How to take filter off Character AI: the honest answer

Paying more buys fewer ads, memory pins and faster replies. It does not buy a different content level.

I know that's not the answer most people hoped for when they typed the question. My take is that it's still the useful one, because it saves you an evening of hunting for a feature that isn't there.

Here is what the settings on file actually let you adjust:

• Model Improvement, where people in the EEA or UK can untick "Improve the Model for Everyone"
• Up to 30 memory pins on (c.ai) lite or c.ai+
• Chat customization, listed as a (c.ai) lite perk
• Delete Account, under Manage Account & Data on the web

None of those touches the filter. So if the content level is what matters to you, the honest move is a different app, not a workaround. The table right below, "The apps side by side", puts Character AI next to five apps with their own content policies, so you can see which ones allow adult content and which of them want a subscription before they do.

I also like that the comparison makes the free side obvious. Two of those apps let you start without paying, which is how I'd want anyone to try a new companion: low stakes, no card, no pressure.

If you decide to leave, tidy up before you go. I'd start with my steps for deleting Character AI chats, since account deletion on Character AI is permanent and cannot be reversed. Better to choose what goes than to lose it by accident.

Charms, the in-app currency sold in packs from $0.99 to $99.99, go on things like temporary ad-free passes and Imagine Chat images, not on a looser filter.

What I appreciate is that the app is generous inside those rules. The company pitches the app as interactive entertainment for connecting, learning and storytelling, and the free feature list backs that up:

• Messaging without limits on the Free plan, with ads, plus slow mode when traffic is heavy
• Your own characters, with personalities, backstories and even voices
• Group chats with several characters and other people in the same room
• Live voice calls, plus the separate Imagine Chat tool for pictures

If your stories are romantic, dramatic or just silly, that's a lot to work with for $0. I also like that you design the character yourself instead of picking from presets built for one assumed type of user. The stakes are bigger than they look. Your characters, your group chats and your whole history sit on that one account. Money spent on c.ai+ isn't refunded unless the law requires it, so I wouldn't count on getting money back for months you can no longer use.

My advice is simple: treat the filter as part of what Character AI is. Enjoy it for what it does well, and if you want a different content level, go where the policy already allows it. That costs you nothing but a new sign-up.

• OurDream AI allows it on every plan. Sign-up is free with 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, though its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so that number may change.
• Nomi AI allows it on every plan and has an indefinite free plan of 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each.
• SpicyChat allows it on every plan; even on the Free plan, text chat on the Default model has no cap, though you'll see ads and may wait in a queue.
• Candy AI keeps it behind its paid plans. Free accounts get 3-5 messages overall, which makes the 1-Month Plan, at €13.99, where you actually begin.
• GirlfriendGPT keeps it for paying members: its Premium plan at $15.00 a month lists NSFW chat among its perks.

My pick for a first step is Nomi AI or SpicyChat, because both let you see how they feel before any money moves. With 50 messages daily, you'll know soon enough if a character's personality clicks. SpicyChat's free text chat has no stated cap, but expect ads.

If you're happy to pay from day one, Candy AI's 12-Month Plan works out to €3.99 a month, billed €47.88 upfront. That's cheap per month, but it's a year of commitment, so I'd only take it once you're sure.

One thing I like across this group: every one of these five apps lets you build your own companion in some form, which matters if the defaults don't look like the person you want to talk to. GirlfriendGPT limits that on its free tier, the others list it as a feature.

The plans change a few things around the edges. The Free plan runs on two chat models, PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with full ads and slow mode when it's busy. (c.ai) lite, from $4.99 a month with pricing that varies by region, gives you some premium chat-style messages each day, fewer ads and 30 memory pins.

At $9.99 a month, c.ai+ drops the ads and slow mode and brings unlimited premium chat styles plus the highest daily limits. Nothing on file says any of those relaxes the content rules.

My honest opinion on the paid tiers: (c.ai) lite is the one I'd look at if ads and slow mode bother you, since it's half the price of c.ai+. Paid yearly, c.ai+ is $94.99, about $7.92 a month, a fair price if you already live in the app. I'd skip both if your only reason to pay is hoping the filter loosens. It won't.

Memory is the other lever. Memory pins let a character hold on to details you care about, though other reviewers report long conversations still getting tangled, with a promise dropped ten messages on. If that's right, pins are worth using for names, preferences and anything you'd hate to repeat.

Privacy is a real consideration too. Character AI says it retains some data you share to help train its models, and only people in the EEA or UK get the opt-out on file. If that bothers you, keep personal details out of the chat whatever plan you're on.

A different content level is not on that list, and nothing official suggests it's coming with a subscription.

The same goes for Charms. Six pack sizes sit on the App Store from $0.99 to $99.99, and the store doesn't say how many Charms each pack holds. If you can't see what a pack buys, I'd leave it alone, and certainly wouldn't buy one hoping for fewer limits on content.

There's one more money catch to know about. Other reviewers report a credit and a debit card being declined at c.ai+ checkout for three weeks while the same cards worked elsewhere. If that happens to you, I wouldn't keep retrying. Take it as a sign to decide whether you want to pay here at all.

Start with your data. On the web, the Model Improvement opt-out for EEA and UK residents sits under Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data, and deleting the account happens in that same area. Deletion is permanent, and the help article gives no time window for when it completes.

Then think about how the new app shows up on your bank statement. Candy AI bills as EverAI, Nomi AI as NOMI.AI, SpicyChat as NDAI.CHAT, GirlfriendGPT as NDAI.CC and OurDream AI as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL. Only NOMI.AI carries the app's own name. The rest say nothing about what the service is, which I count as a plus for discretion.

Finally, compare cancel paths before you subscribe anywhere. Candy AI lets you cancel under Settings / Unsubscribe in your account, while SpicyChat sends you from Profile > Manage Subscription to its payment platform, and benefits last to the end of the paid period. It helps to understand the business side too. None of those income lines depends on a looser filter, which is part of why I wouldn't hold my breath.

My view: if you like the characters, the group chats and the free unlimited messaging, stay and enjoy them for what they are. If the filter is the deal-breaker for you, sitting tight for a policy change is a poor plan.

If you want romance, drama and big casts of characters for free, Character AI is still one of the easiest places to start. The free plan has no published message cap, which few apps can say.

If you want adult content, pick an app whose policy allows it and start on its free plan where one exists. Nomi AI's 50 messages a day and SpicyChat's unlimited free text chat are the low-risk ways in. OurDream AI starts you with 55 Dreamcoins, with the caveat that its help centre says free dreamcoins aren't currently offered.

If you'd rather pay for a polished paid experience, Candy AI allows adult content on its paid plans, and per month, its 12-Month Plan costs the least. Just be sure before you commit to a year, and check the refund window: non-EU and UK users get 24 hours after payment to ask.

Whatever you choose, keep your personal details light in any chat, and pick the app whose rules already fit you.
