Where is Character AI from, and who runs it?

Where is Character AI from?

The United States. The company behind the app is Character Technologies, Inc., and its home country on file is the US. It is incorporated in Delaware, and the address given is in Menlo Park, California. As a fellow Californian, that detail makes me smile. It also makes this a US-registered business, even though its users are spread around the world.

One honest caveat about where those details come from. The Delaware and Menlo Park facts appear in the footers of Character AI's Terms of Service and About page, as captured by search engines, because those pages would not load as readable text for a direct look. I'm confident in the company name and the US base. I'd treat the exact street address as good but secondhand.

Here is the short version of what is on file:

  • Company: Character Technologies, Inc.
  • Country: United States
  • Incorporation: Delaware
  • Address: Menlo Park, California
  • Official site: character.ai, with apps for iOS and Android

My take: a named US company with a clear legal entity is a good sign. You know who you are dealing with, and who takes your money if you upgrade. When a company hides its legal name, I get nervous about refunds and data, and Character AI gives me no reason for that worry.

What the records do not hold is a launch date or founder names, so I won't give you either. If you see confident dates elsewhere, they did not come from the official pages this site relies on.

A US company also means US-style data handling, which I cover further down. If that part is what worries you, my guide on clearing your Character AI chat history shows what you can remove yourself. Just below, a table sets Character AI beside every other app covered here, so you can compare the basics at a glance.

App Free option Lowest monthly cost Allowed
Character AI Yes $4.99 Unconfirmed
Candy AI Yes €3.99 Mature chat, paid plans
OurDream AI Yes $9.99 Mature chat permitted
Nomi AI Yes $8.33 Mature chat permitted
GirlfriendGPT Yes $12.00 Mature chat, paid plans
SpicyChat Yes $5.00 Mature chat permitted

What does a US home base mean for your chats?

Mostly, it means the rules are written by a US company for a worldwide audience, with extra rights for some regions. The clearest example is chat data. The company says outright that it keeps certain data you share so it can train and improve its AI models. That is a plain yes, and I appreciate that it is not buried in fuzzy wording.

Where you live changes what you can do about it. People in the EEA and the UK can opt out of model training. Everyone else, going by the records, gets no such switch.

Does Character AI learn from conversations?

Yes, according to its own statement. Here is what the records say about training and the opt-out:

  • Some of what you share is kept by Character AI and used to train its models and make them better
  • Only people in the EEA and the UK get the opt-out
  • On the app, it sits under Settings > Data & Privacy
  • The web path is Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Model Improvement, where you untick "Improve the Model for Everyone"
  • Opting out does not end every use: search, recommendations and safety classifiers may still draw on your data

My take: the opt-out is real but narrow. It reaches only some countries, and even there it doesn't stop every use. If you are outside Europe and the UK, I would write every chat as if it might one day help train a model, because by the company's own words it can.

That doesn't make Character AI unusual among US apps, but it does make one habit worth building. Keep your real name, your address and your workplace out of roleplay. A persona gives you all the fun with far less of yourself on record.

Deleting your account is the other lever. Character AI calls account deletion permanent and says it cannot be reversed, but the help article gives no time window for when the removal completes. That is a small gap I'd like to see filled.

Where are the other companion apps from?

If a company's home base matters to you, it helps to see Character AI next to its rivals. The spread is wider than most people expect. Here is where the companies behind the other apps on this page are based:

  • Candy AI: EverAI Limited, a company in Malta
  • OurDream AI: Dream Studio USA, Inc., a US company
  • Nomi AI: Glimpse.ai, Inc., headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland
  • SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT: NextDay AI, based in Quebec, Canada, plus related companies registered in Delaware and in Cyprus

A couple of things jump out at me. First, SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT come from the same company group, NextDay AI. That is worth knowing if you are spreading your chats across apps for variety, because your chats on both end up with the same company group.

Second, Candy AI is the only one here with its main company in the EU, in Malta. For readers in Europe, that can make local consumer rules feel closer to home, though I would still read its refund terms before paying. Nomi AI and OurDream AI, like Character AI, are American.

My view on whether any of this should decide your pick: it matters, but less than people think. What really protects you is what each company publishes about training, deletion and refunds, not the flag on its office. A US company with a clear training statement is easier to trust than any app, anywhere, that says nothing at all.

Where the home base does change things is billing. The name on your card statement often follows the company, not the app. Candy AI charges show up as EverAI, SpicyChat's as NDAI.CHAT and Nomi AI's as NOMI.AI. For Character AI, the records hold no statement descriptor, so what your statement line will read remains unknown.

If you are weighing Character AI against these rivals for reasons beyond geography, my list of apps like Character AI worth a look compares them on content rules, pricing and features. OurDream AI, in the box below, is one of them, and a neat contrast: another US company, with group chat and voice calls, though without a subscription each message costs 1 Dreamcoin.

Does it matter that Character AI is American if you live elsewhere?

For day-to-day chatting, not much. Character AI is built for a worldwide audience, and its interface is offered in a long list of languages, 28 in total. They range from English, Spanish, French and German to Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Thai, Vietnamese, Turkish and Ukrainian, plus Simplified and Traditional Chinese. I like that a lot.

An app that speaks your language is far more comfortable than one that treats everyone outside the US as an afterthought.

Where your country shows up is in the money. (c.ai) lite, the cheapest paid plan, costs from $4.99 a month, and Character AI says its pricing varies by region. So the figure in your app store may not match the US price, and I'd trust the store price shown to you over any number you read online, including mine.

Payment options on the web are a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. None of the official pages mentions PayPal. If PayPal is your preferred way to keep charges discreet, that is a real limitation, and one I'd flag to a friend before they hit the upgrade button.

Paying through Apple or Google in the app is the other route, since those purchases go through the store's own payment methods. I'd pick whichever of those routes you already trust with your money.

Refunds also depend on where you bought. Character AI's rule is that money paid stays paid unless a law says otherwise. When a refund does apply, Apple or Google handle store purchases, and for web purchases you file a support request under "Payments and purchases".

The phrase "where required by law" is doing real work here: your local consumer rules may give you more than the default.

My overall read: the US base is mostly invisible unless you are in Europe or the UK, where you get that extra training opt-out, or you care about how you pay. For everyone else, the app works the same wherever you are.

What is not known about Character AI's background?

More than you might expect, at least from official sources. The records hold no launch date, no founder names and no statement about which AI model powers the chats. The free plan names its chat models, PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, but that tells you their names, not where they come from or how they were built.

A lot of articles online give a confident origin story, and I can't vouch for any of it. What I can vouch for is the legal entity, the country and the policies the company has published.

There is also no official public API. Only unofficial community wrappers exist, and the company does not support them. So if you are searching how to download characters from Character AI, no official export route is on file. The same goes for how to get a JSON file from Character AI.

That matters for the origin question in a practical way: a tool claiming to be "official Character AI" outside character.ai and the two app stores is not.

How do you know you have the real Character AI?

With a popular app, copycats are the real risk, and the company's identity is your best check. The official site is character.ai. The Google Play listing names the developer as Character.AI, or Character Technologies, Inc. If a listing shows a different developer name, I'd walk away, however similar the logo looks.

The official status page is another telling detail. It lives on Statuspage, and its shorter branded address was found to show a certificate error because of a broken redirect. It is a setup slip on the company's side, not a sign you are on a fake site.

My take on all of this: Character AI is easy to identify once you know the company name, and I'd use that name as your anchor whenever something looks off. A known US entity, a known domain and known app store listings leave little room for confusion.

If you're curious about my sources here, and why some details carry a secondhand label, how I check the apps explains the official sources I rely on and how disagreements between them are handled.

Does a US company mean US content rules?

Not exactly. Character AI's content rules are its own policy, not something set by the country it comes from. Two other US companies on this page, OurDream AI and Nomi AI, permit adult content in their policies. Character AI simply chose not to. Its policy does not allow adult content at any plan level, free or paid.

That choice is part of the company's identity. It pitches itself as interactive entertainment where people connect, learn and tell stories together, and that pitch is broad and mainstream by design. If you came here wondering whether its origin explains its strictness, the honest answer is no: it is a business choice. I respect that it is consistent about it.

A clear line, even a strict one, beats an app that changes its rules quietly and leaves you guessing mid-story.

Its stance gets a closer look in my Character AI NSFW guide, so you can decide whether it fits what you want from a companion.

So, should where it is from change your choice?

Here is where I land. Knowing that Character AI comes from a named US company is reassuring. You can see who operates it, which state it is registered in and who takes your money. That is better than most small companion apps manage.

What should shape your choice more is what that company does with your data and your content. Character AI states it trains on data you share, and only people in the EEA and the UK can opt out. It has a generous free plan with unlimited messaging. And it keeps a strict content policy that will not suit everyone.

If you are in Europe or the UK, untick "Improve the Model for Everyone" the day you sign up. If you are anywhere else, write as if your chats could be kept. And if the content rules are a deal-breaker, look at an app whose policy matches what you want before spending anything.

The friend version: Character AI is a legitimate American app with clear owners and a free start. Where it comes from is not the catch. The catch is the training default and the content line, so judge it on those.

Common questions

Where is Character AI from?

Character AI comes from the United States. The company behind it is Character Technologies, Inc., incorporated in Delaware, with an address in Menlo Park, California. Those details appear in the footers of its Terms of Service and About page. The official site is character.ai, and there are apps for iOS and Android.

Who is the company behind Character AI?

Character Technologies, Inc. is the legal entity named on the official pages and in the Google Play listing. Beyond that, the records hold no founder names or launch date, so I won't guess at either. The company name is the best way to spot the real app among copycats.

Is there a way to keep my Character AI chats out of model training?

Only in some places. Character AI states it keeps certain data to train and improve its models. If you live in the EEA or the UK, you can opt out under Settings > Data & Privacy in the app, or under Model Improvement in the web account settings. Even then, the company notes, that data can still be used for safety classifiers, recommendations and search.

Is Character AI available in other languages?

Yes. You can switch the interface to any of 28 languages, from Spanish, French and German to Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Thai and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Pricing for the (c.ai) lite plan varies by region, so the price shown in your app store is the one to trust.

Which AI model powers Character AI?

The free plan names PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr as its chat models. The records hold no statement about who built them or what they are based on. Character AI also has no official public API, and the community tools that connect to it are unofficial and unsupported.

Can I pay for Character AI with PayPal?

PayPal does not appear on any official page. Web checkout takes a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and iOS purchases go through Apple's own payment methods. c.ai+ renews automatically, and refunds happen only where the law demands them.

Can you get unbanned from Character AI?

The official pages on file describe no ban or appeal process, so I can't tell you how to get unbanned from Character AI or promise that it is possible. What is on file is a help centre that takes support requests, which is the only official place I would ask. Skip any site or tool that promises to restore an account for a fee or your login, since nothing from the company backs them.
