Is Character AI generative AI? What it creates, and the limits

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Is Character AI generative AI, in plain words?

Yes. Character AI doesn't pull replies from a script: the lines your characters say are produced by AI models as you chat. The free plan even names the models it runs on, PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr.

So when someone asks me whether it counts as generative AI, my answer is a clear yes, and it goes further than text.

This is what it generates, going by the official pages:

  • Chat replies, unlimited on the free plan
  • Voices, since creators can give a character its own voice, plus live voice calls
  • Images through a separate tool called Imagine Chat
  • Short video through AvatarFX, a photo-to-video avatar feature for c.ai+ members

What I like about that mix is how much of it is open to free users. You can write stories with a character, hear it speak and make your own character without paying. For a generative app, free users get a lot to play with, and it is why so many people meet generative AI here first.

Video is the exception, and even there the paywall is one plan rather than a pile of add-ons. The app runs on web, iOS and Android, so you can try it wherever you already are.

There is a flip side I'd want a friend to know. Character AI says it holds on to some of what people share and uses it to train and improve its AI models. So what you type can feed into the next version of the system, and I'd keep real names and private details out of your chats.

If you'd like to remove old conversations, my guide to deleting chats you no longer want on Character AI walks through it.

Right after this section, the table sets Character AI beside other companion apps, so you can see which of them generate images, video and voice, and what each charges.

Does Character AI use generative AI for more than text?

It does, though each part sits in a different place. Text is the core and it's free. Voice sits inside the character tools: the App Store description promises you can design characters with personalities, backstories "and even Voices", and it lists live voice calls as well as texting. Images and video are separate features with their own rules. I'd rather know that before hunting for a button that isn't there.

A quick map of where each kind of generation lives:

  • Text replies: inside every chat, on every plan
  • Voices and calls: part of the character tools and the app
  • Images: the Imagine Chat tool, which free users can pay for with Charms
  • Video: AvatarFX, already available to c.ai+ members, while others get early access

That split matters more than it sounds. One hands-on reviewer asked a character for a picture in ordinary roleplay and got zero images, only a written description. My take: that is what you'd expect if image making is its own entry point rather than something a chat triggers. So if pictures are your main reason to be here, go to Imagine Chat directly.

Is it generative AI or just characters people wrote?

Both, and the difference is the fun part. People write the character: a personality, a backstory, sometimes a voice. The AI then writes every reply live, inside that frame. The creator sets the stage, and the model improvises the lines.

You can see the improvising in what other reviewers report. They describe strong recall of facts buried deep in a chat, but also plausible extra details stated with the same confidence, like a hotel or a cake that nobody had mentioned. That is generative AI in a nutshell for me: it fills gaps instead of saying "I don't know".

In a storytelling app, I don't hold that against it. Invented details keep a scene moving. But it's a good reason never to treat a character's claims as facts about the real world. My full Character AI review covers how that plays out for memory, voices and chat quality. The feature table right below compares memory, voice and images across apps.

Does Character AI train its AI models on your chats?

Yes, by its own account, and this is the part of the generative AI question I'd care about most. On its model-training page, Character AI says it keeps some of the data you share so it can train and improve its AI models. So your conversations are not only the output of the system. They can also be part of what shapes it later.

There is an opt-out, but it is limited. Here is what the page on file says:

  • Training on shared data is the default
  • An opt-out exists only for people in the EEA and UK
  • On the app, the switch sits under Settings > Data & Privacy
  • On the web, open Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Model Improvement and untick "Improve the Model for Everyone"
  • Opting out doesn't cover everything: your data can still be used for search, for recommendations and for safety classifiers

My honest reaction: I'm glad the policy is written down plainly, but I don't love that the opt-out is only for some regions. If you live outside the EEA and UK, the page on file offers no opt-out, so the safest habit is to leave anything you'd regret seeing in a training set out of your chats. Fiction is fine; your address is not.

Deleting your account is the bigger lever. The help centre says account deletion "is permanent and cannot be reversed", and it lists the path on web and mobile. It doesn't state how long it takes for the data to be gone, though, so I wouldn't assume it happens instantly.

How do other apps compare? I don't have training policies for the rival apps in this group on file here, so I can't rank them on this point, and I won't guess. If this matters to you, read each app's privacy page before you pour your life story into a character.

My list of apps people pick instead of Character AI is a good place to find candidates, with free tiers and prices side by side.

Just below, the box sums up OurDream AI, a generative app with a very different business model: it sells images, video and chat through a coin system.

What does generative AI cost on Character AI compared with coin apps?

Generating things isn't free for any company, and the way an app passes that on tells you a lot. Character AI keeps text free and unlimited, then charges for comfort and extras. OurDream AI, in the box above, meters it: without a subscription, each message costs 1 Dreamcoin, and its Standard Monthly plan at $19.99 includes 1,000 dreamcoins a month for extras like images and video.

Character AI has its own currency too, called Charms. The official Charms FAQ lists Imagine Chat images as something free users can spend Charms on, and Charms also buy things like temporary ad-free passes. The App Store shows six pack sizes, from $0.99 up to $99.99.

What it doesn't show is how many Charms each pack holds, so you can't work out a price per image from what's published.

That missing number is my main gripe here. A pack without a count is hard to judge, and I'd rather see "X Charms for $Y" on the listing. Until then, if you want to try image making, buy the smallest pack first and see how far it goes before you spend more.

The subscriptions are clearer. The entry plan, (c.ai) lite, costs $4.99 a month and gives a daily allowance of premium chat styles and fewer ads. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month (or $94.99 for a year), and for that you get unlimited premium chat styles with ads and slow mode both gone. It is also the plan that opens AvatarFX video, which is listed as out now for c.ai+ members.

So which is the better deal for generative extras? For text, Character AI wins easily, since you pay nothing. For images and video, it depends on how much you make: a coin app like OurDream AI gives a known monthly allowance, while Charms leave the count unclear.

I lean toward Character AI for anyone who mostly chats, and toward a coin plan only for heavy image users who like to see the balance.

If you have a question about a specific plan, currency or refund, my help section for companion apps collects the answers app by app.

Where does Character AI's generative AI get things wrong?

Generative models make mistakes, and Character AI is no exception. Knowing the usual ones helps you enjoy it without being caught out. From what published reviews describe, the weak spots cluster in three places.

Long conversations come first. A promise made ten messages earlier was forgotten in one account, even with an Auto Memories feature in place. The paid plans offer 30 memory pins, which is the tool I'd use for the handful of facts you really want kept.

Voice is second. Some character voices are described as surprisingly good and others as flat, with delays and an emotional tone that can be off. Treat voice as a bonus, not the main reason to be here.

Images are third, for the reason covered above: asking inside a normal chat may give you a description instead of a picture.

Can you trust what Character AI's AI tells you?

For stories, yes. For facts about the real world, I wouldn't. A system that fills gaps with confident details is a lovely co-writer and a poor source. If a character tells you something about health, money or the law, check it with a real source or a real professional before you act on it.

That isn't a knock on Character AI in particular. It's how generative chat works, and every app in this space shares it to some degree. I actually like that Character AI frames itself as "interactive entertainment" on its own site. That is the right mental box for it.

When I score apps like this, I care far more about honest rules than about how clever the replies sound. Clear pricing, a real free tier and a plain training policy all count, and you can read how those are weighed on my page about how the apps are checked.

My bottom line on reliability: enjoy the improvising, pin what matters, and keep a healthy distance between what a character says and what is true. That's how I'd use any generative chat app, and Character AI's generous free plan makes it a low-risk place to learn the habit.

Can Character AI's generative AI write anything you ask for?

No. A generative model could produce almost any kind of text, so the rules around it decide what you actually get. Character AI's policy allows no adult content on any plan, and paying for c.ai+ doesn't change that. The limits apply to every character, including ones you build.

My view is that this is a fair choice for an app with such a broad free audience, even if it frustrates some adults. What I'd never do is try to trick the model past its rules: that breaks the terms, and it risks your account along with every character on it. If the policy doesn't fit you, switching apps is the honest fix.

I explain the policy, and the apps that do allow adult content, in my breakdown of whether Character AI will allow NSFW.

Is Character AI's generative AI worth paying for?

The text generation is already free, and that's the part most people use. So the real question is whether the extras are worth it to you.

Here is how I'd decide:

  • Mostly chatting a few times a week: stay free, the ads are the price
  • Chatting daily and tired of slow mode: $9.99 a month for c.ai+ is fair
  • Curious about AvatarFX video: that is a c.ai+ feature, so you'd need the plan
  • Wanting images now and then: try a small Charms pack before any subscription

If you commit, go monthly before annual. The yearly plan is $94.99, which the pricing page shows against $119.88 as 21% off. Keep in mind that Character AI doesn't refund payments unless the law requires it.

On the web, the Customer Portal link arrives by email when you manage the plan, and app store plans are cancelled through Apple or Google.

One more practical point: checkout accepts card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. A published review describes cards being declined repeatedly at c.ai+ checkout while working elsewhere. If that happens, the app store route is worth a try.

For me, Character AI is the easiest place to see what generative AI can do in conversation, and you don't have to pay to find out. The FAQ below answers the shorter questions.

Common questions

Is Character AI generative AI?

Yes. The replies in a Character AI chat are written by AI models as you talk, not picked from a script; the free plan names PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr. It also generates voices for characters and calls, images through Imagine Chat, and video through AvatarFX for c.ai+ members.

What AI model does Character AI use?

The free plan lists unlimited messaging on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr. The paid plans add premium chat styles: a daily allowance on (c.ai) lite and unlimited on c.ai+. Nothing on file describes how those models were built, so I won't guess beyond the names.

Does Character AI use my chats to train its AI?

Its model-training page says it retains certain data you share to help train and improve its AI models. Users in the EEA and UK can opt out in the data settings, though data may still be used for search, recommendations and safety classifiers afterwards.

Can Character AI make images and videos?

Images come from a separate Imagine Chat tool, and free users can spend Charms on them. Video comes from AvatarFX, which is out for c.ai+ members, with early access offered to others. Asking for a picture inside an ordinary chat may only return a written description.

Is the generative AI on Character AI free?

Text chat is free and unlimited, with ads and slow mode when the service is busy. (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month and c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Charms packs range from $0.99 to $99.99, but the listing does not say how many Charms each holds.

Why does Character AI make things up?

Generative models fill gaps with plausible details. Reviewers describe strong recall of buried facts alongside confident invented ones. It suits storytelling, but I would not rely on a character for real-world facts or advice.
