How to delete Character AI chats and your account

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Can you delete single chats, or only the whole account?

Maybe you searched how to delete conversations on Character AI one at a time. The official help article I can point you to covers one thing: deleting your whole account. It says plainly that "Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed."

A route for wiping one conversation, message or character is not part of the facts I have, so I will not invent a button.

That shapes my advice. If you only want to tidy up, say you are after how to delete recent chats on Character AI, look at the app itself before doing anything drastic, because the account route removes everything at once. If you want your data gone, though, account deletion is the documented way, and for many people I'd say it's the correct choice.

Why would you want your data gone? Character AI states that it keeps some of the data you share so it can train and improve its AI models. That is the main reason I take deletion seriously.

Your chats are not only a private diary; they can feed the models, which is part of the bigger picture of how Character AI makes money from a free service.

Before you decide, here is what I would weigh:

  • Whether you only want a clean screen, or want your data off the service
  • Whether you pay for c.ai+ or (c.ai) lite, which you should cancel first
  • Whether there are stories or characters you want to keep, since deletion cannot be undone
  • Whether you live in the EEA or UK, where a training opt-out exists

If you are leaving for good, you will probably want somewhere else to chat afterwards. The table right after this text, The apps side by side, compares Character AI with the apps people often move to, including their free plans. I find it helps to pick your next app before you delete, so you are not starting from nothing.

How do I delete my Character AI account on the web?

The web route sits in your profile. According to the official help article, the path is:

  • Open Profile, then Profile Settings
  • Go to Account, then Manage Account & Data
  • Choose Delete Account and confirm

That is how to permanently delete Character AI account data on the web, with no undo. My advice is to slow down right before the final click. Copy out whatever matters to you, a character's backstory you wrote yourself or a line from a story you loved, somewhere outside the app. Once the account is gone, the help article is clear that it cannot be reversed.

One thing I wish the article said: it does not state a specific time window for when the data is actually gone after deletion. I would like to see a clear number of days there, the way some privacy policies spell it out. Until then, I would treat deletion as the strongest step you can take, not as proof that every copy disappears on the same day.

How to delete Character AI account on mobile

On the iOS and Android apps, the route is shorter. The help article gives it as Profile, then the Settings icon, then Remove Account. The wording differs from the web, "Remove" rather than "Delete", but it is the same account deletion, and it is just as permanent.

Two practical points before you tap. First, if you subscribed to c.ai+ through the App Store or Google Play, cancel it there as well. The help centre sends store subscribers to Apple Support or Google Play Support, which tells me the subscription lives with the store, not with your Character AI profile.

Second, deleting the app from your phone is not the same as deleting your account. The account stays until you remove it through the steps above.

So, can you delete a Character AI account? Yes, on both web and mobile, and permanently. Should you? That depends on whether you want to come back later.

If you might, cancel the plan and keep the account. If you are sure, delete it. For a full picture of what you would be leaving behind, including the free plan and what paid plans add, my Character AI review covers the app in detail.

How to delete Character AI data used for training

Deleting your account is one step. Stopping your chats from feeding the models is another, and for many people it is the one that matters more. Character AI says what you share can be kept and used to train and improve its AI models. Readers in the EEA or the UK can switch that off and keep their account.

The opt-out lives in two places, depending on where you use the app:

  • On the app: Settings, then Data & Privacy
  • On the web: Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, then Model Improvement
  • In both cases, untick "Improve the Model for Everyone"

Here is the catch I do not like. Even after an opt-out, Character AI keeps the right to use data for search, recommendations and its safety classifiers. So the opt-out narrows how your chats are used rather than switching everything off. And for anyone living beyond the EEA and UK, the records describe no opt-out whatsoever.

For readers elsewhere, account deletion is the only documented route, which is a blunt tool for a privacy question. I would much rather see the same opt-out offered to everyone, wherever they live, because the reasons for wanting it do not stop at a border.

My advice: if you live in the EEA or UK and like the app, opt out and keep chatting. If you are elsewhere and privacy is the reason you are here, deleting the account is the cleaner move, and you can then pick an app that fits you better from the start.

If that is where you land, compare a few options before you settle. OurDream AI is one many people look at, with a free sign-up and 55 Dreamcoins to start, then 1 Dreamcoin per message. Its Standard Monthly plan at $19.99 includes unlimited messages with any AI character, plus image and video generation.

That is a very different model from Character AI's free unlimited chat, so think about how much you chat before you switch. The box below sums up OurDream AI's basics, and my list of Character AI alternatives compares more of them side by side, with their free plans first.

Can you delete characters on Character AI, or personas and bots?

This is one of the most common questions about the app, and I want to be straight with you. The Character AI help material in my facts covers deleting your whole account, not removing a single character, persona or bot you created. So I cannot give you a verified tap-by-tap route for how to delete characters in Character AI, and I will not guess at menus that may not exist.

What I can give you is sound general advice. Start by opening a character you made and looking through its own options, since that is the most natural first place to look. If you cannot find a removal option, the official help centre is the right place to ask, and it is the same place that documents account deletion.

Avoid third-party tools that promise to wipe your characters for you; you would be handing your login to a stranger.

It also helps to think about why you want a character gone. If you built one with a personality, backstory and voice using the creation tools, and you simply do not like it any more, editing it may be easier than removing it. If you want it gone because it holds details about your life, then the privacy question matters more than the character itself.

In that case, the training opt-out in the EEA and UK, or full account deletion elsewhere, deals with the real concern.

The same thinking applies to personas, and to anyone asking how to delete Character AI messages. Anything tied to your account disappears when the account does, and that is permanent. If you are only after a cleaner list, tidy what you can inside the app and leave the account alone.

If you are after privacy, a partial clean-up is not enough on its own, because deleted items say nothing about what was already used for training.

Finally, a word on paid features. If you are on (c.ai) lite or c.ai+, those plans include 30 memory pins, which hold details the character keeps in mind. When you tidy up, remember that pins are part of what the app remembers about your stories. For more guides like this one, from cancelling to privacy settings, see my help and how-to guides.

Should I delete Character AI, or just cancel c.ai+?

It depends on what is bothering you. If it is money, cancel the plan and keep the account. On the free plan you can still message without limit on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with full ads, slow mode and limited daily features, so you lose comfort, not access.

If it is privacy, deleting the account is the stronger step. If it is both, cancel first and delete second.

Cancelling comes first for a simple reason: the renewal. Character AI says it bills your payment method automatically at every agreed renewal until you cancel. Deleting your account is not described anywhere as a way to stop that charge, so I would never rely on it. Cancel the plan in the right place, see that the cancellation is confirmed, and only then delete.

How do you cancel c.ai+ before deleting?

The place to cancel is wherever you signed up. Web subscribers go to Settings, then Account, then Manage, which leads to the Customer Portal. You enter your account email and receive a secure link by email. If you subscribed in the iOS app, the help centre refers you to Apple Support; on Android, to Google Play Support.

Refunds are not generous. The rule says payments stay non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise. Store purchases are refunded through Apple or Google, and web purchases handled by Stripe go through a support request under "Payments and purchases." So if you are close to a renewal date, cancel now rather than after it passes.

Bought the $94.99 yearly plan? Same logic. Cancel so it does not renew, then decide whether to delete the account. Note that cancelling does not mean a refund for the time left, given the non-refundable rule.

This order also protects you if you change your mind. A cancelled plan can be restarted; a deleted account cannot. I would leave a short gap between the two steps, just to be sure.

If you want to know where each billing fact on this page comes from, the page on how I check the apps explains the sources I rely on, from help-centre articles to app store listings. Everything here is from the official pages, not from guesswork.

Why did Character AI delete my chats?

If chats seem to have vanished on their own, I understand the panic. The honest answer is that the reason is not in the records I rely on, so I cannot tell you what happened in your case. What I can do is suggest calm first steps.

Make sure you are signed in to the same account on the same login method you used before, since a second account can look like an empty one. Then check the official status page for an outage, and if nothing explains it, contact the help centre directly.

It is also worth knowing how the app handles content. Character AI's content policy allows no adult content on any plan, free or paid. People sometimes ask whether that policy is behind missing chats; I have no facts to say it is, so I would not assume it.

If you are curious about where the policy might go next, my Character AI NSFW explainer covers what is known.

How do you keep what matters before you delete?

Deletion is final, so the last step is the kindest one: save what you love. Copy out a character's personality and backstory if you wrote them yourself, and keep your favourite parts of a story in a note on your phone. That way you can rebuild a character in any app later, without starting from a blank page.

Then think about where you go next. If you want a similar free start, Character AI's rivals vary a lot. Nomi AI's free plan never runs out, allows 50 messages daily and shows no ads, which I find the calmest option for daily chat.

Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, and its terms let you cancel whenever you like under Settings / Unsubscribe. On SpicyChat, free text chat on the Default model has no cap, though you get ads and may wait in line.

Whatever you choose, carry over the habits from this guide. Check the training rules before you share personal details, find the cancel path before you pay, and remember that the account you create today is the one you may want to delete tomorrow.

Common questions

How do I delete my Character AI account?

On the web, go to Profile, then Profile Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, and choose Delete Account. On the mobile app, go to Profile, tap the Settings icon, and choose Remove Account. The help article says account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed, so copy out what you care about and cancel any c.ai+ plan before you delete.

Can you delete a Character AI account permanently?

Yes. The official help article says account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. It does not state a specific time window for when the data is fully gone after deletion, so treat deletion as the strongest step available rather than a guarantee about timing.

Does deleting my account cancel c.ai+?

The help article on deletion does not say that it cancels a subscription, so cancel separately first. Web subscribers use the Customer Portal via Settings, Account, Manage. App Store and Google Play subscribers cancel through Apple or Google. No refunds, except where the law requires one.

How do I delete Character AI data used for training?

EEA and UK users can opt out and keep the account: on the app, go to Settings, then Data & Privacy; on the web, go to Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Model Improvement, and untick Improve the Model for Everyone. Search, recommendations and safety classifiers can still draw on your data. Elsewhere, account deletion is the documented route.

Can you delete Character AI bots or characters you made?

The official help material in my facts covers deleting the whole account, not removing a single character, persona or bot. Look through the options of a character you created first, and ask the official help centre if you cannot find a way. Deleting the account removes everything tied to it, permanently.

Should I delete Character AI?

If privacy is your concern, especially outside the EEA and UK where no training opt-out is described, deleting the account is the cleaner step. If money is the concern, cancel c.ai+ and keep using the free plan, which offers unlimited messaging with ads. If you might come back, cancel instead of deleting, since deletion cannot be undone.
