RedQuill AI Review: The Lorebook Kept My Plot
Has a free plan
starts at $15/mo
What is RedQuill, and what did I write with it?
Summer 2024 was my novel era, and RedQuill was the engine. Over two months, June and July, I wrote a twelve-chapter paranormal romance with it, all on the free tier, and then exported the manuscript. That file is still my favorite thing this hobby has given me.
RedQuill is a web-based AI story generator from Innerworlds, Inc. in the United States: you pick characters, settings and tones, and it writes fiction with you. It is not a companion app: outside reviews describe no avatar, no relationship status and no voice button, and that matches my summer exactly.
My take in brief: for someone who wants to direct a plot, it is wonderful. For someone who wants a girlfriend to talk to, it is the wrong tool, and it will keep steering your chat toward act three.
What this page covers:
- The free tier I wrote on, and what it offers today
- The Lorebook and why my plot held together
- Pro at $15 a month and the Quills system
- Refunds, privacy and the app's uncertain status
- Where to go if you want to talk rather than write
If a character chat is what you really came for, my CrushOn AI write-up covers that side.

How much can you write on the RedQuill free tier?
Enough for a novel, in my case. My whole twelve-chapter story came from the free tier over June and July 2024, and I spent $0. I can't give you a daily count from that summer, only the result.
Today the official FAQ keeps it vague, saying only that free users can create a limited number of stories each day. No number. One outside source from May 2026 put the free allowance at 5 daily Quills, but that is older than I'd like, so treat it as a lead.
If it still holds, the gap to Pro is wide: 150 Quills a day is 30 times that.
My view: a daily reset is a fair way to run a free tier, because you get a fresh start each day instead of a trial that vanishes. What I dislike is the missing number. A story tool should tell you what a free day buys. Quills also reset daily and never carry over, so a quiet day is simply lost.
The RedQuill at a glance box has the plan and platform basics. For a free start where the coin count is written down, look at OurDream AI's Dreamcoin rules.

How well does RedQuill keep a long story straight?
This is the part that won me over. I wrote a twelve-chapter paranormal romance, and the Lorebook kept every detail consistent: hair color, a dead sister, the phase of the moon. Better, honestly, than several human authors I have read. The consistency still makes me emotional.
Chapters held continuity across dozens of scenes, which is the whole trick and the whole point of a story tool. My supervisor at the library once asked why I looked proud, and I said inventory, which was technically true. My queer book club got the real story later.
The outside reports line up with that. One review says RedQuill maintained narrative cohesion across chapters using the Lorebook. Other reviewers report it shines in one-shots and short chapters, less so in a long companion history.
I don't see those as a contradiction: it holds a plot beautifully, and it does not hold a relationship, because it is not trying to.
That is where my friction came from. RedQuill is a story engine, so when I wanted to just talk, it kept raising the stakes. I wanted quiet, and it wanted act three. If you open it expecting a gentle evening chat, you will feel that pull quickly.
Voice is not part of the product; secondary sources mention text-to-speech narration only. Memory is not listed as an official feature, so the Lorebook is what carries continuity. Images exist on paid plans, and one review calls image generation a side tool rather than a main feature, which fits a writing app.
To see how a story engine compares with the chat apps I cover, my full index of app reviews puts them side by side.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
What does RedQuill allow in stories?
RedQuill's policy allows adult content, and the app files itself under adult fiction alongside story and image generation. The footer is direct about the audience: 18+ only, and by using the site you confirm you're 18 or over. No ID step is described; it is a self-declaration.
What I like is the control. The homepage says "Choose characters, settings, and tones", so the level of a story follows your setup rather than a character's mood. For a writing tool, that is the right design. You are the author, and the app writes toward what you asked for.
What the records don't show is a content setting, a toggle or a level picker, so I can't tell you how you'd dial things up or down beyond your own story choices. I'd rather admit that gap than make up a menu.
Images sit on the paid side. The homepage says you upgrade to "unlock AI image creation", and the terms tie premium features to Quills.
On inclusivity, I love the invitation to "remix favorite ships or invent your own worlds". Fan pairings of every kind keep fiction communities alive, and a blank page with your own characters is about as inclusive as software gets. Nothing on record describes gender options as a setting, so that is my read of the invitation, not a feature promise.
My opinion: RedQuill suits readers who want to write their own spicy stories with full control over the cast. If you want someone to flirt back in real time, it is not built for that. For companion apps that are, my AI girlfriend app shortlist is the better starting point.
Who RedQuill suits
Great for
- Readers who want to direct their own long stories
- Anyone who cares about continuity across many chapters
- Fans who like remixing favorite ships or inventing new worlds
- Writers happy to start on a free daily allowance
Skip if
- Anyone who wants a companion to chat with
- People who want voice or live calls
- Readers who want a quiet, low-stakes conversation
- Anyone who needs a mobile app
What RedQuill costs
The price list is short: one paid plan on record. Pro is $15.00 a month and gives 150 Quills a day, as listed on the official Quills page. The terms say Quills unlock premium features, either through a subscription or through a-la-carte purchases, and that each day's Quills expire at the daily reset instead of rolling into the next period. No a-la-carte prices are published.
I never paid. My novel came entirely from the free tier in summer 2024, so the plan below is today's listing, not my receipt.
My take: $15.00 is a fair price for a writing tool if you write most days. The daily reset is the catch. Quills do not bank, so a busy weekend can't borrow from a quiet Tuesday. If you write in bursts, you pay for days you don't use.
I'd also like to see a yearly option. There isn't one on record, and for a tool you might keep for a whole novel, that seems like a missed chance for both sides.
My advice: write on the free tier until the daily limit genuinely gets in your way. Then take one month of Pro and see whether 150 Quills changes how you work.

Is RedQuill worth paying for?
For writers, yes, with conditions. The free tier carried my twelve-chapter story, which tells me the free start is real. Pro makes sense when the daily limit starts to cut a writing session short, not before.
At $15.00 a month for 150 Quills a day, Pro is the only paid choice on record, so the decision is simple: pay or don't. If you do, one month is the right first step, and I'd use the Quills freely rather than saving them, since they reset each day anyway.
What bothers me is the refund rule. You can generally request a refund within 24 hours, but not once any credits have been used. So the moment you try Pro properly, the refund door closes.
For a companion, no. Save your money for an app built for conversation.
The table right after this lists what the Pro plan costs, so you can weigh it against your writing habits.

Joi AI

Rating 5.8/10
The plain link above goes to RedQuill's own website, and the card beside it is an app I'd suggest for a different reason. Before paying, here is what I'd want you to know:
- RedQuill writes stories; it is not a companion to chat with
- Unused Quills vanish at each daily reset
- A refund is only possible within 24 hours and before any credit is used
- A chargeback cancels the subscription immediately
- The app's current status is uncertain, so export your work
That last point is personal. RedQuill's status is unknown today, and my manuscript is safe only because I exported it in July 2024. The lesson I learned when Charstar closed held here: if a story matters to you, keep your own copy.
If what you want is a character who talks back, with memory and voice calls on a monthly plan, Candy AI's plans and voice features are a closer fit than any story engine. The pros and cons below sum up my view of RedQuill.
The good and bad of RedQuill
What went well
- The Lorebook keeps characters and details consistent across chapters
- A free tier with a daily reset, enough for a full story in my case
- Pro is a simple flat $15.00 a month for 150 Quills a day
- Full control over characters, settings and tones
What fell short
- A story engine, not a companion: it pushes toward plot
- No voice, and memory is not listed as a feature
- Refunds end as soon as any credit is used
- Current status is uncertain
How do you cancel RedQuill, and what about refunds?
I never had a subscription to cancel. My two months were free, and in July 2024 I simply stopped and exported the manuscript. If you do pay, the path is clearer than on many apps.
The terms give the cancel steps directly: go to the Billing Portal tab in Settings and click the "Cancel subscription" button. Subscriptions renew on a recurring basis for periods of the same length as your first one until you cancel. There is no annual plan on record, so each renewal is one month of Pro at $15.00.
RedQuill gets strict when it comes to refunds. The terms say that, generally, you may request a refund within 24 hours of your payment, but refunds are not available if any credits have been used, whenever you ask. In practice, that means the refund exists only for a purchase you haven't touched.
A chargeback also cancels the subscription immediately, so I'd write to support first before going to your bank.
My view: the cancel path is fair and easy to find. The refund rule is tight but written down, which I prefer to vague promises. Let the free tier win you over before paying for a single month, and if you mean to stop, put a reminder in your calendar a few days ahead of renewal.
Payment runs through credit card or other methods via third-party payment processors. The statement descriptor is not on record, so I can't say how the charge looks on your statement. Refund and billing rules like these shape my scores, and how I check the apps explains the weighting.
What does RedQuill do with your stories?
Under the privacy policy, personal data is held for as long as the listed purposes need it, and no longer. It names no fixed number of months or years. That is a common line, and I'd like a number.
The training question is murkier. The policy mentions "data collected through the process of training RedQuill machine learning algorithms", which I can't read as a clear yes or no about your stories. My advice: treat what you write as possibly used to improve the service.
For a writing tool, that matters more than for a chat app, because your stories may be personal, or even something you hope to publish.
So my rule for RedQuill is to keep real names and identifying details out of prompts and characters, and to export your work regularly. I exported my whole manuscript when I stopped in July 2024.
Is RedQuill still around, and is it legit?
It is run by a named company, Innerworlds, Inc. in the United States, with published terms and a privacy policy. The launch year is not on record, and the app's current status is uncertain. Its Quills page still listed Pro at $15.00 on 23 September 2026, so the pricing side was readable then, but I can't promise more than that.
This is exactly why the export matters. The lesson I took from Charstar's closure, keep your own copy, held here. The manuscript is exported, and that file is still my favorite thing this hobby gave me. Whatever happens to RedQuill, my story does not depend on it.
If you want adult chat rather than adult fiction, from apps with a clearer status, my NSFW AI chat rankings cover that side.
Final word on RedQuill
Final score
5.7/10
UnevenRedQuill is a story engine rather than a companion, and it kept my twelve-chapter novel consistent, but its status is unclear, so export your work.
Used hands-on with the free plan
- It is a story engine, so when I wanted quiet talk it kept raising the stakes.
- The Lorebook kept hair color, a dead sister and the moon phase straight across twelve chapters.
- You choose characters, settings and tone, or remix favourite pairings.
- Image creation is a premium side tool and narration is text-to-speech only.
- The free tier allows a few stories a day, with credits for more.
- Its policy is unclear on whether stories feed training.
- Status is unknown now, so export anything you care about.
Bars use a 0-10 scale. The overall score is a weighted average of these criteria, and every app uses identical weights. How we review the apps
My verdict: RedQuill is worth it for writers who want a story engine that keeps a long plot straight; anyone after a companion to chat with, or any voice at all, should look elsewhere.
Start on the free tier, the way I wrote my whole novel. If the daily limit gets in your way, Pro at $15.00 a month is the only plan, and one month is the smart first step.
What bothers me most is the refund rule: 24 hours, and gone the moment you use a single credit. The uncertain status is a close second, so export as you go.
Who should skip it: anyone looking for an AI girlfriend, anyone who wants quiet chat rather than rising stakes, and anyone who needs a phone app.

When another app fits better than RedQuill AI
RedQuill does one thing: stories. If that is not quite what you want, here is where I'd look, going by what each app has on file:
- DreamGen, for story generation plus roleplay and group chat, with a 5,000-token context on the Starter plan at $7.83 a month.
- Joi AI, for a companion with memory, images and video, and 6 lifetime free image generations to start.
- GoLove AI, for group scenes: other reviewers report three characters in its Group Scenarios each stayed distinct, never merging into one voice.
- PolyBuzz, for a phone app on iOS and Android with free text chat on the Standard model, with ads.
My pick depends on the gap you feel. Missing the long plot? DreamGen is the natural next step. Missing someone who wants a quiet evening rather than act three?
Joi AI or GoLove AI suits you better, and both allow adult content, though GoLove AI keeps it on paid plans.
PolyBuzz is the odd one out: its content level is soft, so I'd only send you there for a friendly character app on your phone rather than spicy fiction.
If you like the idea of browsing a big library of ready-made characters, my SpicyChat review covers a community hub. It is one more option to weigh before you commit.

Here is what I'd tell a friend who writes: open RedQuill on the free tier, build a Lorebook with the details you care about, and write three chapters of the story you actually want. If the continuity holds the way it did for me, it is worth a month of Pro. Export as you go, whatever you decide.
If you realize halfway through that you want to talk rather than write, stop there. My Joi AI review is a good next read for a companion who chats back. The FAQ below picks up the practical questions: free limits, Quills, refunds and status.
RedQuill questions, answered
Is RedQuill AI free?
Yes, with a daily limit. The official FAQ says the free tier lets you create a limited number of stories daily, without giving a number; one older outside source put it at 5 daily Quills. I wrote a whole twelve-chapter story on the free tier in June and July 2024 and spent $0.
How much does RedQuill Pro cost?
Pro is $15.00 a month and gives 150 Quills a day, as listed on the official Quills page on 23 September 2026. Leftover Quills expire each day at the reset. No yearly plan and no a-la-carte prices are on record.
Is RedQuill an AI girlfriend app?
No. It is a story generator: you choose characters, settings and tones, and it writes fiction with you. Other reviewers report no avatar, no relationship status and no voice button. When I wanted to just talk, it kept raising the stakes, so for a companion I'd pick a chat app instead.
Does RedQuill keep long stories consistent?
In my experience, yes. The Lorebook kept every detail of my twelve-chapter story consistent, from hair color to the phase of the moon, across dozens of scenes. One outside review also found it maintained narrative cohesion across chapters using the Lorebook.
Can I get a refund from RedQuill?
Generally only within 24 hours of payment, and not if any credits have been used, whenever you ask. A chargeback cancels the subscription immediately, so contact support first. To cancel, go to the Billing Portal tab in Settings and click "Cancel subscription".
Is RedQuill still working?
Its current status is uncertain. The Quills page still listed Pro at $15.00 on 23 September 2026, but I can't promise more than that. If you write there, export your work regularly; I exported my manuscript when I stopped in July 2024.
