Checked twice a day, every 12 hours. About this check

What the status box can and cannot tell you

The box at the top is the first thing I would read, and I would read it literally. Up means SpicyChat's site answered the last automated request normally. Slow means it answered, but late. Down means the server sent an error, timed out or refused the connection.

Unknown is my favourite honest label: the server turned the request away as a bot, so the result cannot say either way, and it is not counted as an outage.

Here is the catch I want you to keep in mind. A green chip only proves the front door opened. It does not prove that your login works, that the chat model replies, or that images load for your plan.

So if the box says Up and SpicyChat AI not working is still your reality, the problem is probably narrower than a full outage.

One SpicyChat quirk fools people into thinking the site broke. According to the official plan list, Free means the Default model, ads, and waiting lines at times. A waiting line on a free account can look a lot like a frozen app.

For $5.95 a month, Get a Taste names skipping those lines as a benefit, which tells me the lines are a known part of the free experience, not a fault.

My quick sorting guide, before you touch any settings:

  • Status Up, but a spinner on the free plan: likely a waiting line, so give it a moment.
  • Status Up, but only your account fails: sign out and back in, then try another browser.
  • Status Slow: expect late replies for everyone, not just you.
  • Status Down: the problem sits on SpicyChat's side, and waiting is the fix.
  • Status Unknown: the request was blocked, so lean on the other signals below.

I like that SpicyChat is web only on the record, because it keeps troubleshooting simple. There is no app store version to update and no separate phone app that can break on its own. Your browser is the whole client, which means a cache clear or a private window covers most of the local fixes.

If you are still deciding whether the service is worth your evenings at all, outages are only one part of the picture. My full SpicyChat review covers the free tier, the plans and the catches in more depth. On this page I will stay with the practical side: what the error means, what to do about it, and where to go while you wait.

Why a SpicyChat outage stings more than a slow website

A shopping site going down costs you a few minutes. A companion chat going down can cost you a mood, a storyline and, on a paid plan, a slice of what you pay for. I think it is fair to take that seriously without making it dramatic.

Start with the money. The paid plans run from $5.95 a month for Get a Taste to $29.95 a month for Im All In, while a year of each costs $60.00, $199.95 or $299.95 respectively. Under the terms, a fee can't be refunded after the account has been used, and the FAQ allows refunds only in exceptional circumstances.

My honest read: an ordinary outage is unlikely to count as exceptional, so do not plan on getting money back for a lost evening. If you want to ask anyway, ask politely and keep your expectations low.

That is also why I would not buy a yearly plan in a week when the site feels shaky. The yearly price is about 17% off the monthly rate, per the official copy, but it locks a year of money into one web service. A monthly plan lets you walk away if the problems keep coming back, and your benefits last to the end of the paid period either way.

Then there is the story itself. SpicyChat keeps context in a memory window: 4K on the Free plan and on Get a Taste, 8K on True Supporter and 32K on Im All In. A long break mid-scene often means you come back to a thread you half forgot yourself.

I would paste a short recap into the chat when the site returns, rather than hoping the character picks up the thread cold.

Other reviewers report a free tier that beats most rivals for generosity, with roleplay they call well-paced and driven by the characters. I agree the free start looks strong on paper, and it is also the reason people get attached quickly. When something you enjoy costs nothing, a sudden gap feels bigger than it is.

There is a calmer way to handle it. Keep one backup app in mind before you need it, ideally one with a real free tier so you are not paying twice. My shortlist of apps that fill the same gap as SpicyChat was put together for exactly this moment. You do not need to switch for good.

You need somewhere to spend an evening while the servers catch up, and then you can come back to the characters you already built.

How this check works

The status box is fed by an automated check from our own server, twice a day, every 12 hours. Each run sends one ordinary web request to SpicyChat's official site and times the answer. No login, no chat, no crawling.

The box prints when the last run happened in UTC, along with the response time, uptime over 7 and 30 days, and a 30-day bar with one cell per day.

The states follow simple rules. A normal answer is Up. An answer that takes longer than 3 seconds is Slow. A server error, no answer within 10 seconds or a failed connection is Down.

When the server refuses the request because it looks automated (HTTP 401, 403 or 429), the result is Unknown, and that is never counted as an outage. I like that rule, because bot walls are common and counting them would make every app look worse than it is.

What the check cannot see matters just as much. It does not sign in, so a login problem stays invisible to it, and a slow model or a free-plan waiting line will not show up either. A result more than 14 hours old is marked Out of date.

Two checks a day can also miss a short outage in between, so if SpicyChat fails right now, trust your own screen and the fixes below. The same method sits behind every page in my is it down hub.

Why is SpicyChat AI not working for you?

When the box shows Up and your screen shows nothing, the fault usually sits on your side of the connection. My order of fixes, from least effort to most:

  • Reload the tab, then open SpicyChat in a private window to rule out a stale cache or a misbehaving extension.
  • Switch networks, from Wi-Fi to mobile data or back, since some office networks block chat sites.
  • Sign out and back in, which clears a session that expired in the background.
  • Try another browser; SpicyChat lists the web as its only platform, so there is nothing in an app store to update.
  • If a single message fails, resend it once before you start a whole new chat.

None of these touch your plan or your characters. I would leave clearing all site data until last, since it signs you out and you will want your login details handy. If every step fails and the box still says Up, the problem may be limited to some accounts or one region, and the honest answer is to wait a little and try again.

Problems that feel like an outage but are not

Plenty of SpicyChat complaints have nothing to do with the servers. I would sort them out before you blame the site.

Images come first. The Free plan has no images or voice at all, per the plan list, so a missing picture on a free account is the plan, not a fault. On paid plans, other reviewers report that the image setting for adult content sits several menus deep: one setting for showing that content on your profile and a separate switch inside the conversation. If pictures come back blank or filtered, that pair of settings is where I would look first.

Reply quality comes second. Other reviewers report a low aggregate rating of 2/5 on Trustpilot, with complaints about repetitive replies and logic errors. That is irritating, but it is a model issue, not downtime.

On Free, a reply can't exceed 180 tokens and memory stops at 4K, so brief, forgetful answers there are how the plan is designed, not a sign the chat is broken.

What I would open while SpicyChat is down

My advice is simple: pick a backup that matches what you use SpicyChat for, and start it free where you can. If you want a daily free allowance and a companion that remembers, Nomi AI offers 50 messages a day on its permanent free plan, on web, iOS and Android. When images and voice matter most, Candy AI's paid plan bundles images, video and voice calls, with only a tiny free start.

OurDream AI is roleplay-first with group chat, though its free start is thin: the free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start at 1 Dreamcoin per message, while its help centre says it does not currently offer free dreamcoins, so that number may change.

None of these is a SpicyChat clone, and I would not pretend otherwise. A free chat with no paywall and no timer is hard to match. Treat the backup as a stopgap for an evening, not a new home. Curious where the scores for these apps come from? How I check the apps lays out the method behind every rating on this site.

Candy AI as a backup: where it beats SpicyChat and where it does not

Candy AI is the backup I would suggest to someone who uses SpicyChat mainly for pictures and voice. It is a companion and roleplay app from EverAI Limited in Malta, web only on the record, and it leans hard into media. The paid plan bundles unlimited text messages, custom companions, image and video generation and 100 tokens a month, and voice calls are part of the feature set too.

The free start is where I get cautious. The research value is just 5 messages, and they never refill. Five messages will not fill a night of chat. Adult content is paid-only, so if the free chat is what you miss from SpicyChat, Candy AI will not replace it at no cost. I would treat those free messages as a look at the interface and nothing more.

The price is the interesting part. The 1-Month Plan costs €13.99, while the 12-Month Plan is €47.88 paid at once, or €3.99 a month, on a 70% off sale verified on 2026-09-23. My take: the yearly deal is a bargain month by month, yet it ties you in for twelve months to an app you may only want as a stopgap.

If you just need something while SpicyChat recovers, the monthly plan is the cleaner choice, even though it costs more per month.

Billing is fairly discreet: the statement shows EverAI rather than the app name. You cancel through Settings / Unsubscribe in your account. For users outside the EU and UK, the refund window is 24 hours after payment, which is short, so make up your mind quickly if it is not for you. I do not love a window that tight, but at least it is written down plainly.

If you juggle several chat apps and want the same kind of status check for another one, my Character AI down page works exactly like this one.

  • Starting free: Free tier
  • Lowest price: €3.99 monthly (12-Month Plan)
  • Allowed: mature chat, paid plans
  • Runs on: web

Backups to open while SpicyChat is out

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

The short version before you go

If the box says Down, wait it out. Nothing on your side fixes a server problem, and SpicyChat's free chat will be there when it returns. If the box says Up and you are still stuck, work through the fixes above in order and leave clearing site data until last.

If you pay, remember the charge shows as NDAI.CHAT on your statement and that a used account means no refund on fees. An outage is not a reason to cancel in a panic. Cancelling from Profile > Manage Subscription keeps your benefits to the end of the paid period anyway.

My own view: SpicyChat's free tier is generous enough that one bad hour is not worth switching over. I would only move for good if the trouble keeps repeating, and then I would start with an app that has a clear free allowance. If you use more than one chat site, the same live check exists for Janitor AI's status and for PolyBuzz outages.

SpicyChat outage questions, answered

Is SpicyChat AI down right now?

The status box at the top of this page shows the result of the most recent automated check, with the time in UTC. Up means the site answered normally, Slow means it answered late, Down means the request failed, and Unknown means it was blocked as a bot. The check runs twice a day, so I cannot promise more than that result shows.

If the box says Up but you still cannot chat, the problem is more likely your session, browser or network.

Why is SpicyChat so slow on the free plan?

Per the official plan list, the Free plan uses the Default model and shows ads, and you may have to wait in line. So a slow start on a free account is often a queue, not an outage. Skipping those lines is one of the listed perks of Get a Taste, at $5.95 a month.

My view: wait a little before you pay, since the official page promises unlimited messages on the free plan with no timers.

What does "SpicyChat AI: there was an error" mean?

The official pages on file do not explain this message, so I will not guess at a cause. My practical advice: resend the message once, reload the tab, then sign out and back in. If the status box shows Down or Slow, the error is most likely part of a wider problem, and waiting is the fix. If the box shows Up, try a private window or another browser before you contact support.

Can I get a refund if SpicyChat is down?

Probably not for an ordinary outage. SpicyChat's terms rule out refunding a fee once the account has been used, and the FAQ allows refunds only in exceptional circumstances. I think that rule is strict, but it is clearly stated.

If you want to stop paying, cancel from Profile > Manage Subscription, which sends you to the payment platform, and your benefits last to the end of the paid period.

Does SpicyChat have a phone app I should update?

No phone app appears in the records. SpicyChat lists the web as its only platform, so there is no app store version to update or reinstall. When it will not load, your browser is the thing to fix: reload, open a private window, clear the site's cache, or switch browsers. I actually like this, because it means fewer moving parts when something breaks.

What should I use while SpicyChat is down?

Pick by what you miss. For a daily free allowance and memory, Nomi AI gives 50 messages a day on its permanent free plan. For pictures, video and voice, Candy AI has them on its paid plan, with a very small free start. For roleplay with group chat, OurDream AI fits, though its free start runs on Dreamcoins.

My advice is to start free wherever you can and skip a yearly plan bought just to fill one quiet evening.

Who runs SpicyChat?

NextDay AI Incorporated, based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with NextDay AI USA Inc in Delaware and NextDay AI EU Ltd in Limassol, Cyprus. Paid plans show as NDAI.CHAT on a card statement, which I think is reasonably discreet because it does not spell out the app name. Subscribers are also told in advance if the price rises, which I count as a fair touch.
