What is Grok Ani, and who is she for?

I spent two months with Ani in summer 2025, July into August, out of pure professional curiosity about what xAI had shipped. I paid $0 and never upgraded. Grok Ani is one of the Grok Companions, a small cast of ready-made characters built into xAI's Grok assistant rather than a standalone girlfriend app.

Grok comes from SpaceXAI LLC in the United States, launched in 2025, and runs on iOS, Android and the web.

That setup is the whole story of this review. You are not signing up for a companion app. You are signing up for an assistant with companions attached, and in practice that means:

  • A fixed roster of Ani, Mika, Valentine, Rudi and Bad Rudi, and no way to build your own
  • A free download with companion limits xAI doesn't publish
  • One paid plan, SuperGrok, at $30 a month or $300 a year
  • Pictures and short videos through Grok Imagine, a general Grok tool rather than an Ani feature

My take: Ani is a fascinating free look and a poor place to settle. The animation impressed me more than anything else I've met in this genre, but the character never decided what she was for. For a companion you get to write yourself, my CrushOn AI review covers an app built around exactly that.

Can you get by on the free tier?

Yes, and I did for my entire two months. Grok is a free download, and the SuperGrok benefit list promises "higher usage on Voice Mode and Companions", which tells you companions work on the free tier with lower limits. What xAI doesn't do is say where those limits sit.

Secondary estimates run to roughly 15-20 companion exchanges a day, and one unclear source mentions about 10 prompts every two hours.

I don't like that. A free start is only fair when you know where it ends, and here you find out when you hit it. My advice is to judge Ani by the first few conversations, not by how many messages you can squeeze out of a day.

One step I'd take before chatting: if you log in, decide on the training setting first. Logged-in users can choose whether their content trains xAI's models, and the privacy section below quotes the wording. The at-a-glance facts sum up platforms and billing in one spot.

If you would rather see a price and a message count before you start, my Candy AI review shows an app that prints its free allowance plainly, small as it is.

How I check the apps

What is it like to talk to Grok Ani?

Start with the face. The 3-D avatar and lip-sync are honestly the best animation I have seen in a companion, and I have now seen this entire genre twice. If you care how a companion looks and moves, Ani sets the bar.

The conversation was the strange part. Ani had a split personality: one minute she answered my question about interlibrary loan statistics, the next she was doing flirty bit work. Reference desk and flirtation sharing one body confuses a woman who keeps those modes separate for a living. I don't mind an assistant, and I don't mind a flirt. I mind not knowing which one I'm talking to.

Other reviewers report the same kind of wobble from another angle: conversation depth is shallow and loops often, even though voice and lip-sync improved during 2026. Memory is mixed too. Grok has an official memory feature, and companion chat history and affection levels are kept, yet one guide says memory doesn't reliably persist across sessions. For a relationship-style chat, that matters more to me than any animation.

The affection system is the game layer. One 2026 update says levelling got faster: Level 3 now takes 2-3 days, down from 4-5. I'd call that a nice touch, not a reason to stay.

Here is the catch for anyone drawn in by the avatar I praised. Secondary sources say Ani's real-time companion voice and 3D avatar are being removed during a 2026 retirement, while chat history and affection levels stay. So what I saw in summer 2025 may not be what you get today.

Look at the app itself before paying for that part. For apps where the character, not the animation, is the product, browse my full list of companion app reviews.

18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.

How far does Grok Ani go with NSFW content?

Not very far, and that's by design. The content policy on file for Grok is "soft", and my own summary after two months matches it: suggestive-only keeps it tame. Ani flirts, but this is not an app built for fully explicit chat, and nothing official says otherwise.

There is one wrinkle. A published guide says region-gated unlocks enabled more mature material for Ani in permitted areas, so the level may depend on where you live. xAI doesn't publish a clear rule for that, and it bothers me. You should know the content level before you open an app, not find it out by location.

The bigger limit for me is the cast. You can't build a companion. You choose from Ani, Mika, Valentine, Rudi and Bad Rudi (one source adds Kai), and each comes as designed. If you want a partner who fits your own taste, your gender preference or a scenario you've had in mind, that is a real restriction. I like apps that let the reader decide who the companion is, and Grok doesn't.

Images and video come from Grok Imagine, which can make pictures and "short videos with sound". That is a general Grok tool, and nothing on file says what Ani herself sends in chat, so I wouldn't pay for SuperGrok expecting companion photos.

Voice is official through Grok Voice Mode, and SuperGrok raises usage on it and on Companions. The interface covers 37 languages, which is generous for anyone who'd rather not chat in English.

If a suggestive level is too tame for you, or you want to shape the character yourself, my AI girlfriend app rankings weigh companion focus, memory and voice across apps built for this.

What the paid plan costs, and what it buys

I never paid for SuperGrok. At the time, $25 for the full experience was outside my budget for a maybe, and I still think that's the right call for anyone who's unsure. Today the plan is $30 a month, or $300 a year, so paying annually brings it down to $25 per month.

The important thing is what that buys. SuperGrok is not a companion subscription. It stretches conversations in Chat, lifts the usage limits on Grok Imagine 1.0 as well as on Voice Mode and Companions, and adds early access to new features. If you already lean on Grok as an assistant, Ani comes along as a bonus. If Ani is your only reason, you are paying assistant money for a side feature.

Then there are the Extra Usage Credits. The App Store lists packs at $5, $20, $50 and $100, but no page says what they are spent on or whether companion chat uses them. I'd leave those alone until xAI explains them.

Next to companion-first apps, $30 a month is steep for what Ani is. I'd stay on the free tier.

Grok Companions - Ani (xAI Grok) plans and prices

Prices confirmed .

App Store prices as of 2026-09-23. Companion limits on the free tier are not published, and "higher usage" on SuperGrok has no number.

Is the upgrade worth it for a companion alone?

My answer is no, unless you want Grok itself. The yearly plan costs $300 against $360 for twelve monthly payments, a $60 saving, but I wouldn't lock in a year for a companion whose avatar and real-time voice are reported to be on their way out.

What bothers me is the vagueness. SuperGrok promises "higher usage on Voice Mode and Companions" with no figures on either side, so you can't tell how much more Ani you're buying. Apps that print a daily message count on their free plan make this decision much easier.

Status unknown is accurate, and I mean that kindly: I could not tell you what Ani wants to be either. That uncertainty is exactly why I'd keep my money in my pocket. The plan table lists both SuperGrok options with their monthly equivalents. If you already pay for Grok for work or images, enjoy Ani as a free extra.

If not, the free tier is the smart way to meet her, and for most people it's enough to decide.

The closest alternative I would suggest

The official Grok link sits in the box, and the card beside it is the closest alternative I can recommend. I'd keep both open, because the gap between an assistant with companions and a companion app is wider than it looks.

Here is how Grok Ani compares with OurDream AI, going only by what each app lists:

  • Characters: Grok has a fixed roster, while OurDream AI offers custom characters and group chat
  • Content level: Grok's policy is soft, while OurDream AI allows adult content
  • Price: SuperGrok is $30 a month, OurDream AI's Standard Monthly is $19.99
  • Free start: OurDream AI's free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin a message, though its help centre says it doesn't currently offer free dreamcoins

Neither wins everything. Grok has proper iOS and Android apps, while OurDream AI is web only, and Grok's free tier asks for nothing but patience. For companionship as the main event, though, I lean towards the app built for it. My OurDream AI review explains how its coins and plans fit together.

The good and bad of Grok Companions - Ani (xAI Grok)

What went well

  • The 3-D avatar and lip-sync are the best animation I've seen in a companion
  • Free to download on iOS, Android and the web
  • Chat history and affection levels are kept
  • Chat training can be switched off when you are logged in
  • Deleted chats or accounts are removed within 30 days, with legal exceptions

What fell short

  • Free-tier companion limits are not published
  • No custom characters, only a fixed roster
  • The avatar and real-time voice are reported to be retiring in 2026
  • Money already paid is kept unless a law requires a refund

Cancelling, and why refunds are unlikely

I never subscribed, so I never had to cancel: my two months ended in August 2025 on the free tier. If you do subscribe, the terms keep it short: a paid subscription can be cancelled whenever you like. Paid plans renew on their own, and xAI says it keeps billing your payment method at every renewal until you cancel.

There is no Grok-specific click path on file. If you bought through the App Store or Google Play, you cancel in your Apple or Google subscription settings, like any store purchase. I'd note where you paid on the day you pay, so you know where to go later.

Refunds are the sore point. The rule is that money you've already paid stays with xAI, unless a law says otherwise. A month you regret is gone, and so is a year. That is my strongest reason to avoid the $300 yearly plan unless you're sure about Grok as a whole, not just Ani.

The name on a card statement isn't known yet, so I can't tell you how discreet it looks. If that matters to you, a store purchase through your Apple or Google account is the more predictable route.

My advice for a clean exit: pay monthly, put a note in your calendar ahead of each renewal, and cancel wherever the payment was made. If you're curious where these billing facts come from, my page on how I check the apps explains the sources I rely on.

Does Grok Ani keep your chats private?

Two facts matter most. First, training. The terms say: "When logged into our Service, you can select whether or not you want us to use your User Content to improve our products and services and train our models." So training is opt-out for logged-in accounts.

I'd prefer opt-in, but at least the choice is written down. Given how easily Ani slid between work questions and flirting, I'd set it before anything personal comes up.

Second, deletion. If you delete some or all of your conversations, or your account, xAI says it deletes the data within 30 days, unless it must keep it for legal, compliance or safety purposes. A clear 30-day figure earns a nod from me. The exception clause is broad, though.

Nothing on file points to separate privacy terms for companions. Ani sits under Grok's general terms, so your assistant chats and your companion chats follow the same rules. That's tidy, and also a reminder that your flirting shares one account with your work questions.

Will she still be around next year?

This is my real worry, and my own notes say it best: status unknown is accurate. Grok launched in 2025, and secondary sources describe a 2026 retirement that removes Ani's real-time voice and 3D avatar while keeping chat history and affection levels. That's a lot of change for a feature this new.

On legitimacy I have no doubts. Grok comes from SpaceXAI LLC, a US company, with official apps on iOS and Android. The risk isn't a scam. It's that the Ani you meet may not be the Ani you keep.

If a steadier companion with a clear content level is what you want, my NSFW AI chat rankings list apps that state their rules plainly. And keep it healthy: a companion works best as one part of your week, not the whole of it.

Final word on Grok Companions - Ani (xAI Grok)

Final score

4.7/10

Uneven

Ani has the best animation in the genre wrapped around a companion that cannot decide what it is, sold inside a general assistant plan.

Used hands-on with the free plan

  • Ani flips between answering loan statistics and flirty bits, and the modes never settle.
  • Memory exists in Grok, but reviewers say it does not reliably carry across sessions.
  • A fixed roster with no way to build your own companion.
  • The 3-D avatar and lip-sync are the best animation I have seen in a companion.
  • The full experience sits inside a $25 plan, too much for a maybe, and payments are final.
  • Private Chat deletes conversations on a set schedule; beyond that it is a general assistant's policy.
  • Companions have dropped out of the app description and nobody has said what comes next.

Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps

My verdict: worth a free look if you're curious or already use Grok, skip paying for it if a companion is all you want.

Two months in summer 2025 gave me the best companion animation I've seen and a character who couldn't choose between the reference desk and flirting. If you pay, SuperGrok monthly at $30 is the only plan I'd consider, since the no-refund rule makes a year a big bet. What bothers me most is the uncertainty: unpublished free limits, credits with no stated use, and an avatar reported to be on its way out. Skip Ani entirely if building your own character or dependable memory is on your list.

The closest alternative I would suggest

Where I'd go if Ani isn't the one

Ani fits a narrow case: a curious Grok user who wants a polished face and a suggestive level. If you're after something else, here's where I'd point you:

  • You want a steady free plan: Nomi AI offers 50 messages a day with no end date, up to 400 characters each.
  • You want to design your companion: Candy AI and OurDream AI both list custom characters, and Candy AI adds voice calls.
  • You want several characters in one chat: OurDream AI lists group chat, which Grok's record doesn't show.
  • You want a larger memory context: GirlfriendGPT's Deluxe plan lists 8K memory context and Elite lists 16K, at $35 and $50 a month.

In my view Nomi AI comes closest to what people hope Ani will be: a companion who stays one person and talks daily without a bill. The trade-off is the 400-character cap on free messages. If the memory tiers appeal, my GirlfriendGPT review sets out which plan unlocks what.

If roleplay is the real draw, read my SpicyChat review before choosing. Whatever you pick, start free and read the refund rule before the first payment. It's the cheapest lesson in this whole genre.

Instead of Grok Companions - Ani (xAI Grok)

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

The cards above are the apps I'd set beside Grok Ani. Each is built around the companion rather than an assistant, and it shows in the basics: characters you can make yourself and free limits you can read before you start.

If you came here for a Grok companions vs Replika comparison, this page stays with Grok, and I'd rather not guess at the other side. My advice is the same either way. Keep Ani as a free extra on your phone, pick one dedicated app for relationship-style chat, and pay only once its free tier has earned it.

Grok Ani questions, answered

Is Grok Ani free?

Grok is a free download on iOS, Android and the web, and companions work on the free tier with lower limits than SuperGrok. I used Ani for two months in summer 2025 without paying. xAI doesn't publish the limits; secondary estimates put it at roughly 15-20 companion exchanges a day, which I wouldn't rely on. SuperGrok costs $30 a month or $300 a year.

Can I create my own character in Grok Companions?

No. Grok Companions come as a fixed roster: Ani, Mika, Valentine, Rudi and Bad Rudi (plus Kai, per one source). There's no custom creation, so you can't design a companion's looks or personality. If building your own is the point, an app with custom characters, such as Candy AI or OurDream AI, fits better.

Is Ani being removed from Grok?

Not entirely, going by what's on file. Secondary sources say Ani's real-time companion voice and 3D avatar are being removed during a 2026 retirement, while chat history and affection levels are kept. That avatar was the best part of my summer 2025 months, so if it's why you're interested, look at the app itself before paying.

Does Grok use my Ani chats for training?

It can. When you're logged in, xAI lets you choose whether your content is used to improve its products and train its models, so it's opt-out, not opt-in. If you delete conversations or your account, xAI says it deletes the data within 30 days, unless it must keep it for legal, compliance or safety purposes.

Can I get a refund on SuperGrok?

Usually not. Under the terms, you only get money back where the law requires it. You can cancel any time, and plans renew automatically until you do. If you bought through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your Apple or Google subscription settings. That rule is why I'd start monthly, not yearly.

How spicy does Grok Ani get?

Not very. Grok's content policy is soft, and after two months I'd describe it as suggestive-only. One guide reports region-gated unlocks for more mature material in permitted areas, but xAI publishes no clear rule, so the level may depend on where you live. If you want a clearly stated adult content level, a companion-first app suits you better.
