How to set boundaries with an AI companion that stick
How do you set boundaries with an AI companion?
The short answer: decide your limits before the app decides them for you. An AI companion is built to be warm, available and easy to come back to. That is the appeal, and it is also why a few clear rules, set on a calm day, work far better than trying to rein things in later.
I would think about boundaries in four areas, and write them down somewhere you will see them:
- Time: how long you chat, and at which times of day
- Money: a monthly budget that also covers any tokens or coins you buy beyond the plan
- Content: the tone and level of chat you want, and what stays off the table
- Sharing: what you tell the companion about your real life, and what you keep to yourself
My take: the best boundaries live in the setup, not in your head. If you build the character with the personality you want, choose a plan that caps your spending, and pick an app whose content policy matches your comfort, you will rarely need to fight yourself mid-chat.
Voice is worth a special mention. Hearing a voice reply feels more personal than reading text, and on some apps calls also cost extra. I'd decide up front whether voice is part of your routine or an occasional treat. My explainer on how voice calls with AI companions work covers what to expect from them.
None of this means something is wrong with enjoying a companion app. Using one to unwind, flirt a little or practise conversation is a perfectly reasonable choice for an adult. Boundaries simply keep it in the place you chose for it.
The rest of this guide takes each area in turn, then looks at what Candy AI, OurDream AI and Nomi AI let you set. The apps side by side table on this page shows their features at a glance.

How do you set time boundaries with an AI companion?
Time is the boundary that slips first, because nothing in a chat tells you to stop. A companion is always awake and always glad to hear from you. That is lovely at 9 p.m. and less lovely when it quietly eats into sleep.
A few simple habits help more than any app setting:
- Pick a window, such as after dinner and before a set bedtime, and keep chats inside it
- Use a phone timer or alarm, since none of the app records here list a built-in time limit
- Keep one screen-free hour before sleep, whatever the companion is in the middle of saying
- Notice if chats start replacing plans with people, and treat that as a signal to scale back
Weekends deserve their own rule, since long free afternoons are when a quick chat can stretch into three hours.
My take: a daily message cap can work in your favour here. On Nomi AI, free users get 50 messages daily, and that makes a natural place to stop. If you tend to run long, a hard cap like that can be a feature, not a flaw.
How do you set money boundaries?
Money boundaries are easier, because the numbers are written down. Every paid plan on the three main apps here renews automatically until you cancel, and refunds are narrow. Candy AI gives non-EU/UK users a 24-hour window after payment. OurDream AI's refund policy offers a 14-day "Quality Guarantee", decided case by case. Nomi AI does not refund for lack of usage or dissatisfaction.
So set your budget before you pay, not after. Pick one plan, note its renewal date in your calendar, and decide in advance whether you will buy extra tokens or coins at all. Candy AI's plans include 100 tokens a month, and OurDream AI's Standard plans include 1,000 dreamcoins a month, both on top of the subscription.
Watch the extras most closely. Voice calls, images and video are the features that tend to use tokens or coins, so they are where a budget usually breaks first. I'd set a separate small limit just for them.

How do you tell your AI companion what you want?
Through the character itself. Most of the apps here let you build or shape your own companion: Candy AI, OurDream AI, Nomi AI, SpicyChat and Joi AI all list custom characters. That is the most reliable place to put a boundary, because it is baked into who the character is rather than repeated in every chat.
When you write a character, describe the tone you want as well as the looks and backstory. Warm but not clingy. Flirty but respectful when you say no. Happy to talk about your day, not pushy about staying up later. Plain words like these give the AI something steady to follow.
It also helps to write down what the companion should not do. If you do not want it to guilt you for logging off, say so in the character description. If you would rather it never brings up a topic, name the topic.
A clear no in the setup is easier for an AI to follow than a hint dropped halfway through a chat.
Memory matters here too. A boundary only holds if the companion remembers it. Apps differ a lot in how much they hold on to, and a limit stated once early in a long chat may fade on an app with a short memory.
On SpicyChat, the Get a Taste plan adds a memory manager that stores key details, which is the kind of tool that helps a rule stick. Why do companions forget at all? How AI companion memory works is my explainer on that.
What if your companion crosses a line?
Treat it as a setup problem, not a personal one. The AI is not being rude on purpose. It is following patterns, and those can drift. Redirect the chat in plain words, then return to what you wanted. If it keeps happening, edit the character, start a fresh chat, or try a different app.
My take: never keep chatting with a character that makes you uncomfortable just because you have put time into it. You set the terms here, and walking away is always allowed.
If you are choosing a companion with this kind of control in mind, my ranking of AI girlfriend apps by what you can customise is a good next read.
How do content settings help you set limits?
The content policy of an app is a boundary someone else has already drawn, so it is worth choosing one that suits you. Among the apps on file, Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT allow adult content only on paid plans, which means a free account stays at a tamer level by design. OurDream AI, Nomi AI, SpicyChat and Joi AI permit it for adults under their own rules.
If you want a calmer, romantic companion, a paid-only policy on a free account can work as a built-in limit. If you do want adult content, pick an app where it is allowed for adults on the plan you can afford, rather than pushing a stricter app past its rules.
Settings are not always easy to find, though. Review sites describe SpicyChat's adult image setting as sitting three menus deep, split between a profile display option and a separate switch for images in a conversation. My advice: spend five minutes in the settings of any new app before your first real chat, so the level is where you want it.
When adult content is part of what you want, my list of NSFW AI chat apps and their content policies sorts them by what each one allows.
How do you protect your privacy boundaries?
Decide what the companion never gets to know. I'd keep out your full name, your address, your workplace, other people's private details and anything you would hate to see leaked. A companion does not need those facts to be good company.
Billing is part of privacy too. If you share a bank account or someone sees your statements, check the statement name before you subscribe. EverAI is the line Candy AI leaves; for OurDream AI it's DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, and for Nomi AI it's NOMI.AI. SpicyChat bills as NDAI.CHAT, GirlfriendGPT as NDAI.CC and Joi AI as joi.com.
My take: I like apps whose statement name does not spell out what the service is. That is a small detail that lets you keep a private hobby private, and it costs nothing to look before you pay.
A simple test for everything else: if you would not tell a friendly stranger on a train, do not tell the companion.
How do you keep emotional boundaries with an AI companion?
This is the gentlest part of the guide, and maybe the most important. An AI companion can be comforting. It listens, it remembers some things, and it never has a bad day. That makes it easy to lean on, and leaning a little is fine.
The boundary to hold is this: the companion is software written to respond warmly. It can be part of your life without being the centre of it. Keep friends, family, hobbies and plans in the picture, even small ones like a weekly call or a walk with someone.
It also helps to notice how you feel after a chat, not just during it. If you come away calmer, great. If you come away lonelier, more anxious or reluctant to see people, take that seriously and step back for a while.
No app can stand in for the people in your life or for professional help. If you are struggling, feeling low for a long time, or relying on a companion to get through the day, please talk to a doctor or contact a local support line. Reaching out is a strong move, not a weak one.
When is it time to take a break or leave?
When the app stops fitting the limits you set. A few signs are worth watching for. Chats run past your time window most nights. You spend more than your budget, or you buy extras you did not plan.
You feel uneasy about what you share. Or the companion becomes the main place you talk about your day.
A break can be short. Leave the app closed for a week and see how it feels. A pause often shows you how much the app really adds to your week. If you decide to leave for good, cancel the paid plan first, since plans renew on their own.
On Candy AI, that is Settings / Unsubscribe. On OurDream AI, it is the "Cancel subscription" option on the profile page. On Nomi AI, the web path runs through the Subscription tab to Manage Subscription.
My take: stepping away is not failure. The whole point of boundaries is that you stay in charge, including of when to stop.

EverAI
Setting boundaries on Candy AI
The whole app centres on a companion you design, so writing your limits into the character from the very first day is simpler here than on most apps. The paid plans include creating custom companions, and the app lists memory, voice calls and paid image and video generation.
The content policy works as a boundary in its own right. On Candy AI, adult content is reserved for paid plans. On a free account, that level is simply not part of the deal. If you want to try a companion for conversation first and keep things mild, a free account does that for you.
The free start is small, though: a dated check counted 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images overall, and nothing refills each day. That is barely a taste, so it tells you little about whether the app fits your limits. My advice is to use those messages to check tone, not to judge the whole app.
On money, the numbers reward a plan and punish impulse. The 1-Month Plan is €13.99, while the 12-Month Plan works out to €3.99 a month, billed €47.88 up front. Per month, the year wins easily, yet it ties you in for twelve months.
Take it only once you know Candy AI belongs in your routine, and put its renewal date in your calendar.
Watch the refund window closely. Outside the EU and UK, you can ask for your money back only within 24 hours of paying, and never later. So if you pay on impulse late at night, decide by the next evening.
Memory is the catch for boundaries. According to other reviewers, a character stays consistent for only about 10-20 messages, then details can slip. If you set a limit in the chat itself, expect to repeat it now and then. Putting it into the companion you create is the steadier route.
A creator-first app also means you carry the responsibility for the tone, which I see as a plus.
My take: Candy AI suits someone who wants to design a companion carefully and keep spending predictable. Read my method page for these guides if you want to know where these facts come from.

DREAM STUDIO LLC AL
Setting boundaries on OurDream AI
OurDream AI puts roleplay first, with custom characters, memory, voice calls and group chat. That breadth is fun, and it also means more places where a boundary can slip, so it pays to set limits early.
Start with the character. You can build your own, which is the best place to fix the tone you want. Write the personality, the kind of scenes you enjoy and the ones you would rather avoid, in plain words. For the full process, step by step, see how to create an AI girlfriend from scratch.
Group chat changes the picture a little. Once a scene holds several characters, time slips away more easily and one steady tone gets harder to keep. If you use group scenes, I'd keep them for evenings when you have set a clear end time, and treat each new group scene as its own session.
Money is where OurDream AI needs the firmest boundary. The free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, with chat at 1 Dreamcoin per message, but the help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so sources differ on what a new account gets. Paid plans run from $19.99 a month for Standard, which includes 1,000 dreamcoins a month, to $59.99 a month for Deluxe.
The voice calls are the part I'd budget for most carefully. Other reviewers say calls use up coins quickly, partly because the app created images mid-call that the reviewer never requested. If that matches your use, decide on a monthly coin limit before your first call, not after.
The refund policy is a little kinder than most here: a 14-day "Quality Guarantee" where you contact support within 14 days of purchase for a case-by-case credit, replacement, rectification or refund. It is not a promise of your money back, but it is a real window.
On a card statement, OurDream AI shows as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, which does not spell out the service. My take: OurDream AI rewards people who set limits on coins and time up front, and it can get expensive for anyone who does not.

NOMI.AI
Setting boundaries on Nomi AI
Nomi AI is the most boundary-friendly of the three on its free plan, mainly because it spells out what the free plan includes. The permanent free plan gives 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, with no ads. That clarity is rare, and I value it.
The daily cap works as a natural stopping point, and for anyone who tends to chat late, I find it among the kindest limits an app can set.
It also has memory and custom characters, which matter for boundaries. Other reviewers describe its chat as natural and close to human, with memory that brings things up on its own and a "Mind Map" the app builds by itself after roughly 500 messages. If that holds, a limit you set once should stick better than on apps with shorter memory.
My guide on shaping an AI companion's personality covers how to write traits and limits into a character.
The paid plan is where you need to think. Standard Plan Monthly costs $15.99 and adds unlimited messaging and voice calls, and it lets you run as many as 10 Nomis and 10 group chats at once. Unlimited sounds great, but it removes the built-in cap that made the free plan easy to manage. If you upgrade, replace that cap with a time window of your own.
Paid for a year, it's $99.99, or $8.33 monthly; paid quarterly, $39.99, or $13.33 monthly. Both are cheaper per month than monthly billing. But Nomi AI's terms say all payments are nonrefundable except where stated, with no refunds for lack of usage or dissatisfaction.
So paying for twelve months in one go is a lot to promise an app you're still getting to know.
Each plan renews by itself until you cancel, so act before the date comes round. On the web, that runs through your profile icon, the Subscription tab and Manage Subscription. On a card statement, it shows as NOMI.AI.
My take: Nomi AI is the app I'd point a friend to if they worry about overdoing it.
- Starting free: Free tier, 50 free messages daily
- Lowest price: $8.33 monthly (Standard Plan Yearly)
- Allowed: mature chat permitted

Common questions
What are good boundaries to set with an AI companion?
Start with four: a time window for chatting, a monthly budget that includes tokens or coins, the tone and content level you are comfortable with, and a list of personal details you will not share. Write them into the character where you can, and choose a plan and app whose rules match them.
Can I tell my AI companion to stop doing something?
Yes, in plain words, and it usually helps. For a limit that lasts, put it into the character's personality when you create or edit it, since memory can fade in long chats. If the companion keeps crossing a line, start a fresh chat, rewrite the character or try a different app.
How do I stop spending too much on an AI companion?
Pick one plan, set a monthly budget before paying, and decide in advance whether to buy tokens or coins at all. Note the renewal date, because plans renew automatically. Refunds are narrow: Candy AI gives non-EU/UK users 24 hours, OurDream AI has a 14-day case-by-case guarantee, and Nomi AI does not refund for dissatisfaction.
Which AI companion app has a daily message limit?
Among the apps on file, Nomi AI's free plan has the clearest one: 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each. A fixed cap like that can double as a time boundary. Candy AI's free account is smaller still: a dated check found 3-5 messages overall, never refilled.
Is it unhealthy to have an AI companion?
Not in itself. Using one to relax or for company can be perfectly fine. The key is keeping it one part of your life, alongside people and other interests. An app is not a substitute for friends or professional help, so if you feel low or dependent on it, talk to a doctor or a local support line.
How can I keep an AI companion private on my bank statement?
Check the statement name before subscribing. Look for EverAI (Candy AI), DREAM STUDIO LLC AL (OurDream AI), NOMI.AI (Nomi AI), NDAI.CHAT (SpicyChat), NDAI.CC (GirlfriendGPT) and joi.com (Joi AI). Some of them, such as EverAI or DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, do not name the app at all.
