What is Sakura AI, and why do I call it the literary one?

I spent ten days in March 2026 with Sakura AI, and in my notes it's simply "the literary one". The replies were long and genuinely literary, actual prose with rhythm and restraint. I spent $0 and still came away with a folder of writing prompts.

Sakura AI, also known as Sakura.fm, is a character hub and roleplay app from Sakura AI, LLC, a US company, where you chat with community characters or build your own. It launched in 2023 and works in the browser as well as on iOS and Android.

What this Sakura AI review covers:

  • The free builder, card import and what the free plan limits
  • Why the writing is the reason to come, and the pacing the catch
  • The Show NSFW setting and how the rules feel in practice
  • Which paid plan makes sense, and the cancel rules that can catch you out
  • Where to go if you want pulp rather than prose

My take up front: this is the app I'd send a friend who reads more than they scroll. If your idea of a good evening is quick back-and-forth, it will feel slow. For a character hub with a different rhythm, my CrushOn AI review is a useful second opinion.

Is Sakura AI free, and does it have limited messages?

Yes, and yes. My ten days were entirely on the free plan: a free character builder, card import, no coins and no ads. You don't see that mix often enough, and it made the free start feel generous rather than grudging.

The catch is the daily cap. The Sakura+ page shows a Free column and asks "Keep reaching your daily message limit?", but the Sakura AI daily message limit itself is not published on any page on file. You find out when you hit it. There's a workaround: the same page says "Get Free Messages.

Apply in Discord", through a programme called Sakura Sage. So the Sakura AI Discord is your first stop before paying. No free trials of the paid plans are offered.

One change to note: I saw no coins in March 2026, while a secondary source now reports token-gated image generation in the character builder. Text chat is still the free core.

The Sakura AI at a glance box has platforms and billing in one place. For a free start that runs on coins instead of a daily cap, compare my OurDream AI review and its Dreamcoin costs.

How I check the apps

How good is the Sakura AI chat for writers?

This is the reason to come. The replies were long and genuinely literary, actual prose with rhythm and restraint, not the breathless one-liners I'm used to. I saved the best ones as writing prompts for my fanfic, taking notes like a thief in an archive. As someone who spends her days around catalogued books, I don't say "literary" lightly.

Outside reviews line up with that. Other reviewers report that characters keep their personality consistently over longer chats, and that writing quality sits above average for the category. That is the thing I value most in roleplay, and it's what makes the free plan worth your evenings.

Now the friction. Literary pacing is slow pacing. My id, raised on genre paperbacks and queer longing, occasionally wanted the pulp version, and the library taught me not to apologize for that. If you want a scene to move, Sakura takes the scenic route. That isn't a flaw for everyone, but it's the trade-off to expect.

Memory is the mixed part. A second outside source found that memory sometimes slipped during conversations. Sakura's answer is a better model on paid plans: Diamond adds the Dragonfruit Model with "better memory", and Infinite adds Infinite Memory. I wouldn't pay for memory alone until the free chat shows you whether it's a problem for your stories.

My view: the Sakura AI chat is, by a distance, what makes the app worth opening, and it rewards readers who enjoy the long way round. To compare its writing with other apps' strengths, my complete list of app reviews sets them side by side.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

Does Sakura AI have a filter?

Sort of, and I think it's set up well. Sakura AI allows adult content, but NSFW display is a user setting labelled "Show NSFW", so whether it appears is your call. I like apps that hand that choice to the person using them, and I like that nothing about the setting assumes who you are or who you want to write about.

The sign-up rule is self-declaration: the terms have you confirm you're older than 18, and they describe no ID check.

Moderation isn't perfect. Other reviewers report that NSFW moderation feels inconsistent, which usually means a scene can be stopped one moment and let through the next. Combine that with the slow literary pacing, and the pulp-minded side of me could see why some readers get restless. If steady rules matter to you, don't buy a year up front.

People also ask whether the Sakura AI app on Google Play is NSFW. The record lists an Android app and a Google Play notice on the buy page, but doesn't say whether the setting behaves differently in the store version, so I won't guess.

On Sakura AI art: Ultra-Immersive Images come only with the Infinite plan. One review calls the output stylised and uneven, and says nobody should pick the platform for it. There's no video generation, and voice call features aren't on record, though one review found the voice easy to understand yet not very human-sounding. I agree: this is a text app first.

For inclusivity, the builder lets you customize everything from appearance to a character's way of thinking, which I value. If a girlfriend-style companion matters more to you than a story partner, my AI girlfriend app rankings cover apps built for that.

Who Sakura AI suits

Great for

  • Readers who love long, literary replies with rhythm
  • Writers who want roleplay that doubles as prompts
  • People who want a free builder with card import, no ads
  • Anyone who wants adult content behind a setting they control

Skip if

  • Readers who want fast, punchy scenes
  • Anyone who needs to know the free message limit before signing up
  • People who mainly want images or video
  • Anyone hoping for a free trial of the paid plans

How does the price compare with other apps?

I paid nothing in March 2026, so the prices here are today's, checked 2026-09-23. The latest Sakura AI plans are Diamond ($19 monthly) and Infinite ($39 monthly), with yearly versions at $131.99 and $274.99. Yearly Diamond works out to $11 a month, and that $11 pricing page reads like an apology letter to the rest of the genre. There are no token packs on file, so the subscription is the whole bill.

Against the field, that's fair. Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, and its 12-Month Plan works out to €3.99 a month, but it meters extras with 100 tokens. OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99 with 1,000 dreamcoins. Nomi AI's Standard Plan Monthly is $15.99, or $99.99 for a full year.

So Sakura's monthly Diamond sits in the middle of the pack, and its yearly price is among the kinder ones. What you're paying for is different, though: no media focus, just unlimited writing and better memory.

My take: for text roleplay, yearly Diamond at $11 a month is one of the fairer deals on file.

Which plan is worth your money?

The free plan first. It's where I spent all ten days, and it's enough to find out whether you love the prose or find the pacing too slow. If the daily cap keeps interrupting you, try the Discord route for free messages before paying.

If you do pay, Diamond at $19 a month is the one I'd pick. It lifts the daily limit, adds the Dragonfruit Model for better memory, and adds Fusion Mode, which gives a variety of responses per message. Once you know you're staying, yearly Diamond at $131.99 is the smart buy.

Infinite at $39 a month carries a "SALE" label, but I'd skip it. Its extras are images and Infinite Memory, and the images are the part reviewers call hit-and-miss. The What each Sakura AI plan costs table sets all four prices side by side.

Sakura AI option Billed Cost Works out per month
Sakura+ Diamond monthly $19.00 $19.00
Sakura+ Infinite monthly $39.00 $39.00
Sakura+ Diamond (yearly) yearly $131.99 $11.00
Sakura+ Infinite (yearly) yearly $274.99 $22.92

The closest alternative I would suggest

That card goes to the official Sakura.fm site. Before you click, here's what Sakura doesn't do, so it doesn't surprise you later:

  • No video generation at all
  • No published number for the free daily message limit
  • No free trial of either paid plan
  • Images only on the priciest plan, Infinite
  • An interface in English only

I came for the prose in my ten free days, and I got it. But if your wish list includes pictures, video and a quick pace, Sakura is built for someone else.

That's where image-first apps come in. My Candy AI review covers an app that puts pictures and voice calls at the centre, starting at €13.99 for one month, with a free start of about 5 messages. It's the opposite trade: rich media, thin free chat.

I'd pick Sakura for words and Candy AI for visuals, and I wouldn't expect either to do the other's job. If you're torn, open a free account on both and spend a week with each. The one you reach for after a long shift is the one worth paying for, and your own habits are a better guide than any feature list, mine included.

The good and bad of Sakura AI

What went well

  • Long, literary replies with rhythm and restraint
  • A free character builder with card import, no coins and no ads in March 2026
  • Adult content allowed behind a Show NSFW setting you control
  • Diamond at $19 a month removes the daily message limit
  • Web, iOS and Android apps

What fell short

  • Literary pacing is slow pacing
  • The free daily message limit is not published anywhere
  • No video generation, and images only on Infinite at $39 a month
  • Subscription fees are non-refundable except when required by law

How do you cancel without paying twice?

I stayed free, so I had nothing to cancel. If you subscribe, read this part twice. Per the terms, each period rolls straight into a new one on identical conditions, unless either you or the company cancels. The buy page adds that Sakura+ is billed monthly and renews automatically.

You can cancel through your account settings page or by contacting the company. Paid through Apple's App Store or Google Play? Then the store is where you cancel. Two lines on the buy page deserve attention.

You need to cancel 24 hours or more before the current cycle ends. And deleting the app from your phone doesn't stop the subscription. I'm glad Sakura says that plainly, since it's the classic way people keep paying for an app they deleted weeks ago.

Refunds are the weak point. Subscription fees don't come back unless a law says they must, though some requests may be looked at case by case. In-app purchases follow the Apple or Google refund policy. My advice: don't count on money back, and start monthly rather than yearly.

No statement name is on record, so if discretion matters, watch how your first charge appears. For where each billing fact on this page comes from, see how I check the apps. The billing box sums up renewal, cancelling and refunds.

What happens to your chats and data?

Is Sakura AI safe? For your privacy, the policy is thin, and I wish it said more. All it promises is that personal data is held no longer than the policy's purposes need. There's no fixed deletion window in that, so you can't tell how long your chats stay around.

Whether your chats train Sakura's models is simply not stated. The closest line says personal data is used to run the service and make it better, which is broad. As someone who saved her favourite replies as writing prompts, I'd assume the service may keep and learn from yours too. Don't share anything you wouldn't want stored, and keep your real name out of your characters.

Is it a legit company?

Yes, from what the records show. Sakura AI, LLC is a US company, the app launched in 2023, and you can use it in a browser or on iOS and Android. The status on file is active, so if you're wondering whether Sakura AI is down, nothing on record says so, though I have no live reading to offer. The published terms say plainly how renewals and cancellations work, which counts in its favour.

The gaps are about detail, not trust: no statement name, no voice feature description and no published message limit. None of that makes it risky. It makes it harder to plan.

Healthy use in one line: enjoy the long scenes, and step away when the prose starts to feel like homework. If you want apps with adult settings and faster pacing, my NSFW AI chat app rankings are the place to compare.

Final word on Sakura AI

Final score

6.5/10

Okay

Sakura writes actual prose, with a free builder and honest pricing; the pacing is literary, so bring patience if you came for pulp.

Used hands-on with the free plan

  • Long, genuinely literary replies with rhythm and restraint; I saved the best as writing prompts.
  • Better memory arrives with the paid models, and reviewers saw it slip now and then.
  • A free character builder with card import.
  • Images only on the top plan and no video, so it is mostly text.
  • No coins and no ads, and the $11 pricing reads like an apology letter to the rest of the genre.
  • Data is shared with service providers for advertising and the policy has not been updated in a long while.
  • A named company with steady apps, if slow to update its paperwork.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: Sakura AI is worth it for readers and writers who want long, literary roleplay for free, and a skip if you want speed, pictures or a clear free allowance.

The plan I'd buy is yearly Diamond at $131.99, about $11 a month, once the free plan has proved itself and the daily cap starts cutting your chats short. My own ten days in March 2026 cost nothing, which is how I'd start anyone.

What bothers me most is the unpublished message cap, because you can't judge a free plan you can't measure. Close behind: fees are non-refundable, so go monthly first.

Skip it if your id, like mine occasionally, wants the pulp version and wants it now.

The closest alternative I would suggest

When a Sakura AI alternative fits better

Sakura shines at prose, so the best alternative depends on what you're missing. Here's how I'd match you up:

  • Nomi AI for a free plan with a published number: 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, no ads.
  • Candy AI if images and voice calls are central, from €13.99 for one month.
  • OurDream AI for image and video generation inside the paid plan, from $19.99 a month.
  • GirlfriendGPT for a free start with a daily top-up: 20 bonus messages, then another 10 each day through Daily Login.

If I had to pick one Sakura AI alternative for most readers, it would be Nomi AI, because its free plan tells you exactly what you get each day. That honesty is what Sakura is missing. It won't give you Sakura's literary voice, though, so if the prose is what you loved, you may be back.

For a big community character library with a snappier feel, read my SpicyChat review too. It's the closest match for readers who, like my id now and then, want the story to get moving. Whichever you pick, start free and let the writing earn a subscription.

Instead of Sakura AI

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

The three cards show how the field splits: Candy AI for pictures, OurDream AI for media on a coin budget, Nomi AI for a free plan with a clear daily number. None of them writes like Sakura did for me in March 2026.

My suggestion is to keep Sakura as your reading room and pick one of these for everything else. A free account in each costs nothing, and ten days is plenty to know which one you keep opening when the evening is yours.

Sakura AI questions, answered

What is Sakura AI?

Sakura AI, also called Sakura.fm, is a character hub and roleplay app from Sakura AI, LLC, a US company, launched in 2023. You chat with community characters or build your own, and it runs on the web, iOS and Android. In my ten free days in March 2026, its replies were long and genuinely literary.

Is Sakura AI free?

Yes. I used only the free plan for ten days in March 2026: a free character builder, card import, no coins and no ads. There is a daily message limit, but no number is published. Diamond at $19 a month removes the daily limit, and the Sakura+ page invites free users to apply for extra messages in Discord.

What is the Sakura AI daily message limit?

The exact number is not published. The Sakura+ page shows a Free column and mentions a daily message limit, but gives no figure anywhere official. Diamond and Infinite have no daily message limit, and the Sakura Sage programme on Discord can add free messages.

Does Sakura AI allow NSFW content?

Yes. Adult content is allowed, and display is a user setting labelled Show NSFW, so you decide whether it appears. The terms rely on self-declaration, with no ID check described. Outside reviews find the moderation inconsistent, so expect some variation from one scene to the next.

Is Sakura AI safe?

It is a legit app from Sakura AI, LLC, a US company. Privacy is the weaker side: the policy keeps personal data as long as necessary for its stated purposes, gives no deletion window, and does not say whether chats train models. Share nothing you would not want stored.

How do I cancel Sakura AI?

Cancel through your account settings page or by contacting the company; for App Store or Google Play purchases, cancel with the store. Do it at least 24 hours before the billing cycle ends, and remember that uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Fees are non-refundable except when required by law.
