Can Janitor AI see your chats? A plain privacy answer

Can Janitor AI see your chats?

My honest answer: assume it can. Your conversations live on an online service run by JanitorAI Inc., a US company, and nothing on file promises that staff can never open them. Nothing official on file tells you if your chats feed AI model training. So the honest status there is "unclear", and saying so beats guessing.

Here is what is and isn't on file about your chats:

  • Who runs it: JanitorAI Inc., at janitorai.com and its official apps
  • Training on chats: no official statement found either way
  • Deleting your account: permanent, and it removes all your data
  • External models: if you connect one, your chat goes through that setup too
  • A published data retention window: none on file

My take: that isn't a scandal, but it isn't reassuring either. Many companion apps publish a clear line on training, and Janitor AI's silence leaves you to fill the gap. So picture the company able to read every chat, and leave out real names, home addresses and anything you'd hate to see leaked.

Think of it like a shared office notebook: fine for stories and banter, not the place for a bank PIN, a medical detail or the full name of an ex.

One easy win for privacy is using the real site. Several look-alike domains exist that are not run by the company, and a chat typed into a copy site is readable by whoever runs that copy. Stick to janitorai.com and the official apps. The help centre at help.janitorai.com and the status page at status.janitorai.com are official too.

If you split your time between Janitor AI and other apps, it's worth cleaning up there too. For that app, my walkthrough on clearing out Character AI chats has the steps.

The table right after this section compares Janitor AI with the companion apps I cover, so you can see which offer what, and where your conversations would end up living.

Who else can see your Janitor AI chats?

It depends on how you chat. On the built-in free model, JLLM, only Janitor AI's own system is described as writing the replies. The picture changes if you connect an outside model. Janitor AI supports proxy setups, with official guides for OpenRouter and DeepSeek, using an API key you supply in the chat settings.

My read is simple: if a third-party model writes the replies, that provider receives your chat to do it.

The parties that can touch your data, going by the official pages:

  • JanitorAI Inc., which runs the site, the apps and your account
  • Any outside model provider you connect through a proxy
  • Third-party models billed through JanitorRouter, an add-on for Janitor+ subscribers
  • Stripe, which handles web payments, so billing details rather than chats
  • k-ID, the age check provider that some countries require, only for users in Australia, Brazil or the UK

I like that the proxy route is optional. If privacy worries you, staying on the built-in model means only one company handles your chats. If you use a proxy, read that provider's own privacy terms, because their rules then apply to your stories too.

That is one extra bit of reading, and I think it's worth doing before your first proxied chat.

Can the AI itself see your whole chat?

No, and this one surprises people. The built-in model works from a limited memory budget. Janitor AI's own guide says JLLM's token "wallet" sits somewhere from 8,000 up to 9,000 tokens, and once a chat passes that, the AI starts "forgetting" the oldest parts.

Other reviewers report the same pattern: free JLLM memory fades quickly, with drift or forgotten details within 20-30 messages. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month promises 5x more context for better memory, which widens what the model can look back on.

So there are two different questions hiding in "can it see my chats". The company can store all of it. The model only reads the recent stretch. For a longer look at memory, models and the free tier, see my complete Janitor AI review. The feature table below compares memory, images and voice across the apps.

Does Janitor AI use your chats to train its AI?

Nobody can tell you for sure from the official pages on file. Janitor AI's status on chat training is "unclear", with no official quote and no page to point at. Its main terms and policy pages could not be read in full for this guide, so there may be wording there that isn't reflected here. I'm not going to fill that gap with a guess.

What I would do in your place is act as if the answer could be yes. It costs you very little. These are the habits I'd suggest:

  • Keep real names, places and workplaces out of your stories
  • Build personas that don't mirror your own life too closely
  • Think twice before pasting in private messages or photos from real people
  • Delete old chats and characters you no longer want kept

That isn't paranoia, just good hygiene for any chat app that doesn't publish a clear training line. If Janitor AI later states its position plainly, I'll be happy to say so.

Here is what bothers me a little. Janitor AI has a big creative community, and people pour a lot of personal feeling into their bots and personas. A community like that deserves a clear sentence on training, the way some rivals publish one. Silence isn't proof of anything bad, but it doesn't help anyone decide.

How do the other apps here compare? Honestly, the records for the apps in this group don't include their training policies either, so I can't rank them on this point. Still, privacy is one of several things worth weighing when you choose.

If Janitor AI's silence is a dealbreaker for you, my list of apps to consider instead of Janitor AI is a good starting point, and you can then read each one's privacy page before you sign up. Privacy pages change, so read the current version rather than an old screenshot.

Right below, the box sums up OurDream AI. It is one of those alternatives, with a very different setup: a companion app that leans on images, video and voice instead of being a roleplay hub.

How do you delete your Janitor AI chats and account?

Deleting the whole account is the strongest privacy step Janitor AI offers on record, and I like how firm it is. The help centre says deletion is permanent: all your data, including posts, characters, personas and profile information, is removed and cannot be recovered.

The path is short. Go to Settings, then Security, then Delete account, and type in the 6-digit code Janitor AI emails you. That code step is a small safeguard I approve of, since it stops a stranger with your open browser from wiping your work in one click.

Before you delete, think about what you'll lose. Characters you built go too, and there is no undo. If you want to keep a character's personality, scenario or greeting, copy those fields somewhere safe first. The help centre doesn't give a retention window, so I can't tell you how long any backup copies might last after deletion.

If you pay for Janitor+, cancel it before you delete. On the web, that runs through Settings, Billing and Manage Subscription, which sends you to Stripe. If you subscribed inside the app, Apple or Google handles the cancelling, and the help article says the website can't do it for you.

Either way, you keep Janitor+ for the rest of the period you paid for, and after that the account is back on the free tier.

Privacy also shows up on your bank statement. No billing descriptor for Janitor AI is on file, so how the charge will read is unknown. Compare OurDream AI in the box above, which bills under DREAM STUDIO LLC AL.

A neutral name like that is kinder if a partner or roommate can see your card or banking app, and I'd like every app to publish its descriptor up front.

My overall read: Janitor AI gives you a clean exit, which counts for a lot. What it doesn't give, on the pages on file, is detail on what happens to your chats while you stay. If you have questions about deleting, cancelling or privacy settings on other apps, my help pages for companion apps collect them one guide at a time.

How to see character definition in Janitor AI, and who sees yours

If it's your own character, the definition is simply what you wrote on the character-creation page. Janitor AI builds bots from personality, scenario and greeting fields, so those are the places to look when you want to check or edit how a character is set up.

For characters made by other people, the records don't say whether their definitions can be viewed, hidden or partly shown. I won't describe a menu I can't confirm. What I'd take from it as a creator is simple: if you publish a character, assume the parts shown to readers are public, and keep anything personal out of every field.

How to see public chats in Janitor AI

Nothing on file describes a public chat feed, so I can't give you steps for how to see public chats in Janitor AI. What is public, going by the official pages, are characters and community features. Every public character is open on the free tier, and Janitor+ adds a golden username, a checkmark and comment react emojis, which tells you there are posts and comments that others can see.

My advice follows from that. Treat anything you post in the community as public, the same as on any social site. Treat your private conversations as private from other users, but not necessarily from the company, for the reasons earlier on this page. If you want a story kept to yourself, keep it in a chat rather than a post.

That distinction matters to me because roleplay hubs mix two worlds: a public shelf of characters and very private chats with them. Knowing where one ends and the other begins is what lets people relax and write. I'd like Janitor AI to spell that line out in one plain help article.

When I weigh an app's privacy, I look at what's published, not at what I hope is true. Clear training rules, a real deletion path and an honest billing name all count, and you can read how that works on the page on the way I weigh each app. Janitor AI scores well on deletion and less well on clarity about training.

Is the Janitor AI app more private than the website?

Not in any way the records describe. The official mobile apps are the same service with one difference: NSFW content starts switched off on mobile, because Apple's and Google's store rules require it. Once you enable it in your web settings, the app works exactly like the website.

So your account, your chats and the privacy rules are shared across both. In other words, switching from browser to phone doesn't give you a quieter, more private version of the service.

The real privacy step on mobile is using the right app. The help centre lists the official apps and calls them the only official ones, and several look-alike websites exist that the company doesn't run. I'd install only the listings whose developer is JanitorAI, INC, rather than trusting a search result. A fake app or site could see everything you type.

Should privacy decide which roleplay app you use?

It should be one of your deciding factors, and for some people the biggest. Janitor AI's policy allows adult content for its users, and its free tier is generous: unlimited JLLM chats and swipes, per its announcement. What it lacks, on file, is a clear training statement and a published billing descriptor.

My friend advice, depending on what you care about most:

  • Privacy first: keep personal details out, use the built-in model, and delete what you don't need
  • Discreet billing first: pick an app that publishes its statement name
  • Content policy first: check each app's rules before you invest in characters

None of these has a single right answer, and I'd rank them in the order that matches your own worries.

Weighing Janitor AI against Character AI? Their content rules sit far apart, and I cover that side in my explainer on Character AI and NSFW.

For me, Janitor AI is a fair choice as long as you go in with open eyes: the company can hold your chats, the model forgets the older parts, and deletion is final. Write with those three facts in mind and you'll be fine. The FAQ below covers the quick questions.

Common questions

Does Janitor AI see your chats?

Assume it can. Your chats are stored on a service run by JanitorAI Inc., and no official statement on file says staff can never access them. Training on chats is marked unclear, with no official quote. Leave anything personal out of your stories.

Can other users read my private Janitor AI chats?

Nothing on file describes private chats being shown to other users. What is public on Janitor AI are characters and community features like posts and comments. I would treat anything you post publicly as public, and keep private details out of chats as a general habit.

How do I delete my Janitor AI account and chats?

Go to Settings, then Security, then Delete account, and confirm with the 6-digit code sent by email. Deletion is permanent and removes all your data, including posts, characters, personas and profile information. Cancel any Janitor+ subscription first, via Stripe for a web plan, or via Apple or Google for an app plan.

Does using a proxy change who sees my chats?

Janitor AI lets you connect outside models, with guides for OpenRouter and DeepSeek, using your own API key. In that setup the outside provider writes the replies, so it receives your chat. Read that provider's privacy terms before you connect it.

Is Janitor+ worth it for privacy?

At $12.99 a month, Janitor+ gives you 5x more context, unlimited priority messages and more swipes with frontier models. Nothing on file says it changes how your data is handled. Pay for it for memory and speed, not for privacy.

Is the Janitor AI website safe to use?

Use the official site, janitorai.com, and the official apps. Several look-alike domains exist that the company does not run, and anything typed into a copy site can be read by whoever runs it. Janitor AI also runs an official status page.
