Three picks up top for anyone in a hurry, and I stand by the logic behind each one. SpicyChat is the all-rounder: unlimited free text on its Default model, with ads and the odd queue, and a cheap tier that skips the line. Nomi AI is the pick for memory, and it also keeps a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day.
Candy AI looks better than anything else here and the voice lands hard, but its free start is tiny: 5 messages, full stop, so treat it as a peek rather than a trial. My take: read the free allowance before anything else. Every other app on My Virtual Girlfriend is in the cards below.

No app fits every filter you picked.
Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
The cards above hold every review on the site. Filter them down, then open the two or three that match what you want. My advice: compare the free allowance on each card before anything else, because an app with 5 free messages is a very different offer from one with 50 a day.
If a discreet statement matters to you, check the billing name too: Nomi AI bills as NOMI.AI, SpicyChat as NDAI.CHAT. If a daily free allowance matters most, my Nomi AI review covers its permanent free plan. Below is my short ranked list.

That ranked list is where I would start, but a rank is not a verdict for your case. The app at the top may be wrong for someone who only wants free chat, or for someone who wants no adult content at all, which is what Character AI offers. I like knowing that before I read a single review.
If none of those names clicked, the quiz below is for exactly this moment. It helps you narrow things down by what you actually want, so you can skip the ten reviews that don't fit and read the two that do.
Next is the comparison table, one row per app. I would sort it by price, then read across to the free column. What jumps out to me: monthly prices look close, but the yearly plans are where the gaps open. Nomi AI's Standard Plan Yearly costs $99.99, so $8.33 a month, against $15.99 month to month.
Candy AI's 12-Month Plan is €47.88, or €3.99 a month. My rule: if you're fairly sure you'll stay, the yearly price is the smart buy. If you're not sure, pay one month first and switch later.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
A table shows prices, not people, and that's where the numbers below come in. They describe the AI companion market as a whole rather than any single app, and each one names its source. I include them for context, not as a sales pitch.
What I take from them is simple: you are far from the only person curious about these apps, so there's nothing odd about comparing them properly. Read the stats, then come back to the reviews for the part that touches your wallet: the free start, the renewal and the refund rule.

Prices and free tiers shift a lot here, and not always in your favour. OurDream AI shows it well: other reviewers report that a free tier they looked at in 2025 had shrunk a lot by their 2026 revisit. That is why every review here carries a date, and why I'd rather you hear about changes by email than discover them at checkout.
The signup below sends price and deal changes plus newly added apps. It asks for one thing, your email address. If you'd rather not, fine by me: the reviews stay open to everyone.
Below is the long version: how these reviews are put together, what the numbers on each card mean, and what a review can't tell you. I keep it folded because most people don't need all of it. Open it if you're about to pay, or if something on a card surprised you.
My favourite part is the section on which plan to start with, because that's where most money gets wasted in this category. In a hurry? Skip to the questions at the very bottom, which cover free plans, refunds and billing names in a few lines each.
How these reviews work
Where my own use ends and the fine print begins
I'm Jerry Shlocks, and every app reviewed on My Virtual Girlfriend has been on my own phone at some point between 2023 and 2026: some on a paid plan, more on the free plan only, a few for months. Each review tells that story in my words, with its dates. Next to it sits the fine print, read closely and checked in September 2026: the price on the official pricing page, the free allowance the app states, the renewal and cancel rules from its terms, the refund policy and, where it is known, the name that shows up on a bank statement.
Where a dated free-tier check exists, the review says so and gives the date. The Candy AI check from 2026-09-22, for example, showed a free account getting 3-5 messages, the same number of images, and no video. Where reviewers elsewhere have reported something, such as memory slips or image errors, the review passes it on as their report and says what I make of it.
Why keep the two apart? Because what an app did for me back then may not match what it sells today. A price is a price for everyone, and a refund rule reads the same to everyone who signs up.
My opinion is on every page: which plan I would buy, which rule I find mean, and who I would tell to walk away.
What goes into every review
Each review follows the same order, so two apps are easy to hold side by side. I built it around the questions people ask before they pay, not around the app's own marketing. Here is what every review covers:
- The free start: exactly what the free plan allows, in the app's own numbers, such as 50 messages a day on Nomi AI or 100 message credits a month on CrushOn AI.
- The real cost: every plan and price as recorded, plus what tokens, coins or credits buy on top.
- Getting out: the cancel path, when access ends and the refund rule, quoted from the app's policy.
- Discretion: the billing name on your statement, where the app has published one.
- Content level: what the app allows, anywhere between no adult content and adult chat only for paying users, stated as a plain policy fact.
I also note whether you can build your own character. I care about this more than most sites seem to. An app that lets you shape the character, the look and the personality doesn't assume who is typing, and I like that.
After the facts comes my verdict: who the app suits, which plan I think is the smart buy, and the one catch you should know before paying. Every app has one. If you want to see the whole order in one place, my CrushOn AI review walks through a credits-based app from the free start to the refund rule.
What the numbers on a card mean
The cards pack a lot into a small space, so here is how I would read them.
Each card carries my score out of 10, from my own time with the app plus the facts on its official pages today. It is my opinion in a number, and the review behind it tells you why. For the full method, see how I check and score each app.
The free allowance is the app's own number, and the units differ a lot. Nomi AI counts 50 messages a day. Candy AI gives 5 messages in total. CrushOn AI counts 100 message credits a month. Read the unit, not only the number.
The lowest price is usually a yearly plan shown as a monthly figure. Nomi AI's $8.33 a month is really $99.99 paid upfront for the year. Candy AI's €3.99 a month is €47.88 upfront. Neither is wrong, but I want you to know what leaves your account on day one.
Currencies differ too. Candy AI prices in euros, most others in US dollars, so compare with that in mind. And "unlimited" needs its small print: SpicyChat's free plan offers unlimited text chat, but with ads and possible waiting lines, as my SpicyChat review explains.
Finally, the in-app currencies. Dreamcoins on OurDream AI, Moments on Secrets AI and Neurons on Joi AI are separate from the subscription. On Secrets AI, for instance, Moments purchases are final. Whenever an app has its own coin, the review says what it buys, and I would read that line twice.
What a review here can't tell you
I'd rather be clear about the limits than pretend there are none. A review can tell you how a conversation felt to me, on the plan I had and at the time I had it, but not whether a character's personality will click with you, or whether the memory holds up the same way today. Where reviewers elsewhere have written about those things, the review passes their view on, but it is their view, not a measurement.
It also can't promise a price will stay put. Everything is dated, and I'd check the app's own pricing page before you pay.
My honest advice: the best judge of chat quality is the free tier, used by you. Most apps here have one, from 50 messages a day on Nomi AI to unlimited text chat with ads on SpicyChat's free plan. Use the review to decide which free tier deserves an evening, then let your own impression make the final call.
The catch, app by app
Every app has a catch, and I think you should hear it before you pay, calmly and with a way around it. A few examples from the reviews:
Candy AI gives only 5 free messages in total, and outside the EU and UK the refund window is 24 hours after payment. If you buy, decide fast.
Nomi AI states that all payments are nonrefundable, with no refunds for lack of usage or dissatisfaction. The generous free plan of 50 messages a day is the way around it: use it fully before you subscribe.
Joi AI gives 6 free image generations for life, not per month, and they are stored for 7 days. Save anything you want to keep.
SpicyChat and GirlfriendGPT belong to the same company, NextDay AI. That's not a problem in itself, but it's worth knowing if you're comparing them as rivals.
CrushOn AI is cheap at $5.99 a month for Standard, but other reviewers report a Trustpilot rating around 1.8-2 out of 5, with complaints about double charging and unresponsive support. I'd start on the free 100 message credits and watch your statement.
For a full example of how a catch is weighed, my Joi AI review sets its Neurons meter against what the plan includes.
Which plan to start with, and when to pay
My rule is simple, and nearly every review points the same way: free first, one month second, a year only once you are sure.
Start on the free plan wherever there is one. Most apps here have one, and it tells you more than any review. On SpicyChat, free users can text the Default model without a cap, in exchange for ads and the occasional queue. Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day. That is plenty to form an opinion.
When you do pay, pay monthly first. The cheapest plans are often enough: SpicyChat's Get a Taste is $5.95 a month and removes the ads, and CrushOn AI's Standard is $5.99 a month for 2,000 message credits. I would not jump to a top tier like SpicyChat's Im All In at $29.95 a month until you know you want what it adds.
The yearly plan is the smart buy only after a month or two. Secrets AI's Premium yearly costs $109.99, or $9.17 a month, against $19.99 month to month. That's a real saving, but it's paid upfront, and on most apps the unused part is not refunded.
So I treat yearly as a reward for certainty, never as a way to try an app cheaply.
Five questions to ask before you pay
These are the questions every review on My Virtual Girlfriend tries to answer, and the ones I would ask about any app, even one I haven't reviewed yet.
What does free really mean? "Free" can mean 50 messages a day, like Nomi AI, or, like GirlfriendGPT, 20 bonus messages to start and a daily 10 from Daily Login. Find the unit and the reset.
What will I actually pay each month? Look past the subscription to the coins. OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99 with 1,000 dreamcoins every month, so the real question is what those coins buy.
What shows up on my statement? Some billing names are neutral, like EverAI for Candy AI or S LABS INC. for Secrets AI. If you want privacy at home, read this line first.
How do I get out? Cancel paths differ. Candy AI's terms point to Settings, then Unsubscribe, inside your account, while SpicyChat sends you through Manage Subscription to the payment platform.
What content does it allow? Candy AI keeps adult content to paid plans. Character AI allows none. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are signing up for.
If you want to see all five answered for one app, my Candy AI review covers its free start, its EverAI billing name and its 24-hour refund rule in one place.
Why and when a review gets updated
A review is only as good as its date, so every one here carries the date its facts were last checked. When that date is old, I'd treat the prices as a guide, not a promise.
Reviews change for three reasons. The first is price. Apps adjust plans, rename tiers and run sales. Character AI's pricing page, for example, shows c.ai+ Annual as $119.88 next to $94.99 per year, with "save 21%", and a discount like that can change. When the recorded price changes, the review changes with it.
The second is the free tier. Free plans are the part apps trim first, and it is the part readers care most about. If a free allowance shrinks, the review says so plainly, because a verdict built on a generous free start stops being fair the moment that start disappears.
The third is policy. A new refund rule, a new cancel path or a different billing name can turn a good pick into one I'd hesitate on. Those changes go into the billing note and, where they matter, into my verdict.
What does not change a review is marketing. A new slogan or a redesigned homepage is not news for your wallet. For a free tier worth re-reading before you sign up, see my OurDream AI review, where the free start rests on 55 Dreamcoins at 1 Dreamcoin per message.
How to read a review before you pay
Here is the order I'd read any review in, and it takes a few minutes, not an evening.
Start with the free-tier part. If the free start is tiny, like Candy AI's 5 messages in total, you know you're deciding almost blind. Then read the billing note: the cancel path, the refund rule and the statement name. If any of those bothers you, stop there.
After that, read my verdict and the catch. Only then look at the price table and pick a plan, starting with the smallest one that gives you what you want.
One last habit I'd recommend: read the date on the review. If it's old, open the app's own pricing page before you pay, because the prices here are only as fresh as that date.
That's the long version. If a question is still nagging you, the answers below cover the ones people ask most about this page: whether the reviews are paid for, which app has the best free start, and what to do about refunds and billing names. They are short and factual, with the numbers from the reviews themselves.
My one piece of advice before you read them: whatever app you pick, use its free tier before you spend a cent. Almost every review on My Virtual Girlfriend ends with that advice for a reason.
Common questions
Are these AI companion app reviews based on hands-on use?
Yes. Every app reviewed here has been on my own phone, some on a paid plan and more on the free plan only, at different times between 2023 and 2026, and each review tells that story with its dates. Prices, plans and policies come from the app's own pricing page, terms and refund policy as checked in September 2026, plus dated free-tier checks such as the Candy AI check from 2026-09-22. Outside reports are labelled as such.
Which AI companion app has the best free plan?
It depends on what you count. Nomi AI has a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, with no ads. SpicyChat's free plan offers unlimited text chat on its Default model, with ads and possible waiting lines, but no images or voice.
Character AI also offers free unlimited messaging, but it allows no adult content. My pick for a first try is whichever of those matches the content you want.
Can I get a refund if I don't like an app?
Often not, which is why I push free tiers so hard. Nomi AI states that all payments are nonrefundable. Candy AI allows a refund request within 24 hours of payment for users outside the EU and UK. OurDream AI offers a 14-day Quality Guarantee, handled case by case.
DreamGen is the friendliest here: it offers prorated refunds. Read the refund rule in the review before you pay.
What will the charge look like on my bank statement?
Each review gives the billing name where the app has one on record. A few examples: EverAI for Candy AI, NOMI.AI for Nomi AI, S LABS INC. for Secrets AI, NDAI.CHAT for SpicyChat and CRUSHON SUB for CrushOn AI. If a neutral name matters to you, compare this line before anything else.
Do AI companion apps charge extra on top of the subscription?
Many do, through their own coins or credits. OurDream AI uses Dreamcoins, Secrets AI uses Moments and Joi AI uses Neurons. On Secrets AI, Premium includes 8,000 Moments a month, and Moments purchases are final. Each review says what the coins buy, so you can work out the real monthly cost before you commit.
Which app should I start with if I want adult content?
The quick pick for that is Nomi AI, which allows adult content and keeps a free plan of 50 messages a day, so you can see whether you like it before paying. Some apps only allow it on paid plans, such as Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT, and Character AI does not allow it at all. Check the content level in each review before you sign up.
