What is Character AI Plus, and who should pay for it?
What does Character AI Plus do?
Character AI Plus is the name most people search for, but the plan itself is called c.ai+. It's the top paid tier of Character AI, the character chat app from Character Technologies, Inc., and it sits above the free plan and a cheaper middle tier called (c.ai) lite. In one sentence: c.ai+ takes the free app you already know and removes the friction.
That friction is real on the free plan. You get unlimited messaging, which is generous, but with full ads, slow mode at high load and limited daily features. Here is what c.ai+ lists in exchange for $9.99 a month:
- No ads anywhere in the app
- No slow mode, so replies keep their speed at busy hours
- Unlimited premium chat styles, plus the highest daily limits of any plan
- The best memory on offer, with 30 memory pins
- Premium support
What I like about that list is how honest it is. It sells comfort, not a different product. What I'd flag is that the content policy stays the same on every plan, so c.ai+ is an upgrade to the experience, not to what's allowed.
Who is it for? In my view, the person who already spends most evenings in Character AI and has started to notice the waiting. If that's you, c.ai+ is the plan built around your exact complaint. If you're new to the app, start free.
A quick housekeeping note before you upgrade: paying doesn't change what's already in your account. If you'd like a fresh start with your new plan, my guide on how to clear old Character AI chats shows the way.
The apps side by side, right after this section, set Character AI's plans next to other companion apps. It's the quickest way to see whether $9.99 is cheap or dear for what you want from a chat app.
| App | Free option | Lowest monthly cost | Allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character AI | Yes | $4.99 | Unconfirmed |
| Candy AI | Yes | €3.99 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| OurDream AI | Yes | $9.99 | Mature chat permitted |
| Nomi AI | Yes | $8.33 | Mature chat permitted |
| GirlfriendGPT | Yes | $12.00 | Mature chat, paid plans |
| SpicyChat | Yes | $5.00 | Mature chat permitted |
How much is Character AI Plus?
There are two ways to buy it, plus a cheaper sibling worth knowing about. Here are the paid options on the official pricing page:
- c.ai+ monthly: $9.99 a month
- c.ai+ Annual: $94.99 a year (roughly $7.92 per month)
- (c.ai) lite: from $4.99 a month, with fewer ads rather than none
The pricing page shows the annual plan as "$119.88 $94.99 per year" with "save 21%". The $119.88 is simply twelve monthly payments added up. Pay yearly and you keep $24.89 compared with paying monthly for the same twelve months.
That saving is real, but I wouldn't chase it on day one. The annual plan is paid up front, and Character AI doesn't give money back unless the law makes it. If you get bored in month three, the other nine months are gone. My rule: pay monthly until you're sure, then switch to the year.
No discount code or free trial for c.ai+ is on file, so the annual plan is the only price cut the records show. Be wary of any site promising a cheaper route.
Is Character AI Plus worth it?
For the right person, yes. It comes down to how many evenings a week you spend chatting, so let me be specific.
If you chat most evenings, the free plan's ads and slow mode start to feel like a tax on your favourite hobby. At $9.99, c.ai+ removes both, and I think that's a fair price for daily use. Compared with the companion apps elsewhere on this page, it's also one of the cheaper top-tier plans around.
If you chat once or twice a week, I'd stay free. Unlimited messaging with ads is a very decent deal, and slow mode matters less when you're not in a hurry.
If ads are your only complaint, look at (c.ai) lite first. At $4.99 it cuts the ads and adds 30 memory pins and chat customization. It doesn't list the removal of slow mode, though, so evening chatters will still feel the queue.

What can you do with Character AI Plus that you can't do for free?
Less than some people expect, and that's fine once you know it. c.ai+ doesn't unlock new kinds of chats. It makes the same chats smoother and gives characters a better grip on the facts you care about. Here is the difference, plan by plan, as the records list it:
- Free: unlimited messaging, full ads, slow mode at high load, limited daily features
- (c.ai) lite, $4.99: fewer ads, some premium chat-style messages each day, 30 memory pins, chat customization
- c.ai+, $9.99: no ads, no slow mode, unlimited premium chat styles, highest daily limits, 30 memory pins, premium support
Read side by side, the jump from free to lite is mostly about ads and memory, and the jump from lite to c.ai+ is mostly about speed and limits. Both paid tiers share the same 30 memory pins, which surprised me a little. So if better memory is what you're after, lite is enough on its own.
A practical way to choose between the two paid tiers: notice what annoys you over a week of free use. If it's the ads, lite covers it. If it's waiting at busy hours or running into a daily limit on premium chat styles, only c.ai+ answers that.
And if nothing annoys you, you've just saved $9.99 a month, which is my favourite outcome of all.
What c.ai+ can't do is just as important. It doesn't change the content policy, which allows no adult content on any plan. It doesn't add a public API, since Character AI doesn't offer one. And the records don't show any extra characters or features that are locked to subscribers beyond the list above.
That's why I'd call c.ai+ an upgrade for fans, not a fix for people who want something the app doesn't do. If you want more freedom, images and video on tap, or adult content, paying Character AI more won't get you there. Another app will, usually at a higher price.
If that sounds like you, my ranked Character AI alternatives show which apps cover what c.ai+ leaves out, with their free starts. The box right below sums up one of them, OurDream AI.

How does c.ai+ compare with paying for other companion apps?
OurDream AI, summed up in the box above, is a useful yardstick, because it's the opposite approach. The Standard Monthly plan, at $19.99, bundles unlimited messages, image and video generation and 1,000 dreamcoins every month. Deluxe Monthly reaches $59.99. That's two to six times the price of c.ai+, for a different, media-heavy product.
Nomi AI sits in between. Its Standard Plan is $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year, with unlimited messaging, voice calls and 40 image credits a day. It keeps a permanent free plan too, with 50 messages a day and no ads.
SpicyChat has the most tiers. Get a Taste, $5.95 a month, drops the ads and adds a memory manager; True Supporter is $19.95, and Im All In is $29.95. Its free plan, like Character AI's, has no published message cap.
Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT make the same point from another angle. Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, and GirlfriendGPT's Premium is $15.00 a month, with Deluxe at $35.00 and Elite at $50.00. Both keep adult content for paying members, which is a big part of what they charge for.
Set against those, c.ai+ looks modest. $9.99 buys you speed, no ads and memory pins, with no coins or tokens on top. You always know what the month costs, and nothing in the plan meters your messages. Coin-based plans can be good value, but they make the monthly cost harder to predict.
The trade-off is scope. c.ai+ is cheap partly because it sells less: no adult content, and fewer paid extras than the media-heavy apps. If Character AI's style of chat is what you love, that's no loss at all. If you keep wishing it did more, a pricier app may serve you better than any upgrade here.
One thing all of these plans share is automatic renewal. Whichever you choose, learn the cancel steps before the first charge, not after the second. I think that habit saves more money than any discount.
If you'd like cancel steps and billing names for each of these apps, they're gathered in my companion app help library.

How to cancel Character AI Plus
It's straightforward on the web. The help-centre article "How do I manage or cancel my c.ai+ subscription?" gives the route: go to Settings, then Account, then Manage. That takes you to the Customer Portal, where you enter your account email to continue.
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play instead, refunds for that purchase go through Apple or Google rather than Character AI.
Two things to know before you cancel. First, Character AI's terms say your card gets charged by itself at every agreed-upon renewal until you cancel. So do it with a few days to spare, not on the morning the charge is due. Second, cancelling doesn't return money already paid, which brings us to refunds.
Can you get a refund on c.ai+?
Usually not. The terms rule refunds out, with one exception: cases where a law says otherwise. I'd call that strict but clear. It isn't the meanest rule among companion apps, and at least there's no fine print pretending otherwise. It does mean the annual plan deserves a bit of thought before you click.
Where you bought matters too. Apple and Google handle refunds for purchases made in their stores, each under its own rules. Web purchases go through Stripe, per the help centre. If you're in a country with strong consumer law, "except where required by law" may work in your favour, but I wouldn't count on it.
There's one more billing snag worth mentioning. One reviewer describes a credit card and a debit card both failing again and again when paying for c.ai+, across three weeks, even though those cards went through fine on ten other sites. Support's only idea was to try another card. It's one report, not a pattern. Still, if checkout fails for you, paying through an app store is the obvious plan B.
My advice if you want a safety net: whatever plan you're on, set a calendar nudge for a few days ahead of each renewal. It's the cheapest insurance there is against paying for a month, or a year, you didn't want.
Refund rules, cancel paths and billing names all feed into how apps are scored here. How I check the apps explains how much each of those counts.
What are the benefits of Character AI Plus for memory?
Memory is the benefit people ask about most, so it deserves its own section. c.ai+ lists "best memory" with 30 memory pins, meaning you can pin the facts you want a character to hold on to: a name, a backstory detail, a promise.
How well does that work? Other reviewers report a mixed picture. On the plus side, they describe strong unaided recall of buried facts. On the minus side, the AI can also make up believable details it states just as firmly, such as a hotel or a cake that never came up.
They also report long chats getting messy, with a promise forgotten ten messages later despite an Auto Memories feature.
My view: pins are a real help, but not a guarantee. I'd save them for the few details you'd hate to lose, and accept that long stories will drift now and then. That's true of most companion apps, not just this one.
What doesn't Character AI Plus change?
The rules. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content, and c.ai+ doesn't touch it. The plan description lists speed, ads, memory, limits and support. Nothing about content levels.
So if you were hoping a subscription would loosen things, please don't pay for that reason. For the full story, my guide to whether Character AI will allow NSFW explains the policy and the apps that allow adult content instead.
It also doesn't change the platforms. Character AI runs on web, iOS and Android whether you pay or not, so c.ai+ isn't about unlocking a device.
And it doesn't change who you're dealing with. Your subscription is with Character Technologies, Inc., under the same terms as everyone else, including the no-refund rule and automatic renewal.
So here is my bottom line on c.ai+. It's a fair, predictable plan for people who already love Character AI and use it daily. It's unnecessary for casual users, who get unlimited messaging free. And it's the wrong purchase for anyone who wants the app to be something it isn't.
Start free, give it a couple of weeks, and upgrade only if the ads and slow mode genuinely get in your way.
Common questions
Is Character AI Plus the same as c.ai+?
Yes. Character AI Plus is how many people search for it, but the official name of the plan is c.ai+. It is Character AI's top paid tier, above the free plan and (c.ai) lite, and it costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year.
What does Character AI Plus do?
It removes ads and slow mode, gives unlimited premium chat styles and the highest daily limits, adds the best memory with 30 memory pins, and includes premium support. It does not change the content policy, which allows no adult content on any plan.
How much is Character AI Plus per year?
c.ai+ Annual is $94.99 for twelve months, or about $7.92 per month. The pricing page shows it against $119.88 for twelve monthly payments and labels it "save 21%". You pay for the whole year up front, and refunds happen only where a law demands them.
What is the difference between (c.ai) lite and c.ai+?
(c.ai) lite starts at $4.99 a month and gives fewer ads, a set number of premium chat-style messages per day, 30 memory pins and chat customization. c.ai+ at $9.99 removes ads entirely, removes slow mode, and adds unlimited premium chat styles, the highest daily limits and premium support.
Is Character AI Plus worth it for casual users?
Probably not. The free plan already gives unlimited messaging, with ads and slow mode at high load. If you only chat now and then, those are small costs. c.ai+ makes most sense for people who open the app most days and are tired of ads and busy-hour delays.
Can I cancel c.ai+ anytime?
Yes. On the web, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage to reach the Customer Portal and enter your account email. The plan renews automatically until you cancel. App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google under their own rules.
