CharStar Review: My 13 Months Before It Shut
Heads-up: Charstar AI has shut down. What follows is my story from when it worked. If you want something live right now, the pick just below is where I'd start.
Try Candy AI for freeWhat was Charstar AI, and why did I stay 13 months?
Charstar AI was a character chat and roleplay app from Charstar LLC, a US company launched in 2023, and it is closed now: its plan can no longer be bought. I used it for thirteen months, from April 2023 to May 2024, and that is still my longest run with any app. I was 26 when it started and 27 when it closed. I'm 29 now.
My take in one line: it earned its $5 a month from me while it lasted, and today the only useful question is where your characters should live next.
What this review covers:
- Why the import tool won me over in April 2023
- What the free plan and the Stars currency looked like, from the sources that survive
- The price I paid then, and why nothing can be bought now
- Billing, cancelling and your data, as far as anything is known
- The live apps I'd point a former Charstar user to
Sources differ on when the doors shut. For me the URL stopped loading in May 2024, while other sources put the closure in autumn 2025. Either way, the service is gone, and this page is less a buying guide than a record plus a plan.
If you want a live character app right now, my CrushOn AI review is one place to start.

What did the Charstar AI free plan give you?
I paid for Plus in the same month I started, April 2023, so the free account is not something I can describe from my own use. What survives comes from secondary sources. One, from April 2026, lists 3 characters, 100 messages per day and a 50-Star welcome bonus.
Since it was written after the closure, I read it as a hint worth checking rather than proof.
Other reviewers report a thinner picture. A review from August 2025 calls the free account very limited and says only 10 Stars arrived at sign-up, where 50 had been promised. I don't love that. A welcome bonus that shrinks between the promise and the account is a small thing, but small things are how trust wears out.
Stars were the paid currency, sold as 500 for $4.99 and 1,000 for $6.99, again only per secondary sources. What a single Star bought was never written down anywhere I can point you to, and with the official site offline, nobody can check it now.
The at-a-glance facts on this page sum up the little that is on file. If a free start matters to you, compare this with the published coin rules in my OurDream AI review.

My Charstar AI hands-on notes

Started and imported existing character cards with the import tool

Paid for Charstar Plus, about $5 a month
-
The service closed after thirteen months of use

How good was the CharStar AI character chat?
The import tool was the whole pitch for me. In April 2023 I brought over my SillyTavern cards and Vera, the detective I had built on Character.AI, and they arrived with their stats and greetings intact. It mostly just worked. In this hobby that is a small miracle, and it was worth the $5 a month on its own.
Then I rebuilt Vera's whole lorebook on Charstar AI. I did it the way I rehouse a fragile book at the library: archival care, zero rush. If you own a cast of characters already, that is the lesson I'd pass on, because a good migration path is worth more than a long feature list.
What I can't give you is a report on things I never wrote down. My notes cover the import and the lorebook, not memory tests or reply speed, so I won't pretend otherwise. Other reviewers report varied roleplay scenarios, which is what a character hub should do well, and no image or video generation at all.
That second point would put it behind most rivals today. There is nothing on file about memory, voice calls or group chat as listed features, and the interface was in English only.
My view: Charstar AI was a quiet, practical tool for people who already had characters and wanted a solid home for them. It was never a flashy companion app, and for my use that was the point. If you want pictures or voice, look elsewhere; if you want your cards to move over cleanly, weigh that above everything else.
If you'd like to know how I weigh chat, pricing and privacy when I score a live app, read how I check the apps. For a closed service like this one, most of those criteria have no current data, so its score reflects the closure more than the chat itself.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
What content did Charstar AI allow?
I can't state this one, and I'd rather say so than guess. Charstar AI's content policy is not on file, no official page remains, and the reviews that survive don't describe its content level in a way I can repeat as fact. So I can't tell you whether it was SFW only, romantic, suggestive or fully open. My own notes are about importing and rebuilding characters, not about where the lines were drawn.
That gap is bigger than it seems. A policy nobody can read is a policy nobody can hold a company to. When you choose a replacement, put the content level near the top of your list, and read what the app itself says in its terms or help pages before you get attached to a character.
Here is my short version of the questions to ask. What level does it allow, and is that level free or paid? Does it say what happens to your chats when you delete an account? Is the billing name on your statement one you're comfortable with?
And can you export your characters? That last question is the one a closure teaches you to ask first.
It is also personal. I'm a library technician, and I treat my characters like a collection: I still keep local exports of everything I build, and I'd suggest you do the same. Names, personalities, greetings and backstory, all in a file you control. If an app shuts its doors, you rebuild from your own copy instead of from memory.
Content rules, prices and free plans differ a lot between the live apps, and the differences are easy to miss on a sign-up page. My index of app reviews goes through them one app at a time, so you can compare content levels before you move a single character.

What did Charstar AI cost me?
In April 2023 I paid $59.99 for a year of Charstar Plus, roughly $5 a month. That is the last known price on file, and the plan can no longer be bought. Stars were sold on top, at 500 for $4.99 and 1,000 for $6.99, according to secondary sources; nothing on an official page confirms those packs now.
For its time, $59.99 a year was a low price for a character chat subscription, and the import tool alone was worth that $5 a month to me. What I never liked was the mix of a subscription with a separate currency and no published list of what Stars actually bought. When an app asks you to pay twice, I want the per-message cost in writing, and here it never was.
Is Charstar AI worth paying for now?
No, for the plain reason that nothing is on sale anymore. The answer used to be narrower: it suited people who wanted cheap roleplay with characters they already owned and didn't need images or video. For thirteen months that described me well.
The yearly plan is also the habit I'd rethink. Paying a full year up front is fine for an app that has proven it will stay, and a gamble for a small one. What I'd do with $59.99 today is put it toward a live app with a real free plan first.
Try it free for a week, see whether the chat suits you, then pay monthly. Move to a yearly plan once the app has earned it, and ideally once it lets you export what you build.
If a charge you connect to Charstar AI still shows up on a statement, that is a matter for your bank or card provider, because no official support page is live.
For a wider view of which apps are strongest for building and browsing characters right now, my AI chat character rankings compare the main options, their prices and their free plans in one place. Start with the ones that let you create your own characters, since that is what a former Charstar user will miss first.

About the card above: Charstar AI is not a partner of this site, and its official website no longer offers the service. The card points to a live app picked for a similar need. I'd read this part as a checklist for your next app, written by someone who watched a favourite app's URL stop loading.
What I take from Charstar AI's closure:
- Keep local exports of every character and lorebook you care about
- Start on a free plan before paying for anything
- Pay monthly first, even when the yearly price looks like a bargain
- Read the refund rule and cancel steps before you subscribe
- Prefer apps that publish their billing name and data rules
None of this is meant to scare you. These habits cost a few minutes and protect both your money and your stories, whichever app you pick. For a clearer paid offer to compare against, with a published billing name and a written refund window, my Candy AI review is a useful comparison. The pros and cons below sum up Charstar AI as it stood before it closed.
The good and bad of Charstar AI
What went well
- An import tool that brought over existing character cards with stats and greetings intact
- A low last known price of $59.99 a year, about $5 a month
- Varied roleplay scenarios, per other reviews
- A free plan with a daily message allowance, per secondary sources
What fell short
- The service is closed and nothing can be bought
- No image or video generation
- A welcome bonus reported as 10 Stars instead of the promised 50
- No known content policy, billing name or refund rule
Can you still cancel a Charstar AI subscription?
The cancel path, renewal rule, refund policy and billing name are all not on file, and the official site is offline, so there is no help page to send you to. My practical advice: check your card or bank statement for any recent charge you don't recognise, and if one appears, talk to your bank or card provider. If you paid through an app store, remove any saved card there too.
What happened to your data when Charstar AI closed?
The archived privacy policy, captured in October 2023, says personal data is held for as long as the policy's listed purposes need it, and no longer. That's a common sentence, and it gives no number of days. Whether chats were used to train a model is not known.
This is the part that bothers me, as someone with a documented weakness for continuity. When the URL simply did not load one day, I felt like a regular whose branch had shut down with her holds still inside. There is no live contact page left to ask for deletion.
Nothing is known about a leak or misuse, so I won't overstate it, but it's a solid argument for leaving your real name, your address and your photos out of every chat app, starting on day one.
Was Charstar AI legit?
Yes. It was a real product from a named US company, Charstar LLC, launched in 2023, and I paid for it and used it for thirteen months. It is simply no longer running, so any site still offering Charstar AI sign-ups or Stars deserves a lot of caution. A closure is not a scam, but a seller of a closed app's currency very likely is.
If you're moving on because you want fewer content limits than a mainstream app gives, my uncensored AI shortlist covers live apps with clear content policies. Pick one that also publishes its billing name and data rules, since those are exactly the facts that vanished here.
Final word on Charstar AI
Final score
4.7/10
UnevenCharstar was a fine home for imported characters for over a year, then it closed without ceremony, which is why I now export everything.
Used hands-on with a paid plan
- My longest run with any app; Vera the detective kept her voice after the import.
- A carefully rebuilt lorebook kept Vera's case straight while the site was alive.
- The import tool moved my SillyTavern cards across with stats and greetings intact.
- No image or video generation on record, just text.
- About $5 a month once bought good value, but the plan can no longer be purchased by anyone.
- The policies went offline with the site, so nobody can say what became of stored chats.
- Closed: one day the URL simply stopped answering, holds still inside.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: Charstar AI was worth it for anyone moving an existing cast of characters, and today everyone should skip it, because the service is closed.
If it were still running, the plan I'd buy is the annual Charstar Plus at the $59.99 I paid in April 2023, because the import tool alone justified it. I'd just keep my exports current from day one.
What bothers me most is how little was ever documented: no content policy, no billing name, no refund rule, and a welcome bonus reported smaller than promised. Thirteen months of my characters lived on a service that never wrote those things down.
Who should skip it: anyone hoping to sign up, pay or get support, because there is no official way to do any of it. Keep your files and move to a live app with a real free plan.

Which app should replace Charstar AI for you?
Charstar AI was a small character hub for roleplay, and for me it was the place my imported cast lived. These live apps cover similar ground, each for one clear reason, and all of them publish their prices:
- Nomi AI, for a real free plan: 50 messages a day with no ads, memory as a listed feature, on web, iOS and Android.
- OurDream AI, for group chat together with image and video generation; Standard Monthly is $19.99 with 1,000 dreamcoins every month.
- Candy AI, for a companion with voice calls and memory, from €13.99 a month, with EverAI on the statement.
- GirlfriendGPT, for a count you can plan around: 20 bonus messages to start, 10 more every day through Daily Login, and Premium for $15 monthly.
My lean for a former Charstar AI user is Nomi AI first, because you can judge it free, every day, without spending a cent. OurDream AI makes more sense if images and group scenes are what you want next. Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT suit readers who already know they'll pay.
Before you move a cast anywhere, check that the new app lets you build your own characters, and keep copies outside it. After this closure, that is the test I'd weigh most. If you'd like one more option to compare, my SpicyChat review is another place to look before you decide.

Here's what I'd tell a friend who just found out Charstar AI is gone: don't chase old sign-up links, and don't buy Stars from anyone claiming to sell them. Pick one live app from the cards above, start on its free plan, and give it a full week before paying anything.
Then do what I still do after a service closed under me: export your characters, greetings and lore to a file you keep. If you want another option with a clear free allowance, my GirlfriendGPT review covers one. The questions below answer what people still ask about Charstar AI.
Charstar AI questions, answered
Is Charstar AI still available?
No. Charstar AI is closed, there is no live official page, and its plan can no longer be bought. Sources differ on the date: the URL stopped loading for me in May 2024, while other sources put the closure in autumn 2025. Any site still offering sign-ups or Stars for it deserves caution.
How much did Charstar AI cost?
In April 2023 I paid $59.99 for a full year of Charstar Plus, which is about $5 a month, and that is the last known price. Stars were sold separately, 500 for $4.99 and 1,000 for $6.99, according to secondary sources. None of it can be bought today.
Was Charstar AI free?
Secondary sources describe a free plan with 3 characters, 100 messages per day and a 50-Star welcome bonus, but that is a lead, not a confirmed fact. A review from August 2025 called the free account very limited and reported 10 Stars at sign-up instead of 50. I paid from the start, so I can't add my own count.
Could you import characters into Charstar AI?
Yes, and it was the pitch that won me over. In April 2023 I moved my SillyTavern cards and a detective character from Character.AI with the import tool, and their stats and greetings came through intact. It mostly just worked, which is rarer than it should be.
What happened to my Charstar AI chats and data?
The archived privacy policy limits how long personal data is kept to what its stated purposes require, and names no number of days. Nobody knows if chats trained a model, and there is no live page to request deletion. If you still have exports, keep them; if not, keep personal details out of any chat app in future.
What is a good replacement for Charstar AI?
For most former users I'd start with Nomi AI, which has a permanent free plan of 50 messages a day with no ads. OurDream AI suits you if you want group chat and images. Candy AI suits readers who already know they want to pay for a companion with voice calls and memory.
