Character AI prompts that fit the app's rules
What makes a good Character AI prompt?
Here is my short answer: a good prompt tells the character who they are, where the scene takes place and what is happening right now. Everything else is seasoning. Most prompts that fall flat are vague on at least one of those three, and the character fills the gap with something generic.
On Character AI you can create characters of your own, and the free plan offers unlimited messaging on its PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models. That combination is what makes it a good place to practise. You can rewrite an opening, start over and try a different angle without paying anything, only with ads and slow mode when the service is busy.
The four ingredients I'd put in every prompt:
- A name and two or three personality traits that show up in how they talk
- A place and a moment, such as a rainy bookshop at closing time
- What the character wants in this scene, so they have a reason to act
- Your own role, in one line, so the character knows who they are talking to
I like prompts that stay short. A tight, specific setup gives the character something to hold on to, while a wall of backstory tends to get diluted. You can always add detail later in the chat, when it matters.
If an old conversation has gone stale and you want a genuinely clean start, my guide on removing old Character AI conversations explains what can be cleared and what cannot. Sometimes a fresh chat with a better prompt beats rescuing a tired one.
The table right after this text, The apps side by side, shows Character AI next to five other apps. It is handy if you are deciding whether your prompts belong on Character AI at all, or on an app with different content rules or stronger memory.

A Character AI prompt template you can copy
Here is the template I'd hand a friend. Fill in the brackets in your head, not on the page, and write it as one short paragraph in your opening message or your character's description:
- Who: a name, a role and two or three traits, for example a sharp-tongued ship's navigator who hates small talk
- Where: one concrete place with one sensory detail, like a lantern-lit deck in a storm
- Now: the situation at the exact moment the chat begins, such as the mast has just cracked
- Goal: what the character wants from you in this scene
- Voice: how they speak, like short sentences, dry humour, never swears
Put together, that becomes something like: "Mara is the navigator of a small trading ship, sharp-tongued and loyal. A storm has just cracked the mast, and she needs your help to keep the ship afloat until dawn." Two sentences, and the character knows exactly how to open.
Notice what is missing: no life story, no list of twenty traits, no rules about what she must never do. The scene does that work for you.
My favourite part of this template is the Now line. It turns a description into a scene, and scenes are what make a chat feel alive. Without it, many characters just introduce themselves and wait. My full Character AI review covers the rest of the app, from voice calls to group chat, if you want the wider picture.
Why does a strong prompt still drift after a while?
Because memory is limited, even on a good app. Other reviewers report strong recall of buried facts, but also that it will confidently add believable details of its own, like a hotel or a cake nobody mentioned. They also describe long chats getting messy, with a promise from ten messages earlier forgotten despite the Auto Memories feature.
That is not a reason to give up on prompts. It is a reason to repeat the important bits. The paid plans help here: (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ both list 30 memory pins, which is the tool I'd use to anchor the details that must not change. On the free plan, a quick recap line every so often does a similar job by hand.

Character AI prompt ideas for every mood
Stuck for a starting point? These are the ideas I'd reach for, each one built on the who, where and now pattern. They stay within Character AI's rules, since its policy on file allows no adult content, and they work well on the free plan.
- A detective who needs your help with one last case before retiring, in a city where it never stops raining
- A dragon who has guarded a library for a thousand years and has never had a visitor who could read
- A space station cook on the night shift, the only other person awake when the alarms go off
- An old friend you haven't seen in ten years, sitting across from you in a café, working up to an apology
- A rival chef in a cooking contest who has just tasted your dish and looks worried
What I love about ideas like these is that each has built-in tension. Something is at stake the moment the chat opens, so the character has a reason to talk. A prompt like "a nice person who likes music" gives the model nothing to push against, and the replies show it.
Character AI also supports group chat, which opens up another angle. A detective and a rival suspect in the same room make for a livelier scene than either alone. If you enjoy building your own cast, making custom characters is part of Character AI, so you can set up the whole ensemble yourself.
If you want roleplay with adult themes, though, Character AI is the wrong home, and no prompt changes that. Pick an app whose rules actually permit it instead. My list of Character AI alternatives compares the options by content level, memory and free plan, so you can match the app to the stories you want.
One practical tip: keep a short note of the prompts that work well for you. A good setup is reusable across characters and even across apps, because the ingredients do not change. The facts box right below shows OurDream AI at a glance, one of the apps where adult roleplay is allowed under its own policy.

Character AI prompts for romance: what fits the rules?
Romance is one of the most searched prompt themes, so let me be clear about the line. Character AI's content policy on file allows no adult content. A sweet, slow-burn romance fits: two people meeting at a train station, a long-distance letter exchange, a first date that goes gently wrong.
Anything past that, the app is not built for, and I'd rather tell you that up front than let you find out mid-scene.
Within the line, romance prompts work best when they lean on feelings and situation rather than on physical detail. Put the two characters somewhere they both have cause to be, add a small obstacle and something unsaid between them. A prompt like "we have been writing to each other for months and are about to meet for the first time" carries far more charge than a list of traits.
Please don't try to trick the filter with clever wording. Trying to get around an app's content rules usually breaks its terms and can get an account suspended or banned, and you'd lose your characters and chats along with it. That is a bad trade for one scene, and nothing on file suggests any plan unlocks a different level either.
If adult romance is what you want, pick an app whose policy allows it. On this page, SpicyChat allows adult content and offers unlimited free text chat on its Default model, and Nomi AI allows it with a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day. OurDream AI allows it too, with chat paid in Dreamcoins.
Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT allow adult content on paid plans only, so the free plan is only a preview there.
My take for most readers: keep Character AI for the sweet, story-first romances it handles within its rules, and use one of those apps for anything beyond. Both kinds of story are valid; they just belong in different places. I'd rather you enjoy both than spend your evenings arguing with a policy that will not move.
For more answers on content rules, privacy and billing across these apps, my help and guides page gathers them in one place, so you can check a policy before you invest hours in a character.

Is there a Character AI system prompt you can edit?
Short answer: not one I can point to. There is no feature called a system prompt in the Character AI records I work from, and I won't invent a hidden box for you. What you do control is how you write the characters you build, what you say in your messages and, on paid plans, what you pin to memory.
In practice, that is plenty. The character you create acts as your standing instructions, and your opening message sets the scene. The paid tiers add two more levers on file: memory pins, 30 of them on both (c.ai) lite and c.ai+, and premium chat styles, a daily allowance on lite and unlimited on c.ai+. There is also chat customization on the lite plan.
I actually prefer this setup for most people, especially anyone who is new to writing characters. A system-level box invites overthinking, while writing a clear character keeps the focus on the story you want to tell.
Does paying make your Character AI prompts work better?
Somewhat, and in specific ways. The free plan runs on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr with unlimited messaging, full ads and slow mode when the service is busy. That is enough to learn how prompts behave.
For $4.99 a month, (c.ai) lite brings the daily premium chat-style messages, fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. c.ai+, at $9.99 a month, takes away both ads and slow mode and makes premium chat styles unlimited.
If your problem is characters forgetting key facts, the memory pins are the upgrade that targets it, and lite is the cheapest way in. If your problem is waiting in slow mode, c.ai+ is the one. The annual c.ai+ plan is $94.99 a year, shown against $119.88, but I'd only buy a year once you know you'll stay.
The terms say payments are non-refundable except where required by law, so a year you stop using is still gone.
My views here come from the plans and policies Character AI publishes, never from guesses about how the model works inside. My page on how I check the apps lays out that method, including why I leave a gap whenever a fact is simply not published anywhere.
Prompt habits that keep a Character AI story on track
A good opening only gets you so far. These habits keep a chat coherent once it is rolling, and none of them cost anything.
First, play one scene at a time. When a scene ends, say so, and set up the next with a line about where and when. Characters handle clear jumps far better than a story that slowly blurs.
Second, repeat what matters. If a name, a promise or a key detail has to survive, bring it back every so often. Given what other reviewers describe about promises forgotten after ten messages, I'd treat this as essential, not optional.
Third, correct gently and early. If a character invents a detail you don't want, say what really happened in your next message, before the invented version settles in. Waiting only makes it stick.
Fourth, keep your own messages focused. One action and one line of dialogue give the character a clear cue. Long paragraphs covering five things tend to get half an answer.
Fifth, use the tools the app gives you. Character AI supports group chat, so a second character can carry part of the story when one starts to repeat itself. On a paid (c.ai) lite or c.ai+ plan, spend your memory pins on the details the whole story depends on, not on small ones.
My friend-to-friend verdict on Character AI prompts
My one-paragraph version for a friend goes like this. Character AI is a very good sandbox for learning to write prompts, because the free plan is unlimited and building your own characters is part of it. Use the who, where, now, goal and voice template, keep it short, and repeat the details that matter.
Pay only for a specific problem. Memory pins on (c.ai) lite for characters that forget, c.ai+ for no slow mode. Don't pay hoping for a different content level, because the policy on file is the same on every plan.
And if the stories you want to write need adult themes, that is a sign to switch apps rather than fight the rules. I answer that question in full in my Character AI NSFW explainer. For everything else, the free plan and a well-built character will take you a long way.
Common questions
What is the best Character AI prompt template?
A simple five-part setup works best: who the character is, where the scene takes place, what is happening right now, what the character wants, and how they speak. Two or three sentences are enough. The "right now" part matters most, because it turns a description into a scene and gives the character a reason to act from the first message.
Does Character AI have a system prompt?
There is no feature by that name in the records on file. What you control is the character you build, your own messages and, on paid plans, 30 memory pins on (c.ai) lite or c.ai+. The character you create works as your standing instructions, so write it clearly and keep it short.
Can I write romance prompts on Character AI?
Yes, within its rules. The content policy on file allows no adult content, so sweet and slow-burn romance fits, while anything beyond does not. For adult romance, apps like SpicyChat and Nomi AI allow it under their own policies and both have free plans.
Why does my character forget my prompt?
Memory is limited on every app. Other reviewers report good recall of buried facts on Character AI, but also long chats getting messy and promises forgotten. Repeat key details now and then, correct invented details early, and consider (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month for its 30 memory pins if forgetting is your main problem.
Do I need c.ai+ for good prompts?
No. The free plan offers unlimited messaging on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, which is enough to write and refine prompts. At $9.99 a month, c.ai+ drops the ads and slow mode and makes premium chat styles unlimited. Payments are non-refundable except where required by law, so try the free plan first.
Can a prompt get past the Character AI filter?
I won't help with that, and I'd advise against trying. Getting around an app's content rules usually breaks its terms and can get an account banned, taking your characters with it. If you want adult content, choose an app whose policy allows it instead.
