AI chat roleplay: 12 apps ranked for scenes and group chat

What sets them apart is the free start. SpicyChat's free plan is unlimited text chat on its Default model. CrushOn AI gives 100 message credits a month. OurDream AI starts you with 55 Dreamcoins at 1 Dreamcoin per message, so that one runs out fast.

Third, a character library plus the option to build your own, since that is how you get a cast that fits you, whoever you are and whoever you like.

Then I weighed the practical facts from each app's official pages: the free start, the cheapest plan worth paying for, the content level and the refund rule. Adult content allowed as a policy counts for more here than a filter, but it is not the whole ranking. Character AI, for example, has free unlimited messaging and group chat, yet it does not allow adult content at all, which keeps it lower down.

All twelve apps list roleplay as a category, so the order comes down to the details. Each app here is one I know from my own use, but the order rests on official pages plus what other reviewers publish. The page on how I check the apps explains where each fact comes from.

Every entry covers what the app is, why it fits roleplay, the free start, the plan I'd pay for first, the catch and who should skip it. The other five apps, Character AI, Chub AI, Perchance, HammerAI and Privee AI, appear in the tables and the FAQ. Group chat and custom characters are both there, so you can build your own cast from day one.

Free has honest limits: ads, possible waiting lines, 4K memory and replies up to 180 tokens, with no images or voice. For text scenes, I still call that a real free plan, not a trial. Other reviewers report that the roleplay is well-paced and character-driven.

The first plan I'd buy is Get a Taste, priced at $5.95 a month, which drops the ads and the waiting lines, adds a memory manager that stores key details, and allows up to 10 personas, which is handy if you like playing different characters yourself. True Supporter at $19.95 is the jump for long campaigns, with 8K context and semantic memory 2.0.

The catch: images need a paid plan, and one review says the same character looks different in every picture. Fees are non-refundable once the account has been used. I do like that subscribers are told in advance if the price rises.

Group scenes are covered on paid plans: up to 10 active Nomis and 10 active group chats, with extra rooms at 25 credits each. The official pages don't say whether free accounts get group chat.

The free plan still lets you build a Nomi and play one-on-one: 50 messages a day, capped at 400 characters each, with no ads. Adult text is allowed under its policy, but explicit pictures are banned on every tier, so this is a writer's app more than a visual one.

The plan I'd pick is Standard: $15.99 a month, or $99.99 for the year ($8.33 a month), with unlimited messages of up to 800 characters. The catch: payments are nonrefundable, and one reviewer found the chat can turn samey and agree with you too readily.

Where it earns a spot is the look of a story. The builder lets you pick a character's looks, personality, voice and hobbies, and paid plans add 18+ images, video and voice calls. Reviewers call the pictures lifelike and say a character keeps the same face between generations, which matters when a scene should stay consistent on screen.

The free start is barely a scene: the Terms cap free users at 5 messages. Adult content sits behind a paid plan, starting with the 1-Month Plan at €13.99, which includes unlimited text and 100 tokens a month. The 12-Month Plan comes to €3.99 a month.

The catch for long campaigns is memory. Reviewers report that characters stay consistent for about 10-20 messages before longer chats lose details. Refund requests outside the EU and UK close after 24 hours, and spending more than 20 tokens ends subscription refund eligibility.

Other reviewers report that it sticks to the scene you describe and keeps a character's face steady from picture to picture better than rivals do, which is exactly what a roleplayer wants from images.

The free start is where I'd be careful. You can sign up and look around for nothing, and the free plan lists 55 Dreamcoins to start, with chat at 1 Dreamcoin per message. That is a taste of one scene, not a free home. Adult content is allowed as a policy.

The plan I'd pay for is Standard Monthly at $19.99: unlimited messages with any character, image and video generation and 1,000 dreamcoins a month. Standard Annual comes to $9.99 a month; even so, I'd only commit once a month has convinced you. I like the 14-day Quality Guarantee, even if it is case by case.

The catch is coins. Video and voice calls draw on dreamcoins, and one reviewer says calls drain them fast. If you roleplay by voice, budget above the plan price.

Skip it if you want weeks of free scenes first. To weigh it against another paid app, my Candy AI review is a good place to start.

A free-tier check dated 2026-09-22 shows 100 message credits a month, topped up with coins you earn from daily tasks. Free accounts also includes unlimited Free models, AI voice replies and 8K memory, but no group chat. So you can try your own character one to one before you pay for a cast.

The plan I'd pick is Standard at $5.99 a month: 2,000 message credits, 16K memory models and group chat. Standard yearly is $58.88, which is $4.91 a month, but I'd stay monthly because there are no refunds of usage fees and no partial refunds for unused time.

The catch is reliability. Some reviews describe many of the listed chat models as buggy or outdated, so expect some trial and error. Reviewers also mention content filters triggering on innocent roleplay, which is an odd problem for an app that allows adult content. And there are no images or video at all.

Skip it if you want pictures with your scenes. If you are after one steady partner rather than a cast, my list of the best AI girlfriend apps is the better fit.

The free start is the weak spot for me. Free accounts exist, but the official FAQ says the ability to offer them is limited, and the exact free limits are not published on a reachable official page. I don't like guessing, so see the free account as a quick peek, nothing more.

Paid pricing is in euros. Deluxe at €49.90 a month gives you the 70B model with no chat cap, plus unlimited images and voice, while video costs Souls per use. Just Chatting at €11.99 and Premium at €24.99 are prices reported by third-party reviews and not confirmed on the official pricing page, so check the official prices yourself first.

The catch for long campaigns is memory. According to outside reviews, a scene stays intact inside one session, yet the thread gets lost across weeks. Lots of images also burn through credits quicker than the sticker price hints. For €49.90, I'd want both fixed.

Its content level is different from the six above. The policy is a soft one, not full adult content, so expect a more restrained app. For some of you that is a plus: a cast of characters with no surprises when you open it in public. For others it rules the app out, and that is fine.

The free start runs on Mochi, the app's currency. Sign up and 100 Mochi land in your account; after that, 50 free Mochi can be claimed each day, and every batch expires 24 hours after you claim it. What you earn through milestones tops out at 1,000 Mochi per 30 days.

I like a daily allowance for roleplay, because you can come back to a scene every evening, but it is claim it or lose it.

Paid plans run from Plus at $9.99 to Platinum at $39.99. The one I'd look at is Pro at $14.99, since it adds unlimited chat on basic models, which is what a roleplayer burns through. What bothers me: the monthly Mochi amounts are disputed between sources, for example 1,250 vs 2,000 on Pro, so you can't be sure what you are buying on the currency side.

The catch is credits. Reviewers say Mochi runs out fast once you generate images, rerolls and video, memory is fine but slips in long roleplay, and the platform can feel busy to newcomers. Refunds depend on the refund policy and on whether the Mochi or benefits were already used.

OurDream AI's paid plans begin at $19.99 a month, Soulkyn's confirmed plan is €49.90, and both only make sense if images or video are part of your scenes.

Watch the currencies too: Dreamcoins, Mochi and credits all sit on top of the monthly price. If you are leaving Character AI because of its content rules, my list of Character AI alternatives is built for that move.

OurDream AI, SpicyChat, CrushOn AI and Soulkyn all allow adult content as a policy. Chub AI, HammerAI and Privee AI allow it too. Moescape AI is softer, and Character AI does not allow it at all. Perchance has no content policy on record, so I won't guess.

Now what the money buys. SpicyChat lets you roleplay free with unlimited text, and you pay only when you want images, from True Supporter at $19.95. CrushOn AI never makes images, so $5.99 on Standard covers the whole text experience, group chat included. OurDream AI's Standard Monthly at $19.99 bundles image and video generation with 1,000 dreamcoins. Soulkyn's Deluxe at €49.90 covers unlimited images and voice, with video extra.

My take: for text-only adult roleplay, the smart money is $0 on SpicyChat or $5.99 on CrushOn AI. For image-led scenes, expect $19.99 or more, plus coins. My CrushOn AI review goes deeper on its credits and cancel path.

One more thing I'd look at before any payment: the refund rule. SpicyChat's fees are non-refundable once the account has been used, CrushOn AI issues no refunds of usage fees, and HammerAI says all purchases are final. OurDream AI's case-by-case 14-day Quality Guarantee is the kindest of the lot.

My advice: start on SpicyChat free and write a few scenes. If you find yourself wishing you could see your characters, move to OurDream AI. If words are enough, stay. For more apps that let you start without paying, see my free AI chat list.

Here is what I'd look at before the first scene:

• Billing name. On a card statement, SpicyChat appears as NDAI.CHAT, CrushOn AI as CRUSHON SUB and OurDream AI as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL. Only the last one carries the app's name.
• Account or no account. Perchance's official page title says no sign-up, so it asks the least of you.
• Cancel path. OurDream AI: open your profile page and click "Cancel subscription". SpicyChat: Profile, then Manage Subscription.
• What you type. Leave out your full name, your workplace and anything you would hate to see stored.

My view: treat every roleplay app as if a person might one day read your chats. That is not paranoia, just a sensible default in a new industry. If discreet billing matters to you, the two with neutral billing names are the easier pick.

And if you'd prefer to share no card and no email at all, a no-account start on Perchance is the most private way to try roleplay, in my view.
