Does Character AI use water? The honest answer

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Does Character AI use water at all?

Here is my honest starting point: nothing in the records behind this site says how much water Character AI uses, or whether its operator, Character Technologies, Inc., reports it anywhere. No figure per message, per day or per year. Saying so openly beats passing off a guess as a fact.

What I can say in general terms is simple. Every reply from an AI chat app is produced by computers somewhere, and computers need electricity and cooling. How much water that cooling takes depends on where the servers run and how they're cooled, and none of that is on file for Character AI.

So the same app could have a very different footprint depending on choices users never see. That's exactly why one official figure would beat a dozen clever estimates, and why I won't offer one of my own.

So here is where the facts stand, split into what is known and what isn't:

  • Known: Character AI is available in a browser and on iOS and Android, with a free plan and paid tiers
  • Known: the free plan uses slow mode at high load, so demand clearly strains capacity at times
  • Not known: any water or energy figure from the company
  • Not known: where its servers are, or how they are cooled

My take: a question this reasonable deserves a real number, and it's a shame there isn't one to give you. Until the company publishes something, treat every confident claim with a raised eyebrow.

If the footprint question has you rethinking the app altogether, you might also want to tidy up before you go. My guide on clearing out your Character AI conversations covers that step.

The apps side by side, right after this section, compare Character AI with other companion apps on price and features. None of them lists a water figure either.

How much water does Character AI use per message?

There's no official answer, and that's the whole answer. No per-message figure is on file from Character AI, and I won't borrow one from somewhere else and stick the app's name on it.

You may still have seen a number. Estimates for AI chat in general do circulate, and they get shared as if they applied to every app. My view is that a figure like that tells you very little about one specific service unless it states where it comes from. Before I'd trust any per-message water number, I'd want to see:

  • Who calculated it, and whether that is the company itself
  • Which app, model and data centres it covers
  • Whether it counts water used on site, for power generation, or both
  • What period it describes, since hardware and cooling change over time

A number missing those details is a rough guess at best. That doesn't make the concern silly. It just means the honest reply, for now, is "unknown".

How much water does Character AI use per day?

This is even harder to pin down, because a daily figure depends on how many people chat and how much. The records hold no usage totals for Character AI either, so a daily water figure would be a guess stacked on a guess.

What the records do show is that demand is high enough to matter. The free plan promises unlimited messaging for all users, and at high load it switches to slow mode, with reduced response speed. That tells me busy periods push the service hard, which is exactly when any footprint would be largest. But it's a clue about demand, not a measurement of water.

If you ever see a per-day figure pinned to Character AI, ask whether it comes with a usage total. Without one, the math can't work, because a daily figure is really a per-message figure multiplied by the messages sent. Neither half is on record, so neither is the result.

If you're weighing the app as a whole, water included, my full review of Character AI covers the parts that are on record: plans, memory, voices and characters. The feature table right below lines up what each app includes.

Do other companion apps publish their water or energy use?

Not in anything on file. The question matters for rivals too, because if one app were open about its footprint, that would be a real reason to prefer it. None of the five other apps on this page has a water or energy figure in its record.

What the records do show is who runs each app and where the company is registered. That is not the same as where the servers are, so please don't read these as data-centre locations:

  • Candy AI: EverAI Limited, registered in Malta
  • Nomi AI: Glimpse.ai, Inc., incorporated in Maryland, with its base in Baltimore
  • OurDream AI: Dream Studio USA, Inc.
  • SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT: both NextDay AI, with companies in Quebec, Delaware and Cyprus

So switching apps won't give you a greener option you can verify. Every app here is in the same position as Character AI: no published figure, as far as the records go. If the environment is your deciding factor, none of them earns a point over the others, and that includes the paid ones.

It's worth adding that company registration says little about infrastructure. A business registered in Malta or Quebec could run its servers anywhere, and the records don't say where any of these apps do. So even a rule of thumb like "pick an app based somewhere cooler" has nothing to stand on here. I'd rather admit that than hand you a shortcut that sounds clever and means nothing.

My honest opinion is that this is an industry-wide gap rather than one company's failing. Companion apps publish prices, plans and content policies in detail, which is great, but none of the six on this page shares footprint data. I'd love to see one of them go first. It would be a genuine selling point, and a welcome one.

In the meantime, pick an app for the reasons that are on record: what it allows, what it costs and what the free plan gives. If you want a ranked comparison built on those facts, my shortlist of Character AI alternatives is a good place to start. The box right below sums up OurDream AI, which leans heavily on images and video.

What can you do if the footprint worries you?

Quite a bit, even without a number. None of it needs a measured figure, and all of it is sensible whatever the true total turns out to be.

The first step is asking the source. Character Technologies, Inc. is the company behind Character AI, and questions about its operations are best put to it directly through its help centre. I'd like to think that enough polite questions get a reply. Only an answer from them would give you a figure that truly applies to the app you use.

The second step is not paying for more than you use. If you pay $9.99 a month for c.ai+ yet only open the app once a week, the free plan covers you with unlimited messaging and ads. That saves money at the very least, and it's a good habit for anyone trying to consume a little more carefully.

Third, think about the extras. OurDream AI, in the box above, bundles image and video generation into its paid plans, and Deluxe Annual lists 50 videos a month. I'm not going to guess what each one costs the planet, because nothing on file says.

But if you're trying to keep your footprint modest, choosing only the features you'll actually enjoy is a fair rule for any app.

Fourth, keep one app rather than three. If you're paying for several companion apps at once, settling on the one you actually enjoy saves money for certain, and it can't hurt the footprint either.

Fifth, close accounts you no longer use. An old subscription you've forgotten keeps billing you, and that alone is reason enough to tidy up. If you're on a web plan, the route to cancel Character AI is Settings, then Account, then Manage, which opens the Customer Portal.

What I wouldn't do is feel guilty about every message. Chatting with a character you like is a perfectly normal way to spend an evening, and one person's chats are a tiny share of any service this size. Make the choices that are easy for you, and put the bigger question to the companies who can actually answer it.

Why doesn't this page just give you a number?

Because the only honest number I have is none. Every fact on this site comes from official pages, a dated free-tier check, or other reviewers' reports, and a water figure for Character AI isn't in any of them. When a fact is missing, I say so rather than estimate. That rule is the same on every page, including this one.

Prices, free allowances and content policies get exactly the same treatment, which is why they read the same wherever they appear. The day an official water figure appears, it would be added here with its source, and this page would change to match.

I know that can be frustrating. You typed a clear question, and a clear number would feel more satisfying than "unknown". But a made-up figure would be worse than none. It would get quoted, shared and repeated until it looked official, and it would still be made up.

If you're curious how the facts on this site are gathered and weighed, the way apps are checked here explains the sources, the scores and what counts as on record.

How should you judge a figure you find somewhere else?

You'll probably keep searching for how much water does Character AI use, and you'll find answers. Here's how I'd read them.

Start with the source. A figure from Character Technologies, Inc. itself would be worth taking seriously, even if it was rough. A figure from an article about AI in general is a different thing. It may be careful and well-meant, but it isn't about this app, and applying it to Character AI is someone else's assumption.

Next, look at the date and the scope. AI hardware changes quickly, and a number from a few years ago may describe a very different setup. And check whether it counts only the data centre or the power station behind it as well, since those can be very different totals.

Finally, be wary of anything suspiciously precise. A figure down to the millilitre, with no method attached, is precision without evidence. When the method is missing, I'd treat the number as a conversation starter rather than a fact.

Is Character AI still worth using if you care about the environment?

That's your call, and there's no wrong answer. What I can do is set out the trade honestly. On one side, there's no water or energy figure on file, so you can't measure the cost.

On the other, the app gives a lot for free: unlimited messaging for all users, custom characters, group chat and voices, on web, iOS and Android.

If you're someone who likes to act on evidence, the lack of a figure may be enough reason to use the app a little less, or to ask the company about it. If you're comfortable with a hobby that has an unknown footprint, like most things we do online, Character AI remains a strong free option. Both positions are reasonable. What I wouldn't do is let a viral number, with no source, make the decision for you.

There's also a middle path. Keep Character AI for the chats you really enjoy, skip paid extras you won't use, and close the app when the story is done rather than leaving it open all evening. That's a small, sensible adjustment whatever the true footprint is, and it costs you nothing.

Which Character AI questions do have clear answers?

Plenty, and they're often the ones that matter more for your day-to-day. Price is one. The free plan costs nothing, while paid options run from (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month up to c.ai+ at $9.99 a month, or $94.99 for the annual plan. Billing is another: plans renew by themselves, and refunds happen only where the law demands one.

Content is a third. Character AI's policy allows no adult content on any plan, and paying doesn't change it. My look at Character AI's adult-content rules goes through the policy properly.

Memory is a fourth, and there the picture is mixed. Paid plans include 30 memory pins, and other reviewers report strong recall of buried facts but also invented details delivered with the same confidence.

That's the useful contrast on this page. On water, the records are silent. On nearly everything else you might ask about Character AI, they speak clearly, and that's where I'd put my attention.

Common questions

Does Character AI use water?

No water figure for Character AI is on file in the records behind this site. In general, AI apps run on servers that need power and cooling, and some cooling uses water, but how much Character AI uses depends on details its operator, Character Technologies, Inc., has not put on record here.

Is there a per-message water figure for Character AI?

There is no official per-message figure on file. Numbers that circulate online are usually estimates for AI chat in general, not measurements of Character AI. Before trusting one, look for who calculated it, which app and data centres it covers, and what period it describes.

What about Character AI's daily water use?

Unknown. A daily figure would need both usage totals and a per-message figure, and the records hold neither for Character AI. What is on file is that the free plan uses slow mode at high load, which shows heavy demand at busy times but measures nothing about water.

Does c.ai+ use more resources than the free plan?

Nothing on file says so. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month removes ads and slow mode and adds unlimited premium chat styles and 30 memory pins. Whether any of that changes the footprint of your chats is not something the records address.

Is any AI companion app greener than Character AI?

None that can be shown from the records. Candy AI, Nomi AI, OurDream AI, SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT have no water or energy figures on file either. Choose an app on what is on record: its content policy, its price and its free plan.

Who can answer the water question for Character AI?

Only the company. Character AI is run by Character Technologies, Inc., and a figure from the operator itself would be the one worth trusting. Its help centre is the place to ask about how the service runs.
