Free AI chat: 10 apps and what free really gives

That's the kind of free start I trust, since you know the limit before you hit it. Candy AI completes my top three, but be clear-eyed: its free start is a few messages and images, a taste before a cheap yearly plan.

If you want volume instead, Dippy AI and Perchance AI Character Chat both advertise unlimited free messages and images, with ads paying the bills. For designing your own character and seeing a few pictures first, I'd point you to Joi AI. Kindroid gives unlimited messages on a lighter model.

So completely free AI chat does exist, but each app pays for it somewhere: ads, a smaller model or shorter messages. If a looser content policy matters more to you than the price, my uncensored AI picks are the better place to start.

A stated daily allowance ranks higher with me than a vague "unlimited" nobody pins down, and a vague promise still beats a one-off handful of messages. Third: free images, because seeing a picture without paying is part of what people want from a free start.

After that come the smaller things: memory, voice, your own characters, and what the first paid plan costs if you ever want more. I don't claim the order is a pure formula. Each of these apps has sat on my phone at some point, free or paid, yet each entry's facts come from official pages as checked in September 2026, dated free-tier checks and what other review sites say.

If you want the whole thing free forever and don't mind a plain interface, Perchance AI Character Chat has no paid plan at all. If writing quality is the point, Kindroid. Here's what free really looks like. Text chat on the Default model has no cap, but ads show, a queue can form at busy hours, memory is 4K and replies stop at 180 tokens. Another outside source says free memory reaches roughly 30 messages back. There are no images or voice on free at all.

Outside reviews add that signed-out visitors get clean chat only, while a signed-in free account can switch on adult text.

If the queue or the ads start to grate, Get a Taste is the small step up: $5.95 a month, or $60 a year ($5.00 monthly), with no ads, no queue and a memory manager. Pictures only start at True Supporter for $19.95. Refunds are for exceptional cases once you've used the account, so I'd stay free as long as it works.

Quick math: 50 messages a day is a proper evening of chat, every evening. Compare that with the 5 messages in total that Candy AI's free start allows, covered in my Candy AI review, and you see why Nomi AI is the better plan for free use.

If you outgrow it, Standard costs $15.99 monthly or $99.99 for a year (about $8.33 a month) and opens up unlimited messages at 800 characters, voice calls, group chats and 40 image credits a day. I'd hold off until 50 a day really feels tight.

The catch: all payments are nonrefundable, even for lack of use, so I'd pay monthly first. Other reviewers report that pictures are picked from a ready-made set rather than made from your own prompt, so this isn't the app for pictures on demand. Chat quality is where it gets the most praise.

The statement reads NOMI.AI, so the app's name shows. Skip it if images are the whole point; stay if conversation is.

So why is it here? Because those few free images show you the builder at work, where you set ethnicity, looks, personality, voice and hobbies, and because the step after free is cheap if you commit. The 12-Month Plan costs €47.88, which is €3.99 a month, with texting uncapped and 100 tokens monthly. The 1-Month Plan is €13.99 and the 3-Month Plan €26.97.

Know the rules before you pay. Adult content is paid-only. Memory is reported to hold for roughly 10 to 20 messages. Outside the EU and UK, you have 24 hours after paying to ask for a refund, and using more than 20 tokens ends refund eligibility.

The fine print on those images matters. The 6 are lifetime, not monthly, and they're stored for 7 days, so save the ones you like. On top of that, a free account starts with 10 Neurons in its balance.

Other reviewers report that free-tier chat feels stiff and forgetful, while paid chat is warmer and holds context. That fits the shape of the offer: the free plan here is a shop window for the images, and good chat is what you pay for. Premium is $13.99 a month, with better chat models, improved memory and about 50 image generations a month.

The catch: failed image attempts still spend Neurons, and subscriptions are generally non-refundable once active. Charges show as joi.com, which names the app. Joi AI allows adult content, and if that's your main reason for looking, my NSFW AI chat rankings compare it with apps built around it. Skip Joi AI if long free chats are what you want.

I rank it below Nomi AI because the free limits are a promise rather than a number, and the terms say a complimentary membership is offered "currently", which tells me it could change. Still, as a free unlimited roleplay AI chat bot, it's the one I'd open first if ads don't bother you. Its character creator is the part reviews praise most, and chats are said to stay suggestive rather than graphic.

If the ads wear you down, Dippy Super Ads Free is $4.99 a month. The full Dippy Super plan is $12.99 a month or $119.99 a year. I'd skip the weekly plan at $6.99: over a month it's the dearest way to pay.

The catch I like least: no subscription cancel path is published, and there's no refund policy of its own beyond Apple's. Skip it if a clean exit matters to you. If a steady companion is what you're really after, my AI girlfriend rankings go deeper on memory and voice.

Its privacy policy goes further and states an intention to keep the AI side 100% free. There's no paid plan, so free is the whole product.

Why not higher, then? The unknowns. With no company named, there's nobody obvious to hold to account, and memory has limits: one comparison says it held up for 30 to 40 exchanges but lost a plot point about 60 messages back. Memory is editable, which helps. There are no voice calls.

What I like: group chats and your own characters, all free. That makes it a solid free AI chatbot maker, and the place I'd send anyone who wants a free custom AI chatbot, whether that's a detective, a rival or a free online vampire girl AI chatbot they'd rather write themselves. The base interface looks dated, but community forks improve it.

It sits lower because the free images are thin, one selfie every 2 hours, and the voice allowance is a lifetime pot rather than a daily one. But for text, it's a strong free start. Other reviewers report its writing quality as the best in a multi-app comparison, with characters that stay in character even when pushed, and a 7-day memory test passed without invented details. If that holds, it's the best writer on this page.

Now the money, because Kindroid has more price tags than anyone here. The Kindroid Subscription is $15.99 a month, $42.99 for 3 months or $159.99 a year, so $13.33 a month on the yearly plan. Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99 are add-ons whose contents aren't stated, so I'd ignore them.

Selfie credits are sold separately: 50 for $6.99 or 100 for $11.49. Audio credits cost $14.99 for 500,000.

The catch I'd warn a friend about: the 3-day free trial of the paid Ember model needs a payment method, and the subscription auto-renews. Refunds are case-by-case at Kindroid's sole discretion, with no refund by default. If you take the trial, set yourself a reminder. Charges show as KINDROID.

Replies can run long and descriptive, which suits story fans more than quick back-and-forth. If you want short, snappy free chat with ads instead of a lighter model, compare it with my SpicyChat review, whose free plan is unlimited text on its Default model. Watch the currency too: Candy AI prices in euros, the rest in dollars. And look for credits, coins or Neurons, since those are charged on top of a plan or instead of one. The top tiers are listed for completeness. For someone who mostly wants free chat, I don't think any of them is the smart first buy.

A daily allowance: Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day, and HammerAI 600 a day on its cloud models, with free, unlimited chat on local models in its desktop app. You wait until tomorrow, but you never hit a wall for good. This is my favourite kind, because it's honest.

Unlimited with ads: Dippy AI, Perchance AI Character Chat and SpicyChat. You pay with your attention. SpicyChat adds possible waiting lines, and its free replies top out at 180 tokens.

Unlimited text, paid media: VirtualGF lets you text its 20 preset characters free and without a limit, while images and voice need credits. Kindroid works in a similar way, with a lighter model and a trickle of selfies.

The preview: Candy AI's free start stops at 5 messages overall, and the count never refills, and OurDream AI gives 55 Dreamcoins at 1 per message. That's a look around, not free chat.

My rule for paying: only when the free plan stops you doing something you do every day. Then pay monthly first, because most refund rules here are strict. Candy AI gives 24 hours for non-EU/UK buyers, and HammerAI says all purchases are final.

• Ads. Dippy AI shows Google interstitial ads, and Perchance AI Character Chat and SpicyChat are ad-supported on free, so expect ads rather than a bill.
• Billing names, once you pay. Nomi AI shows NOMI.AI, Joi AI joi.com, Kindroid KINDROID, VirtualGF VirtualGF, Candy AI EverAI and SpicyChat NDAI.CHAT. OurDream AI shows DREAM STUDIO LLC AL.
• Leaving. Dippy AI only describes closing your account by email to [email protected], which I'd like to see made easier.

My advice: use an email address you keep for apps like these, share nothing you'd hate to see leaked, and read the privacy policy before you move from free to paid. The free stage is the cheapest moment you'll ever have to decide whether you trust an app, because walking away costs nothing.
