How to use DeepSeek on Janitor AI, step by step

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

How do you add DeepSeek to Janitor AI?

Short version: you connect it as a proxy, using an API key you get yourself. Janitor AI's official help centre keeps separate proxy guides for OpenRouter and for DeepSeek, which tells me this is a supported route, not a hack. The key goes into the chat's settings, and from then on your messages can run on that outside model instead of the built-in JLLM.

Here is how to add DeepSeek to Janitor AI, in the order I'd do it:

  • Open the official DeepSeek proxy guide in Janitor AI's help centre and keep it next to you
  • Get an API key from the provider you pick, either DeepSeek itself or a router such as OpenRouter
  • Inside a chat, open Settings > API Settings > Add Configuration, then paste the key in
  • Copy any model or address values straight from the help-centre guide rather than from memory
  • Send a short test message and check that a proper reply comes back

I am deliberately not listing model names or addresses here. The records on file do not include them, and those details change often enough that a copy on a review site goes stale fast. The help-centre guide is the one source I'd trust for them.

A quick but important note on money before you start: the key is yours, so the provider's usage charges are yours too. Janitor AI's free plan stays free either way. The cost question gets its own section below, because it is the part people skip.

If you are arriving from Character AI and want to tidy up before moving your stories across, my steps for wiping your Character AI chat history cover that side.

Right after this section, a comparison table sets Janitor AI next to five other chat apps, which helps if you are still deciding where to write.

Janitor AI Yes $12.99 Mature chat permitted
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted

What changes when Janitor AI runs on DeepSeek instead of JLLM?

The model writing the replies changes, which is exactly why you'd bother. On the free plan, Janitor AI uses its own JLLM model. Its help centre puts JLLM's working memory for a chat at 8,000 to 9,000 tokens or so, and anything older than that starts to drop out. On the free model, other reviewers report that details start slipping within 20-30 messages.

What DeepSeek's own context size is on Janitor AI is not in the records, so I can't promise it remembers more. Here is what stays put after you make the switch:

  • Your characters, personas and their greetings, since those live on Janitor AI
  • The platform's content rules, which are Janitor AI's and do not move with the model
  • Your free Janitor AI account, which the June 2026 announcement says stays completely free
  • The text-only format, since Janitor AI lists no voice calls, image generation or video

In my view, the honest reason to try DeepSeek is the writing style, not a guaranteed memory upgrade. If JLLM's replies feel samey to you, a different model is a fair experiment. If memory is your main complaint, restating key facts in your messages is still the free fix.

Does DeepSeek on Janitor AI cost money?

The Janitor side can cost nothing. The model side usually does. When you bring your own key, the provider charges for what you use, at its own rates, and those rates are not on file here. Check them on the provider's pricing page before a long session.

There is a second, paid route: JanitorRouter, Janitor AI's own optional proxy. It is currently limited to Janitor+ subscribers, and usage is billed per token at the rate shown for each model. The records do not list which models Router offers, so don't assume DeepSeek is among them.

You can't get Router credits refunded unless the law says you must, and that is the detail I'd weigh most.

Janitor+ itself is $12.99 a month and lists 5x more context, unlimited priority messages and more swipes with frontier models. My full Janitor AI review covers whether that is worth it for you.

Is DeepSeek on Janitor AI better than an app with a strong model built in?

That hinges on your appetite for tinkering, and it is a genuine fork in the road. A proxy hands you control over the model, and your bill follows your actual usage. The trade-off is that you manage a key, a provider account and a second bill. Some people love that; others just want to chat.

The other apps in the feature table take the second path: the model is part of the plan, and you pay one price. Here is what their plans put on the table instead of a proxy:

  • Nomi AI charges $15.99 for its Standard Plan Monthly, covering voice calls, unlimited messaging and 10 active group chats at most
  • SpicyChat's True Supporter is $19.95 a month, with 8K context, semantic memory 2.0 and more AI models
  • GirlfriendGPT's Deluxe is $35.00 a month and lists 8K memory context plus a monthly allowance of 20,000 messages
  • OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99, with unlimited messages and 1,000 dreamcoins every month
  • Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, bundling 100 tokens a month with unlimited text chat

What none of them gives you is a choice of outside model through your own key, at least nothing on file says so. That flexibility is Janitor AI's strength. It is also why I'd call the proxy route a hobbyist's choice, not the pick if you just want a companion that works out of the box.

The cost also differs in shape: a subscription is a fixed monthly number, while a proxy bill moves with how much you chat. Heavy weeks cost more.

Another difference is format. Janitor AI is text-only on file, while voice calls appear on the records of Nomi AI, Candy AI and OurDream AI. No choice of model adds a voice to Janitor AI, so if hearing a reply matters to you, a proxy will not close that gap.

My take: try DeepSeek on Janitor AI if you already like its character library and want different writing. If you mostly want less setup and more features in one bill, my ranked Janitor AI alternatives is the better next click. The box below sums up OurDream AI, one of the all-in-one options.

Is your chat private when Janitor AI uses DeepSeek?

This is the question I'd think about before pasting a key anywhere. When you use a proxy, your messages are sent to the outside model to get a reply. That means the provider you picked handles your chat text, on top of Janitor AI itself.

Their privacy rules apply to what they receive, and those rules are not in the records here, so read them on the provider's own site.

On Janitor AI's side, the records are thin. Training on chats is marked unclear, with no official statement on file. Deletion is the clear part: removing your account is permanent, and posts, characters, personas and profile information are wiped with no way back.

You'll find it at Settings > Security > Delete account, and a 6-digit code sent to your email confirms it.

My practical advice is simple and costs nothing. Treat anything you type through a proxy as text two companies may see. Leave out your real name, where you live and any detail you'd be upset to see leaked. And guard the API key like a password, because anyone who has it can run up charges on your provider account.

Never paste it into a character description or a public post, and replace it if you think it has leaked.

There is a middle ground if privacy is your main worry. You can stick with JLLM, Janitor AI's own model, and never connect a proxy. Your chats then stay with Janitor AI alone, which is one company to trust instead of two.

You give up the choice of model, but you also skip a second account, a second privacy policy and a second place where your chat text might be stored. For some people that trade is an easy yes.

For comparison, the app in the box above, OurDream AI, bundles chat with image and video generation in its Standard plans, so everything sits on one bill. Its charges carry the name DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, worth knowing if a discreet statement matters.

Privacy is one of several questions worth answering before you commit to any setup. My help guides for companion and roleplay apps go through deletion, billing names and cancelling across the apps on file, in plain words and without the jargon.

What if the DeepSeek connection stops working?

Most failures come from the setup, not the model. Before anything else, compare every value in your configuration with the official help-centre guide, character by character. A single stray space in a pasted key is enough to break it.

Next, check the provider side. A key can stop working if your balance runs out or the key is revoked, and Janitor AI cannot fix either of those for you. Log in to the provider's dashboard and look.

Then check Janitor AI itself. It has an official status page at status.janitorai.com that tracks its backend and frontend. If that shows a problem, no proxy setting will help until it clears.

Finally, switch back to JLLM for a moment. If the built-in model replies normally, the fault sits with the proxy configuration or the provider. If JLLM fails too, it's the platform.

One more habit I like: when a setup works, write down the values you used somewhere private, outside the app. If a configuration gets deleted or you move to a new device, you can restore it quickly instead of hunting through the guide again. Just keep the key itself somewhere safe, like a password manager, not in a plain note.

Can you use DeepSeek on the Janitor AI mobile app?

Janitor AI publishes official apps on both iOS and Android. The records do not say whether proxy settings are available or behave the same inside those apps, so I'd set the connection up on the web first, where the help-centre steps apply.

One mobile detail is on file, and it is worth knowing: to meet Apple and Google store rules, the apps turn one content setting off by default, and it is switched on through the web settings. If replies on your phone seem more restrained than on your laptop, that setting is the likelier cause, not DeepSeek.

My view is that phone users should treat the web as the control room. Set things up there, then chat wherever you like. This page lays out the facts on file and my opinion of them; it is not a lab report. Curious about the method behind my verdicts? My page on how I check the apps lays it out.

Does DeepSeek change what Janitor AI allows?

No. The rules come from the platform, not the model. Janitor AI permits adult content across the platform for users over 18, and its mobile apps keep it off by default until you switch it on through the web settings. Connecting DeepSeek does not change Janitor AI's policy in either direction.

There is one wrinkle I'd flag. The provider behind your key has terms of its own, and some providers set their own limits on what they will generate. Those terms are not in the records here, so check them first if you plan a particular kind of story on that model. If a reply gets declined, the cause may sit with the provider rather than with Janitor AI.

What I'd never suggest is using a proxy to dodge an app's rules elsewhere. On Character AI, for example, no model trick changes the policy, and trying breaks the terms. My explainer on Character AI's NSFW rules goes through why.

Is this Janitor AI DeepSeek guide worth following for you?

Here is my friend-to-friend answer. If you like Janitor AI's characters, enjoy a bit of setup and want a different writing voice, yes: follow the help-centre guide, add your key and test it on one chat. Keep an eye on the provider's usage page for the first few sessions.

It is the one place that shows what your chatting really costs, and a quick look early on saves an unpleasant surprise later.

If you want predictable costs, stay on JLLM or pick one flat subscription. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month adds 5x more context without any key to manage, which is the simpler upgrade in my view. And if you want voice or images, switch apps rather than models, since Janitor AI lists neither.

Nomi AI, for instance, lets free users send 50 messages daily and adds voice calls on its paid plans, all without any key to paste.

Whatever you choose, the free start is the smart one. Janitor AI's built-in model costs nothing, so learn what you like there first, then decide whether a proxy is worth a second bill. The FAQ below handles the leftover setup and billing questions.

Common questions

Is DeepSeek free on Janitor AI?

Janitor AI's free plan is free, but an outside model usually is not. When you connect DeepSeek with your own API key, the provider bills you for usage at its own rates, which are not on file here. Check the provider's pricing before a long session, and keep an eye on usage early on.

Where do I put the API key in Janitor AI?

Open a chat, then go to Settings > API Settings > Add Configuration, then paste your key. Copy the other values, such as the model name, straight from Janitor AI's official DeepSeek proxy guide in its help centre. Then send one short message to confirm replies come back.

Do I need Janitor+ to use DeepSeek?

Not for your own key: the proxy route works with a key you bring yourself. Janitor+ is needed only for JanitorRouter, Janitor AI's own optional proxy, which bills usage per token at the rate shown for each model. The records do not list which models Router offers.

Will DeepSeek make Janitor AI remember more?

The records do not give DeepSeek's context size on Janitor AI, so I can't promise it. Free JLLM keeps a chat's last 8,000-9,000 tokens in view, and older parts fall away. Janitor+ lists 5x more context, which is the documented memory upgrade.

Can Janitor AI see my chats if I use a proxy?

With a proxy, your messages go to the outside provider to get replies, so both companies handle the text. Janitor AI's records mark chat training as unclear. Keep real personal details out of your stories and read the provider's privacy terms before you connect.

Can I get a refund on JanitorRouter credits?

Only where the law requires it. Router credits are otherwise kept, and Janitor+ subscriptions are generally non-refundable too. Start with a small amount of credit and test the setup before adding more, so a mistake costs little.
