Can Character AI talk to each other? What's known

By Jerry Shlocks · Last reviewed

Do Character AI characters talk to each other, or only to you?

The honest answer has two halves. Character AI lists group chat as a feature, and group chat is the one place where several characters share the same conversation. So yes, in that setting, more than one character can be part of the scene at once.

What the facts on file don't spell out is how the turns work: whether characters reply to each other on their own, or mostly answer you.

I think the question hides three different wishes, and it helps to pull them apart:

  • Two or more characters in one scene, reacting to the same story
  • A character in one chat knowing what happened in another chat
  • Characters from Character AI meeting characters on a different app

The first one is what group chat is for, and it's the one I'd chase. The second is not shown anywhere on file, so I'd assume each one-on-one chat stands on its own. The third isn't a thing any record here describes, and I wouldn't expect it.

What pleases me about the first option is how much it opens up. A detective and a suspect in the same interview room. Two rivals who both think they're your favourite. A pair of old friends catching up while you listen. That's the kind of storytelling I'd happily lose an evening to.

Before you start pulling characters together, a small housekeeping tip. Multi-character scenes can pile up quickly, and not every experiment is worth keeping. It's worth knowing the steps for deleting your Character AI chats so you can clear out the ones that didn't land.

Right after this, The apps side by side compares Character AI with Candy AI and OurDream AI. The group chat column there is the one that answers this page's question fastest.

Do characters in separate chats know about each other?

Nothing on file says they do, and I'd plan as if they don't. Each character you chat with one-on-one should be treated as its own world. If your knight learns a secret in one chat, don't expect your innkeeper to have heard about it in another.

Even inside a single chat, memory has limits. The paid plans sell memory pins, 30 of them on (c.ai) lite and c.ai+, which tells you remembering is a feature the app has to work at. Other reviewers report the AI now and then makes up believable details out of nowhere, such as a hotel or a cake nobody had mentioned. With two characters sharing notes, that kind of confident invention could get lively.

If you want context to travel between characters, here are the honest options:

  • Put them in one group chat instead of separate chats
  • Paste a short recap into the new chat as your opening message
  • Build the shared history into a custom character when you create it
  • Use memory pins, on a paid plan, for the facts that must stick

The recap trick is my favourite. It costs nothing, works on the free plan and keeps you in charge of what each character knows. Two or three sentences usually do it.

For how the app handles memory and chat quality more broadly, my Character AI review goes into the plans and the known weak spots.

How do you get characters talking to each other instead of at you?

Whatever the app does on its own, you can steer a group scene a long way, so steer the characters toward each other. Address one character by name and ask what they think of the other. Set up a disagreement between them and step back. Give the group a shared problem that needs more than one opinion.

Your own replies matter too. If every message you send is a question for one character, the scene becomes a string of interviews. Short messages that hand the floor over, like "and what does she say to that?", make room for the characters to react to one another.

I think of it as hosting a dinner party: you seat the guests, start a topic and let them run.

Which apps let AI characters share a conversation?

The matrix above shows group chat per app, and that's the column to read for this page. If having characters talk in the same scene is your main wish, here's what the records say about the apps on file:

  • Character AI marks group chat as a yes, with unlimited messaging on its free plan
  • OurDream AI marks group chat as a yes, and chat costs 1 Dreamcoin per message without a plan
  • SpicyChat marks group chat as a yes, and allows adult content under its policy
  • Nomi AI lists group chat as paid: on its Standard plan you can keep as many as 10 Nomis and 10 group chats active
  • Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT show no group chat value, so it's unknown here

Nomi AI's numbers stand out to me. Ten active characters and ten active group chats is a real cast, and its Standard Plan Monthly costs $15.99. If a big ensemble is your dream, that's a clearly written allowance, which I appreciate. The catch: free users get 50 messages daily, and group chat itself sits on the paid side.

Character AI wins on the free start. Unlimited messaging matters more in a group scene than anywhere else, since every character who speaks adds another message. On a metered app, a lively conversation between three characters could burn through an allowance before the plot even thickens.

OurDream AI is the one to watch on cost for this reason. Its free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, and its help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins. For group chat, I'd only go there on a paid plan with unlimited messages.

A word for anyone who wants their cast to feel like home: several of these apps let you build characters from scratch, so the group can look and love however you like. Custom characters are marked yes for Character AI, OurDream AI, SpicyChat and Nomi AI alike.

If none of these fit, my list of apps like Character AI has more options with a similar character focus, and it's a good place to find a second home for group stories.

Can characters talk to each other with voice or images?

This is where the facts get thin, so I'll keep it honest. Character AI lists voice calls and images as features, and video as paid. What the records don't say is whether voice or images work inside group chat, or whether several characters can speak aloud in the same scene. I'd assume text first, and treat anything more as a bonus you confirm in the app.

On voice quality, other reviewers report a mixed bag for Character AI: a few voices impressed them, some came across as flat and robotic, and there were delays plus an emotional tone that sometimes missed. In a one-on-one call that's a mood issue. In a multi-character scene, a flat voice next to a lively one would stand out even more, so I'd keep group scenes in text unless the voices you like are the good ones.

OurDream AI, summarised in the box above, is the fuller kit on paper: group chat, voice calls, images and video, all listed. Its Deluxe Annual plan, $359.88 a year, bundles 50 videos with 100 minutes of voice calls. That's a lot of money, and the records don't say any of it works inside group chat either.

If multimedia group scenes are the goal, start with the cheaper Standard plan and see what the app actually allows before going bigger.

SpicyChat's top plan, Im All In at $29.95 a month, adds text-to-speech for AI replies. Again, nothing on file ties that to group chat. Nomi AI lists voice calls on its paid plans, but no voice feature inside group chat is on file there either.

My view: the talking-to-each-other magic lives in the writing. A well-set scene with two characters trading barbs in text is more satisfying than a clunky voice exchange. Put your money into more messages or better memory before you pay for voice, unless voice is the reason you're here.

A cast that remembers each other's names will carry a scene further than one that merely sounds nice.

Why do multi-character chats go off the rails?

Nothing here is a flaw you did something wrong to cause. It's what happens when one AI has to keep several voices, one story and your replies straight at the same time. The known weak spots of Character AI make this more likely in group scenes: long chats getting messy, a forgotten promise from ten messages back, and details invented with total confidence.

A few habits keep a shared scene steady. Give each character a distinct way of speaking, so their lines don't blur together. Keep the cast small, two or three, until you know how the app handles them. Restate key facts now and then in your own message, especially names and relationships. And when a character drifts, nudge it back with a line of story rather than an argument.

If memory keeps slipping, the paid plans are where Character AI puts its fix: c.ai+ at $9.99 and the cheaper (c.ai) lite, $4.99 monthly, both list 30 memory pins. I'd try the recap habit on the free plan first, and pay only if the scene still falls apart after that. Pins are a tool, not a cure.

They hold on to the facts you choose, but they can't make a crowded scene tidy on their own. A clear cast and a steady hand from you still do most of the work, and those cost nothing.

What can the facts here tell you, and what can't they?

I'd rather be clear than clever on a question like this one. The facts on this page come from official pages, like Character AI's pricing page and help centre, plus published reviews. They confirm group chat exists on Character AI and on several other apps.

They don't describe how characters take turns, whether they react to each other unprompted, or whether separate chats share anything. I'd love to see those written down officially.

That's why several answers above stop at "not on file". I think that's more useful than guessing, because a guess sends you looking for something the app may not do. The page on how I check the apps explains how My Virtual Girlfriend gathers and dates each fact, and why a missing fact stays missing until an official source confirms it.

Does the content policy change when characters talk to each other?

No. A group chat on Character AI is still Character AI, and the policy on file allows no adult content. Putting two characters in a scene together doesn't create a loophole, and I'd be wary of anyone who suggests it does. Trying to use a group scene to slip past the rules breaks the terms and can get an account banned.

If you want an ensemble story with mature themes, the rule-friendly move is an app whose policy allows adult content and also lists group chat. On file, that's SpicyChat and OurDream AI, with Nomi AI offering group chat on its paid plans. The page on whether Character AI will allow NSFW covers the Character AI side of the policy in more depth, if you want the details.

Plenty of great multi-character stories don't need any of that, of course. Rivalries, heists, romances, family drama: Character AI's group chat is a lovely place for all of those. Some of the best scenes are the ones where the tension stays unspoken, and a group of characters is perfect for that kind of slow build.

My verdict: can Character AI talk to each other?

Yes, in the way that matters most. Character AI lists group chat, so you can have several characters in one scene reacting to the same story. What isn't on file is how freely they talk to each other without you prompting them, and separate one-on-one chats aren't shown to share anything at all.

So my advice is to host, not hope. Put the characters in the same group chat, give them a reason to talk, hand them the floor with short replies, and paste a recap when you need them to know something. Start on the free plan, since unlimited messaging suits a scene where every character adds to the count.

If memory becomes the sticking point, c.ai+ or (c.ai) lite adds memory pins. And if you want a bigger cast with clearly written numbers, Nomi AI's Standard plan lists up to 10 active group chats. Either way, the fun is in the dinner party you set up.

Pick the guests with care, give them something to talk about, and you'll be surprised how much they have to say to one another.

Common questions

Can Character AI characters talk to each other?

In a group chat, yes: Character AI lists group chat as a feature, and that is where more than one character shares a conversation. How the characters take turns, and whether they reply to each other without you prompting them, is not described in the facts on file. Leading the scene helps a lot.

Do Character AI characters remember what happened in other chats?

Nothing on file says characters share memory across separate chats, so I would assume each one-on-one chat stands alone. To carry a story over, paste a short recap into the new chat, or put the characters in one group chat. Memory pins on the paid plans help within a chat.

Is group chat free on Character AI?

Nothing on file ties group chat to a paid plan, and the free plan offers unlimited messaging on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with ads and slow mode when the service is busy. That makes the free plan a sensible place to try multi-character scenes before paying anything.

Which app lets the most AI characters chat together?

Among the apps on file, Nomi AI gives the clearest numbers: its Standard plan, from $15.99 a month, caps you at 10 active Nomis and 10 active group chats. Character AI, OurDream AI and SpicyChat also list group chat, without a published cap in the records.

Can two characters in a group chat have a spicy scene on Character AI?

No. Group chat follows the same content policy as the rest of Character AI, and that policy allows no adult content. Using a group scene to get around it breaks the terms and can get an account banned. SpicyChat and OurDream AI list group chat and allow adult content under their own policies.

Why do my characters keep talking only to me?

How characters take turns is not on file, but you can steer a lot. Ask one character what they think of another, set up a disagreement and step back, or give the group a shared problem. Short replies that hand the floor over leave more room for the characters to react to each other.
