Is Character AI 18+ now? The honest answer
Is Character AI 18+ now, or is that just a store label?
No. On the records I have, Character AI has not turned into an adults-only app. Its general minimum age is 13, and 16 for people who live in the EU. What most people notice is the Apple App Store age rating, which shows 18+.
That label is Apple's own content rating for the store listing, not a Character AI rule about who may sign up.
I understand the mix-up. You see "18+" next to the app icon and assume the company changed its policy. My take: read the company's own terms before you trust a store badge. The two can say different things, and here they do.
Here is what the records say, put next to each other:
- Minimum age set by Character AI: 13, or 16 in the EU
- Age rating in the Apple App Store: 18+, category Entertainment
- How the check works: age assurance through Persona, an identity assurance provider
- Content level on file: no adult content, on any plan
So why is Character AI 18+ now in so many people's eyes? Mostly that badge, plus an age check that shows up more often. Character AI says the app will usually ask for age verification when it needs it, and anyone can also start it in Settings > Advanced > Verify Age, on web and mobile.
If the whole thing makes you want to leave rather than stay, tidy up first. My walkthrough for clearing out your Character AI chats covers what you can remove before you go. Account deletion on Character AI is permanent and cannot be reversed, so make that call slowly.
The table right after this section, "The apps side by side", sets Character AI next to apps that do allow adult content under their policies, so you can see where each one draws its line.
| App | Free option | Lowest monthly cost | Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character AI | Yes | $4.99 | Unconfirmed |
| Candy AI | Yes | €3.99 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| OurDream AI | Yes | $9.99 | Mature chat permitted |
| Nomi AI | Yes | $8.33 | Mature chat permitted |
| GirlfriendGPT | Yes | $12.00 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| SpicyChat | Yes | $5.00 | Mature chat permitted |
Is Character AI NSFW now?
No. The content policy on file for Character AI allows no adult content, and nothing in the records ties that to a plan. Free, (c.ai) lite (from $4.99 monthly) and c.ai+ ($9.99 monthly) all sit under the same line. So the Apple badge doesn't open anything new inside the app. It's a store rating, and the app's own rules still apply.
Here's the part I actually like. A clear "none" is easier to plan around than a vague "some content, sometimes". You know before you start that fully explicit text is not what Character AI is for, whichever subscription you choose.
What paying changes is comfort, not the content level:
- Free: PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr with no message cap, plus full ads and slow mode
- (c.ai) lite from $4.99 a month: some premium chat-style messages each day, fewer ads, 30 memory pins
- c.ai+ for $9.99 monthly: no ads, unlimited premium chat styles, no slow mode, premium support
- c.ai+ Annual at $94.99 a year, which the pricing page shows as a 21% saving
Why is the Character AI filter so sensitive now?
The records don't date a policy change, so I can't confirm the filter got stricter on a certain day. What the records do show is a policy of "none" on a service open to everyone who meets its minimum age. My reading, and it's only a reading: a filter built for an audience that wide will lean careful, and stories you think are harmless can still trip it.
Other reviewers report that filters, memory slips and ads keep Character AI from being perfect, while still calling it one of the best free options for character chat. That matches the picture I get from the facts: generous on messaging, strict on content.
My advice if the filter keeps cutting into your stories: don't pay hoping it relaxes. None of the plan descriptions on file lists a looser content level, so a subscription buys fewer ads and more premium messages, nothing else.
For memory pins, voice calls, group chat and every plan in detail, my full Character AI review goes through the whole app. The feature table below shows how it compares on features with the other apps here.

Where can adults go if they want adult content instead?
If you came here hoping "18+ now" meant a looser Character AI, it doesn't, and I'd rather you switch apps than fight the rules. Five apps on this page have policies that allow adult content. For a Character AI fan, though, the question is which one keeps what you liked: characters, group scenes and free messaging.
Here's how I'd sort them for someone leaving Character AI:
- SpicyChat: allows adult content, has group chat and custom characters, and its free plan keeps text chat unlimited, with ads and possible waiting lines. The closest feel to what you're leaving.
- OurDream AI: allows adult content and lists group chat and voice calls. The free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, but its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so that number may change.
- Nomi AI: adult content is allowed, and the free plan never expires: 50 messages a day, no ads. Group chat comes with the paid Standard plan at $15.99 a month.
- Candy AI: adult content on paid plans only. The 1-Month Plan is €13.99, and the 12-month plan works out to €3.99 a month in its current offer.
- GirlfriendGPT: adult content on paid plans only, starting with Premium at $15.00 a month.
My pick for most Character AI refugees is SpicyChat. You keep a big-hub feel, free text chat without a published daily cap, and group chat, and if you want the ads gone, paying begins at $5.95 a month.
If you mostly chatted one-to-one with a single favourite character, Nomi AI is the calmer choice: fewer messages a day, but no ads on the free plan and memory built into the product.
What I'd skip at first is paying Candy AI or GirlfriendGPT straight away. Both put adult content behind a subscription, so their free start shows you little of the part you're moving for.
My ranking of Character AI alternatives goes deeper, sorted by how close each app stays to the character-hub experience. The box below sums up OurDream AI, which suits you if voice calls matter as much as text.

How does the Character AI age check work?
Character AI calls its process "age assurance", and describes it as its way of confirming the age of all users on the platform. It has partnered with Persona, an identity assurance provider, to handle all age assurance attempts. So the check itself isn't run by Character AI's own staff but by that outside provider.
I think that's worth knowing before the prompt appears, because whatever you share during the check goes to Persona as the provider handling it.
There are two ways it starts. Character AI says the app will usually bring the check up by itself when one is needed, which means you may see it in the middle of normal use. You can also start it yourself in Settings > Advanced > Verify Age, and that path is listed for both web and mobile.
What the records don't include is just as important. There's no list on file of which documents Persona asks for, how long a check takes or what happens to the data afterwards. I won't guess at any of that.
If you care about those details, and I think you should, read the Persona step carefully when it appears and look for the privacy terms it links to before you upload anything.
My honest opinion on the check: it's reasonable for a service with a minimum age of 13, or 16 in the EU, to confirm who is using it. It's also fair to feel uneasy about handing identity details to a third party. Both can be true.
If the second feeling wins, that's a perfectly valid reason to choose a different app rather than skip the step.
One thing I won't do is explain how to get around the check. Trying to dodge it goes against the terms and puts the account at risk, along with every character and conversation on it. This page is for adults deciding what to do, and the honest choices are simple: complete the check when asked, or leave.
If you have a question this page doesn't cover, such as cancelling c.ai+ or where your data goes, my help section collects short answers in one place. It's the quickest way to find the right guide without reading every page.

Did Character AI change its age rules recently?
Not on anything I can show you. The records hold a general minimum age of 13, and 16 for EU citizens and residents, taken from the official help article and the eligibility clause in the terms. They don't hold a date when that changed, an announcement of a new rule or any sign that the company raised its minimum age.
That's why I keep coming back to the difference between the company and the store. Apple rates the app 18+ in the Entertainment category. Character AI's own terms set a lower age. When those two disagree, the company's terms decide who may sign up, and the store rating only describes how Apple labels the app.
If you read a headline saying the app is "adults only now", ask where it comes from. My advice is to trust the official help centre over social posts, and to check it again yourself before a decision that costs money. A rule on file today can change tomorrow, and nothing here predicts that.
What happens to your chats while you decide?
This part matters whether you stay or go. Character AI states that it keeps some of what you share so it can train and improve its AI models. In other words, your conversations can feed its training unless you opt out, and the opt-out on file is for users in the EEA and UK only.
On the app it sits under Settings > Data & Privacy. The web path is Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Model Improvement, where you uncheck "Improve the Model for Everyone". Even then, Character AI says your data can still feed search, recommendations and safety classifiers.
I don't love that the opt-out covers only some regions. If you're outside the EEA and UK, the realistic choice is to keep personal details out of chats, or delete the account. Deletion is permanent, and the help article doesn't give a time window for when it completes.
The free plan runs on ads, and my guide on how Character AI makes money explains the business side. For how facts like these are sourced and dated on this site, see how the apps here are checked.
Should an adult stay on Character AI anyway?
For a lot of people, yes. The age question and the content question are separate, and being over 18 doesn't make Character AI a worse app for you. It stays one of the few services on this page with unlimited free messaging, ads included.
It also lists voice calls, group chat and character creation tools that let you design personalities, backstories and even voices.
Stay if your stories live in drama, adventure, comedy or slow-burn romance, and you're fine with a filter that keeps things clean. For that kind of reader, the free plan is hard to beat, and paying $9.99 monthly for c.ai+ mostly buys you no ads, no slow mode and more premium chat styles.
Leave if fully explicit text is what you want. No plan on file changes the content level. Pick an app whose policy allows adult content and start on its free plan before paying anyone.
My verdict on the "18+ now" question
Character AI is not 18+ by its own rules. The minimum age on file is 13, or 16 in the EU, and the 18+ you've seen is Apple's store rating. The content policy allows no adult content, on free or paid plans, and the stricter feel people describe comes with an age check run through Persona.
What I'd tell a friend: don't read too much into the badge, complete the check if the app asks and you're comfortable with it, and switch apps if the content line is the real problem. For the full story on the content rules, my explainer on Character AI and NSFW goes into that question alone.
And if you're staying, set the training opt-out if you're in the EEA or UK. It takes nothing away from the chat, and you control it directly.
One last practical point for anyone on a paid plan who decides to go. Cancel c.ai+ before you delete anything: on the web through Settings > Account > Manage and the Customer Portal link sent by email, or through Apple or Google Play if you subscribed in an app store. Character AI keeps what you've paid unless the law says otherwise, so timing the cancel before the next renewal is what saves you money.
Common questions
Is Character AI 18+ now?
Not by its own rules. The records show a general minimum age of 13, and 16 for people in the EU, from the official help article and the terms. The 18+ you may have seen is the Apple App Store age rating, which is Apple's content label for the listing, not a Character AI policy about who may sign up.
Why is Character AI 18+ on the App Store?
Apple gives every app its own age rating, and it rates Character AI 18+ in the Entertainment category. That is a store decision, separate from the company's terms. The records don't include Apple's reasons for the rating, so I won't guess at them.
Is Character AI NSFW now?
No. The content policy on file allows no adult content, and that applies to the free plan, (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ alike. Paying removes ads and slow mode and adds premium chat styles, but no plan description lists a looser content level.
How does Character AI check your age?
Through what it calls age assurance, handled by Persona, an identity assurance provider. You're usually prompted when a check is required, and you can also start it in Settings > Advanced > Verify Age on web and mobile. The records don't list which documents are asked for.
Can I opt out of Character AI using my chats for training?
Only if you're in the EEA or UK. There, you can uncheck "Improve the Model for Everyone" under Settings > Data & Privacy in the app, or under Model Improvement in the web account settings. Even then, Character AI says it may still use data for search, recommendations and safety classifiers.
Which app should I use instead for adult content?
For someone leaving Character AI, I'd start with SpicyChat: its policy allows adult content, free text chat is unlimited with ads, and it has group chat. Nomi AI is the calmer choice, with 50 free messages a day and no ads. Try either free before paying.
