What is DreamGen AI, and who is it for?

DreamGen is a browser app for AI roleplay and story writing, where you build scenarios with several characters and steer how the AI writes. It comes from Rozum AG in Switzerland, runs on the web in English, and also makes images on credits. I spent ten weeks with it in spring 2024 on the Starter plan, and it's the one app in this genre I would defend in an actual argument.

The short version of what's on offer:

  • A free tier with access to all current AI models and a 4,000-token context
  • Three paid plans: $7.83, $19.35 and $48.30 a month
  • A scenario editor and a Scenario Wizard for building worlds and casts
  • Adult content allowed under its policy
  • Your stories are used for training only if you opt in

My take: DreamGen is a writing tool first and a companion second. If you want a story partner you can direct line by line, it's excellent. If you want someone who meets you halfway on a bad evening, it's cooler than the marketing suggests.

As someone who likes to set up her own characters rather than pick from someone else's idea of a match, I appreciate that the cast here is yours to write. For a more chat-first app, weigh it against the one in my CrushOn AI review before you pick.

Signing up to DreamGen for free

DreamGen's pricing FAQ lists what free includes: access to all current AI models, limited monthly and daily credit usage, and a basic context window of 4,000 tokens. The homepage calls it a "generous free tier, no strings attached." What it never gives is the credit number, so you can't work out in advance how far free goes.

My own ten weeks were on Starter, so I can only judge the free tier on paper. On paper, I like it: every current model is included, which is rarer than it should be. One outside review found the free allowance gone within a single afternoon. I'd believe it, because the free context is the smallest of any plan.

Credit packs are for subscribers only, so there is no top-up for a free account. When you run dry, the choice is to wait or subscribe.

My advice: use the free tier to build one scenario and see if the style suits you. Save the long story for a paid plan with a bigger context.

A per-message coin model works very differently, and my OurDream AI write-up shows that approach. The DreamGen at a glance box below covers the rest of the basics.

How I check the apps

Writing with DreamGen: prose controls and memory

I write fanfic quietly on weekends, and that's the lens I brought. In April 2024 I leaned on the steerable prose controls, and they work like editing a manuscript: pin the tone, cap the verbosity, and the draft obeys. That is not something I can say for most manuscripts I have suffered.

That control is the whole appeal. Most companion apps give you a personality and hope for the best. DreamGen gives you levers, and the output follows them.

Memory here is a question of context window, and the pricing page spells it out: free 4,000 tokens, Starter 5,000, Advanced 15,000 and Pro 30,000. The FAQ puts it plainly: the bigger the context window, the more of your story the AI keeps in mind. I respect that honesty. You can see exactly what you are buying.

Other reviewers report strong long-context coherence, with one catch: roughly 50 turns in, the AI lost the name of a side character. For a long ensemble story, that is the kind of slip I'd expect on a smaller context, and a reason to size your plan to your story.

Scenario structure and the Scenario Wizard get the most praise from outside, along with a learning curve for new users. The homepage also promises multi-character scenes, with several characters talking at once, and trips into fantasy realms.

Now the friction. DreamGen is a writing tool wearing a companion costume. Warmth is available, but you have to direct it, and sometimes you just want to be met halfway. If you open it after a long day hoping to be comforted, you'll end up doing the steering yourself.

So my honest sort: writers and roleplayers, come in. People looking for an easy, affectionate chat, look at my other app reviews first.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

What DreamGen allows, and how you steer it

DreamGen's content policy allows adult content. The record names no content filter switch or mode, so I won't describe one. What you get instead is direction: the scenario you write and the prose controls decide what a story looks like.

For me, that is the right model. The app doesn't push a tone on you, and it doesn't hide the level behind a pricier plan, as far as the published plans show. The difference between plans is context and credits, not permission.

Characters are built with a scenario editor and a Scenario Wizard. The homepage invites you to craft your own worlds, full of characters and deep lore. That matters to me as a queer reader: nobody hands you a default girlfriend and assumes who you are. You write the cast, and every character is whoever you make them.

Media is modest. Images come from credits, and the image credit cost is shown before you generate, which I like, because nobody enjoys a surprise bill. No official page says a word about video, and voice isn't offered officially either. If you want to hear a character's voice, this is not your app.

The one limit on steering is the context window. On the smaller plans a long scene can drift, and you may need to restate who is who. That's a plan choice, not a content rule.

My view: DreamGen treats you as an adult writer, which is refreshing. The price of that freedom is work. You get what you ask for, and you have to ask clearly.

If an open content level is your main criterion, my list of the best uncensored AI apps compares the options on policy alone.

Who DreamGen suits

  • Readers who need the free credit numbers before signing up

What DreamGen costs, and what I spent

I paid for Starter at $7.83 a month from March 2024, about $23.49 across my ten weeks. It's still $7.83 today, and it's still the plan I'd point most people to.

Here is how the three plans differ in practice. Starter gives a 5,000-token context, 375 monthly credits and 45 extra daily credits. Advanced, at $19.35, triples the context to 15,000 tokens and raises the credits to 2,250 a month plus 75 daily.

Pro, at $48.30, doubles the context again to 30,000 and adds 20% off credit packs and up to 60% off select third-party models.

The word "unlimited" on every plan needs a footnote. The FAQ says it means specific models cost zero credits, so messages on those models don't touch your balance. Daily credits only switch on after you've used the monthly allowance.

One rule to know: monthly and daily plan credits do not roll over. Credits from packs do, and they're spent only after the recurring limits run out.

There's also a first-month discount right now: 20% off Starter and Advanced, 30% off Pro.

Which DreamGen plan is worth your money

Starter at $7.83 is my pick for most readers. It covers the prose controls, unlimited use of the covered models and a modest context, and that was enough for my weekend writing. At that price, I think it's one of the fairest paid starts in the genre.

Move to Advanced at $19.35 only if your stories run long. Three times the context means the app keeps far more of your cast and plot in view, and that fixes the forgotten-name problem better than any prompt trick.

Pro at $48.30 is for heavy users who want the pack and third-party model discounts. I'd skip it unless you already know you burn through credits every month.

Take the first-month discount on whichever plan you pick, and remember the unlimited label only covers specific models. The table of what each DreamGen plan costs is below.

DreamGen option Billed Cost Works out per month
Starter monthly $7.83 $7.83
Advanced monthly $19.35 $19.35
Pro monthly $48.30 $48.30

The closest alternative I would suggest

That card sets a partner app next to DreamGen, and the two are built for different moods. My quick sort:

  • Stay with DreamGen if you want to steer a story and write your own cast.
  • Look elsewhere if you want voice calls or a companion that feels warm without being directed.
  • Stay with DreamGen if you like that model training is opt-in.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a phone app rather than a browser tab.

Candy AI is the clearest contrast. Its 1-Month Plan at €13.99 lists unlimited text messages, custom companions, image and video generation, and it lists voice calls as a feature. That is a companion product through and through, where DreamGen is a writing desk. My Candy AI verdict covers how it holds up.

My take: pick DreamGen for control and privacy, pick the partner card for warmth and media. If you're unsure which you want, the free tiers will tell you in one evening.

The good and bad of DreamGen

What went well

  • Steerable prose controls for tone and length
  • Training on your stories only if you opt in
  • Clear context window per plan, from 4,000 to 30,000 tokens
  • Starter plan at $7.83 a month with unlimited use of covered models
  • Prorated refunds offered in the pricing FAQ

What fell short

  • Warmth has to be directed; it rarely meets you halfway
  • Free credit numbers are not published
  • No voice calls or video
  • Plan credits do not roll over

Cancelling DreamGen, and what refunds look like

My ten weeks ended in May 2024. If yours end too, DreamGen makes leaving easy on paper. The pricing FAQ promises you can quit whenever you like without being asked why. Go to Manage Subscription, where "Cancel Subscription" is the top button.

Plan changes sit under Account > Billing. After you cancel, the plan keeps working until the period you paid for runs out.

Renewal is standard. The terms say you pay for each period up front, and it repeats on whatever plan you picked. So cancel before the next billing date if you don't want another month.

Refunds are where the paperwork disagrees with itself. The pricing FAQ says, "We offer prorated refunds," depending on the days remaining and whether you've asked for a refund before, and that most are processed within 2 business days. Requests go to [email protected].

Section 6.2 of the terms treats every purchase as final with no refund, apart from what consumer protection law demands or what the service chooses at its sole discretion.

How I read that: the FAQ describes the practice, and the terms keep the right to say no. I still count a published prorated refund as a real point in DreamGen's favour, because most apps in this space offer nothing of the kind. But a first refund is the one to use wisely, since the FAQ says earlier requests count.

My advice: if a month disappoints you, email early, while plenty of days remain. And downgrade to Starter before you cancel outright if the only problem is price.

My page on how I check the apps explains why refund rules weigh on the score. The billing note below lays out the exact wording.

Will DreamGen show up on your bank statement?

The statement descriptor for DreamGen is not on record, and neither are the accepted payment methods. So I can't tell you what name you'll see on a statement. If discretion matters, check the first receipt and your statement before committing to a longer run.

Is DreamGen safe with your stories?

This is where DreamGen won me over. The privacy policy promises that your data, like scenario definitions or story and role-play history, stays out of training and improving AI models unless you explicitly opt in.

Opt-in-only training is the most consent-forward feature in the genre. Consent-based data practices are part of my professional ethics as a library technician, so DreamGen got my $7.83 without a negotiation. For a fanfic writer, it matters twice: your drafts are your drafts.

Deletion is clear too. When you delete content or your account, DreamGen says it removes the applicable data from its active systems "within a reasonable period (typically ≤35 days)." I'd like an exact number instead of "typically," but a stated window beats silence.

Is DreamGen legit? It's run by Rozum AG, a Swiss company, with published terms, a privacy policy and a privacy FAQ. The launch year is not on record, so I can't give you its age. As a service, it looks solid to me.

The rest of the privacy basics apply as anywhere. Keep your full name, address and workplace out of your stories, even with training off.

If you'd like to see how character-driven apps compare on privacy and features, my ranking of the best AI character chat apps sets them side by side.

Final word on DreamGen

Final score

7.4/10

Solid

DreamGen is the one I would defend in an argument: a steerable writing engine with consent-first data terms, just not a companion that meets you halfway.

Used hands-on with a paid plan

  • The prose obeys when I pin tone and length, but warmth has to be directed rather than offered.
  • Context grows with each plan, and reviewers saw long scenes stay coherent until side characters slipped.
  • Steerable prose controls work like editing a manuscript, and scenarios can hold several characters.
  • Images cost credits, and there is no voice or video on record.
  • I paid $7.83 for Starter without negotiating, and prorated refunds are on offer.
  • Chats train nothing unless you opt in, and deletion clears active systems within weeks.
  • A clearly named Swiss company, and my ten weeks logged no bugs.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: worth it for writers and roleplayers who like to direct, a poor match if you'd like a companion to make the first move.

The plan I'd buy is Starter at $7.83 a month, the same one I paid for in 2024. It covers the prose controls and keeps the risk low, and the prorated refund FAQ makes it lower still.

What bothers me most is the warmth gap. DreamGen will give you tenderness if you write it into the scene, but it won't offer it on its own. Skip it if you want voice, video, a phone app or an easy evening chat.

Keep it if you want the best steering in the genre and a privacy policy that asks before it learns from you.

The closest alternative I would suggest

Better picks if DreamGen isn't your style

DreamGen suits people who like to direct. If you'd rather be met halfway, here is where I'd look instead:

  • You want a companion who remembers you: Nomi AI lists memory as a feature, and you get 50 free messages daily.
  • You want voice calls: Candy AI and OurDream AI both list voice calls as a feature, which DreamGen doesn't offer.
  • You want video: OurDream AI's Standard Monthly at $19.99 includes access to image and video generation.
  • You want a phone app: Nomi AI runs on iOS and Android as well as the web.

If you want a large roleplay platform with a chat focus, my SpicyChat review is worth a look too.

What none of these give you is DreamGen's steering. You trade control for warmth, and whether that's a good trade depends on why you open the app. I open it to write. You might open it to be heard.

Privacy is the other thing I'd compare carefully. DreamGen's opt-in training rule is the bar I now hold other apps to, so read each alternative's privacy page before you move your stories.

My friend advice: if you write, stay. If you want company, try Nomi AI's free plan for a week and see if its warmth is what you were missing.

Instead of DreamGen

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

The three cards below are the apps I'd suggest if DreamGen's writer-first style isn't for you. Two list voice calls, and one has a permanent free plan with a daily message allowance. None of them has DreamGen's prose controls, so if steering the story is what you love, you may find them loose.

If warmth and media matter more than control, they're a better fit. Each card opens a full review with the plans, the billing details and the refund wording, so you can compare before you spend.

DreamGen AI: common questions

What is DreamGen AI?

DreamGen is a web app for AI roleplay and story writing from Rozum AG in Switzerland. You build scenarios with one or more characters using a scenario editor or the Scenario Wizard, and steer tone and length with prose controls. It also generates images on credits. The interface is in English.

Is DreamGen free?

Yes, there is a free tier. The pricing FAQ says it includes access to all current AI models, limited monthly and daily credit usage and a 4,000-token context. The exact free credit numbers are not published, and one outside review says the free tier runs out in an afternoon of use.

How much does DreamGen cost?

Starter is $7.83 a month, Advanced is $19.35 and Pro is $48.30. They differ in context window, from 5,000 to 30,000 tokens, and in monthly and daily credits. I paid for Starter at $7.83 in 2024. A first-month discount of 20% on Starter and Advanced and 30% on Pro is listed now.

Does DreamGen train on my stories?

Not unless you opt in. The privacy policy says DreamGen does not use your data, such as scenario definitions or story and role-play history, to train or improve AI models unless you explicitly opt in. For me, that was the deciding reason to pay.

Can I get a refund from DreamGen?

Possibly. The pricing FAQ says DreamGen offers prorated refunds, depending on the days remaining and whether you have asked before, with most processed within 2 business days. The terms say purchases are final except where consumer law requires a refund or at the service's discretion.

How do I cancel DreamGen?

Open Manage Subscription and use the "Cancel Subscription" button at the top. Per the FAQ, you may cancel at any moment and nobody asks for a reason; you keep access until your paid period is over. Plan changes are under Account > Billing.

Does DreamGen have voice calls?

No. Voice calls are not mentioned on any official page, and video isn't either. DreamGen is text and images. If hearing a companion matters to you, look at an app that lists voice calls as a feature.
