Checked twice a day, every 12 hours. About this check
Is Character AI down right now, or is it just you?
The status box above answers the first half of that question. It shows one of four states, Up, Slow, Down or Unknown, with the time of the last check in UTC. My advice is to read the time before the colour.
The check runs only twice a day, so a green chip from hours ago says less than you'd hope, and a red one may already be old news.
Here is how I'd read each state:
- Up: the official site answered normally at the last check. If Character AI is not working for you anyway, look closer to home first: the connection, the browser you use or which app version you have.
- Slow: the site answered, but late. On the free plan, remember that Character AI uses slow mode at high load, which reduces response speed.
- Down: the site returned a server error, timed out or refused the connection. Waiting is usually the only fix, so this is the moment for a backup plan.
- Unknown: the site blocked or limited the automated request. That is a bot wall, not proof of an outage, so don't read it as down.
The difference between Up and Slow matters more on Character AI than on most apps, because slow mode is part of how the free tier is designed. The c.ai+ FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for all users, and the price of that promise is a queue when the Character AI servers are under high load. c.ai+ lists no slow mode among its benefits, so paying subscribers skip that queue.
I like that Character AI states this openly in its own plan descriptions. What I don't like is how easy it is for a free user to mistake a busy evening for a broken app. If replies crawl but still arrive, I'd give it time before reinstalling anything.
A Character AI slow state is annoying, but it's also the most harmless reading the box can give you. It means the service is there and answering, just not at full speed.
If the box shows Up and your chat still won't move, the quick checks further down are worth a couple of minutes. If you want the full picture of what the app offers when it works, my Character AI review with every plan and limit goes from the free tier to c.ai+. For the Character AI server status in the official sense, the company's own channels are the final word, and I'd trust them over rumours on social media.
Why a Character AI outage costs more than an evening
An outage sounds small: an app doesn't load, you try again tomorrow. With a character app it lands differently. The whole point is a conversation that continues, with a character who picks up where you left off. A break in the middle of a long story is annoying in a way a broken weather app never is. It's the lost momentum, more than the lost minutes, that stings.
It also hits the free plan and the paid plans differently, and that's worth knowing before you spend money. Free users share capacity: the free tier shows ads and runs on slow mode at high load. For $9.99 a month, c.ai+ drops the ads and slow mode and gives the highest daily limits.
The cheaper c.ai lite, $4.99 monthly, cuts ads down and adds some premium chat-style messages each day. I'd treat a paid plan as a faster lane on busy nights, not as insurance against an outage.
My take on money during an outage is simple. Don't upgrade in the middle of one hoping it will fix things. If the site itself is down, a subscription can't reach you either, and you won't get the money back unless a law says so. Bought through the App Store or Google Play?
Then Apple or Google, not Character AI, decides on refunds. The billing note above has the exact rule.
There's one more wrinkle. Other reviewers report one user whose credit and debit cards kept failing at the c.ai+ checkout for three weeks straight, though both cards worked fine on ten competitor sites; support's only advice was to try another card. If that still happens, a failed payment on a bad evening could be either problem. I'd wait until the app is stable before trying to pay at all.
Long chats have their own fragility. Other reviewers report long conversations getting muddled: the AI dropped a promise only ten messages after making it, Auto Memories feature notwithstanding. After an outage, a short recap of where the story stood is a kind thing to do for yourself. c.ai+ lists 30 memory pins, and pinning the key facts of a story is cheap insurance.
If outages keep costing you evenings, it may be time to have a second app ready. My list of Character AI alternatives worth keeping as a backup sorts them by what they do best. Pick one with a real free start now, while you're calm, rather than at midnight while you're annoyed.
How this check works
Up top, the status box comes from an automated check, not user reports. Twice a day, every 12 hours, our own server sends one request to Character AI's official site and records whether it answered, the HTTP code and the response time. Slower than 3 seconds is Slow.
No answer within 10 seconds, a server error or a failed connection is Down. A blocked or rate-limited request (HTTP 401, 403 or 429) shows Unknown and never counts as an outage.
The box also reads Character AI's official status page on Statuspage and shows what it reports. Below that come uptime for 7 and 30 days and a 30-day bar, one cell per day. A result more than 14 hours old is marked Out of date.
It can't see your account, your chat or one broken feature, and two checks a day can miss a short outage in between. If the app fails right now, open the official status page too. If you see an error the box doesn't explain, note the exact wording and the time for support. My status hub for other chat apps uses the same method for each app.
Why won't Character AI load for you?
If the box says Up and you still wonder why Character AI is not loading, the cause is usually closer to home. Work through these in order, because each one is quick:
- Your connection: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or open any other site to see whether the problem is broader.
- The other platform: Character AI has a website as well as iOS and Android apps. If the website fails, try the phone app, and the other way round.
- A fresh start: close the browser tab or the app completely and reopen it. On the web, a private window rules out a stale session.
- The app version: on a phone, look in the App Store or Google Play for an update, since an old version can misbehave after changes on the service side.
If only one feature is broken, say Character AI search is not working while chats open fine, that points to a partial problem rather than a full outage. My advice then is to keep chatting and come back to search later.
Still stuck after all four? Then the question becomes why isn't Character AI working when the check says Up. Most likely the problem sits somewhere between your device and the service, or it's a short blip the next check will catch. Give it a little time before you reinstall, since a reinstall usually means logging in again.
Why is Character AI so slow some nights?
The most common reason is built into the free tier. Character AI's free plan runs on slow mode at high load, which reduces response speed when many people are chatting at once. So when Character AI is slow in the evening but still answers, you're most likely waiting in a queue rather than facing an outage.
Here's my honest view of slow mode. It's a fair trade for free and unlimited messaging, and I'd rather have a queue than a hard daily cap. But if slowness is your main complaint and you chat every day, c.ai+ is the plan that removes it, for $9.99 monthly or $94.99 yearly.
Paid yearly, that's $7.92 a month, and the pricing page shows it as a 21% saving. I'd only pay once you're sure slowness, not an outage, is the real problem.
Between the two sits c.ai lite, $4.99 monthly. It brings fewer ads, 30 memory pins and a few premium chat-style messages per day, but its list doesn't mention slow mode at all. If speed is the reason you'd pay, I'd go straight to c.ai+.
What to use while Character AI is down
If it's truly down, the kindest thing you can do for your evening is switch apps rather than keep refreshing. The three backups below all have some free start, and they differ a lot.
Nomi AI gives the most room: a permanent free plan with 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, on web, iOS and Android. That's the one I'd send a friend who just wants to keep talking. Candy AI's free start is 5 messages in total, so treat it as a look, not a stand-in.
OurDream AI gives 55 Dreamcoins to start, at 1 Dreamcoin per message, which is a sample rather than an evening.
One thing to know before you switch: Character AI doesn't allow adult content, while Candy AI, OurDream AI and Nomi AI do, Candy AI on paid plans only. If you'd like to keep the same tone, choose with that in mind. My page on how I check the apps explains what these backups were judged on.

Candy AI as a backup: what you really get
Candy AI is the offer above, and I want to be straight about it. It's a different kind of app from Character AI. Where Character AI is a hub of many characters with free unlimited messaging, Candy AI is built around a companion you create yourself, with voice calls, memory and paid image and video generation. It runs on the web only, so there's no phone app to fall back on.
The free start is the catch. Candy AI hands out just 5 messages, and they don't come back the next day. That's enough to see whether you like the style, and not enough to carry you through an evening without Character AI. I'd call it a preview.
If you like what you see, the 1-Month Plan is €13.99, with 100 tokens monthly and no limit on text messages. The 12-Month Plan works out to €3.99 a month, but it's billed €47.88 upfront, which I'd never commit to on a frustrated evening.
The money rules are worth reading here. Subscriptions renew automatically, and you cancel under Settings, then Unsubscribe, in your account. Outside the EU and UK there are 24 hours after payment to ask for a refund, which is tight. Your statement will list the charge as EverAI. I find that fairly discreet, since it doesn't spell out the app's name.
Other reviewers report that replies are much slower on Free, 15 to 30 seconds, than on paid plans, 3 to 5 seconds. If that's right, Candy AI's free tier won't feel faster than a slow Character AI evening, so I wouldn't switch for speed alone. Adult content is paid-only on Candy AI, so the free messages stay tame.
If you'd rather move to another character hub for the night, check that it's up before you go. My page on whether Janitor AI is down works the same way as this one.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: €3.99 monthly (12-Month Plan)
- Allowed: mature chat, paid plans
- Runs on: web

Before you close this tab
A short plan from me, so the next outage costs you less. Bookmark this page and read the time of the last check before anything else. If it says Up, run the quick checks: your connection, the other platform, a fresh start and an app update.
If it says Slow on a busy evening, that's likely slow mode on the free tier, and waiting beats reinstalling.
Keep your money calm too. Don't upgrade to c.ai+ in the middle of an outage, since the money stays spent unless a law says otherwise. If slowness bothers you every day, the $9.99 monthly c.ai+ is the fix, bought on a quiet day with a clear head.
And pick one backup now. Nomi AI's 50 free messages a day make it my first suggestion for a friend who just wants to keep talking, and it runs on the same three platforms as Character AI. If you already pay, note your renewal day somewhere you'll see it, so an outage week never surprises you at checkout. Whatever you choose, you'll be glad it's ready.
Character AI outage questions, answered
Why is Character AI down right now?
This page can't tell you the cause of an outage, only whether the official site answers. The box at the top shows the latest state and the time of the check in UTC. If it says Down, the site returned a server error, timed out or refused the connection, and waiting is the fix.
If it says Up, the problem is more likely on your side, so run the quick checks above.
Why is Character AI slow on the free plan?
The free plan uses slow mode at high load, which reduces response speed when many people chat at once. It's the trade-off for free and unlimited messaging. Paying $9.99 a month for c.ai+ ends both slow mode and ads. I'd only pay if slowness bothers you every day, and I'd buy it on a calm day, not during an outage.
Is Character AI shutting down?
An outage is not a shutdown. Character Technologies, Inc. still sells c.ai+ for $9.99 monthly and $94.99 yearly, and its c.ai+ FAQ says the company is proud to keep unlimited messaging free for everyone. If the app is unreachable for a while, look at the status box above and the company's own channels before believing a rumour.
Is there Character AI maintenance today?
Maintenance would show up as the site not answering or answering late, and the status box above reports that as Down or Slow at the last check. Our own check can't tell maintenance from an unplanned problem, but the box also shows what Character AI's official status page reports, so look there and at the company's announcements for the reason. The fix on your side is the same either way: wait, and keep a backup ready.
Can I get a refund if Character AI was down?
Only where the law requires one. If you paid in the App Store or on Google Play, any refund comes from Apple or Google, not Character AI. To manage or cancel c.ai+ on the web, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage to reach the Customer Portal. My advice: don't upgrade during an outage in the hope that it helps.
Why is Character AI not working right now when the site is up?
When the status box shows Up, the service answered, and the problem is usually local. Check your connection, try the other platform (web, iOS or Android), fully close and reopen the app or tab, and update the app from the App Store or Google Play. If only search or one feature fails, it's more likely a partial problem than a full outage.
