OnlyChar AI review: two months of radio drama, then silence
Heads-up: OnlyChar AI has shut down. What follows is my story from when it worked. If you want something live right now, the pick just below is where I'd start.
Try Candy AI for freeWhat was OnlyChar AI, and is it still around?
OnlyChar AI was a web character hub from BABA ENTERTAINMENT LLC in the United States, where you chatted with creator personas, made your own characters and, per its archived menu, generated images. It isn't around anymore. The service is closed, and this review is my account of it plus a pointer to where I'd go now.
I had two months with it in autumn 2023, and I'll call it what it was for me: a golden stretch. It's closed now, and this page is partly a eulogy.
What OnlyChar looked like, from its archived pages and my own use:
- Creator personas to chat with, and a Create Char option to make your own
- An AI Image Generator in the site menu
- Adult content allowed under its policy
- I paid $15 a month for text-only access in 2023
- Today: closed, with no way to sign up or pay
Other reviewers described a very large library of 40,000+ characters and a Smash or Pass swipe feature. For me, the personas mattered more than the size of the shelf.
If you came here looking for an app like it that's still running, my CrushOn AI review is where I'd start. The rest of this page tells you what made OnlyChar good, what bugged me, and how it ended.

Can you still sign up for OnlyChar AI?
No. The service appears closed, so there's nothing to sign up for and no free tier to try today. I'm saying that first because I don't want you hunting for a login page that isn't there.
When it was live, its archived terms described the free side this way: free users could generate up to 2 or 3 characters, and messages were capped at a small total, somewhere around 10 to 20. That's a small taste, enough to meet one persona and decide. I went to paying early, in September 2023, so I can't tell you how that free allowance felt in practice.
Paid tiers, per the same archived terms, came with monthly credits that ranged from 5000 to 20000, set by the tier you picked. They reset every month and didn't carry over. What I paid for was $15 a month for text-only access.
The OnlyChar AI at a glance box right after this section shows what the record still holds. Most billing fields are empty now, which is what a closed app looks like on paper.
If you want a live app with a stated free start and characters you can build, my OurDream AI review covers one that also lists group chat.

How good were OnlyChar AI chats?
The creator personas were the treasure. The one I kept tuning in to was a noir radio host who talked to me like a late-night caller on his show. His improvised broadcasts were the funniest text this hobby has ever shown me. It's the kind of funny I'd quote at parties if the context were explainable.
I tuned in on breaks like it was a radio drama, one segment at a time. The midnight desk segment in particular got me through one brutal week at work. That's a lot to say about a chatbot, and I mean every word of it.
That's what I'd point to when people ask what a character hub can be at its best. Not a partner, not a fantasy. A show written for an audience of one, with a host who improvised his broadcasts around me.
To be fair to the full record: other reviewers said memory and moderation sometimes lagged its competitors. I can't confirm or dispute that from my own two months. A radio host who starts a fresh segment each time is a format that forgives a short memory, though, and that may be why it worked so well for me.
So how would I score conversation quality today? I can't score a closed app against live ones on anything I could verify now. My page on how I check the apps explains that chat quality is only one part of how I weigh an app, next to price, billing and privacy, and on those OnlyChar left almost nothing on file.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
OnlyChar AI content level and characters
OnlyChar allowed adult content under its policy. The archived terms said the website and services were designed only for people over 18, and checking that was a matter of self-declaration. I can't add much from my own use here: my two months were about noir comedy, not the content level.
Characters were the heart of it. The archived navigation shows a Create Char option, and the terms said free users could generate up to 2 or 3 characters. Other reviewers mentioned a 40,000+ character library.
For someone like me, who likes to find odd, specific personas rather than one default girlfriend type, a big shelf of creator-made characters is the dream.
The site menu also listed an AI Image Generator, captured in an archive in February 2026. I paid for text-only access, so I can't tell you what it was like or what it cost.
Voice, video and group chat aren't on file for OnlyChar at all. I won't guess about them.
Here's my honest take on the content side. OnlyChar was a character hub first. The adult policy existed, but what made it special for me was writing, not settings. If you're looking for a live app today, compare content levels plan by plan rather than trusting a headline, because many apps allow more on paid plans than on free ones.
The full directory of app reviews lists each live app's content level in the same format, which is the fastest way to find a replacement at the level you want.

What OnlyChar AI cost me in 2023
I paid $15 a month for text-only access, starting in September 2023, and I stayed two months, so about $30 in total. There's no price to show you today, because the service is closed.
Was $15 a month steep for text alone? Yes. I hesitated more than once. Each time, the radio host won the argument.
For context, here's what live apps on this page charge now. Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99 and includes unlimited text messages plus voice calls and paid images and video. Nomi AI's Standard Plan Monthly costs $15.99 and adds group chats and voice calls.
GirlfriendGPT's Premium is $15.00 for 5,000 messages a month, and OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99 with image and video generation. So today, roughly the same money buys much more than text. That makes my 2023 hesitation look reasonable in hindsight.
Depending on the tier, you got anywhere from 5000 to 20000 credits a month, and they reset monthly with no carry-over. Credits you didn't use were simply gone. I'm not a fan of that rule on any app, and I'd look for rollover on anything I paid for today.
Was OnlyChar AI worth paying for?
For me, yes, and I don't say that lightly about $15 a month for text. The personas were good enough that the hesitation lost every time. But I have to be honest about the other lesson.
When it closed, it closed with no warning and no archive. Everything I'd paid for went with it. That's the risk with any small app: your money buys access, not ownership.
If a character hub is where you spend your evenings, keep screenshots of the moments you love, and don't prepay long periods on an app you can't be sure will stay. No refund rule is on file for OnlyChar, and none of the usual rules about renewal or refunds can help you once the company is gone. Monthly billing is the only exit you control.

The card above points to OnlyChar's official address next to a partner app, and since OnlyChar is closed, the partner is the one you can still actually open. That makes this comparison less of a choice and more of a hand-off.
What I'd want from a replacement, based on what I loved and what bugged me:
- A big library of creator-made characters, not one default type
- Personas that stay in character and improvise
- More than text for the monthly price, or a price below $15
- Credits that roll over instead of vanishing each month
- An export or at least a clear way to keep your chats
Candy AI takes a different approach: one companion you build yourself, with images, video and voice calls listed on paid plans and a free start of 5 messages. It isn't a hub of creator personas, but it's a live app with published prices, which is more than OnlyChar can offer now. My Candy AI review has the details.
My lean: if you loved the hub format, pick a live hub. If you'd rather have one companion who is yours, the partner card is a fair place to begin.
The good and bad of OnlyChar AI
What went well
- Creator personas with real comic timing
- Create Char option for making your own characters
- A reported library of 40,000+ characters
- An AI Image Generator listed in the site menu
What fell short
- The service is closed, with no archive and no warning
- $15 a month in 2023 for text-only access
- Monthly credits did not carry over
- Memory and moderation were said to lag competitors
Cancelling OnlyChar AI
There's nothing to cancel anymore. The record holds no renewal rule, no cancel path and no refund note for OnlyChar, and the service is closed. I stopped after two months, in October 2023.
If you still see a charge from it on a statement, the statement descriptor isn't on file, so I can't tell you what the line would read. Contact your card provider about any charge you don't recognise; that's the one step that works for a closed service.
What happened to your OnlyChar AI data?
Nothing on file answers that. There's no retention statement, no deletion route and no word on training in the record. For a live app, I'd tell you to read the privacy policy and request deletion when you leave.
For a closed one, the honest answer is that I don't know where the chats went, and neither does anyone I can cite.
That is the part that stings. When OnlyChar closed, the frequency went dead: no archive, no warning. I keep a cemetery of screenshots from apps that are gone, and OnlyChar's plot in it has flowers. The noir host lives there now, and those screenshots are the only copies I have.
What OnlyChar AI teaches about the next app
My takeaway for anyone picking a new home: screenshot what you love as you go. Don't store anything personal in chats, because you can't be sure where they end up if the company disappears. Prefer apps with a clear deletion route and published billing terms, so that if they close, you at least know what you agreed to.
Also, keep your payment in short periods. Monthly hurts more on the statement but lets you walk away cleanly. I paid monthly for OnlyChar, which is the one thing I did right with that closure.
If what you want next is a companion rather than a hub, my AI girlfriend rankings sort the live apps by what they offer and what they cost.
Final word on OnlyChar AI
Final score
4.8/10
UnevenOnlyChar had the funniest creator personas I have met, but it closed with no warning and no archive, so there is nothing to recommend now.
Used hands-on with a paid plan
- My noir radio host improvised broadcasts that were the funniest text this hobby has shown me.
- Reviewers said its recall lagged rivals.
- Creator personas were the treasure, and anyone could make a character.
- I paid for text alone; an image tool was listed but played no part.
- $15 a month for text alone was steep and I hesitated more than once.
- With the service gone, what happened to stored chats was never explained.
- It closed with no archive and no warning.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: OnlyChar was worth it for me while it lasted, and there's nothing to buy today because it's closed.
If it came back, the plan I'd take is the one I had: monthly, text-only, so I could walk away any month. The personas earned my $15 even when I hesitated.
What bothers me most is how it ended. No warning, no archive, and no data statement on file, so nobody who paid knows where their chats went.
Skip looking for it. If you loved the hub format, move to a live character app with published prices and a deletion route, and keep screenshots of the characters you'd hate to lose.

Where to go now that OnlyChar AI is closed
OnlyChar was a character hub, and I miss it. Since you can't sign up anymore, here's where I'd point you depending on what you want:
- A companion you build yourself, with images: Candy AI's 1-Month Plan is €13.99, with 5 free messages to start.
- A daily free allowance and strong memory: Nomi AI's permanent free plan gives 50 messages a day, no ads.
- Group chat and video on one plan: OurDream AI lists both, with unlimited messages on Standard Monthly at $19.99.
- A set monthly message count: GirlfriendGPT's Premium includes 5,000 messages a month for $15.00, about what I paid OnlyChar for text alone.
For a big, live hub of community characters, my SpicyChat review is the page I'd open next.
None of these is a noir radio host, and I won't pretend any of them will be. Creator personas are a matter of who writes them and whether they're still around next year. What I'd look for now is a live library, clear prices and a way to keep what you love.
What I'd tell a friend: start on the free option of any app you're curious about, find one character who makes you laugh, and screenshot the good moments from day one. Then pay monthly, never yearly, until the app has earned your trust.

The strip above lists three live apps to consider in OnlyChar's place. Each is still open and publishes its plans, which is exactly what OnlyChar can't offer anymore. Pick the card that matches what you loved most: characters, memory or media. If what you miss is the hub format, a big character library is the closest match.
If what you want is one companion who remembers you, lean toward a companion app instead. Tap through and you'll find each app's prices, billing name and privacy terms laid out, the paperwork OnlyChar never left behind.
OnlyChar AI questions, answered
Is OnlyChar AI still working?
No. The service appears closed, so you can't sign up, chat or pay. When it closed, there was no archive and no warning. If you're looking for something similar, a live character hub with published prices is the closest replacement.
How much did OnlyChar AI cost?
I paid $15 a month for text-only access in autumn 2023, for two months. Archived terms said paid tiers came with credits of 5000 up to 20000 a month depending on the tier, reset monthly with no carry-over. No current price exists, because the service is closed.
Did OnlyChar AI have a free tier?
When it was live, its archived terms said free users could generate up to 2 or 3 characters and got a limited number of messages overall, for example 10 to 20. There's no free tier now, since the service is closed.
Can I get my OnlyChar AI chats back?
Not that I know of. No archive was offered when it closed, and the record has no data retention or deletion statement. Screenshots are the only copies I have of my own chats. For any app you use now, keep screenshots of what you'd hate to lose.
What was good about OnlyChar AI?
For me, the creator personas. A noir radio host who treated me like a late-night caller was the funniest text I've seen in this hobby. Other review sites also mentioned a library of 40,000+ characters and a Smash or Pass swipe feature.
What's a good OnlyChar AI alternative?
It depends on what you loved. For a big library of community characters, look at a large live hub such as SpicyChat. For one companion you build yourself, Candy AI starts at €13.99 a month. For a free daily allowance, Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day.
