Checked twice a day, every 12 hours. About this check

What the status box above can and cannot tell you

The box at the top answers one narrow question: did Chai respond when this site last checked? You get a state chip (Up, Slow, Down or Unknown) and a time stamp in UTC. I'd read the time before the colour. The check runs twice a day, so even the newest reading can be hours old.

Here is how I read the four states:

  • Up: Chai answered the last check. If the app still fails for you, the cause is more likely your phone, your connection or the app version.
  • Slow: Chai answered, but late. Expect sluggish replies rather than a dead app.
  • Down: no proper answer came back. Waiting is usually the fix, not reinstalling.
  • Unknown: Chai's server turned our automated request away, often as bot protection, so there is no reading either way. I treat that as a blank, not as a warning.

What this page will never do is guess. There is no outage diary here and no count of past incidents, because I don't have one and I won't make one up. It is one snapshot, and the rest of the page is about what you do with it.

A quick word on what Chai is, because it shapes the fixes. Chai comes from Chai Research Corp. and runs as an app on iOS and Android; the records list no web version. That matters more than it sounds. When Chai will not load, you cannot simply open it in a browser tab to compare. Your whole toolkit is the phone, the network and the store listing.

It also matters for money. The paid tiers (Premium at $13.99 a month, Ultra at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week) are sold as in-app purchases, so a billing question during an outage runs through the store you paid in. The billing box below has the details, and I think it is worth a read before you tap anything.

My honest take on the free side: Chai is free to download, but no fixed free daily message limit is officially published, and secondary sources describe that limit as fluctuating. So if messages stop halfway through an evening, it may not be an outage at all. It may simply be the free allowance running dry. Rule that out before you assume the servers are to blame.

If you want the full picture of plans, memory and what the free start really covers, my full Chai review goes through all of it. This page keeps to the practical side: is it you, is it them, and what to do next.

Why a Chai outage feels bigger than a loading error

On paper, a Chai outage is an app that will not open for a while. In practice I think it lands harder than that, and it is worth being honest about why. Chai is built around companion chat and roleplay, and you can make your own characters. When a scene stalls in the middle, you are not losing a page. You are losing the thread of a story you were enjoying.

Memory makes this worse. Other reviewers report Chai losing established details after only three to five messages, and one hands-on memory test described the AI inventing a beach trip that never happened. If that is the normal state, a sudden break is the last thing a chat needs.

You come back, the context is thin, and the character may not pick up where you left off.

My advice is simple. If a story matters to you, keep your own short note of the key details: names, the setting, where the scene stopped. Then you can paste a line back in to steer the character once Chai returns. It is a small habit, and it spares you a lot of frustration.

The second reason an outage stings is money. The weekly Ultra plan is $19.99, which the records put at $86.62 a month if you keep it running. At that price, even a short stretch of downtime feels expensive, because you are paying by the week for access you cannot use.

For me, that is the plan most exposed to outage frustration, and the one I would think twice about.

Premium annual works the other way. At $134.99 a year, which comes to $11.25 a month, one bad evening barely registers across 12 months. If you already know you like Chai, the annual plan is the calmer buy.

If you are unsure, I would not lock into anything longer than a month until you have a feel for how reliable it is for you.

The third reason is plain habit. If Chai is where you unwind at the end of a day, a dead app changes the whole evening. That is a normal reaction and nothing to feel odd about. The practical answer is to have a backup ready before you need one.

If you want a shortlist, my page of apps like Chai worth a look sorts options by what they share with it: roleplay, companion chat and custom characters. Keep one bookmarked. Then an outage becomes a detour, not the end of your night.

How this check works

Our own server checks Chai twice a day, every 12 hours, with one automated request to its official website. It records whether the site answered, the HTTP code and the response time, in UTC. Slower than 3 seconds is Slow. No answer within 10 seconds, a server error or a failed connection is Down.

A request turned away as a bot (HTTP 401, 403 or 429) shows Unknown, never Down, because a locked door is not a broken one.

The box also shows uptime for 7 and 30 days and a 30-day bar, one cell per day. A result more than 14 hours old is marked Out of date.

Keep one thing in mind for Chai: it lives in its iOS and Android apps, and the check looks at the website. It cannot see inside the app, your account or your network. If the chip says Up and the app shows an error, trust the error on your screen.

Two checks a day can also miss a short outage in between, so if Chai fails right now, look at its official social channels too.

Every other app with a status page is in the full list of status pages.

Chai won't load? Try these fixes first

When the chip looks healthy and Chai still refuses to cooperate, the cause is often closer to home. These are the steps I'd go through, in this order, before assuming the worst:

  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If another app is also slow, the problem is your network, not Chai.
  • Force-close the app and open it again. A clean restart clears a surprising number of stuck screens.
  • Open the app's page in your phone's app store and see whether an update is waiting. An old version can fail after the service changes.
  • Restart the phone itself if the first three steps change nothing.
  • Look at your message count. On the free plan, no fixed daily limit is published, so a pause may be the allowance, not an outage.

If none of that helps and the chip also shows Down or Slow, the honest answer is to wait. Repeated reinstalls rarely beat patience, and I would not delete the app in frustration, because a fresh install does not make a server come back faster.

One more thing I'd rule out: a lapsed subscription. If a Premium or Ultra purchase failed to renew in the store, paid features can vanish in a way that looks like a fault. The store's subscription screen is the quickest place to confirm that before you blame Chai.

Where Chai's weak spots tend to show

I don't keep an outage history for Chai, and I won't pretend to. What the records do show is a pattern in the complaints, and it is worth knowing because some of those complaints look like outages when they are not.

The biggest one is memory. Other reviewers report that Chai loses details quickly, and a relayed user review sums it up as the AI forgetting a lot. If your character suddenly acts as if you never met, that is far more likely a memory limit than a server problem. A restart will not fix it. A short reminder message will.

The second is the free allowance. Since no fixed free daily limit is published and the limit reportedly fluctuates, a chat can stop without warning on the free plan. Again, that is a limit, not a crash.

My take is that this is the part of Chai I like least, because a reader cannot plan around a number that is not written down.

The third is features that were never there. The records list no voice calls and no group chat for Chai, and images are paid. If you are hunting for a voice button during an outage, it was not hiding.

If you want to know how I sort facts like these from official pages and outside reports, how I check the apps explains the method.

What to use while Chai is down

The right backup depends on why you open Chai in the first place. If it is for roleplay with your own characters, you want an app with custom characters and a real memory feature. If it is for a companion to talk to, voice calls and memory matter more than a big character library.

One practical difference: every backup below runs on the web, so it works in a browser tab even when a phone app is misbehaving. For me that is the smartest kind of backup for an app-only service like Chai. You are not stacking one app on top of the same weak link.

I'd also start free wherever the backup allows it. You only need a few messages to see whether it suits you, and there is no point paying for a second subscription on a night when you are already paying for Chai.

Candy AI as a stand-in while Chai is down

My first pick for an evening without Chai is Candy AI, and the main reason is simple: it runs on the web. When a phone app is the thing that broke, a browser tab is the cleanest escape. Candy AI is made by EverAI Limited in Malta, it lists memory and voice calls as features, and you can create your own companion, which covers most of what Chai regulars miss.

The catch is the free start, and I won't dress it up. The free allowance is tiny: 5 messages, full stop, since nothing resets daily, and a recent free-tier check put a free account at 3-5 messages and 3-5 images, no video. That is a taste, not an evening. Adult content is paid-only, so the free tier stays tame.

If you decide to pay, the plan choice is where I have a clear opinion. At €13.99, the 1-Month Plan costs roughly what Chai Premium does, so as a short stopgap it is fair. But the 12-Month Plan at €47.88, about €3.99 a month, is where I'd point you if you think you might stay, especially while the 70% off deal on that plan is listed. Just don't buy a year to cover one outage.

Billing is discreet enough: the charge shows as EverAI. Cancelling is in Settings, under Unsubscribe in your account. The refund window is the thing to know before paying. Outside the EU and UK, the terms give you 24 hours after payment to ask for a refund, and nothing after that. I'd call that strict, so decide inside that first day.

Other reviewers report that details can start slipping after roughly 10-20 messages, and that visible errors show up in about 1 of every 8 generated images, with no free retry. Neither is a deal-breaker for a stand-in, but I'd keep expectations sensible.

If Chai is not the only app giving you trouble tonight, it is worth checking whether Character AI is down as well, before you blame your connection.

Three web apps to keep open while Chai is down

The next three apps I would open, and the reason.

My short version before you go

If Chai will not load, look at the status box first, then your own connection, then the app version. If the chip says Down, waiting beats reinstalling, and a lapsed store subscription is worth ruling out before anything else.

For money, my view is steady: if you like Chai, Premium annual at $134.99 is the calm choice, and I would pass on the weekly Ultra plan. It is charged every single week through the App Store, and what it adds on top of Premium comes only from unofficial sources. Nothing on file promises credit for downtime, so don't pay for more than you plan to use.

Keep one web-based backup bookmarked, and start it free where you can. If another app you use is acting up too, a quick look at whether Janitor AI is down or PolyBuzz is having trouble will tell you if the problem is wider than Chai. Most outages pass. Your stories and your characters will usually still be there when it does.

Chai AI down: questions people ask

Is Chai AI down right now?

The status box at the top of this page shows the latest reading: Up, Slow, Down or Unknown, with the time of the check in UTC. It looks at Chai's official website, so it is a strong clue rather than a guarantee for the app itself. If the chip says Up and your app still fails, the cause is more likely your connection, an old app version or the free allowance.

Why does Chai stop replying on the free plan?

Chai is free to download, but no fixed free daily message limit is officially published, and secondary sources describe the limit as fluctuating. So a chat that stops mid-evening may simply have hit the free allowance rather than an outage. My advice: if the status box shows Up, treat a sudden stop as a limit first and a fault second.

Can I use Chai in a browser while the app is down?

The records list Chai on iOS and Android only, with no web version. That means there is no browser tab to fall back on. If you want a backup that works in a browser, pick an app that runs on the web, such as Candy AI, OurDream AI or Nomi AI, all of which list web access.

Do I get money back if Chai is down while I am subscribed?

Nothing on file promises credit for downtime. Chai's paid plans are App Store in-app purchases, and the refund wording on file is the standard App Store EULA warranty clause rather than a Chai-specific policy. If a billing problem comes up during an outage, the store you paid through is the place to raise it.

Which Chai plan is the smartest buy if outages worry me?

I'd avoid the weekly Ultra plan at $19.99, which works out to $86.62 a month and makes every bit of downtime feel costly. Premium annual at $134.99, or $11.25 a month, spreads the risk over a whole year. If you are unsure about Chai, a single month of Premium at $13.99 is the lowest commitment.

Is it an outage or is Chai just forgetting things?

Often it is memory. Reports say Chai can lose track of established details three to five messages in. A character that suddenly seems to lose track of your story is most likely hitting that limit, and a short reminder message usually helps more than restarting the app.
