Is Character AI bad? My honest verdict

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Is Character AI bad, or just not for everyone?

My verdict: no, Character AI isn't bad. As a free app it's very good, just built for a narrow purpose, and most complaints come from people wanting it to be something else. That said, it has real weak spots, and you deserve to see them listed plainly before you commit hours to it.

What it gets right is rare. Messaging is free and unlimited for all users, it runs on web, iOS and Android, and it has group chat, voice calls, images and custom characters. For a free start, that's about as generous as the apps on file get.

Here's where I think the criticism is fair:

  • Memory: the AI can invent confident extra details and lose track of promises in long chats
  • Voices: quality is uneven, with some voices good and others flat or delayed
  • Content: the policy allows no adult content on any plan, paid or free
  • Refunds: none by default, only where the law says a refund is owed
  • Free plan comfort: ads, plus slow mode when the service is busy

None of those makes it a scam or a trap. They make it an app with a clear shape. If you want long SFW stories and a big library of characters, the shape fits. If you want a companion who never forgets, or content for adults, it doesn't, and no plan will change that.

If you've already decided it's not for you and want to leave cleanly, my guide on wiping your Character AI chat history walks through it. I'd only suggest keeping a copy of any character you spent real time on.

The table right after this sets Character AI beside five other apps, with content policy, free start and price-from in one view. I'd read it with your own biggest complaint in mind, because the right replacement depends entirely on which weak spot bothers you most.

App Free option Lowest monthly cost Allowed
Character AI Yes $4.99 Unconfirmed
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted
GirlfriendGPT Yes $12.00 Mature chat, paid plans
SpicyChat Yes $5.00 Mature chat permitted

Why does Character AI have bad memory?

This is the complaint I take most seriously, because memory is what makes a character feel like someone rather than something. The records don't include a memory rating for Character AI, but reviewer reports paint a mixed picture:

  • Recall of buried facts can be strong without any help
  • The AI sometimes invents plausible details with the same confidence, such as a hotel or a cake that never came up
  • In long chats, a promise made ten messages earlier was forgotten, despite an Auto Memories feature
  • Paid plans add 30 memory pins, so you can fix the facts that matter

My take: the invented details bother me more than the forgetting. Forgetting is annoying. Confidently making things up is the kind of flaw that quietly breaks a story. If you use Character AI for long roleplay, pin the handful of facts you'd hate to lose, and keep an eye out for anything the AI "remembers" that you never said.

Is that worth paying for? Both paid plans come with the 30 memory pins: (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month and c.ai+ at $9.99. If memory is your only reason to upgrade, lite is the smarter buy. You get the same pin count for half the price, and fewer ads as a bonus. Only step up to c.ai+ if slow mode is the thing that drives you up the wall.

Is the free plan what makes Character AI feel bad?

Partly, yes. The free plan is unlimited, but it comes with full ads, slow mode at high load and limited daily features. On a busy evening, slow mode alone can make the app feel worse than it is. That's the trade for free and unlimited: you pay with patience instead of money.

c.ai+ removes ads and slow mode and gives the highest daily limits. For heavy daily users, I think $9.99 is fair for that. The annual plan, at $94.99 a year, comes to $7.92 a month, but I'd hold off on the annual plan until a single paid month shows you really keep coming back.

If you want every plan and feature laid out, my Character AI review with the full plan breakdown goes through them one by one.

Which apps do better where Character AI falls short?

No app is best at everything, so I'd match the replacement to the complaint. Each of these beats Character AI on one specific weak spot, going by the records, and each has its own catch.

  • Better memory: Nomi AI, which other reviewers describe as having proactive long-term memory and a "Mind Map" after about 500 messages
  • Adult content allowed: SpicyChat, with unlimited free text chat and a policy that allows it on every plan
  • Images and video in one place: OurDream AI, with image and video generation on its paid plans
  • Voice that feels real: Candy AI, where voice and phone-call audio get strong reviewer praise
  • Longer memory for sale: GirlfriendGPT, whose higher plans list 8K and 16K memory context

Now the catches, because swapping one set of flaws for another isn't progress. Nomi AI's free plan caps you at 50 messages a day and 400 characters each, far below Character AI's unlimited messaging. SpicyChat's free plan has ads and possible waiting lines, a lot like slow mode.

Candy AI's free start is only a handful of messages, and its memory is reported to hold for roughly 10 to 20 messages before drifting.

GirlfriendGPT is the one I'd be most careful with. Its bigger memory context sits on the Deluxe and Elite plans, at $35 and $50 a month, and one reviewer's week of checks on Premium showed it never recalled a detail they had planted on purpose. Paying more for memory only helps if the memory actually works.

So my honest shortlist is simple. If memory is what drives you away from Character AI, try Nomi AI's free plan first. If it's the content policy, try SpicyChat. If it's the lack of video, look at OurDream AI.

And if nothing on this list fixes your specific complaint, Character AI may still be the best fit, flaws included. Staying with an imperfect app you know beats paying for a new set of problems you haven't met yet.

Would OurDream AI fix what bugs you about Character AI?

It depends on the complaint. OurDream AI is a roleplay app with group chat and custom characters, like Character AI, but its policy allows adult content and its paid plans add image and video generation. So for two common complaints, content rules and no video, it's a genuine answer.

For the other complaints, I'm less sure. Memory appears on its feature list, the Deluxe plans advertise 3x chat memory, but there's no reviewer report on file that tests it. Voice calls are where it gets a real knock: other reviewers report calls draining coins fast, including images the reviewer didn't ask for.

So if cost surprises were your problem with Character AI, OurDream AI's coin meter could feel worse, not better.

Then there's money. Character AI's free plan is unlimited. OurDream AI's free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, while its help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins at all. Sources differ, so I'd count on very little free use. Standard Monthly is $19.99, twice the price of c.ai+.

What I do like is the billing side. The statement name is DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, cancelling is a button on your profile, and you keep what you paid for until that period runs out. The 14-day "Quality Guarantee" gives you a way to ask for a credit or refund, case by case. Compared with Character AI's non-refundable default, that's friendlier.

My verdict for someone who thinks Character AI is bad: if your issue is what the app won't do, OurDream AI may be your answer. If your issue is how well it does things, I'd look at Nomi AI's memory first and keep OurDream AI for when you want images and video. There's no rule that says you can only use one app, either.

Plenty of people keep Character AI for free SFW stories and add a second app for the rest, which spreads the risk if one of them has a bad month.

Before you move money between apps, it's worth knowing how cancelling and refunds work on each. The help section of this site collects those steps app by app, from renewal rules to data deletion.

Why is Character AI so bad now, according to critics?

"It used to be better" is a common feeling, and I want to be careful with it. The records on file don't show a dated change in quality, so I can't confirm the app got worse. What they do show is a set of things that can make it feel worse on a given day.

Slow mode is the first. At high load, the free plan's response speed drops, which can make a lively scene feel like it's wading through mud. Ads on the free plan add to that. Then there's voice.

Reviewer reports say a few voices land surprisingly well, while others sound like a bored audiobook robot: laggy, and with the emotion pitched wrong. If you've been hopping between characters, you may simply have landed on a weaker voice.

The last is checkout. One reviewer had a credit card and a debit card turned down again and again when trying to buy c.ai+, for three weeks straight, even though both cards went through fine on ten other sites. Support only suggested trying another card. If you tried to upgrade and got stuck, that report suggests you're not alone.

My view is that "so bad now" usually means "busier and more crowded now". Paying for c.ai+ fixes slow mode and ads. It doesn't fix memory slips or content rules.

How does this site decide whether an app is bad?

I don't call an app bad because it refuses something by design. A clear rule, stated openly, is fair to you even when it's a no. What does cost an app in my book is anything that surprises you: hidden limits, unclear billing, refunds that are harder than they look, or features that don't match their description.

By that standard, Character AI does well on honesty. The free plan says unlimited and means it. The content policy is plain. The weak points are memory reliability, voice consistency and a strict refund rule, and those show up clearly in its score.

If you want the details of how apps are weighed here, I explain the whole approach in how apps are checked on this site.

Is Character AI bad for your mental health?

I want to answer this one with care, and honestly. The records on file hold nothing about health effects, and I'm a library technician, not a clinician, so I won't make claims either way. What I can offer is plain, practical advice that applies to any chat app you enjoy.

Treat it like any hobby you love. Notice how you feel after a session, not just during it. If a chat leaves you calmer, great. If you find it crowding out sleep, friends or plans, that's a sign to set a time limit or take a few days off.

And if you're going through something heavy, a real person is the right first call, not an app.

One thing Character AI has in its favour: the content policy is strict and consistent, and its plans on file are flat subscriptions with no coin meter listed. For some people, that makes it a calmer place than apps built around pay-as-you-go features.

Is Character AI bad value for money?

Free, it's excellent value. Paid, it depends on why you're paying. Spending $9.99 a month on c.ai+ makes sense if slow mode and ads annoy you every day. It's poor value if you're hoping it changes the content rules, because it doesn't.

Two money points stand out. Plans keep renewing until you cancel, and Character AI won't refund a payment unless the law makes it. My habit: a calendar note a few days ahead of each renewal, so you choose before the charge. Bought it in the App Store or on Google Play? Then refund requests go to Apple or Google.

The content question is the one that trips up most would-be subscribers. If adult content is what you hoped to unlock, my explainer on whether Character AI will allow NSFW content covers the full answer, including what c.ai+ really adds.

So, is it bad? For free SFW roleplay, it's one of the best on file. For anything outside that lane, it's simply the wrong tool, and that's fine.

My advice is to judge it by what it promises, keep the free plan until it clearly isn't enough, and spend money only on the one upgrade that fixes your own biggest annoyance.

Common questions

Why is Character AI bad at remembering things?

Reviewer reports say recall of buried facts can be strong, but the AI sometimes invents plausible details with equal confidence and can lose a promise made ten messages earlier. Paid plans add 30 memory pins, from (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month, which let you fix the facts that matter most in a story.

Why is Character AI bad on the free plan sometimes?

The free plan is unlimited, but it shows ads and uses slow mode, a reduced response speed, when the service is busy. It also has limited daily features. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month removes ads and slow mode if that trade-off bothers you daily.

Is Character AI safe to use?

The records don't include a privacy audit or breach history for Character AI, so I can't give a full safety verdict. What is on file: the company is Character Technologies, Inc., the app is on web, iOS and Android, and the content policy allows no adult content. Read its privacy terms before sharing anything personal.

Is Character AI worse than other AI chat apps?

Not overall. Its free plan is more generous than most on file, with unlimited messaging for all users. It trails on memory reliability compared with what reviewers say about Nomi AI, and it allows no adult content, unlike SpicyChat or OurDream AI. Which is better depends on your main complaint.

Can I get my money back if I think Character AI is bad?

Usually not. Character AI's terms make payments non-refundable unless a law requires otherwise. Store purchases follow Apple's or Google's own refund process. The practical move is to cancel a few days ahead of the renewal date if you've decided the app isn't for you.

Why is Character AI bad at voices?

Reviewer reports are mixed. Some voices sound surprisingly good, others flat, and delays or off emotional tone happen. Voice calls are a listed feature, so it's worth trying a few characters' voices and keeping the ones that suit you.
