AI character art apps to build and picture your own cast

My short answer for character art fans
If you want to create a character and then see them, you need two things in one app: a character builder and an image generator. All thirteen here have both. My top pick is SpicyChat, where you design a character and picture it in chat with custom prompts once you're on True Supporter.
Nomi AI comes next with 2 free images a day of the companion you create, and Candy AI third for lifelike images and video. Joi AI is a strong pick for creating a character free and about 50 image generations a month on Premium, Soulkyn for unlimited images on its Deluxe plan, and Moescape AI for a daily free Mochi allowance on web and mobile.
What none of these is, in my facts, is a pro tool for AI character concept art. They're chat apps with image generators attached, built to picture the character you're talking to. That's great for fun, less so for a portfolio. If a relaxed content policy for images matters more to you, my uncensored AI rankings start from that.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
How I ranked these art apps
The order weighs two facts first, both from official pages: can you make your own characters, and can the app generate images of them? After that, video counts as a bonus, then a character library and roleplay, because art means more when the character also talks back.
Then comes the part that decides your real cost: credits. Almost every app here prices images in a currency of its own, whether Neurons, Mochi, diamonds, chips, Rubies or credits. So I weighed the free start by what it lets you generate, and the first paid plan by how many images it buys, where the app says so. A published number beats a vague promise.
Content level comes next, from SFW only to adult image generation allowed, and then the fine print on refunds, renewals and cancelling. Gening AI sells one-time purchases with no auto-renewal, which I like for a burst of creating.
What I can't rank is image quality itself, since official pages don't prove it. Where other review sites describe it, I pass that on and say what I think. The full criteria sit on the page about the method behind these rankings.
18+ readers only. Here we look at AI companion apps that include NSFW features; there are no explicit images.
The top eight get full entries below: what each app is, why it suits character art, the free start, the plan I'd buy, the catch and who should skip it.
Talkie AI, Lovescape, Rubii, Gening AI and Yollo AI are in the tables. Rubii deserves a mention for the clearest image math: Plus at $7.99 gives 800 Rubies, which it says is about 400 images, plus 5 free images a day. Gening AI is worth a look if you like anime-style images, which reviews say look better there than realistic ones. For more drawn-style characters, my anime AI chat list goes further.
The first 3 spots are my top picks, and their scores include an author bonus you can see in each review.
SpicyChat: design a character, then picture it in chat
SpicyChat 8.4/10
Custom-prompt images inside chat
- Freemium
- NSFW on all plans
- Remembers past chats
starts at $5/mo
SpicyChat, run by NextDay AI Incorporated in Montreal, is a browser-based roleplay and companion app with its own in-chat image generator. For character art, that pairing is the appeal: you design a character from nothing, choosing the look, personality and backstory, then picture them inside the conversation. The generator's landing page lists anime or semi-realistic styles, LoRA scaling, an SFW/NSFW filter and custom prompts, which is more control than a gallery picker gives you. Adult content is allowed.
Be clear on the free side, though. Building characters and chatting on the Default model costs nothing and has no message cap, but the free plan includes no images at all. Pictures start at True Supporter, $19.95 a month, which lists unlimited images inside chats plus 8K context.
Other reviewers say that tier covers only certain supported characters, while Im All In at $29.95 works with every character.
The catch for an art list is consistency. In one review, a realistic character looked different in each image, and switching image NSFW mode on reportedly gave warped, poor-quality anime-style output. So I'd treat it as a way to illustrate scenes, not to keep one fixed face across a series.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants free pictures. My SpicyChat review breaks down what each tier adds.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: $5.00 monthly (Get a Taste)
- Allowed: mature chat permitted
- Runs on: web
Nomi AI: two free images a day of the Nomi you create
Nomi AI 8.3/10
Free daily images of your companion
- Freemium: 50 msgs daily
- NSFW on all plans
- Remembers past chats
starts at $8.33/mo
Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Baltimore company, makes Nomi AI for the web, iOS and Android. It's a companion app first, and I'd rather say that plainly on an art list: its images exist to show you the Nomi you're talking to, not to fill a portfolio. Creating a Nomi costs nothing, and the free plan includes 2 images a day, a modest allowance that refills every day.
Subscribers get 40 image credits daily, and extra selfies, art requests or image edits cost 1 credit each. An image-to-video tool turns an existing selfie or art picture into a clip of about 5 seconds, at 6 credits for standard definition or 10 for HD. Credits can only be bought while a subscription is running. The Standard plan is $15.99 monthly, or $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month.
The limits are real for artists. Other reviewers report that pictures come from a ready-made gallery with no free prompting, and that turning an image into video takes about 2 minutes and looks poor. Pictures also stay clothed on every tier: the official comparison lists Nomi as text plus clothed photos.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants full control over prompts. My Nomi AI review covers the memory side, which is where it really shines.
- Starting free: Free tier, 50 free messages daily
- Lowest price: $8.33 monthly (Standard Plan Yearly)
- Allowed: mature chat permitted
- Runs on: web, ios, android
Candy AI: lifelike images and video of a companion you build
Candy AI 8.2/10
Lifelike images & video
- Freemium
- NSFW with a paid plan
- Remembers past chats
starts at €3.99/mo
Candy AI, from EverAI Limited in Malta, is a web companion app with one of the most detailed builders on this page: you pick ethnicity, looks, personality, voice and hobbies. For character art it stands out on the pictures. Other reviewers describe its images and clips as very lifelike and say a character keeps the same look from one generation to the next, which is exactly where most apps here struggle.
The free side is only a peek. A free-tier check on 2026-09-22 found 3-5 messages and 3-5 images for good, no video and no daily reset. Image and video generation, adult images included, are paid benefits.
The 1-Month Plan costs €13.99 with 100 tokens a month, and the 12-Month Plan works out to €3.99 a month, billed €47.88 upfront. Tokens are the real art budget: reportedly 2 tokens for a v1 image or 4 for v2, and video from 12 tokens for about 5 seconds up to about 80 for 55 seconds. Roughly 1 image in 8 reportedly has obvious flaws, and redoing it costs again.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants a whole cast in one scene, since no group chat is on record. My Candy AI review goes deeper into the token math.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: €3.99 monthly (12-Month Plan)
- Allowed: mature chat, paid plans
- Runs on: web
Joi AI: create a character and picture it, free to start
Joi AI 5.8/10
Creating a character and its images
- Freemium
- NSFW on all plans
- Remembers past chats
starts at $13.99/mo
Joi AI, from Novi Limited, is a web app where companion chat and roleplay sit next to a built-in image generator. That combination is why it earns a place on my art list: you can create a character, then generate images and video of them, all in one place. Free character creation is there to start, which I like, because you can shape the look and personality before paying anything. Adult content is allowed.
The free art budget is small but real: 6 lifetime image generations, stored for 7 days, and a free video-generation option is advertised. Save the ones you like, because they won't stay. The free account shows 10 Neurons.
The plan I'd pay for is Premium at $13.99 a month, which covers one free custom-character creation, about 50 free image generations a month and about 5 free video generations, along with better chat models and improved memory. For a hobby artist, 50 images a month is a fair base.
The catch is consistency. Reviews call the generator capable, though faces and eyes can wander away from the character's look from one image to the next, and Neurons are gone even when a render fails. If you need the same face in every image, budget for re-rolls. Subscriptions are also generally non-refundable once activated.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants unlimited images on one plan. If you're weighing another companion app before you pick, my Candy AI review is a useful comparison.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: $13.99 monthly (Premium - Monthly)
- Allowed: mature chat permitted
- Runs on: web
Soulkyn: unlimited images on its premium plan
Soulkyn 6.8/10
Unlimited images on one plan
- Freemium
- NSFW on all plans
- Remembers past chats
starts at €11.99/mo
Soulkyn, from Cube Digital Media Ltd., is listed as both an image generator and a video generator, on top of a character hub, companion chat and roleplay. For character art, the draw is its Deluxe plan: unlimited images next to unlimited chat on the 70B model and voice. You can make your own characters and put them in group chats, so a whole cast can share a scene. Its policy also leaves room for adult art and chat.
The free start is the weak spot for artists. Its official FAQ admits free accounts can only be offered in a limited way, and no exact number is published, so the free image count is a blank for now. Just Chatting at €11.99 and Premium at €24.99 are reported by third-party reviews but not confirmed officially, so if art is the goal, I'd plan around Deluxe.
Here's what bothers me. Other reviewers report that lots of images burn through credits quicker than the plan price lets on, which sits oddly next to "unlimited images". Video is pay-per-use in Souls, even on Deluxe, and is described as an occasional paid extra. The images themselves were called fun.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants to try the image generator for free before paying. For more apps with an open content level, my NSFW AI chat rankings compare policies.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: €11.99 monthly (Just Chatting)
- Allowed: mature chat permitted

Moescape AI: daily free Mochi for images on any device
Moescape AI 6.2/10
Daily free Mochi for images
- Freemium
- Remembers past chats
starts at $9.99/mo
Moescape AI is a character hub with roleplay and image generation from MOESCAPE TECHNOLOGY CORP., on web, iOS and Android. It suits art because it pairs custom characters with images, video and group chat, and because it hands out free currency every day. Its content policy is soft, so think flirty rather than fully open.
The free start suits a sketchbook habit. New users get 100 Mochi, then 50 daily free Mochi, which expire 24 hours after you claim them. Milestone earnings add more, capped at 1,000 Mochi per 30 days. I like a daily drip for art, because it rewards coming back rather than one big splurge.
For paying, I'd look at Pro at $14.99 a month, with unlimited chat on basic models plus monthly Mochi, which should leave more Mochi for images. The exact monthly Mochi on each plan is disputed between sources, and I don't love that when Mochi is what you're buying. Platinum at $39.99 lists 6,250 Mochi from a single source.
The catch is burn rate. Other reviewers report that credits run out fast when generating images, rerolls and video. The platform also feels busy to new users. Refund eligibility may depend on whether Mochi or subscription benefits were already used.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants an open content level for images. If you'd rather have a companion than a studio, my AI girlfriend rankings start there.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: $9.99 monthly (Plus)
- Allowed: unconfirmed
- Runs on: web, ios, android
Uncensy: a character marketplace with strong visuals
Uncensy 6.4/10
Image and video quality
- Freemium: 40 msgs daily
- NSFW with a paid plan
- Remembers past chats
starts at $7.99/mo
Uncensy, from AVERIQ LTD, is one of the most art-heavy apps on this list. It's listed as an image generator, a video generator, a character hub and a character marketplace, on top of companion chat and roleplay. Reviews back that up, describing image quality as very high and videos as close to real footage. For AI character art you'll actually want to look at, that's a strong sign.
The free tier gives 40 messages a day, 1 companion slot and a one-time welcome gift of 40 diamonds, with no credit card required. On Free, images, voice and video are paid with diamonds at higher rates than on Blaze, so 40 diamonds is a sample, not a gallery.
The plan I'd buy is Spark at $7.99 a month: unlimited chat, 5 companion slots and 50 diamonds a month, with images, video, voice and NSFW included. If you generate a lot, Blaze at $14.99 gives 150 diamonds a month and the lowest diamond rates. Neither plan publishes a price per image, so how many pictures the diamonds buy is anyone's guess.
The catches: adult content is paid only, fees don't come back unless a law requires it, and unused credits may be forfeited when an account ends. In the January 2026 version, one reviewer had to build a companion first before the app let them talk to the characters already there.
Who should skip it: anyone who needs to know the exact image cost upfront. My overall rankings show where Uncensy stands in other categories.
- Starting free: Free tier, 40 free messages daily
- Lowest price: $7.99 monthly (Spark)
- Allowed: mature chat, paid plans
- Runs on: web
Character AI: images on a free, SFW character hub
Character AI 6.6/10
Free SFW characters with images
- Freemium
starts at $4.99/mo
Character AI, from Character Technologies, Inc., runs a big character hub on web, iOS and Android, built around companion chat and roleplay. It lists image generation, with video as a paid extra, and you can create your own characters and chat with them in groups. It makes an art list because images are part of the package, though not its focus, and the free start is hard to argue with.
Messaging costs nothing and has no cap for anyone, according to the c.ai+ FAQ. The free plan runs on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with full ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. For someone who mostly wants to create characters and talk to them, with an image now and then, that's a generous base.
Paying is cheap, too. (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month and brings fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. c.ai+ runs $9.99 monthly, or $94.99 yearly, roughly $7.92 a month; the pricing page shows it against $119.88 with "save 21%". It removes ads and slow mode and brings the highest daily limits. My advice: stay free until slow mode bothers you, then take the annual c.ai+.
Now the catches. Character AI does not allow adult content, so any art stays SFW. That's a plus for a clean creative space. The facts I have don't list image limits per plan, so the picture count per plan stays unknown.
Reviews also mention the AI inventing plausible extra details with confidence, and long chats getting messy despite an Auto Memories feature.
Billing has two points I'd flag. Money paid isn't refunded unless the law says otherwise, and App Store or Google Play buyers go to Apple or Google for any refund. Also, one reviewer saw a credit card and then a debit card turned down again and again at the c.ai+ checkout, over a stretch of three weeks. Web subscribers cancel through Settings > Account > Manage, which leads to the Customer Portal.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants adult image generation or a studio-grade image tool. If you want free text chat with a relaxed policy instead, my SpicyChat review is the better next read.
- Starting free: Free tier
- Lowest price: $4.99 monthly ((c.ai) lite)
- Allowed: unconfirmed
- Runs on: web, ios, android
What character art costs in credits
The table below lists every plan, but for art the currency matters more than the price. Joi AI's Premium includes about 50 image generations a month, Rubii's Plus at $7.99 says 800 Rubies buy about 400 images, and Lovescape's Premium at $19.99 comes with 600 chips a month. Soulkyn's Deluxe lists unlimited images outright.
Gening AI skips subscriptions entirely: its 12 Months plan is a one-time $47.88 for 24,000 credits, and Yollo AI's upgrade panel describes one-time passes too. I like that for a burst of creating, since nothing renews behind your back. Just note when the credits expire.

Adult image generation: which apps allow it
For character art, the content policy matters twice: once for chat, once for images. Joi AI, Soulkyn, Lovescape and Gening AI allow adult content under their policies. SpicyChat allows it too, with pictures from True Supporter, while Nomi AI allows adult chat but keeps pictures clothed.
Candy AI and Uncensy allow it on paid plans only; on Uncensy, Spark at $7.99 is the first plan to list NSFW alongside images and video. Moescape AI and Yollo AI have soft policies, and Character AI, Talkie AI and Rubii don't allow adult content.
A policy isn't the whole story for images. On Gening AI, reviews say moderation stops NSFW image prompts more often than it stops text, so an allowed policy doesn't mean every image goes through. On Lovescape, reviewers treat the free account as little more than a sample, since pictures and clips cost more chips than a new account holds. On Joi AI, a failed image attempt still spends Neurons.
My take: if adult image generation is the point, Uncensy's Spark is one of the cheapest monthly plans that lists it, and Soulkyn's Deluxe is the one that promises unlimited images. Joi AI sits between them at $13.99 with about 50 images a month. If you want SFW art only, Rubii's image math is the clearest here, and Character AI's free plan is the easiest place to start creating characters.
If you mostly want text chat and no images, CrushOn AI is worth comparing, and my CrushOn AI review covers its plans.

Joi AI or Soulkyn: which to pick for art
Joi AI is where I'd start if you just want a low-risk first look. Free character creation and 6 lifetime images let you see your character before paying, and Premium at $13.99 gives about 50 images a month. The trade-off is drifting faces, and a failed image still costs Neurons.
Soulkyn is the pick if you already know you'll generate a lot. Deluxe lists unlimited images, plus voice and group chat, but the free start is vague and video costs extra in Souls.
If you'd rather not pay for either one yet, my guide to free AI chat apps lists the best no-cost ways in.
Which suits you: Joi AI or Soulkyn?
Go with Joi AI if
5.8/10, starts at $13.99/mo
- You want to create a character for free before paying
- You're happy with about 50 images a month on Premium
- You want images and video in one app
or
Go with Soulkyn if
6.8/10, starts at €11.99/mo
- You want unlimited images on one plan
- You want group chats with your own cast
- You're ready to pay for Deluxe without a clear free trial
Privacy: who sees your characters and images
Art feels less private than chat, but it isn't. Your prompts, your characters and your images all sit on someone's servers, and your card sits in their billing system. Here's what I'd weigh before paying:
- Who runs it: Joi AI names Novi Limited, and Rubii names YoMio Tech Limited and EIGENVECTOR LTD jointly. Yollo AI names no registered legal entity, and Gening AI names no company in my facts.
- Renewals: Gening AI sells one-time purchases with no auto-renewal. Yollo AI's upgrade panel says the same, though its Terms describe subscriptions, so read the checkout carefully.
- Refunds: Yollo AI takes requests within 7 days with usage limits, Rubii evaluates every request individually, and Joi AI subscriptions are generally non-refundable once activated.
- What you type: keep real names and identifying details out of prompts and chats, on any app.
The statement name I have for Joi AI is joi.com, which I'd call fairly discreet. For the others, my facts don't include a billing name, so look at the app's billing page before you pay if that matters to you.
The compact facts behind this list don't say how long images are kept, apart from Joi AI's note that free images are stored for 7 days. For a fuller example of how a privacy policy reads, my OurDream AI review walks through what one says about your chats.
My rule: create on the free start first, then pay once for a pass or a month, and set a reminder before anything renews.
Common questions
What is the best AI character art app?
My top pick is SpicyChat, where you design a character and generate images inside the chat with custom prompts, from True Supporter at $19.95 a month. Nomi AI follows with 2 free images a day of your companion, and Candy AI comes third for lifelike images and video. Joi AI is a strong pick for creating a character free, with about 50 images a month on Premium at $13.99.
Can I make AI character art for free?
Yes, in small amounts. Joi AI gives 6 lifetime image generations. Moescape AI gives 100 Mochi to new users and 50 a day. Rubii hands out 50 free Rubies on sign-up and 30 per daily login.
Lovescape starts you with 80 chips for images, and Yollo AI with 100 starter credits. Expect a sample, not a gallery.
Is any of these an AI tool for turning 2D character art into 3D?
Not in the facts I have, so none of them works as an AI image-to-3D character tool. All thirteen generate images of your characters, and most also make short video, but none lists 3D models or 3D conversion. These are chat apps with image generators built in, made to picture the character you talk to. For 3D work, you'd need a dedicated tool outside this list.
Which app makes the most consistent character images?
Consistency is the weak point across this list. Joi AI's faces and eyes are reported to drift off-model, and Lovescape's character likeness is described as inconsistent. Uncensy gets the strongest image praise, with quality described as very high. Gening AI's anime-style images are said to look better than its realistic ones.
Is there something like Viggle AI (animate a character from an image) here?
Viggle AI itself is not in my records, so I can't speak for it. What I can say is that several apps on this list generate short video of your character. Joi AI advertises a free video option and includes about 5 free video generations on Premium. Lovescape's video is described as short photo-to-animation that uses chips fast.
Yollo AI's five-second template clip held together without warping in one review. Soulkyn's video is pay-per-use in Souls.
Do these apps renew automatically?
Most do. Gening AI is the exception: all payments are one-time purchases with no auto-renewal. Yollo AI's upgrade panel and refund policy say the same, though its Terms describe subscriptions. Rubii, Talkie AI and Lovescape renew automatically until you cancel, and Moescape AI subscriptions are managed in account or app store settings.
Can I make an AI character from photo uploads?
Not that the records show. None of these thirteen lists uploading a photo to base a character on. You build characters with each app's own creation tools, then generate images of them. The same goes for an AI character-swap image: no swap feature is on record for any app here. My take: shape the character in the builder, and keep photos of real people out of it.
