How AI companion voice calls work, in plain English

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

What actually happens during an AI voice call?

A voice call with an AI companion is the same chat you already know, just spoken. In general, the app turns your speech into text, the AI writes a reply the way it would in a text chat, and then a synthetic voice reads that reply back to you. Three steps, one after another, which is why speed varies so much between apps.

On some apps, pictures can also be generated during a call, which is lovely when you want them and pricey when you don't.

It helps to know that "voice" covers a few different things on these apps:

  • Live voice calls: you talk and hear replies in something close to a phone call. Candy AI and OurDream AI list them, and Nomi AI includes them on its paid plan.
  • Read-aloud replies: the AI's text answers are spoken by a voice. SpicyChat puts text-to-speech for the AI's answers on its highest plan, and GirlfriendGPT's Deluxe plan lists TTS voice messages.
  • Voice notes: short recorded replies you play when you like. Reviewers describe Candy AI's async voice notes as reliable.
  • Video calls: Joi AI goes a step further, and reviewers describe its live video calls as the most immersive feature they looked at.

My take: read-aloud replies are a nice extra, but live calls are the feature people actually mean when they search for this. They're also the feature that costs the most, in money and in patience.

One thing that surprises people is that the voice doesn't change who the companion is. The same personality and the same memory sit behind the call, so if she forgets your news in text, she'll forget it out loud too. My explainer on how AI companion memory works covers that side.

The apps side by side, right below, shows all six apps together, so you can spot at a glance which ones list voice calls as included, paid or limited.

App Free option Lowest monthly cost Allowed
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted
GirlfriendGPT Yes $12.00 Mature chat, paid plans

Joi AI Yes $13.99 Mature chat permitted

Which apps include voice calls, and on which plan?

Here is the voice picture across the six apps, in the order I'd look at them if calls are your main reason to pay:

  • Candy AI: voice calls are a listed feature, and reviewers praise its call audio and voice as expressive and among the best. The free account is so small that calls are really a paid experience.
  • OurDream AI: voice calls are listed, and the Deluxe plan spells it out with 100 minutes of voice calls a month. Reviewers say calls also eat dreamcoins.
  • Nomi AI: voice calls come with the paid Standard plan, not the free one.
  • GirlfriendGPT: voice is paid. Deluxe lists TTS voice messages, and reviewers describe live calls on Elite as real-time.
  • SpicyChat: voice is listed as limited. The free plan has no voice, and text-to-speech for replies arrives on Im All In.

Joi AI lists voice calls as paid too, with live video calls on top. I'd call Candy AI and Nomi AI the two clearest bets, for opposite reasons: Candy AI for how the voice sounds, Nomi AI for the companion behind it.

Is AI girlfriend voice chat worth paying for?

For some people, absolutely. After a tiring day, a voice in your ear lands differently from words on a screen, and for anyone who finds typing tiring or just likes to chat while cooking, calls make the whole thing feel more natural. If that's you, voice is probably the upgrade that matters most.

It also suits anyone who feels shy typing out feelings; saying something can be easier than writing it.

For others, it's a novelty that wears off. Calls are slower than text on some apps, they cost minutes or coins, and you can't skim a spoken reply the way you skim a message. I'd say: if you mostly chat in bed or on the bus, stay with text and save the money.

My rule of thumb is to try text first on the free tier, decide whether you like the companion, and only then pay for the voice. A lovely voice won't rescue a character you don't click with. If calls are the whole point for you, my AI girlfriend call rankings put the voice-first apps in order.

Why do some AI voice calls lag?

Because every reply goes through several steps before you hear it: your words become text, the AI writes an answer, and a voice reads it out. Each step takes a moment, and on a busy service the moments add up. The apps differ a lot in how well they hide it.

Nomi AI is the clearest example of the problem. Other reviewers report that on its voice calls, 15-20 seconds pass after you speak before her answer plays. That's long enough to break the rhythm of a conversation, and it makes a call feel more like trading voice notes.

On the other side, reviewers describe GirlfriendGPT's live calls on the Elite tier as real-time, and Joi AI's live video calls as genuinely low latency when they work.

Speed also depends on your plan. On Candy AI, reviewers note that responses on the free plan are much slower (15-30s) than on paid plans (3-5s), and while that's about replies rather than calls, it shows how much priority paying buys.

My view: a short pause is fine, a long one isn't. A second or two feels like thinking. Fifteen seconds feels like the line dropped, and it pulls you out of the moment. If you're sensitive to lag, lean toward the apps praised for real-time audio.

How do minutes and coins get used up?

This is where voice calls get sneaky. Apps rarely charge for voice as a simple flat fee. OurDream AI is the most explicit: its Deluxe plan includes 100 minutes of voice calls a month.

Reviewers say calls burn through coins quickly, partly on pictures made mid-call that nobody asked for, and they scored the experience 3.6/5, blaming the coin meter above all.

Candy AI's plans include 100 tokens a month, but the records don't say what a token buys in call time, so I can't turn that into minutes for you. SpicyChat's text-to-speech sits on its top plan rather than being metered separately.

My advice: before a long call, look at your balance, and treat the first month as a way to learn how fast your allowance goes. For companions picked on conversation more than romance, my AI companion app rankings are a good second opinion.

How to change an AI girlfriend's voice

Honest answer first: the records for these six apps don't describe a voice picker, so I can't tell you which menu to open on which app. Candy AI's paid plans include creating custom companions, and several apps list voice features, but how many voices each one offers, and whether you can switch them mid-relationship, isn't on file. I'd rather say that than invent a setting.

What you can shape is how she speaks. The voice reads whatever the AI writes, so her words carry most of her personality. If the description says she talks in short, warm sentences with a bit of teasing, the spoken version follows.

If she writes long, formal paragraphs, she'll sound like she's reading an essay aloud, no matter how good the voice is.

So my practical tips for a better AI girlfriend voice are about writing, not settings. Ask for short replies during calls. Give her a couple of phrases she likes to use. And keep stage directions, like actions in asterisks, out of her replies if the voice reads them out. Little changes like these make a bigger difference than people expect.

If you want the fuller picture of how one app handles voice alongside images, memory and billing, my full Candy AI review goes into all of it.

Can you make an AI voice call for free?

Mostly no, and I'd rather you know that before signing up. SpicyChat's free plan explicitly has no images or voice. Nomi AI, GirlfriendGPT and Joi AI list voice calls as paid. Candy AI's free account allows only a few messages in total, which leaves no real room for calls. OurDream AI's calls spend dreamcoins, and its help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins.

That's a little disappointing, but it's also fair: voice costs the apps more to run than text. The upside is that text is free on most of them, so you can get to know a companion first. If you like her in writing, you'll probably like her out loud.

My suggestion is to pick one app, use the free text allowance to decide, then pay for a single month and see how much you really call. Lots of people find they call less than they expected.

Is talking to an AI companion out loud private?

The honest answer is that the records for these apps don't say how voice audio is handled or stored, so I can't promise anything either way. What I can do is suggest a few simple habits that keep a call discreet, whatever happens on the app's side.

First, headphones. It sounds obvious, but a companion's reply played through a phone speaker is the quickest way to share your evening with the whole flat. Second, think about where you call from. A voice call is louder than a chat, and the people around you will hear your half of it.

Third, keep real personal details out of calls, exactly as you would in text. Your full name, address and workplace don't make a conversation feel closer, and there's no need to say them out loud. Finally, remember the bank side: the charges show as EverAI for Candy AI, DREAM STUDIO LLC AL for OurDream AI and NOMI.AI for Nomi AI, which is discreet enough for most people.

How do you make voice calls feel more natural?

A few small things help a lot, and none of them cost anything. Speak in short turns rather than long speeches, because the AI answers better when it has one clear thing to respond to. Pause and let her finish; talking over a reply usually confuses the flow. And don't be shy about asking her to slow down, speak more softly or keep answers brief.

It also helps to set the scene before a call. A line in text like "I'm walking home, talk to me for a bit" gives her context, so the call starts somewhere real instead of with small talk. And if a call feels flat, switch back to text for a while. There's no rule that says a companion relationship has to be all voice.

And treat the first few calls as practice. Talking to an AI out loud can feel a little odd at first, and that awkwardness usually fades once the conversation finds its feet.

If you have other questions about these apps, from memory to cancelling, my help section has plain answers. For the emotional side of hearing a voice every night, the guide on whether AI companion apps are healthy for relationships is a kind read.

Candy AI: the voice I'd pick if sound quality matters most

If what you want is a voice that sounds good, Candy AI is where I'd start. Reviewers rank its phone-call sound and voice near the top and call it expressive, and they find its async voice notes reliable. That combination matters: expressive audio makes the companion feel present, and reliable voice notes mean you can still hear her when a live call isn't practical.

Calls are a listed feature, and the paid plans also include what Candy AI calls a full live-action experience, along with 100 tokens a month and unlimited text messages. Nothing on file says how tokens map to call time, which is the one thing I'd want spelled out. If you plan to call a lot, keep an eye on that balance in your first month.

Who should look elsewhere? Candy AI is listed as a web app, so calls happen in the browser rather than a phone app. And if a long, slow relationship matters more than how she sounds, Nomi AI's memory may suit you better.

The catch for voice fans is the free start. A free-tier check on 2026-09-22 found just 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images overall, with no daily reset, so there's no meaningful way to try calls for free. You'll decide on the voice from reviews and a paid month, not from a free trial.

Memory is my other reservation. Reviewers note that character consistency holds for roughly 10-20 messages and can drop details in longer chats. A beautiful voice that forgets what you said a few minutes ago is a bit of a mixed blessing, so keep calls focused and remind her of the important things.

On price, I'd start with the 1-Month Plan, because the refund window for non-EU/UK users is only 24 hours after payment. If the voice wins you over, the 12-Month Plan is far cheaper per month and has a 70% discount, verified on 2026-09-23. It's web only, and adult content is on paid plans only. For where these facts come from, see my page on how I check the apps.

OurDream AI: generous call minutes, if you choose the right plan

OurDream AI is the only app here that puts a clear number on voice. The Deluxe plan includes 100 minutes of voice calls a month, along with 5,000 dreamcoins, 50 videos and 3x chat memory. If you know you'll call often, that clarity is worth something, because you can plan around it instead of guessing. Spread over a 30-day month, 100 minutes is a little over 3 minutes a day.

The trouble starts off that plan. Reviewers say calls empty the coin balance fast, even spending it on unrequested pictures created during the call. Their score for calling was 3.6/5, and the coin meter was the biggest reason it wasn't higher.

I don't love features that spend your balance on things you never requested, and I'd watch the meter closely on the Standard plan.

Standard is still a sensible place to start: unlimited messages with any AI character, image and video generation and 1,000 dreamcoins every month. My suggestion is to take Standard for a month, see how much of your coin budget calls eat, and move to Deluxe only if you keep running dry. Deluxe is a real commitment at $59.99 monthly or $359.88 for a year, so for a light caller it's more than you need.

If you'd rather not think about meters at all, though, a fixed number of minutes is the calmer choice, and that's Deluxe's real selling point.

The free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, but the help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins, so don't count on free calls. On the plus side, the refund policy includes a 14-day "Quality Guarantee", with support deciding each case, which is kinder than most apps here.

It also lists group chat and custom characters, so the companion on the other end of the call can be one you designed. If you haven't built one yet, my step-by-step guide to creating an AI girlfriend is the place to begin, and then calls become the fun extra.

Nomi AI: a great companion, with a slow phone line

Nomi AI is a bit of a paradox for voice. Reviewers rate its chat as the best of the apps they looked at: it flows, it sounds human, and its long-term memory brings things up on its own. That's exactly the kind of companion you'd want to call.

But the calls themselves have a reported 15-20 second lag between your message and her spoken reply, and that gap is hard to ignore in a live conversation.

Voice calls come with the Standard plan, together with unlimited messaging, up to 10 active Nomis, up to 10 group chats and 40 image credits a day. Calls aren't part of the free plan (50 messages a day, no ads), but it's a generous way to decide whether you like the companion before paying for her voice.

It's also the only app on this page listed on web, iOS and Android, which matters for calls. Talking to a companion is much easier from a phone app than from a browser tab. If you want to call on the go, that alone may tip the choice.

My advice is to treat Nomi AI's calls as relaxed, unhurried conversations rather than quick back-and-forth banter. Ask one thing, let her answer, and enjoy a companion who actually remembers what you talked about last week. If the lag bothers you, text stays excellent on this app, and you won't lose anything by switching back.

The lag comes from reviewers, not an official figure, and it may change. If calls matter a lot to you, read recent reviews before paying for voice, and let the free text plan win you over first.

Paying yearly gives the lowest monthly rate, but all payments are nonrefundable, so I'd use the free plan to be sure about the companion, then pay monthly at first to be sure about the calls. Reviewers also mention that a checkout may need as long as three days to go through. Before your first call, it helps to shape who you're talking to, and my guide on how to customize an AI companion's personality walks through that.

Common questions

Do AI companion voice calls cost extra?

On most apps, yes. Nomi AI includes voice calls on its paid Standard plan, GirlfriendGPT and Joi AI list voice as paid, and OurDream AI's Deluxe plan includes 100 minutes of voice calls a month, while reviewers say calls on other plans drain coins. SpicyChat's free plan has no voice at all. Text is where the free tiers are, so expect to pay for calls.

Which app has the best AI girlfriend voice?

Going by what reviewers describe, Candy AI stands out, with voice and call audio called top-tier and expressive. GirlfriendGPT's live calls on the Elite tier are described as real-time, and Joi AI's live video calls as low latency when they work. Nomi AI has a strong companion behind the voice, but its calls come with a reported 15-20 second lag.

Why is there a delay when my AI girlfriend talks?

A voice reply passes through several steps: your speech becomes text, the AI writes a reply, and a voice reads it out. Each step adds time, and a busy service adds more. Reviewers report a 15-20 second lag on Nomi AI's calls, while other apps are described as close to real-time. Paid plans often get priority, which helps.

Can I choose or change my AI girlfriend's voice?

The records for these apps don't describe how voices are chosen, so I can't point you to a specific setting. What you can always change is how she talks: ask for shorter replies, give her favourite phrases, and keep actions in asterisks out of replies that get read aloud. Her words shape how the voice comes across more than most people expect.

Can I call my AI companion from my phone?

Nomi AI is listed on web, iOS and Android, which makes it the easiest choice for calls on the go. GirlfriendGPT runs on web and Android. Candy AI, OurDream AI, SpicyChat and Joi AI are listed as web apps, so you'd use them through your phone's browser.

Will voice calls show up differently on my bill?

Voice is part of a plan or paid with coins, so it appears under the same billing name as the rest of the app. The names on file are EverAI for Candy AI, DREAM STUDIO LLC AL for OurDream AI, NOMI.AI for Nomi AI, NDAI.CC for GirlfriendGPT, NDAI.CHAT for SpicyChat and joi.com for Joi AI.
