  • Rubii: cancel through the app marketplace where you subscribed; refunds are judged case by case.
  • Soulkyn: web only, and its refund policy page could not be read, so the rules are not fully known.
  • Perchance: no account at all, which keeps things light, but no named company stands behind it.
  • HammerAI: billed through Gank, with no refunds once a purchase is complete.

Further down the table, PixelChat bills as NDAI.CHAT, the same line SpicyChat uses, which I'd call discreet since it does not spell out the app. Nomi AI shows NOMI.AI and Candy AI shows EverAI.

My opinion: Perchance is the most private start, simply because it never asks you to make an account. For any app with an account, assume what you type may be stored. Keep real names, addresses and your workplace out of your stories, and delete your account when you leave.

App store billing has one upside worth knowing: your statement shows the store, not the app. The downside is that cancelling happens in the store too, not inside the app, so note where you subscribed.

If you want to know where these facts come from, how I check the apps explains the method in a few minutes. For a pick focused on one steady free partner, my free AI girlfriend list is the next stop.

Common questions

What is the best free Character AI alternative?

For a completely free option, SpicyChat gives unlimited text chat on its Default model, and Perchance AI Character Chat gives unlimited messages and images with no account, both paid for by ads. HammerAI offers 600 messages a day on cloud models and free unlimited local chat in its desktop app. Backyard AI gives 300 messages a week with no card needed.

For free AI chats like Character AI with a polished feel, Talkie AI has a free tier too, though its limits are not officially published.

Is there a Character AI alternative with no filter?

Several apps on this list allow adult content: SpicyChat, Nomi AI, Soulkyn, Perchance, HammerAI, Backyard AI, WyvernChat and CrushChat. Candy AI and Uncensy allow it on paid plans only. Talkie AI and Rubii list no adult content. If you want the cheapest way in, Perchance is free and HammerAI's free tier gives 600 messages a day.

Which Character AI alternative has the best memory?

None is perfect, based on what outside reviews say. Nomi AI is the memory specialist here, reported to bring up older details on its own. Rubii's characters are reported to keep context across sessions. Perchance's memory held for 30-40 exchanges in one report but lost a plot point about 60 messages back.

HammerAI's free 8,192-token context made characters forget in long sessions, and paid plans raise it to 16,384 tokens and more. If memory is your priority, I'd start with Nomi AI, Rubii or a paid HammerAI plan.

Are there games like Character AI?

These are chat and roleplay apps rather than games, but several lean into scenes and group play. Soulkyn, Perchance, HammerAI, Backyard AI and WyvernChat all offer group chat, and HammerAI adds lorebooks for building a world around your characters. If you want story first, those are where I'd look.

Is there a Character AI alternative with personas?

Yes. PixelChat builds personas into its plans: Get a Taste at $5.95 a month allows 10 personas, True Supporter at $19.95 allows 50, and I'm All In at $29.95 allows 100. SpicyChat's plans use the same persona tiers. Every app on this list also lets you make your own characters.

Can I get a refund from these apps?

Mostly no, so I'd always start with one month. Talkie AI and Uncensy fees are non-refundable, HammerAI says all purchases are final, and PixelChat fees are non-refundable once used. Rubii judges requests case by case, and CrushChat's developer handles refunds personally. Backyard AI states no refund policy at all.
